#Featured “Adulthood Rites (The Xenogenesis Trilogy Book 2)” by Octavia Butler

The futures of both mankind and an alien species rest in the hands of one hybrid son in the award-winning science fiction author’s masterful sequel to Dawn.

Nuclear war had nearly destroyed mankind when the Oankali came to the rescue, saving humanity—but at a price. The Oankali survive by mixing their DNA with that of other species, and now on Earth they have permitted no child to be born without an Oankali parent. The first true hybrid is a boy named Akin—son of Lilith Iyapo— and to the naked eye he looks human, for now. He is born with extraordinary sensory powers, understanding speech at birth, speaking in sentences at two months old, and soon developing the ability to see at the molecular level. More powerful than any human or Oankali, he will be the architect of both races’ intergalactic future. But before he can carry this new species into the stars, Akin must decide which unlucky souls will stay behind.

At once a coming-of-age story, science fiction adventure, and philosophical exploration, Butler’s ambitious and breathtaking novel ultimately raises the question of what it means to be human. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author’s estate.

EXCERPT

Two-liter paint cans were lobbed at the front of the car, covering the front windshield and blocking Lea’s view of the gate into the CBD.

Without help, she would be lucky to reach the safety behind the wall. If the sensors on the car were disabled, she would be screwed. No matter how thick the armor, a determined attack would eventually find a way inside.

A series of pops and white plumes of smoke was the only indication help was on the way. Despite the heavy filtration system of the vehicle, she tasted the sting of pepper spray. Guards on the wall covered her approach.

Never to let passengers stress out over the environment, the car increased the oxygen level in the cabin while turning up the volume of the insipid relaxation music. “Remain calm, the situation is under control.” The inane mechanical voice spoke softly to her.

Today wasn’t the day she’d be pulled from the safety of her ride to be murdered in the streets by club-wielding thugs. Though she expected that might be the way she one day would meet her end.

Lea relaxed slightly. The way to the CBD cleared under the rain of teargas canisters. The defenders of the gate moved to suppress the crowd. A line of plexiglass shields and truncheons marched toward the transport.

On the wall, mounted water cannons poised to strike the mob with high-pressure jets of saltwater.

Lea’s celebration proved to be short-lived. An explosion rocked the car. The storefront next to the gate erupted in a flash, shredding protesters and defenders alike before her eyes. Lea could no longer hear the hum of the drive wheels. The ringing in her ears covered all other sounds. The steady ring of automatic fire pummeled the walls of her chariot.

They were never supposed to happen to each other.

A love such as theirs was never supposed to endure, not in the highly controlled society of The Sectors.

Yet, a chance encounter at dinner led to breakfast at a diner down the road. They each thought they had found their perfect soulmate, but neither could have imagined the awful truth they would face.

Detailed Book Description:

Agent Christopher Rockford has been the best assassin in the agency for eight years, and he loves his job.
He loves his solitary lifestyle.
He loves keeping the world safe by getting rid of anarchists who threaten their orderly society.
He loves his comfortable life as a member of the wealthy Coastal upper class.

But in pursuit of a target, he meets Jenna, a mysterious civilian who belongs to society’s lowest and most shunned group. Being around her is life-changing. She makes him feel for the first time, and he is instantly captivated.

She boldly stands in the face of everything he has ever known and was taught to believe. He begins to see the world through her eyes, causing him to question his job, his lifestyle, and The Order he so obediently serves. It’s not long before he can’t imagine his life without her.

There’s just one problem: He knows she would leave him if she ever found out about his job. He knows this because he asked her how she felt about assassins in their government, and she was utterly disgusted with the idea, even though she believes their existence is just a myth.

As their relationship grows and intensifies, he knows he cannot keep the truth from her for long.

But Jenna has her own secrets to keep.

Set in an orderly world of near-perfect surveillance, genetically modified humans, and extreme socioeconomic divide, The Unexpected Inlander will take you through Chris’s journey of self-discovery and learning that change begins within.

***This edition includes a preview of the sequel at the end of the book.***

*Author’s unsolicited content warning: The main character is an assassin, so there is some violence in a few scenes.*

What I love about this book: It’s a thriller, even though there’s no twist or surprise ending. It’s still a heart-thumping read, even as you know both sides of the story. The book does not depend on a big surprise because it’s about a relationship and love and how the society that surrounds you can work its way into your subconscious.

What else I love about this book: It is so much more than a love story. It contains clean romance, intrigue, suspense, and world-building with futuristic science fiction elements. Additionally, it touches on discussion topics such as government control of equity, the ethics of genetic editing and surveillance, the importance of perspective-taking, unconscious bias, self-acceptance, and coming to terms with one’s unchosen identities.

It is a story of love, but it is ultimately a story of self-discovery and how meeting just one person can completely change your life.

