“Hey you,” a soft voice commanded.  “Open your eyes please.”

He tried to obey, struggling to push past the lingering darkness that clung to him like a second skin.  God, he felt horrible.

“That’s it,” she soothed.  “Open your eyes.  Look at me.”

Finally, he managed to raise his eyelids.  An angel leaned over him, staring into his eyes.  She smiled at him so he smiled back.  He had always thought it would be demons that would come collect him when he died so it amazed him that heaven was calling.

“Ah, a set of beautiful baby blues,” she murmured, stroking his cheek.  “Hello, handsome.”

He opened his mouth to say something but the words wouldn’t come. His tongue felt swollen, dry.  He forced himself to swallow to try to get some saliva flowing.

“W-what happened?”

She cocked her head.  “Bad hooch I’m thinking.  Gotta be careful of certain juice joints.  Come,” she said, holding out her hand.  “Let’s get you sitting upright.”

He hadn’t realized he’d been lying down but as she helped him up, he realized the halo around her head had been nothing more but the flickering of a street light accentuating the midnight hue of her hair.  When he was vertical once more, he finally saw all of the woman’s features.  Short bobbed hair held back by a headband made of crystal beads while dark eyes watched him from under thin, perfectly arched eyebrows.  Her lips were a cupid’s bow, painted a deep red.  Her skin a flawless pale shade that contrasted sharply with her heavily made up eyes.

“Like what you see?” she asked.

He blinked.  “I always like my fans.  Where am I?”

One of those thin eyebrows arched.  “That hooch must’ve really  made you balled up.  You’re off Hollywood Boulevard, of course, belly up in an alley.”

He looked around, completely baffled.  How the hell did he get here?

Where was the stage?  The screaming fans?  Kieron, Van and Tony?

“Do you have a name, handsome?”

“Yeah, sorry.  I’m Dicen Burke.”

He waited.  He waited for the name to sink in, for her eyes to widen, for her to begin batting her eyes in an attempt to flirt her way into his bed.

“Juliet,” she said.  “Juliet Fox.  I was looking for my brother, Thayer, and figured I’d find him upchucking out here and instead I find a keen big six.  Say, you’re no drugstore cowboy are you?”

“Excuse me?”  Her lack of a response to his name, along with slang he didn’t understand, threw him.

“You know, a guy that hangs around street corners looking to pick up ladies.  Just so we’re clear on the matter, I ain’t that kind of girl,” she informed him, the smile on her face lessening the harshness of her tone.  “Have you seen another man out here, by chance, throwing up?”

She confused him.  He shook his head and then wished he hadn’t when it throbbed.  “God, I need an aspirin.”

SYNOPSIS

Two women connected by the same musical soul.

Two composers transposed across time into each other’s world by the mysterious forces of a priceless 18th Century cello.

In the final installment of the Song for a Lost Kingdom trilogy, Adeena Stuart and Katharine Carnegie search for the music that neither can complete on their own.

Finding themselves living three centuries apart and each assuming the identity of the other, Adeena and Katharine must overcome their own unique challenges, all the while hiding the truth of who they really are from those around them.

Adeena is pregnant in Scotland following the slaughter at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. Her husband James Drummond and his brother John Drummond, are being hunted as Jacobite traitors by the revengeful butchers of King George’s Hanoverian army.

Sentenced to cruel deaths, they escape to Ireland only to find even greater danger in the ruthless cunning of Henry ‘Hangman’ Hawley who will stop at nothing to extinguish any further rebellion against English dominance over Ireland and Scotland.

Adeena’s one comfort is the Duncan Cello and her music that inspires all who hear her perform. The cello is her companion through battles, fires, storms and floods. It is perhaps the only thing she can truly rely on.

Katharine meanwhile awakes in the year 2019, confused by even the simplest technologies and overwhelmed by the strange customs of the modern world.

Pregnant from an unknown father, and uncertain about whether true love lies in the past or present, she finds respite in her music and the only thing familiar about this strange place – the Duncan Cello, now a prize artifact of the National Gallery of Canada.

Adeena and Katharine find a way to compose a score that reflects their turmoil in both their lives – ‘The Heart Beats in Time.’

Together they will see the story through to the final bars.

