#BookSale “The Librarian’s Vampire Assistant Box Set: Books 1-3” by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

book cover

~~~
From New York Times Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes a Horribly Sunny Mystery (with a sprinkle of Romance), The Librarian’s Vampire Assistant Box Set: Books 1-3.
BOOK 1: NOBODY MESSES WITH HIS LIBRARIAN. . .
Who killed Michael Vanderhorst’s maker? It’s a darn good question. But when the trail brings Michael to hellishly sunny Phoenix, Arizona, his biggest problem soon becomes a cute little librarian he can’t seem to stay away from. He’s never met a bigger danger magnet! Even her book cart has it out for her. And is that the drug cartel following her around, too? “Dear God, woman! What have you gotten yourself into?”
Things go from bad to worse when local vampires won’t play nice.
Can this four-hundred-year-old vampire keep his librarian safe and himself out of hot water? Can he bring his maker’s killer to justice? Yesterday, he would’ve said yes. But yesterday, he didn’t have a strange connection with a librarian. Yesterday, people weren’t trying to kill her.
BOOK 2: HOW MUCH LONGER CAN HE KEEP HIS SECRET AND HIS FAVORITE HUMAN SAFE?
Michael Vanderhorst has always been a lone wolf. Or lone vampire? Whatever. Point is, this ancient gentleman vampire is obsessed. She’s quirky, a horrible dresser, and the cutest librarian he’s ever seen. The question is, why her? In four hundred years, no one has ever captured his attention like this. He must find out, which is why he just signed on as her new assistant.
The problem is, she has no idea vampires exist or that she’s just broken one of their laws. As the leader of his territory, Michael has been ordered by his council to turn her or kill her. “Over my dead body!”
To overturn the ruling, Michael needs the council on his side, and right now they’re asking him to hunt down and execute five hundred vampires no one can seem to locate. Unfortunately, his assassin days are long over, and he’s not so sure he can go back to killing.
But with Miriam’s life on the line and their unusual bond growing stronger each day, will he dust off the old sword or give her the bite that will make her his forever?
BOOK 3: FALLING IN LOVE WITH A LIBRARIAN JUST CAN’T GET MORE AWKWARD…
Michael Vanderhorst is not your usual vampire. For starters, he works in a library, is in love with Miriam, his hot nerdy human boss who has no clue what he is, and he looks like a college student.
In reality, Michael is an ancient deadly vampire, an ex-assassin, and is currently the de facto king of his kind ever since their ruling party disappeared. To where? He doesn’t know, but if he wants his life back, he’ll have to find out. (Mystery!) Especially because a civil war is brewing, and being king makes his librarian a mark for his enemies. She is, after all, his biggest weakness.
With a global uprising about to explode, Michael must give her the protection of his army. Only one problem: She must become his queen first. But every attempt he makes to tell her the truth is met with extreme hostility. “Vampires aren’t real. That’s crazy talk, Michael!” Clearly, the topic frightens her.
With time running out and her life on the line, Michael is left with one option: Marry her. Without her knowing.
Can he pull it off? And what will happen when the fight comes to their door?
#BookSale “Population: An Alien Invasion SciFi Romance (Population Book One)” by Elizabeth Stephens
Population cover
First they took the world. Then they came for mine.
Aliens invaded eleven years ago and now they’ve taken the last of the family I had left. Prepared to fight my way through Population to save her, I know what I’m up against: Ruthless human scavengers, violent gangs, and rogue aliens that are built for conquering and have a taste for human blood and flesh.
When I come across a dying alien, I loot his corpse, the good little scavenger that I am. I don’t expect him to come back from the dead, hunt me…or save my neck. And when he looks at me, I begin to think that he might be hungry for something else.
He’s my enemy for life and I have every intention of keeping my distance, until he offers me the one thing I can’t turn down.
He offers to help me get her back.
Set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest, Population is a full-length (97k word), action-packed, alien invasion SciFi romance featuring a strong female lead kicking butt alongside a possessive alien alpha. Population ends on a cliffhanger, but finds its happily ever after in book 2, Saltlands – available right now for #99cents. All other books in the Population series are standalones, though I do recommend reading them in order.
