New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors Heidi McLaughlin and L.P. Dover come together for a sexy new series that delivers romance for every season!

Dripping baste. Popped timers. Deliciously moist drumsticks…

Knowing her hometown goes ridiculously overboard for Thanksgiving was one of the many things Maeve Cameron hadn’t missed about it. Yet as she’s forced back home after a nasty divorce, her meddling mother lands her smack dab in the middle of the Turkey Day festivities.

Positioned in the paramedic tent, she’s prepared for a day of dehydrated Turkey Trotters, when Kyler, her high school crush, hobbles back into her life. Knowing he was the kind of guy who would baste any bird he could find, Maeve works to treat his injury before he gets any thoughts of candying her yams.

It’s been a long time since Kyler was a one-plate and done kind of guy. Now, he’s ready to commit himself to the indulgences of the perfect buffet spread. Can he convince Maeve that their attraction is one to be thankful for? Or will his past reputation be a recipe for disaster?

Loosen your belt and prep the pie, it’s time for some stuffing!

#GuestPost ‘One Simple Trick for Writing’ by Jessica Jiji, author of “How to Judge a Book by Its Lover”

There is no ideal environment for writing, but there is one simple trick.

You can travel to a mountain retreat for a private room splashed in sunshine, the perfectly clean desk holding your fully charged laptop – and still have no idea where to begin.

Or if you prefer the invisible bustle of intellectual energy, you can get the best carrel at the library or most choice spot at the café, steeped in an atmosphere of collective thought – and still feel completely stuck.

That’s when you reach for the easy hack: be grateful for that struggle, not in some new-age sense where you thank the universe for what is actually driving you crazy, but with a very practical approach where you mine your trouble for material.

primroseFelicia Denise hints at this concept in her novel Free when a son relates the characteristics of perennials to his mother’s strength.

“Perennials are sturdy and thrive in adverse conditions,” he says. “Some flower bulbs need to be dug up and stored during winter. But perennials’ roots run deep. They grab hold of the earth and pull nutrients from it. They learn to get by with less and sustain themselves. As the weather warms up, perennials wake up and let their buds grow until their blossoms burst forth in the warmth of the sun. Perennials are some of the most beautiful flowers you’ll ever see.”

This resonated deeply with me, recalling a passage written by my Buddhist mentor, Daisaku Ikeda, whose profound writings I encountered when I took faith in Buddhism at the age of 17:

“Flowers appeal to us because they bloom only after a long, persevering peonystruggle. Beautiful colors and sweet perfume are the crystallization of the wisdom of flowering plants to survive. They attract insects that spread pollen and seeds, thereby contributing to their proliferation. Flowers are tough, sometimes even tougher than people; they are contenders who fight to win. They teach us this lesson: to live is to fight.”

A contemporary author and a Buddhist philosopher reflecting on the power of flowers to endure and encourage both seem to see the very struggle of these blossoms to survive as the source of their beauty.

For me, anyway, struggle drives the drama that inspires art.

Maybe this is on my mind because I listened to a lecture by a screenwriting expert last week who opened with that basic question: what does every story have?

It is an answer we all know: conflict.

No one wants to read a novel where, metaphorically, the paint just dries, even if that’s in a stunning mansion.

As a writer, you can be glad for all the crazy experiences in life because instead of being mere problems they suddenly become material. As a reader, you can relate to the conflict when the pages come alive in your imagination.

My latest novel, How to Judge a Book by its Lover, centers on a character who has some rough family relationships, a turns-out-to-be toxic friend, plenty of romantic struggles and a ton more rejection. Fiction? Sure, but inspired by fact. Writing it helped me to shift perspective on all those elements from my own life. Hopefully, the novel will give others who aren’t sitting in their pretty mansions watching the paint dry a chance to laugh at what’s familiar and love the way it can turn out.

A big dream, wrapped in a comedy, inside an unexpected romance….

