#GuestPost Mothers & Daughters by Sylvia Broady, author of “Daughter Of The Sea”

tour banner

I am drawn to writing mother and daughter relationships, which I love.

Mothers and daughters have a special relationship. I speak from experience, both personally, and as a writer. On the annual Mothers’ Day, I pay tribute to my dear mother who died many years ago. I appreciate her struggle and the sacrifices she made to keep me safe in difficult circumstances.

From the moment of my daughter’s birth, she was precious to me. I nurtured her through babyhood to childhood, to those mystified teenage years, and guided her into womanhood. Now she is a mother herself and we share a closeness, an extra bond of understanding. Sometimes our roles are reversed and she becomes the mother and I her child. This is a wonderful act of caring and of enduring love.

In my book, Daughter of the Sea, I am Jessica and I find out that the woman I called mother wasn’t my mother. So who is my mother? And where is she? What is her name? She appears surrounded in a finely spun web of mystery. To my knowledge, only my late, beloved father knew of her existence. So I am a daughter searching for her mother. I dream of her, this mystical mother, and see her floating in the sea, like a mermaid with her long hair flowing. I reach out to her, trying to catch hold of her hands and draw her close to me, to embrace her in my arms, but she disappears, becoming invisible once more.

Alone, I stand on the seashore, bereft of my unknown mother and her love.

In my book, The Lost Daughter, I become Alice. I love and care for my young daughter; she is the most cherished person in my life. My husband is a cruel, selfish brute who lashes out with his fists. Trying to keep my beloved daughter safe from him, I escape to run to the police station for help, when I am involved in a road accident. Hospitalised with injuries and with loss of memory, months later when I recover, my worst nightmare unfolds. My daughter, Daisy, is missing, so I set out to find her. But in the1930s, I am classed as “a bad mother” and no one will help me find her.

As a mother, how would cope if your daughter, your beloved child, goes missing?

Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday, is on the fourth Sunday of Lent, is a lovely tradition, which originated in the British Isles around the 1600s. Celebrated in churches, children picked wild flowers for their mothers to celebrate their love. The tradition faded, and it wasn’t until after WW2 that Mother’s Day, as we know it today, was revived. A giving of flowers and cards to our mother and to celebrate in church. The gift of love from mother to her children is precious and cherished when received with joy.

‘Well-paced … genuinely gripping’ Historical Novels Review

Jessica is grieving for her beloved father, trawler owner Jacob Kingdom, when a heated confrontation ends with her being cast out from the family home and the revelation of a shameful secret. She falls upon the kindness of strangers and meets a charismatic trawlerman, who is proud to walk out with Kingdom’s daughter.

But with her cold-hearted brother at the helm of the family business, there is discontent rising, and being Kingdom’s daughter begins to lose its charm. With Jessica desperate to prove herself worthy to the tight-knit community, does she have what it takes to weather the storm to come, or will her secret hold her back?

#BookSale “The Son” by Philipp Meyer

Soon to be a TV Series on AMC starring Pierce Brosnan and co-written by Philipp Meyer.

Now in paperback, the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling epic, a saga of land, blood, and power that follows the rise of one unforgettable Texas family from the Comanche raids of the 1800s to the oil booms of the 20th century.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries.

Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive. Despite their torture and cruelty, Eli–against all odds–adapts to life with the Comanche, learning their ways, their language, taking on a new name, finding a place as the adopted son of the chief of the band, and fighting their wars against not only other Indians, but white men, too-complicating his sense of loyalty, his promised vengeance, and his very understanding of self. But when disease, starvation, and westward expansion finally decimate the Comanche, Eli is left alone in a world in which he belongs nowhere, neither white nor Indian, civilized or fully wild.

Deftly interweaving Eli’s story with those of his son, Peter, and his great-granddaughter, JA, The Son deftly explores the legacy of Eli’s ruthlessness, his drive to power, and his life-long status as an outsider, even as the McCullough family rises to become one of the richest in Texas, a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege.

Harrowing, panoramic, and deeply evocative, The Son is a fully realized masterwork in the greatest tradition of the American canon-an unforgettable novel that combines the narrative prowess of Larry McMurtry with the knife edge sharpness of Cormac McCarthy.

