3/5 Stars!

At the end of Hudson’s story, I wasn’t too happy with Miss Stacy, but I tried to clear the negative clutter from my mind so I could enjoy this read, and watch the last two of the group get their HEA.

Both Maverick and Stacy harbor inner pain they’re afraid to let anyone see. He, because of the loss of his world and everything he knew. She, because of the loss of control of her own life caused by the devastation of illness and subsequent recovery. Grumpiness, sarcasm and caustic remarks are their shields. Sometimes, it’s understandable. Sometimes, it’s just entirely too mean-spirited.

When Stacy sets out to fix the mess she’s created before even actually “meeting” Maverick, she pushed my buttons. It was more like some reality show challenge quest she had to win. Meh. All she had to do was find the man and talk it out, but she instead found fault with him misunderstanding her remark and storming out. In Maverick’s defense, how was he to know her careless offhand remark was a covering lie? He didn’t even KNOW her. She bounded into the apartment talking a mile a minute, not giving anyone else a chance to complete a sentence. Double Meh.

Still trying to see Stacy in a positive light though. Just when I thought she’d won me over with the easy acceptance of Maverick’s origins, and admitting her own fears, Stacy lets me down by allowing the insipid remarks of a gossipy co-worker, and a cheating, lying ex-boyfriend to mess with her self-esteem. How? WHY? This opens a whole new can of ready-made drama and Stacy gets to sabotage the relationship while swan diving into a big old vat of self-pity (and perhaps a bit of self-loathing?) Had she always felt second best to the sister who put her first and would do anything for her? Misunderstanding a conversation between Hudson and Maverick leads Stacy to create a scene, then storm off. (Um, wait a sec. What did she accuse Maverick of doing?) Ten seconds of allowing anyone else to complete a sentence would have resolved the “problem.”

Much like with Cutlass and Chloe, I’m glad Maverick got the ending he wanted. For me, Stacy is an afterthought. She acted more like a twin to Chloe than to Macy, more consumed with Maverick’s appearance and sex with him than anything else. (Romance waves from the bench. “Put me in, coach!”)

I have never had a problem reading anything by this author, but this one brought me far too close to the DNF zone. Stacy turned off my sympathy from the beginning, and was wearing my empathy down fast. I needed her to pick a personality and stay with it. Hopefully, one I could tolerate. Contrary to popular trends, “sassy” and “feisty” are not always positive things, but Maverick was happy, and that was enough for me.

4/5 Stars!

Another cute story from this author.

Hudson and Macy are great together, even if she was a bit hesitant in the beginning (and understandably so). Hudson’s eternal optimism even before he met Macy was just too adorable. He faltered slightly after Macy sent him away – still don’t get that. She’s studying to be a doctor, and was constantly spouting off clinical terms and definitions. Her response to Hudson’s secret just felt ‘off’. Not saying she had to be his number one cheerleader…it’s not every day you meet an alien…it’s just in MY fertile mind, she should have been more calm…and sensible. Macy made it right, though – so I’m still in her corner!

You know whose corner I’m not in? Ugh! I could not dislike Stacy more if she ran around slapping old people.

They’re twins…I get it.

Macy almost lost her…I get it.

They only have each other…I GET IT! But Stacy was such an insufferable cow, and totally took advantage of Macy. Not to mention, everything she did had a ring of jealousy to it. Some might say she felt guilty because of Macy studying so hard, and felt it was because of her…but I am not in that group. Why go to all the trouble to manipulate your sister into a dating/marriage situation, and then call her constantly during the date…and/or invite yourself along on the date??? No, ma’am! I’m pretty sure Stacy was a pain in the @ss even before she became ill.

Tried to look at their relationship from every angle, but it just didn’t work for me at all.

Definitely surprised at Ampetheia and her muddled visions! They don’t have twins anywhere else in the galaxy? (This is a serious question!)

(Also still not a fan of Miss Chloe. Much respect for her talk to get Macy back on the right track, but she still annoys me to no end. Chloe just seems to go out of her way to be abrasive and a rude cow. UGH! Not sure what Cutlass sees in her besides sex…but whatever. Not used to this author having females that exhibit Typical Romance Heroine behavior…but I’m trying.)

I like Maverick, and Stacy has truly mucked things up! She’d better fix it!

book blurb

Unswerving Loyalty, Unquestioning Devotion, Unremitting Obedience. This is the vow of the Imperial Guard for his mistress, the Goddess-Empress.