Song for a Lost Kingdom, Book III is a novel of music, history, and love that finds a way to conquer the barriers of time.

Curl up with a copy and lose yourself in this fast-paced adventure that will keep you hooked until the final page.

EXCERPT

Katharine stared at her reflection in the mirror. She was called ‘Adeena’ in this heavenly afterlife. Was the woman who stared back really her?

Katharine touched her pale cheek. It was warm against her soft fingers. She opened her emerald eyes wide, staring at their translucent clarity, dancing in the light as if they were teasing her with their secrets. She smiled, admiring the white straight teeth they had given her, and the long, copper-tinged hair, a reminder perhaps of her own time on earth?

“I’m Adeena,” she said to the reflection. “Adeena Stuart. And I live in heaven now.”

She laughed as she slipped on the clothes that her ‘mother’ had left for her. She dropped them off last night and said that in the morning she would return to take her home.

Home?

Somehow the thought of it made her eyes wet, but not in a sad way. She might be dead, but she was so thankful for all the happiness she felt for this place.

She wiped her eyes and surveyed the odd collection of garments that had been left for her. The most confusing was the corset – if that’s what it was. It was black and had two thin straps and cups that must be used to hold her bosom in place? There was also a tiny, sheer garment that seemed almost invisible. Were these the drawers ladies wore in heaven?

A fleecy bright crimson sweater and dark britches, fashioned out of some sort of flexible cotton or linen fabric, completed her ensemble. It was the type of clothing Jaqueline and Tara, the dark-haired one, wore whenever they came to visit. There were also socks and shoes that fit her feet perfectly.

When she was done, she sat down and waited for Jacqueline, Adeena’s mother, a spirited woman who always seemed pleased to see her. If Jacqueline’s role was that of maternal guide, so be it.

Katharine glanced at her cello in the corner. Tara had left it behind for her. It was the only connection to her old life and perhaps the reason why she made it up here in the first place. It was unlike all the magical devices in this world – the ones that glowed, and chimed, and must be powered by the spirit of God Himself.

The cello from Maestro Duncan was plain. It had no special power. She found her bow and pulled the cello between her legs. Without thinking, she slowly began to play the music she had been rehearsing at Kinnaird when somehow she slipped away and the world around her went dark.

As she played her unnamed composition, it flowed through her and took her far away from this place. All the strange surroundings disappeared, leaving only her and her music.

She had found heaven.

EXCERPT

The ceiling was rustic wood and four empty coat hooks hung just above the headboard of the bed I was lying on.

Seeing light from the corner of my eye, I turned my head toward it. The small room had another bed near the window, an iron stove in one corner, and a small table with two chairs in the other. The walls were made of the same rustic wood as the ceiling. Outside, the repetitive sound stopped. A few moments later, the door opened to reveal a man carrying an armful of wood.

His scarlet coat and Stetson hat announced his profession.

“What the shit? A Mountie?” I gaped, jolting upright. My joints ached, and my skin smarted as though I was covered in bruises.

“I see you’re awake. How are you feeling?” the Mountie asked.

“Who are you? Where am I? How did I get here?” My panicked voice sounded unfamiliar in my ears.

He walked over to the corner and stacked the wood near the stove. “You must have hit your head pretty hard there. I’m Constable Delaforet. You’re in Farrloch. As for how you got here, I found you in the forest near the barracks, half-clothed, unconscious, and chilled to the bone. I carried you in here.”

Farrloch? Alberta?

I eyed the Mountie, squinting suspiciously, as he removed his hat and placed it on the table.

His steady voice sounded as though he was trying to calm a frightened animal, and his light blue eyes were soft with pity. His brown hair was tousled from his hat, and his face was shadowed by what looked like two-day stubble. He seemed to be in his mid-twenties, around my age.

I took in his strong, broad shoulders and solid frame, and I knew I wouldn’t make it past him if he tried to stop me.

I was unconscious in a forest in Canada after I got hit by a train in Chicago? I looked under the blanket at what I was wearing. He said I was half-naked.

I wore what seemed to me to be pajamas: white cotton capris with lace cuffs and a short-sleeved chemise. What the…? Okay, this obviously isn’t real. I must be in a coma somewhere.

