#BookTour “The Abdication” by Justin Newland

Crime / Suspense / Thriller

Date Published: 06/07/2021

Publisher: Troubador Publishing Ltd

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

The town of Unity sits perched on the edge of a yawning ravine where, long ago, a charisma of angels provided spiritual succour to a fledgling human race. Then mankind was granted the gift of free will and had to find its own way, albeit with the guidance of the angels. The people’s first conscious act was to make an exodus from Unity – they built a rope bridge across the ravine and founded the town of Topeth. For a time, the union between the people of Topeth and the angels of Unity was one of mutual benefit. After that early spring advance, there had been a torrid decline in which mankind’s development resembled a crumpled, fading autumnal leaf.

Following the promptings of an inner voice, Tula, a young woman from the city, trudges into Topeth. Her quest is to abide with the angels and thereby discover the right and proper exercise of free will. To do that, she has to cross the bridge – and overcome her vertigo.

Topeth is in upheaval; the townsfolk blame the death of a child on dust from the nearby copper mines. The priests have convinced them that a horde of devils have thrown the angels out of Unity and now occupy the bridge, possessing anyone who trespasses on it. Then there’s the heinous Temple of Moloch!

The Abdication is the story of Tula’s endeavour to step upon the path of a destiny far greater than she could ever have imagined.

  1. The Acropolis

 Tula staggered away from the Temple of Moloch to escape the toxic atmosphere. The air was thin. Her body was sweating, her stomach, knotted. Once in a while, she paused to gather her breath. Her head swirled with conflicting views about the townsfolk. At one turn they were kind and hospitable, but then they seemed to flip into a collective madness, in which they were possessed and intoxicated by a deluded sadistic pleasure.

There were no devils, other than those believed and invested in by people’s hearts and minds. The devils had no power without the freely given will of the people. She did not think this was how the gift of free will was intended to be exercised.

Then there was the bridge, a bridge to the future, away from the past and into the bright lights of tomorrow. Was its true name Via Angelica or the Devils’ Bridge? After Jevros’s fall and the tragic death of his baby girl, she had entertained her doubts. And now Moloch – the terrifying monster.

She needed a quiet place to meditate. The sun was arcing in the sky and sending waves of heat onto the town. The sunlight glinted on the derelict temple columns on Acropolis Hill. On first arriving in Topeth, the old structure had intrigued her. It would be an ideal sanctuary, at least until the gruesome ceremony at the bronze temple had finished.

Occupying the highest point in the town, the old Acropolis had been abandoned to nature, a monumental relic to a past era. She found herself at the head of a causeway leading to the first of three tiered terraces or courts, each separated by a low boundary wall running around the hillside like a girdle. The Acropolis building itself, or what was left of it, stood bleak and proud on the uppermost peak.

On entering the outer court, she scrunched up her nose. The stench was coming from a mound of rubbish. Blotches of weed poked through the gaps in the pile of old rotting clothes, discarded sandals, broken bottles and more of those nearly new children’s toys. The tip had attracted vermin, who, on her arrival, scampered for cover into the tall, thin spindles of dry grass. Schooled both by the adversity of the heat and the rarity of the atmosphere in Topeth, the rats seemed as big as beavers and mountain-ready.

Rats she did not like, neither the four-legged variety nor the two-legged. She had encountered a few of both in her short time on Earth and bore a particular disgust for the latter. Both smelled; the four-legged were putrid and the two-legged, well, they were even worse, since they had free will and therefore had volunteered to act like the four-legged variety.

Then there was the compliance, the serial inability to think for oneself and to follow others as a matter of course. She did not like that either. Yet it was as infuriatingly difficult to spot as to eradicate. Her pet hate was the giving of a name by its parents to a child. Her parents had named her Tula. She had not asked for it, condoned it, or even agreed to it, yet the name had stuck. One day, she would give herself a new name, to mark the beginning of her life-long quest, with a name chosen by her that chimed with her perceived destiny. Now that sounded like the proper exercise of free will.