Lucien Brosseau: those blue eyes, that thick hair, his messy shirts – Laurel Linden dreams of the chance to kiss a guy as sophisticated as he’s sexy. But while Lucien is a Belgian art critic raised in Nicaragua, Laurel barely escaped the suburbs of Long Island with dreams of publishing her hilariously messy, 600-page historical novel about Napoleon Bonaparte’s hairdresser. At least she loves her day job walking adorable puppies, and when she finds Vanessa – a wise mentor – they’re off on a wild ride through New York City’s hottest clubs and coolest boutiques. Along the way, Laurel’s dreams start to come true but she’s shocked by just how. That’s when she gets an even bigger prize: the one truth that always brings happiness in life, but only if you earn it.

Meet Jessica!

Jessica JijiI. Love. Readers! You are part of an awesome tribe. And I am one of you. My mother always told me we could travel far with books. Long before there were virtual tours and Google Earth, she introduced me to books that transported me across seas and centuries. One of my favorites is “The Alexandria Quartet,” a set of four linked novels set in Egypt. If you haven’t read them, that’s at least one recommendation I can offer by way of thanks for visiting this website.

Like parents everywhere, my father used to tell me bedtime stories. Being Iraqi, he made up tales about a brave girl named Cassima. Instead of starting with “Once Upon a Time…” he would open with the line, “I was a cook for the Queen of Iraq…” The cook was never much good at fighting off bandits or protecting the palace but Cassima would swoop in and save the day. I was mesmerized.

Somewhere between being raised on the power of reading and those imaginative tales, I started writing. As a die-hard fan of rom-coms, I try to capture the heartache and the happiness, the meaning and the madness of life. Sometimes, I cross continents and decades to write about the Arabic culture I was raised to revere. Other times, I stick with here and now, where contemporary love meets timeless desire. Either way, it’s a journey we’re on together.

To readers everywhere, I offer my gratitude, solidarity and allegiance. You rock.

Synopsis

Sophia Mason’s junior year of college isn’t exactly off to the best start. The semester has just begun, and the president of her sorority has already ousted her from the house. With nowhere else to turn, she ends up at her brother’s apartment—only to find it inhabited instead by a handsome stranger.

On paper, Drew Nolan doesn’t have much going for him as an uneducated bartender from a sketchy family. But when a spoiled rich kid asks Drew to take over his life so he can travel around Europe instead of attend classes, Drew sees the opportunity to get the college education he’s always dreamed of.

Forced into a cover-up under the same roof, Sophia and Drew forge an unlikely friendship. As the two grow closer, lines blur and boundaries stretch, and they find comfort in living the lie they’ve adopted. But reality comes knocking all too soon, and Sophia and Drew will have to weigh what’s worth fighting for and what should never ever have been.

Meet the Author

Elizabeth Hayley is actually “Elizabeth” and “Hayley,” two friends who love reading romance novels to obsessive levels. This mutual love prompted them to put their English degrees to good use by penning their own. They learned a ton about each other through the process, like how they clearly share a brain and have a persistent need to text each other constantly. They live with their husbands and kids in a Philadelphia suburb. Thankfully, their children are still too young to read.

BLURB

Welcome to Dayton Valley, cowboy country with a sum population of 9022. Sounds idyllic, and it is… until it isn’t.

Ellie First there’s my parents and their penchant for making out in public, totally gross. Then there’s my douche of a brother, who shouldn’t be allowed near any woman with a pulse. Bronte my best friend is lusting over a silver fox … And then of course there’s Hunter Delaney. Hunter. Hunter. Hunter. He’s not officially mine, but that’s not to say I want him to belong to anyone else either. As we work together on a way to stop Bronte’s demented plan to date Hunter’s dad, we get closer, and closer… until the lines of friendship are well and truly blurred. Friends can be lovers, right?

Hunter I’m a cowboy, I love my job, I adore my two crazy aunts and I idolize my pop, even if he’s getting more action than I am. Life is great, except I have a problem and it’s called Ellie Maples. She’s my best friend’s little sister, but you know that line you’re not supposed to cross…? Yeah, that one. Well, I’m getting pretty close to jumping it. You can have feelings for the girl you’re not supposed to touch, right?

Welcome to Dayton Valley… where the men are hard, and the women are horny.