Dare You: Part One Billie and Sawyer (Unchained Attraction Duets Series)

What would you do if a stranger deliberately kissed you?

What if that stranger was younger, hotter than hell and your husband had already traded you in for a much younger model?

Now what if his smoking hot kiss served as the ultimate payback for you being wronged… would you welcome it then?

Seeking sanctuary from a rainstorm inside a wine bar alone Billie Collier’s haven quickly became her hell when of all the places in New York City her soon-to-be ex-husband was also already in there, with his tall pretty homewrecker.

When another rain-soaked refugee swept inside dressed in a high dollar suit he does so with fear in his eyes. Drenched, Sawyer Wild breathed raggedly as he shrugged himself out of his jacket and quickly planted himself in the last empty chair in the wine bar—the one directly across from Billie.

Forced together by circumstance she seeks solace in Sawyer’s flirty banter which strokes her neglected ego, and as time passes and wine loosens her tongue she confesses Logan’s presence and her current humiliation.

Although relative strangers, he quickly relates to Billie’s desperate need to save face and with her curious husband approaching can Billie find her courage to trust and dare Sawyer when he offers her a chance to get even.

DARE You K.L. Shandwick ©2019 Excerpt:

From the corner of my eye I saw Logan and cringed. The jolt of shock I felt had been of quite a different kind to the ones that Sawyer had stirred within me. Looking over Sawyer’s shoulder I watched as Logan spoke to the redhead I instinctively knew was my homewrecker.

As if it were gearing up for attack, my body immediately locked up as I braced myself and felt pressure on my mouth as my lips automatically pinched tightly together. Blood roared in my ears as my heart rate spiked when he turned and headed directly toward us.

Without turning around, Sawyer leaned over and slipped his hand into mine. I stared down at it, still in shock and he gave it a small squeeze. “I take it the man of the moment is behind us?” he muttered intuitively in a barely-there voice.

Turning my focus on Sawyer, I remained practically frozen and nodded slightly, too choked up from a sudden collective of warring emotions rising within from my chest to my throat.

Previously, I’d only seen a picture of Poppy. It had been tucked into Colby’s beach bag after a trip to Nantucket with them, shortly after his eighth birthday.

This woman’s face wasn’t all that, but she was ten years younger and had a body I could only dream of. My petite, boyish frame was nothing like the taller, curvy, buxom redhead I’d seen clinging possessively onto my cheating husband’s arm a moment before.

Staring confused by my thoughts into Sawyer’s eyes my feelings had fleetingly stretched from absurd to sublime. What the hell am I doing?

The girl Logan had chosen over me was everything I wasn’t. In fact, she was more suited to the young, gorgeous man staring intently back at me than she was to Logan.

“Trust me?” Sawyer questioned in a whisper, his serious hazel eyed gaze intense. I had little trust in any man, but without waiting for my answer he leaned further across the table and intimately swept my long damp hair behind my ear.

A small thrill shot down my back in stark contrast to the nerves crippling me as Logan moved closer. Sawyer undaunted by his approach swept the rest of my hair behind my shoulder with the back of his hand, exposing my neck.

Another quick burst of adrenaline unexpectedly erupted within me and instantly ignited feelings of desire I hadn’t realized I had missed until that very moment.

Fighting to ignore how my body was reacting, I convinced myself Sawyer was a brilliant actor. He genuinely looked as if he had wanted me and the tender unhurried way he had touched me had made me feel desired.

My heart had felt as if it were about to explode in reaction because, acting or not, it had been a very long time since any man had looked at me the way Sawyer did. When I wanted to lean into his hand for a more tangible connection I’d felt ridiculous, considering the circumstances, but I had still wanted to do it all the same.

With a soft smile like he got a kick out of making a show of us, his gaze rolled leisurely up my neck, traced across from my ear to my lips and his tongue immediately licked his own. I felt his weighted gaze crush in my chest until I could barely breathe and it dawned on me Sawyer’s brazen intent was to actually kiss me.