I nodded to myself before swinging my bare feet out of bed.

“You should rest, Miss,” Constable Delaforet advised as I got to my feet. When the blanket fell away to reveal my pajamas, he cleared his throat and averted his eyes.

“I’m fine,” I assured him. I mean, what can happen in a coma dream anyway? I marveled at how vivid everything was. It didn’t feel at all like a dream. Then again, I’d never been in a coma before, so maybe it was normal.

I took a few steps toward the Mountie, amazed at the feeling of the cold floorboards under my feet. Delaforet instinctively reached out to steady me when I wobbled a little. His large hands were warm on my shoulders.

“Miss, I really must insist you rest until you’re well. At the very least, you can’t go out in your undergarments.”

Undergarments? What kind of coma dream is this? “Tell me, Dudley, what year is it in this coma-created world?”

His eyebrows pulled together in concern. “Miss, this is very much the real world. We just celebrated the turn of a new century. It is 1900. Please, it’s clear you’re disoriented.”

I allowed him to lead me back to bed. 1900, huh? My subconscious is amazing. Everything is so detailed.

I stared at Delaforet’s profile as he tucked my legs under the blankets. Have I seen him somewhere before? I’ve heard that your brain never dreams faces it hasn’t seen. Where would I have seen such a hot guy? I feel like I’d remember that. A movie? Well, since this is a dream, I can do whatever I want. Right?

Seldom lucky in love, Paige finds herself competing with her best friend for his attention, knowing there can be no good end for their stolen moments of passion. Can she stay under the radar of the medical and legal communities to carry out his requests? And how will their complicated pasts bring them together physically, emotionally and professionally in a successful, if unethical, partnership?

Many lives will be changed, but at what cost… and to whom?

EXCERPT

The following is extracted from the first chapter of The Cure. Paige has just learned that she has early-onset dementia, and she’s struggling to wrap her mind around its implications for her and her life.

Redding Falls, Georgia

Present Day

Day 1

Chapter One

Paige Bergeron

It started out as a bad day all around and I was ready for my luck to change. It comes in threes they say, whoever they are. It’s been pouring rain since yesterday morning and the beavers have rebuilt their dam and flooded the mile-long main road leading into my cabin. My trusty old Honda doesn’t have four-wheel drive so I can’t even venture out over the muddy back road. And Dr. Willis informed me that yes, she’s sure I do have early onset Alzheimer’s because the tests came back showing the telltale deposits in my brain. I’m only forty-four. Too young for such a dire diagnosis.

One of my grandmas had dementia, maybe Alzheimer’s, maybe not. My folks died in their fifties in a boating accident near St. Thomas almost twenty years ago, so I’ll never know if one or both of them might have gotten it had they aged. I do know the dreaded signs are there for me. I forgot Selma’s birthday. I took my pets to the vet for their appointment on the wrong day. Words escape me when I try to describe or explain things. Every day I wake up wondering what new thing will go wrong.

I walked out on the covered deck at the back of my cabin and listened to the creek rushing over the rocks below.  I love April in north Georgia, when it’s getting green and blossomy, with a chill still in the air. Springtime is my favorite, so much promise of good things to come. I tried not to let my thoughts sink into despair. My daughter would have been a young woman by now, and able to take care of me. Maybe it’s for the best she wasn’t anchored to a demented mother. Isn’t it, Rose? But no, I stopped myself from going down that road. I needed to focus on what was around me, right here and now: the damp earthy smell, the blur of soft pinks and greens surrounding me in the trees. Not think about her, about how long I’d be able to do for myself, or even know what I was doing.

I’d taken a few days off from my job as a pediatric physician’s assistant at Redding Falls Medical Center to lie back and figure out what I wanted to do, what I could do. I was planning to go back tomorrow if I could find the place…. Just kidding.

My three cats, tabby littermates April, May and Juney, hovered with me under the overhang of the deck, tails up, as though willing the hard rain to stop, eager to be chasing our endless population of moles and voles. Will my pets wind up in the wild one day when I forget to care for them? All of a sudden it felt like everything had a time stamp on it, but the dates looked fuzzy and I couldn’t read them, only guess at what they were trying to reveal.