Humorous Fiction, Romantic Comedy

Date Published: September 15, 2020

Publisher: Hurn Publications

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Forty-eight-year-old Corbett Thomas, a one-hit wonder of the 90s, now works as the lead sommelier at Napa Valley’s hippest restaurant. Set to become one of the few Master Sommeliers in the world, Corbett self-destructs during his final exam, ruining his last chance at capturing the stardom and adoration he got a taste for in his youth.

When billionaire game designer, Brogan Prescott, asks Corbett to consult on a major vineyard acquisition, Corbett sees it as a shot at redemption, until he learns of Brogan’s ridiculous vision of a virtual-reality, Woke Ant Colony Winery. Disgusted, Corbett decides to buy the vineyard himself and preserve its magic and history. Cashless, clueless, and with his reputation in tatters, Corbett enlists the help of his bass-player-turned-lawyer Seamus O’Flaherty, who may have finally lost his stomach for Corbett’s bad ideas; his uber-rational daughter Remy, who wants Corbett to uncork some family secrets he’d rather leave in the cellar; and Sydney Cameron, whose sudden appearance in Corbett’s life may repair his heart or shatter it forever.

With their help-and sometimes despite it-Corbett discovers what Brogan has known all along: a four-billion-dollar gold deposit lies beneath the vineyard. If Brogan acquires the property, the ensuing gold rush will destroy Napa Valley.

But if Corbett can get out of his own way long enough to purchase the vineyard first, he’ll be faced with the hardest decision of his life: take the fame and fortune he desperately craves, or save the soul of the valley he loves so much.

Excerpt

Let’s get one thing clear – I won that bet fair and square, even though I cheated.

I blame the whole thing on Rick Dornin, who was being particularly douchey that night. I used to be able to choose whichever party I wanted to serve without question. That is, until Dornin arrived at Appellation with his anal-retentive online calendar and industrial-grade Napoleon complex.

Yes, that Appellation. The most coveted dining experience in all of Napa Valley, and one of only nine restaurants in America awarded three Michelin stars. It took a DNA sample and a copy of your credit report to get a table, and then you’d better be ready to cash in your 401(k) when the bill came.

The evening started out normally enough. I arrived at the restaurant an hour before my shift to check reservations, talk to Chef Dan about the evening’s specials, and think of pairings for the prix fixe. Dornin was in his office—a modified broom closet next to the staff bathroom that looked like a hoarder’s den with one, tiny deer trail leading to his desk. In fact, he was always in his office, even when service was slammed, which drove me batshit crazy. I don’t care if you’re General Manager or General Patton—when it’s time to schlep a plate or buff a glass, you step up and do it.

Anyway, I poked my head through the doorway and said, “Hey, Rick,” trying to keep things light and cheery. “What do you know about this Harrison party at eight?”

“Whales,” he replied, not bothering to look up from his purchase orders. “Big whales, like Moby Dick whales.”

“Sweet!” Visions of stockbrokers trying to one-up each other with bottles of Screaming Eagle at five thousand bucks a pop danced in my head. Tips so big they come in a brown paper bag.

“Yes.” Dornin finally looked up at me and grinned like he learned how to do it from an infomercial. “They’ll be in the Veraison Room. With Andrew.”

“What?” I lunged into the tiny office, nearly tripping over a carton of water glasses. “You can’t give it to Andrew!”

“I can give it to whoever I want.” He went back to his purchase orders, feigning a nonchalance that made me want to smack him. “If I want to move Felipe off of bussing and let him pop some corks, I could do that, too.”

Time for a different tack—one that wouldn’t involve me going full-on Hannibal Lecter. “I’m just saying that a party like that comes to a restaurant like this to experience the highest level of service in the world. I’m the guy they’re coming for, not Andrew. I sit for my Master Somm next week, and—”

“You know what you are, Corbett? You’re an overpaid bartender.” Dornin had thin lips and an Adam’s apple the size of Detroit, and it bugged me. “You trained for twenty years to learn how to pull a cork from a bottle and tell people that red wine goes with steak. Whoop-tee-freaking-do. You’ll work the floor tonight, and you can have the Jansen party on the terrace at seven-thirty.”

My left eyebrow started twitching, which happens when I get stressed out. Apparently, no one can see it, but to me, it feels like a two-year-old is digging tiny fingers into my face and stretching it like saltwater taffy. I considered trying the No One Has Experience At Up-Selling Like I Do approach, but this was the third time in as many weeks I’d had such a run-in with Dornin.