Scanning the rowdy audience, Rahab stumbles upon Jeremy’s face, grimaced with resentment. It is obvious that he’s angry. Her heart races.
What have I done?
“Baby girl, never loves a man dat tinks he’s better den you, and never loves a man dat can’t love you lak he loves himself. Ain’t nothin’ worse den dat type of ownership.” Her Big Mama’s pearls of wisdom cultivate her mind. She can feel Lotti’s presence ushering her to leave.
“Dat one’s too smooth to hold on to, and he’s too fine to waste any’mo of ya time.”
Rahab freezes. Her eyes frantically dot the room. I’m bugging. She can hear Big Mama’s voice clearly over the sound of howling men.
“…and why is ya boobies hanging out lak dis, chile?” A cold breeze runs across Rahab’s chest.
The spotlight dims into darkness as Rahab rushes off the stage feeling she’s become the accusation of harlot bestowed upon her. She’s never done anything this pornographic before. The tears burning her eyes compel her to cry.

An ambitious heir will do whatever it takes to be the next CEO, even play fake fiancé to his childhood nemesis.

“That’s the deal, Abbott. Take it…or leave it.”

How far will an ambitious heir go to secure his future?

Parker Abbott will do whatever it takes to be the next CEO of King’s Finest Distillery, even play fake fiancé to his childhood nemesis, Kayleigh Jemison. Yet as he and the fiery redhead get reacquainted, sparks fly and real passion emerges. But when her ex wants a second chance, who will Kayleigh choose?

Teaser Tuesday

Kayleigh Jemison folded her arms as she stared through the window of her small handmade-jewelry- and-consignment shop.

What the hell was he doing there? It wasn’t Christmas and his mother’s and sister’s birthdays weren’t imminent. And the uptight, Wall-Street-wannabe certainly wasn’t the kind of man who’d wear her hand-tooled jewelry. So why was he here? And why on earth was he staring at her like she was a museum exhibit?

Kayleigh involuntarily dragged her fingers through her wild red curls, trying to create some semblance of order.

It was a slow weekday, so she’d been in the back, stamping and hammering metal pieces to be shipped to customers across the country. She wore a faded old T-shirt and a tattered pair of jeans stained with leather dye. A black bandana pulled her hair back.

In short she looked a hot damn mess.

Of all the days for him to show up at her shop… Kayleigh sighed, giving up any hope of redeeming her look.

What did it matter anyway?

As far as Parker was concerned, she was beneath the mighty Abbotts. They were the family with the keys to the kingdom in their growing small town of Magnolia Lake, Tennessee, a gem situated in the foothills of the picturesque Smoky Mountains.

The Abbotts, owners of King’s Finest Distillery, the largest local employer, were well-known and beloved by everyone in town.

Except her.

The little bell over the entrance tinkled when Parker yanked open the door, holding it for the customer who was leaving. The woman was juggling her purse, her bags and an unruly toddler.

So he does have manners. He just uses them selectively.

“Parker Abbott, what brings you into my shop today?” Kayleigh stood straight as a rod and tried to relax her involuntary scowl.

She’d returned to Magnolia Lake to start a business after going to college in Nashville and then living in Atlanta. Waging an outright war with the Abbotts would be detrimental to her interests. Besides, despite her disdain for Parker and his father, his mother and sister were nice enough. They’d been long-time customers and had referred lots of other clients. They’d even invited her to sell a few of her higher-end pieces on consignment at the distillery gift shop.

It was a lucrative partnership. So despite her utter disdain for the man who’d once been her closest friend, but betrayed her without the slightest hint of an apology, she would play nice.

For now.

“I wondered if you planned on coming in or if you were auditioning to be a living statue.”

Okay, maybe not exactly nice, but close enough.

He glared at her with his typical Parker Abbott glare, but then he did something beyond strange.

He actually smiled.

Or at least he was attempting to smile. He looked like Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

She kept that observation to herself, but she couldn’t help the smirk that spread across her face.

“Good afternoon, Kayleigh,” Parker said in a tone that was unnaturally cheerful for him. “I was hoping I could have a few minutes of your time, if you’re not too busy.”

Kayleigh scanned the empty store, but bit back a flippant response. “Sure. What can I do for you, Abbott?”

Parker relaxed and his smile looked a little more natural. “Actually, I’d like to do something for you.”