Nobody said anything about Love.

Kristoff Verrai is assigned to find Charlotte Walker, the new Goddess-Empress, and bring her to be crowned. But she’s a Royal and he’s a commoner so loving her isn’t an option.

Tell that to his heart.

Now Charlotte and Kristoff are on a mission to get her to Femme 1 where the Golden Throne awaits her. But they’ll have to dodge assassin-droids, imposters, and the evil Count Doloroso to get there.

And after all that, they’ll have to fight the most dangerous threat at of all…the growing love between them.

***Kristoff, Head of the Imperial Guard has come to swear his vow of loyalty to Charlotte, a regular med student who–unbeknownst to her–also happens to be the Empress of the Galaxy. ***

“Oh!” Charlotte jumped and put a hand to her mouth, her green eyes getting wide.

Again, my body responded unbidden, my skin giving a bright flash of yellow in response to her fear and surprise.

“Why are you doing that?” she asked in a wavering voice. “What does that mean?”

“You mean my skin color?” I could have asked the same thing. It seemed strange to me that I was already so attuned to her that my body changed my skin tone without conscious effort on my part. But then I remembered the blood she had given me—that must be the cause.

Yes, I mean your freaking skin color!” Charlotte exclaimed. “Why does it keep changing?”

“My body is simply reacting to your moods—reflecting your emotions as you have them,” I explained.

“What? That…that’s bizarre! Why?” she demanded.

“Because I am yours, Goddess,” I told her simply.

It was what every Majoran male says to the female he chooses to give his life to and acknowledge as his own personal goddess but my words seemed to bother Charlotte deeply.

“You’re mine? What does that mean?” she demanded. “I don’t even know you!”

“No, but you will. Come…” I led her to the small, padded couch she had behind her food-prep area. Once she was settled, I went to my knees before her once more.

“What are you doing?” She looked at me nervously. “Why do I get the feeling you’re about to propose?”

“Propose?” I frowned at her. “You fear I am asking you to be my bonded mate?”

“Um…I guess that’s one way to put it.” She nibbled her full lower lip nervously and I had to fight to keep my body from flashing orange in response to her emotion.

“Please don’t fear that,” I told her. “Though my life and my chastity are sworn to your service, I would never be a candidate for Royal Consort—my blood is not exalted enough. As I told you before, my mother was only a lesser noble.”

“Um…” She still seemed not to understand. “So then…why are you on your knees in front of me like that? It’s kind of, uh, making me nervous.”

“I know,” I said. “I can tell.”

Feeling the emotions of the Empress, even though none of us is her fated mate, is one of the unique attributes of the Imperial Guards. Most other males of the Twelve Peoples only feel the emotions of their chosen females after they bond. But for us, the ties of loyalty run so deep, we are intimately connected to she who sits upon the Golden Throne.

“Kristoff,” she began but I took her hands in mine, sending a charged tingle through both of us.

I knew well enough what that tingle meant—that the new Empress was a La-ti-zal, a female specially blessed with gifts from the Ancient Ones—and that we were sexually compatible.

I had never felt that tingle with my old mistress but then, she was forty years my senior and desired no one after her Consort had died. It was a shock to feel it when I touched my new mistress, but I refused to let it show on my face, even though Charlotte gave a little gasp.

“My Empress…my Goddess,” I began formally, looking into her lovely green eyes. “I, Kristoff Xander Verrai, am yours to command. My body shall be your shield. My blood is yours to spill, my shoulders shall carry your burdens, and my lips shall keep your secrets. My heart shall beat only for you. I will never leave you or forsake you—I will follow and protect you until the end of my days. Unswerving Loyalty, Unquestioning Devotion, Unremitting Obedience, and…” I paused for a moment, my throat working. “And Unending Love,” I said, though I hadn’t meant to say it. “These are the code and the credo of the Imperial Guard. Until I die, my Lady, I am yours.”

As I said the last words, a mighty surge ran between us—a rush of electrifying power—of a vow given and received. It was a sign that the Goddess of Mercy had heard and acknowledged my oath to my new mistress.

Charlotte must have felt it too because her eyes got wide and she tried to pull her hands out of mine.

“What was that?” she whispered in an awed voice.

“That was me tying myself to your service for life,” I said simply.