I was done.

It was time to talk to Chef Dan.

Most people remember Chef Daniel Foyer from his five seasons on Elite Chef, The Food Channel’s number one show from 1998 to 2002. With a chin so chiseled it could slice a burnt chuck steak and blue eyes that screamed, “Come taste this gazpacho in my bedroom,” he was the prototype celebrity chef. But Father Time had been most inhospitable to Chef Dan, and for the past couple of years the poor soul tried to counteract a rapid aging process by dunking his scalp and Sam Elliott-sized mustache in a fifty-gallon drum of jet-black hair dye. The net effect was so incongruous with the rest of his wrinkled face that I could barely look at him without drowning in the shore break of cognitive dissonance.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the guy. He was a loyal and trusted friend, and straight-up the most amazing culinary artist of my generation. But if I’d had any money, I would have bought stock in Just For Men and eventually retire on my Chef Dan profits alone.

About the Author

John Taylor has been writing about wine since 2012, but his meanderings on life began way before that. Born and raised in San Diego, California, John moved to Los Angeles in 1982 to pursue dreams of screenwriting and filmmaking. He attended the University of Southern California, where he majored in Shattered Dreams and False Hopes, with a minor in Getting Gut Punched By Reality. After being handed a degree in Journalism in 1987 as a consolation prize, John dove into a career in music. Because getting gut-punched just isn’t painful enough.

By 1996, John and his band, The Uninvited, had produced four independent albums and became one of the most popular acts in the western United States. This lead to a deal on Atlantic Records, which released the band’s self-titled debut album in 1997. The band had two Top 100 hits, and toured nationally with Dave Matthews, Blues Traveller, Third Eye Blind and many other acts. Their music appeared in the TV shows Beverly Hills 90210 and Party of Five, and in the motion pictures The Commandments and North Beach. The band can also be heard in several HBO Documentaries, video games and on that annoying “One Hit Wonders of The 90’s” station your co-worker always plays on Spotify.

In 2001, John’s vast experience in shattered dreams was once again called into play as the band hung up their touring shoes for good. After a brief but horrifying career in real estate, John got wise and made a career out of his favorite hobby – wine – and has held various sales & marketing positions in Napa Valley since 2011. John’s writing career started in earnest at this point, with blogs, essays and short stories appearing in various publications. John is the author of three novels, including the aptly-titled Pairs With: Life, which will be released by Hurn Publications in September 2020.

At the cook off, everyone wanted a taste, and the consequences, started with flowers, then cards and unwanted advances rolling in. The drop-dead sexy Councilman, Shawn Kingsley was one of the judges at the cookout and he’s one of her suitors. Dae isn’t to upset about that at all.

But when her nemesis Jane Moore, whose food reflected her personality… nasty, accuses her of cheating for one and stealing the man of her dream in the councilman, Dae was over it all and was ready to give everyone that damn antidote. But what if all of Shawn’s sweet kisses and caresses were all because of a spell and not because of her? Dae needed to see the truth even if it meant the heart between them would fizzle. She only hoped the cookbook had a recipe for curing a broken heart.

EXCERPT

“Nothing at all,” Grannie Fran’s voice raised an octave. “Tell me darling, how much of my cinnamon did you use?”

         “Why?” Dae questioned

Grannie Fran set a teabag in her cup and got out the pure cane sugar jug. “Just curious.”

         “I used the recommended amount…”

         “Oh good,” Grannie Fran sighed.

“It tasted wonderfully, and I added three more dashes,” Dae finished.

Grannie Fran squeaked and dropped her spoon. “What!”

“Yeah I loved how the cinnamon evened out the curry and the spices with bite,” Dae explained. “It worked everyone loved it.”

“I’m sure they did,” Grannie Fran said weakly. “Oh boy, oh boy, I need to sit down.”

“Do I need to call Dr. Ridgemont?” Dae rushed around the counter and got Grannie to the breakfast nook seat that looked out to the back garden and ocean. She went back and finished her grandmother’s tea before bringing it to the table.

