4/5 Stars!

Regrouping mentally and emotionally after getting dumped by her cheating fiancé, crime writer August Saunders has a decision to make. Stay in the safe cozy hamlet of her childhood or return to fast-paced London.

Prodded by her pushy but loving sister, August joins The Hub, a new local work co-op. The affable author falls into instant “like” with her space-mates, and its friendly, but mysterious leader, Max Ronson, gets her problem-solving mind whirring.

Told in a fun, laid-back style, August’s story unfolds with love, laughter, and understanding, especially with serious timely issues.

This read has all the ingredients—strong leads, wacky, fun supporting characters, pets, turkeys, and witty, laugh-out-loud banter—for an enjoyable evening or beach-side read.

Did I mention turkeys?

Enjoy!

ONE TURKEY FARM, FIVE WILD COLLEAGUES AND A BARN FULL OF MYSTERY

When jilted crime writer August Saunders returns from London to her roots in rural Wiltshire, she feels lost and lacking in inspiration. Determined to reignite her writing mojo, she responds to an advert for a shared workspace in a converted barn.

At the Hub, with its ill-equipped gym, inedible catering and motley array of fellow users, including a matchmaker more interested in her own conquests and a TikToker with a dodgy nocturnal sideline, August is confronted with a real-life mystery to solve.

Why is Max Ronson, the handsome but volatile owner of the Hub, so evasive about his past? And who or what is he hiding on the premises? She is determined to find out – but will her curiosity snuff out the spark of romance?

Nicola May mixes mischief with mystery in a fast-paced rural romp which will make Futtingbrook Farm as beloved a location as Ferry Lane Market or Cockleberry Bay.

Perfect for fans of Beth O’Leary, Sarah Morgan, Jill Mansell and Cathy Bramley.

With most of her besties (The Sweet Water Circle) in good relationship standing, The Circle spins to Shelly with a long-overdue intervention. It’s time for her to find her forever man. Or at least a guy without a foot fetish who doesn’t text pictures of himself in his tighty whities.

Tilly’s got her invite, now this single mum needs a plus one.

But she’s far too busy parenting her little girl, stopping her mum from over injecting her face with filler, and playing happy families with her pompous coffee-fuelled ex. Oh yeah, and there’s the new guy at work who is gunning for her job. So Tilly really doesn’t have time for any of the grief that relationships can bring. She just wants the fun, not the red flags. And it just so happens that a nice-looking man has recently caught her eye. He’ll do… for now… just perfect.

Except he’s a little elusive. After a wild hen do including a very ropey boat trip, a gobby gate crasher and a dodgy male stripper, a series of dating disasters leaves Tilly feeling disheartened. When that familiar gorgeous face pops up on the dating website, she thinks all of her Christmases have come at once.  Could he be the plus one?

Tilly’s too nice and she really needs to set some boundaries if she wants to be happy. Is there such a thing as the perfect plus one? Will her mother’s obsession with tweakments ever stop? Can Tilly compete with the sexy but infuriating new guy at work?

Paige wants two things: to land a full time librarian job and find the man of her dreams. On the cusp of thirty, she finds herself suddenly single and working part-time in a Michigan library. A handsome patron with a delicious accent appears at the reference desk, inadvertently sparking an idea that might help her land the promotion she so desperately needs. But that’s not the only thing he sparks.

James is in town from Glasgow, Scotland, on a summer artist residency. Luckily, the trip got him away from the pressure he feels to take over his uncle’s river tour business. He only wanted to clear his head and make his art in peace, but he wasn’t counting on finding an attractive librarian to fill his days.

With only eight weeks before James goes home to Scotland, Paige knows she should protect her heart. After all, she already wasted years with her commitment-phobe ex. But the more she gets to know James, the less she can stick to her plan to just be friends. Is she just wasting her time again, or can they bridge the ocean between them to find a happily ever after of their own?

EXCERPT

In this excerpt, main character, Paige, has just met love interest, James and is telling her BFF, Kayla about it. (Norm, who Kayla mentions, is an annoying and overly-friendly library patron that Paige has to deal with regularly.)