*Readers should note that this is a violent read, and off-screen assault does take place in this book and may be a trigger for some.
#GuestPost “Mindworm” by David Pollard
Thank you for the opportunity to provide a guest post for your blog.David Pollard
I thought I’d take a look at self-publishing and answer the question, “why did you choose to independently publish your books, including your new release Mindworm?”
Self-publishing actually pre-dates the mass market book publishing industry by some centuries. Even Henry VIII self-published a volume that earned him the title ‘Defender of the Faith’ from the Pope – but then I suppose Henry had no problem getting readers!
Back before technology changed the game most authors who didn’t have ready access to a printing press and a book-binder would wind up paying for those services to get their work produced in a saleable form. Inevitably this fostered the ‘Vanity Press’ where – for large sums of money – the gullible could be told how wonderful their book was and wind up with a thousand hard back copies of unsaleable and unreadable books in their back bedrooms. The ‘Vanity Presses’ are still there – buyer beware – but technology is placing more power in the hands of the author should they choose to use it.
I chose the independent publishing route primarily because I’m only too aware that time is passing. What would be the best investment of my time? Trying to persuade a publishing house that I’d make money for them or trying to find readers who would find my stories entertaining.
dpollard
kr
This, I think, points out the essential difference between me as a writer and the commercial publishing industry. I want to be read, to entertain and give readers something to think about and talk about. The industry wants to make a profit with as little risk as possible. Then I suppose I’m lucky that I make my living elsewhere.
Secondly, I wanted to keep control. Certainly control of what I write – although I’m not above listening to my team of trusted beta-readers – I don’t want to be in a position of making fundamental changes to my work to meet a publisher’s vision – with always the threat that failure to comply means the deal is off. It is not just creative control, however. I want to control my time and what I do with it – meeting deadlines and producing a prescribed follow up book is not for me. All of which does not make me a good fit for the commercial publisher anyway.
Self-publishing now, though, also comes with a requirement to learn how to use the technology that’s available. Fortunately, I’m a bit of a nerd like that and I found the process challenging in a good way. When the writing’s done I really enjoy the process of making a book and seeing a saleable item appear at the end of the process. It’s probably a fit because I love books as objects as well as sources of entertainment and enlightenment.
The real shock for a self-publisher comes at the end of the process. The marketing! I’m a typical Brit – keep a stiff upper lip and don’t brag about yourself. It’s taken a while to come to terms with the fact that no-one is going to bang my drum for me – it’s all down to me. And getting a book to market is a pretty special achievement. Now – I’m trying to understand the marketing process and it’s starting to be enjoyable – especially being in contact with my readers – every one of which I cherish.
EXCERPT
Sleep was pulling and tugging at every part of her physically and mentally. The long yawn that left her mouth made her shake her head. The minute she hit the mattress she was asleep in seconds.
Where am I?
When the thought entered her mind she knew she was dreaming, but wherever she was, she’d never been there before. She looked down at her body and saw she was still wearing the bathrobe. A chill crept up her spine because this felt eerily real. In any other dream she wore a random outfit. The hallway was massive, like she was in a palace. Her bare feet made no sound as she tiptoed down the corridor, frightened she would encounter someone. This place had an ominous feeling. She shouldn’t be here.
“Wake up. Wake up. Wake up.” The whispered words did nothing, because she remained in the dream or whatever it was.
A large doorway loomed at the end of the hall. The door was slightly ajar. Against her better judgment she crept towards it.
What am I doing? Why am I going to investigate? I should head in the other direction.
Despite the screaming thoughts in her brain she proceeded to the door, frantically looking around for anyone or anything that might lurk in the shadows. The sliver of an opening was enough for her to press her eye to and attempt to look around without being caught. It was a bedroom. There were floor to ceiling windows on the far side of the room. There must have been a balcony or terrace situated outside because the flimsy, gauzy curtains billowed out from the windows, caught by a breeze. In the dimness she could barely make out a sleeping form in the cavernous bed. The room seemed devoid of anything else, save a large armoire.
Something made her crack the door open and walk inside.