“No, no dear,” Grannie Fran took the tea. “Sir down dear we need to talk.”

“About?” Dae asked warily. “The conversation had taken a turn, to where she was unsure.

“Oh Dae, always follow the recipe,” Grannie Fran bemoaned. ‘I should have had this talk with you sooner, like my mother did with me. But your parents passed, and I was so focused on being both mother and father to you.”

Dae’s heart beat faster. “Okay you are scaring me.”

“Dae, that cookbook is charmed, and that cinnamon is one of my secret love spells,” Grannie Fran said. “I’m a caster, a green witch so to speak, I used herbs and plants, well earth elements for healing and other things.”

Dae stared at her grandmother and then started laughing. It bubbled out of her until she was weeping and wiping the tears of mirth away. Grannie Fran watched her calmly and sipped her tea while Dae tried to stifle her giggles.

“Grannie Fran, you are so strange sometimes,” Dae sighed.

“Dae have you ever read the back of the cookbook?” Gran asked calmly.

“I’ve never really gone through the whole thing, just a few recipes,” She answered.

“Well you really should today, this cookbook came from my great great grandmother,” Grannie Fran explained. ‘That’s why it’s so old, passed down from mother to daughter and now to you. In those days when the slave shacks and plantation houses was our home, there was very little food and the women had to make sure the families was fed. The back of that book is the oldest recipes, and us Renette women had the gifts.”

Grannie Fran took a sip and set her cup gently on the table before meeting Dae’s eyes. “Within us was the power to make that dry soil they gave us to toil for our own families fertile. We made the foods taste so damn good we didn’t have to face the whips. Those of us who could use that magic to be in the owner’s ears and make life easier for all of us who weren’t free men and women. Not everyone could run, so we had to make sure we survived. The old magic was the best way.”

“You are trying to make me believe that your recipes are magical?” Dae asked skeptically. How could she believe this? But Grannie Fran looked dead serious.

“Not the recipes themselves but some of the ingredients,” her grandmother explained. “Like the cinnamon, that’s my own creation for love.”

“And you think that’s why all these guys are chasing me down now,” Dae assumed. Because of Frangelica’s cinnamon.”

Gran sighed and touched her fingers to the soil of the succulent that sat in the middle of the breakfast nook table. As she whispered words that Dae could barely hear, she watched in amazement as the succulent began to bloom.

“Holy shit,” Dae looked from Gran to the plant. “You have magic fingers.”

“While some of my lovers may agree with you,” she laughed. “I am just a conduit, the words, the intent is the power and its within you too.”

“Oh my god, if they are all coming after my honey pot because of that recipe how the hell do I fix it?” Dae got up and started pacing. “And Sean asked me out after eating the braised beef. Grannie Fran that means he really doesn’t want to date me is your damn juju.”

“Oh, I doubt that very much,” she said mildly still sipping her tea. “Sean Kingsley has always had a thing for you since high school. Heard how he used to sniff around you.”

“Gran, I have been back here for four years and he has not made a move in my direction until that cook off,” Dae pointed out. “How can I trust anything about this at all except to think it’s the recipe. And how do we get these guys to go back to normal?”

“Usually I would say it would wear off, but you double dosed the recipe, my love,” Grannie Fran said.

“Ummm,” Dae raised a tentative hand. “I kinda did it three times and just dashed it in there.”

“Dae that is not how you cook!” His grandmother exclaimed.

Dae pointed at her and shook a long finger. “You taught me to cook with heart and you said, trust your instinct when it comes to spices. Let the ancestors whisper to you, is what I was told.”

“I’m sure that the Renette women that have gone by did not say overdose the men in town with charmed cinnamon,” her grandmother stood up. “I’m going to have to create an antidote.”

“How long will that take?” Dae asked.

“About two weeks I can’t harvest the herbs I need until a waning moon so it can take away the effects,” she replied.

“A waning moon?” Dae questioned.

“After the full moon, and its going to the end of its cycle,” Grannie Fran stood and put the cup in the sink. “I’ll go up right now and sort out a recipe for the antidote.”

“How am I supposed to avoid these people for fourteen days?” Dae demanded to know.

Grannie Fran smiled. ‘With finesse my darling.”