From an early age Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Voice Arts Award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray despised reading. Truly hated it with a passion.

And audiobooks? Even worse. Those were for people too lazy to read (not to be confused with those like himself who didn’t want to read to begin with).

R.C. eventually got older and wiser (he was always good-looking) and eschewing his capricious convictions fell head-over-heels with reading. Not just to learn words like “eschew” and “capricious” so he could use them in a bio line, but because someone was actually going to give him money to do it.

Note: R.C.’s gorgeous wife and three beautiful children begged him not to make this his official bio. Clearly he misunderstood.

Q&A with Narrator R.C. Bray
  • When did you know you wanted to be an audiobook narrator?
    • When I heard Frank Muller for the first time (The Dark Tower, Book II: The Drawing of the Three). I always thought a narrator just “read” the book. When Frank started doing character voices and acting and just all-around engaging me as a listener, I knew that with my background it’s what I’m supposed to do.
  • How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    • My last job before becoming a full-time narrator, was as Senior Producer and Voiceover for a company owned by a wonderful guy named Mark Kaplowe who was the voice of HBO, Butterfinger, Zest, and other big businesses in the 90s. When his son was born, he wanted to eliminate traveling into NYC so he could be around him as much as possible. So he combined his love for automobiles and voiceover prowess, and began an ad company for local car dealerships. His big thing was “growing his business” and he loved audiobooks that were related to just that. Since I had a commute of about 45 minutes (both ways) he wanted me to listen to them as well. I listened to countless business audiobooks before I decided to try a fiction title – The Dark Tower, Book I: The Gunslinger by Stephen King seemed like a good, short place to start. George Guidall was an outstanding introduction to audiobooks (Fiction), but it wasn’t until Frank Muller that I actually made an effort to find out more about becoming a narrator.
  • Did you find it difficult to “break into” audiobook narration? What skill/tool helped you the most when getting started?
    • I had two great champions get me through the door: Pat Fraley and Scott Brick. Bringing my years of acting experience to narration impressed them enough to make suggestions, introductions, and continued support. Also, ACX was launched the same time I got into narration. Being able to use that as a means to navigate the process (along with many patient authors, rights holders, and independent publishers), was a godsend. Several of the titles I did via ACX garnered attention from bigger publishers and off I went.
  • What type of training have you undergone?
    • I was a CTA (Communications/Theatre Arts) major in college that performed Off-Broadway and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I also attended the Connecticut School of Broadcasting where, because of my theatre background, I excelled during the voiceover portion. It was my abilities in voiceover that was a catalyst to getting the job at Kaplowe Studios.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating?
    • I keep from burning out by thinking of my past jobs. I don’t ever want to have to go back to doing any of them. The thought of that lights a massive fire in me.
  • What are your favorite and least favorite parts of narrating an audiobook?
    • Unless it’s really brilliant writing, my least favorite part is when I get to the middle and realize I’m only halfway done. My favorite part is being exposed to books I would likely have never picked up.
  • Is there a particular genre you feel unsuited for? Have you ever declined a project because you didn’t think you were right for it?
    • I’d love to be suited for children’s/YA novels, but I’m afraid my deep voice doesn’t jibe well with them.
  • How closely do you prefer to work with authors?
    • Enough to get certain information but definitely not so much they start to direct. You wrote it, now let me read it.
  • Who are your “accent inspirations”?
    • Frank Muller, Paul Michael, Scott Brick
  • What types of things are harmful to your voice?
    • No idea. I’m not a vocal warm-up kind of guy. I just go for it. Pneumonia sucks though.
  • Has anyone ever recognized you from your voice?
    • No, but after I tell people what I do (only if they ask, I don’t like bringing it up) they inevitably “hear it now!”
  • How does audiobook narration differ from other types of voiceover work you’ve done?
    • Stamina and dedication. TV/Radio spots are “drop-ins” while narration is an ongoing and much more rewarding process. The product is so much more satisfying.
  • Do you read reviews for your audiobooks?
    • When the mood strikes
  • If so, which ones stand out to you most, positive or negative?
    • Negative. I love them! They’re hysterical! Seriously – what kind of day/week/life must you be having to so viciously attack a narrator, story, etc.? It’s a book f*cking audiobook. Relax. But if you keep posting them, I’ll keep laughing my ass off at them!
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • Oh just shut the f*ck up already.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring audiobook narrators?
    • You can find it all on my website – www.rcbray.com – under the “Two Cents” heading.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Just going to keep on keeping on.
  • Bonus question: Any funny anecdotes from inside the recording studio?
    • Plenty. But I’m afraid I’ll just have to keep those to myself!