What are you doing you crazy person? Go back. Get out of here.
Still she moved closer, her curiosity carrying her closer and closer. Seconds later, she stood on the stairs that led up to the bed. Her hand and arm shook as she reached out to touch the shoulder of the sleeping form that had their back to her.
“Who’s there?”
His sinister voice froze her in place. The hairs all over her body stood on end. This was Killian’s bedroom. He rolled over and sat up. The covers slipped down revealing his naked chest. His green eyes scanned the darkened chamber. She was sure his vampire sight allowed him to see just fine despite the lack of light. The crazy thing was, he seemed to look right through her like she wasn’t even there. She waved her hand in front of his face.
“You can’t see me?”
His eyes continued to search the room. While she was definitely dumbstruck that she was invisible to him, her mind chose that moment to have a stupid thought.
If he’s a vampire why isn’t he sleeping in a coffin or underground?
She wanted to kick herself.
Really? Right now is not the time for this.
“I can smell the witch on you, Willow.” His nostrils flared.
Her body went rigid with terror.
He knows I’m here.
The derision in his statement made her wonder if he knew she was staying at the Walker Coven. After the attack he already knew she traveled with witches.
“I will find you.” He sounded so sure she swallowed to keep from choking and clutched her throat feeling like he was strangling her.
Wake up!
Her eyes flew open, and she took in a deep, much needed breath before she sat up and looked around the beige and white, eighteenth century bedroom she occupied at the coven and sighed.
Excerpt
            A couple minutes later, she followed him. Whatever he’d prepared smelled delicious. He moved around the kitchen unsure. She raised her eyebrows while she watched him. He caught the gesture and looked embarrassed. “Most of the time, I cheat and use magic so I can do something else. I haven’t manually cooked in a while.”
            She looked at him wide-eyed, with her mouth gaped open. Even though he’d told her earlier, they were witches she still was having a hard time believing it. “You cook with magic, like they do in Harry Potter? That’s so cool. I know you told everyone not to use it, but just show me a little something. I won’t tell.” Awe and child-like wonder permeated her voice. “Cross my heart.” She made the sign of the cross over her heart.
            “You heard everything didn’t you?” His eyebrow quirked upwards, daring her to lie.
She gave him a sheepish smile and looked away before she continued talking about magic, in the hopes he’d forget her listening to their conversation. “I would be the ultimate multi-tasker if I was a witch. Say ‘Abracadabra’ and make the food magically appear on the plate or something.” Willow was giddy with excitement.
            Eli chuckled. “I’m not a wizard. I don’t say ‘Abracadabra.’” He shook his head.
            His explanation confused her. “What does that mean? I thought wizard was a name for a male witch.”
            He sighed and put down the pot he was holding. That comment appeared to get his undivided attention. “You watch too much television. First, regardless of gender, we’re known as witches, those of us that practice white magic. Warlocks are witches that practice black magic. Wizards are charlatans, posers. They don’t know magic, but are exceptional at trickery so they can give someone who doesn’t know any better the illusion they do.”
            She digested the information he’d just given her.
            “That’s why everyone went silent earlier when Matty referenced black magic, because none of you practice it?”
            He nodded and picked up the pot of noodles. “Yes. Now may I finish making dinner?”
            “So you’re not going to cook with magic?” She was expecting him to do tricks and wow her. Disappointment marred her brow, when he didn’t whip out a magic wand or say a spell.
            “You just said so yourself, that you overheard me tell everyone magic is off limits.”
            Her shoulders slumped in discontent and she pouted. “You can’t do even a tiny little spell?”
            “Nope.”
            She rolled her eyes. “Great. A witch who can’t do any spells or magic.”
            Eli looked offended. “I didn’t say I can’t do magic. I’m just unable to do any at this time.”
            “Uh, huh.”
            He bristled at her disinterest and she had to hold back a sly grin. “Wizard.” She mumbled under her breath, knowing it would get a rise out of him.
            “I’m not a wizard! I can do magic!”
            If she lit a match and threw it at him, he would have gone up in flames he was fuming so hard.
“Whatever.” Maybe she’d just…