By the time she got into her apartment, she felt like she was soaring through the stars with all the force and energy of a rocket ship. No trace of closing shift exhaustion. She could stay awake all night if she had to. Maybe she would.

She popped a frozen dinner in the microwave and called Kayla. It was after nine o’clock but she couldn’t go to bed without telling her best friend about this.

“Hey,” Kayla answered. “How was work today?”

Paige felt her excitement bursting against her ribcage. She couldn’t contain it any longer.

“I met someone!” she squealed.

“Wait. What?” There was a shuffling sound as though Kayla had dropped something or was moving in to hear better.
Paige realized she may have been a tad overenthusiastic and misleading. “Well, I didn’t meet someone, meet someone, but this gorgeous Scottish guy came into the library today and he was chatty and so dreamy.”
“Tell me every single detail.”

Paige grinned and the whole story tumbled out. The accent, the blue eyes, the sleeve tattoo, all of it.

“That’s awesome! He sounds gorgeous. And that definitely sounds promising.” Kayla sounded impressed and happy for her friend.

“It would—” Paige paused a moment, coming back down to earth. “But it’s not meant to be.”
“What the heck are you talking about? He saved you from Norm. He’s coming to your book discussion. He sounds like living sex appeal. Don’t go sabotaging yourself already!”
Paige sighed. “It’s not me. It’s life. Don’t forget the part where he actually lives in Scotland. That’s a heck of a long distance commute for anyone. And he’s only here for eight weeks anyway. To be honest, I don’t even know if he’s at the beginning of those weeks or somewhere in the middle.”
“Paige, stop.” Kayla was already developing a mom voice and she didn’t even have the kid yet. “It sounds like he was interested. I guess you’ll have a better idea when he comes to the book discussion.”

“If,” Paige corrected her, discouragement taking a firmer hold of her. “Just because he seemed into it tonight doesn’t mean he’ll actually show.”

“You said he was sitting in the chair reading the book. That’s a pretty substantial clue as far as I’m concerned.”

#BookReview “A Wish For Jo (Cranley Wishes Book 2)” by Audrey Davis

book cover

~~~
5/5 Stars!
In book two of Cranley Wishes, we get Jo Milligan’s story. A supporting character in A Wish for Jinnie, the A Bit of Crumpet owner loves running her café but is yearning for more excitement in her life.
Does the answer to Jo’s dreams arrive in the form of her new assistant, Aaliyah? Maybe yes, maybe no. The outspoken young woman is also… wait for it… a genie, and will grant Jo three wishes.  Seems simple enough, but these two cannot seem to agree on anything. So, it remains to be seen if Jo can get the life she yearns for, if Aaliyah can stop being the Queen of Chaos, and if Jo’s future includes Cranley’s moody new resident.
A fun romcom, this read brings the laughter and the tears as author Audrey Davis pulls us even deeper into the Scottish village with realistic characters and friendships. Add a little magic and a lot of heart and everyone’s kept on their toes. Especially Jo.
The pragmatic Jo and brusque Aaliyah balance the story nicely. Aaliyah’s unconventional viewpoints could be off-putting… and rude in some circles, but I loved her character and her challenging attitude.
Davis’ strong writing and talent for delivering the “feels” make A Wish for Jo a winner!
(Book one, A Wish for Jinnie, should be read first!)
Enjoy!
~~~

The hilarious sequel to A Wish For Jinnie! Best read in order.

Jo Milligan’s café — A Bit of Crumpet — is her pride and joy.
But icing cakes and baking pastries in the sleepy Scottish village of Cranley isn’t hitting the sweet spot.

Jo longs for some excitement in her life. The arrival of gruff stranger Harvey Quinn doesn’t fill her with joy. Nor does the appearance of an unlikely assistant with an unexpected gift … and a serious attitude problem.

Genie Aaliyah grants Jo three wishes but coming up with ideas proves challenging.

As Jo grows closer to Cranley’s newest resident, secrets threaten to derail their relationship.

Can Jo find a way to cook up a happy ending, or do the ingredients add up to a recipe for disaster?