Q&A with Author Craig Alanson: Part II
  • If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?
    • Fans have asked what aliens in the books look like, and my answer is they look like whatever the art director if the TV series thinks they look like. Same with casting actors. Whatever I say will get someone upset. The ‘Expeditionary Force’ Facebook page has many fans who argue about that subject.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I would say nothing. Actually, I would say ‘Umm’ and smile and nod politely, and then never speak to them again during their sad, lonely little lives. The world is full of idiots, never waste your time arguing with them.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • By hitting the ‘Send’ button to email the manuscript to Podium. Then I clean my laptop, open a new Word document and start the next book. Usually my wife and I also go out for a nice dinner.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • My wife shows me that we have to make a mortgage payment at the end of the month. I find that very inspiring.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • Writing a series can be easier because you already know the world and the characters. It can be more difficult because with each book, you have to keep that world and those characters fresh and interesting. With Expeditionary Force, I am writing to a series outline, so it is really like writing a really long book. Really long, like the books you were forced to read over the summer in high school.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Not yet. I think about them constantly while I’m awake.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    • There is writing advice in one of my blogs on craigalanson.com but basically my advice is write a book you would want to read, and write. Write a lot, that is how you develop your style and discover what works for you.
  • Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
    • Find a good partner. Working with Podium has been very good for me. Also, do not try to narrate the book yourself unless you have already been doing voice work and are good at it. Also, a good narrator is worth every penny (and more!).
  • What’s next for you?
    • The next book

Nominee, 2018 Audie Awards — Audiobook of the Year

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn’t win. And that was the good news.

The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits.

When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved. The UN Expeditionary Force hitched a ride on Kristang ships to fight the Ruhar wherever our new allies thought we could be useful. So, I went from fighting with the US Army in Nigeria to fighting in space. It was lies, all of it. We shouldn’t even be fighting the Ruhar; they aren’t our enemy. Our allies are.

I’d better start at the beginning.

Q&A with Author Craig Alanson: Part I
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • I send the manuscript to Podium, they give it to Bob. Magic happens
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Dictionaries make for terrible audio. Also any “classic” you were forced to read in school like Beowulf would be a terrible audiobook, because it is a long, boring way for teachers to torture students. Although if RC Bray narrated a dictionary, I would at least listen to a sample.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • For the first three books, no. Back then, I did not expect anyone would read my books, so I thought there was no point creating audio versions.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • Podium selected RC Bray and Tim Gerard Reynolds and MacLeod Andrews, and each of them were perfect for the books they narrated.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • Pronunciation tips yes, and in a few cases I did send notes about a character’s accent, background etc. if it was not already clear from the text. Other than that, let the pros do their jobs. I did not give RC Bray notes about how I imagined Skippy’s voice, so Bob created it by himself. The voice is exactly as I imagined!
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • I have never been a wizard, a soldier, traveled on a spaceship or talked with a beer can, so, no. Ok, maybe I have talked to a beer can but that is another story.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • My long-suffering wife knows that when I am 2/3rds of the way through writing a book, I am annoyed with it. But that is mostly because I am excited about writing the next book, and the current book is in the way. I maintain enthusiasm for writing, by only writing books that excite me.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I listen to audiobooks when I’m running, at the gym, driving, etc. They are convenient because they are on my phone or my watch so I never have to remember where I put my book or Kindle. Also, a good narrator brings a story to life in a way that doesn’t happen when I am reading words on a page.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • My writing style is heavy on dialog, light on description. That makes the story move faster. One issue is that the rapid-fire back-and-forth dialog in my books can be difficult for narrators because they have to constantly switch between voices, so I am terribly sorry that I am not sorry at all about that.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • This question is awkward because I already did. All I can say is, I would never have predicted a Cleveland Browns football dynasty.

“Everfair: A Novel” by Nisi Shawl

Everfair cover

~~~
From noted short story writer Nisi Shawl comes a brilliant alternate-history novel set in the Belgian Congo.
What if the African natives developed steam power ahead of their colonial oppressors? What might have come of Belgium’s disastrous colonization of the Congo if the native populations had learned about steam technology a bit earlier?
Fabian Socialists from Great Britain join forces with African-American missionaries to purchase land from the Belgian Congo’s “owner,” King Leopold II. This land, named Everfair, is set aside as a safe haven, an imaginary Utopia for native populations of the Congo as well as escaped slaves returning from America and other places where African natives were being mistreated.
Shawl’s speculative masterpiece manages to turn one of the worst human rights disasters on record into a marvelous and exciting exploration of the possibilities inherent in a turn of history. Everfair is told from a multiplicity of voices: Africans, Europeans, East Asians, and African Americans in complex relationships with one another, in a compelling range of voices that have historically been silenced. Everfair is not only a beautiful book but an educational and inspiring one that will give the reader new insight into an often ignored period of history.