She was Tula; Tula was she. The name had echoes of the tulip, the flower. Did her cheeks bloom with their fiery reds? Did she smell as nice? Could she smell her own body odour or her own clothes? They mostly smelled of sweat and fear, but on the odd occasion that she found that quiet, listening space in herself, she smelled as sweet as the turban-topped tulip.

#Excerpt “Adam XY” by Zach Cassidy

~~~~
Fiction
Date Published: 4-25-2022
photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png
In a world where human males were thought to be a historical curiosity, the first man in centuries is born.
Adam Walsh III, a grandson of Adam, researches the life of his grandfather, the first human male to be born in two centuries. After the wars of the twenty-first century, men were wiped out from the population by a virus. Through the spermification process, women were able to procreate without males and soon, men were a thing of the past.
Until Adam that is. Science has never been able to explain his birth, but from the moment he came out of the womb, Adam found himself under constant scrutiny, equally hated and admired.
Males are now slowly repopulating the planet, but they remain rare and are the subjects of hate crimes and persistent accusations. Through his research, Adam Walsh III seeks to end the bloodshed.
~~~~

EXCERPT

INTRODUCTION

I am Adam Walsh the Third.

If not already evident, I am a grandson of Adam.

I am doing this as a way to educate myself primarily, about my grandfather, whose very existence should have been impossible. Few people have impacted the world (for better or worse) the way that my ancestor did, Jesus, Caesar, Genghis Khan, the Prophet Muhammad, and Karl Marx, for example. However, unlike others who have had such an impact, he did it by merely being born, by existing.

It is my intention to interview people close to him, research and otherwise find out about my grandfather’s life. Despite being a direct descendent, I don’t know much more than the average citizen about him. I seek to fix that for myself.

Additionally, it is important to me that the reader get a glimpse, an idea of the lives of modern men, and our particular struggles. Men face a lot in our world, just for being men; I hope to help you, the reader, understand the issues that we face.

Understand what we go through, just for what’s between our legs. As more and more men appear on the face of the earth, we face increased scrutiny.

I will include information gathered from individuals from my grandfather’s life, as well as telling you about the life of the modern man. What we men 1

go through. We live in a world that was not built for us, a world that for decades on decades lived without men. Before my grandfather, most people didn’t even think about men. They hadn’t existed in decades and the disappearance of men was merely a history lesson for most people. Men had become almost a modern legend. So for men to suddenly appear, it’s natural that we would be looked at suspiciously.

As I explore the life of my grandfather, and those around him in his and my hometown of Lexington, Kentucky, I will be interviewing them. However, I want my reader to have an idea of what it was like for those that knew Adam, that were affected by him.

There has been a recent resurgence of the hate and prejudice against men in society, due to our rapid increase since the death of my grandfather.

Now that selling sperm is no longer illegal, it’s way more common and so more than 50 percent of men are currently under 18 years old. I have several dozen biological children myself, about half of them boys.

As more of us appear, the hate originally shown my grandfather has increased as people’s initial fears, a world full of men, come to light. Violence is on the rise.

While I have never physically been attacked, I remember as a child having graffiti marked on my home once. As an adult, I have had death threats in public and received mail that ranges from merely mean to psychotic. Even some of my female relatives have issues with this as if being born the old-fashioned way somehow makes them inferior or a part of the problem.

Recently, my cousin Henry who was a leading activist for men was killed. He was fighting against his own and other’s exclusion from specific careers and from top schools and was shot in the back of the head. It’s been over the news a lot lately. My cousin was the best in our family, a certified genius, who worked as an engineer for local wind farms. He had a family and young daughters at home who will grow up without their father. I cannot fix human prejudice, but maybe I can spread understanding.

The hate that was shown my grandfather was more intense than anyone man faces today, primarily because it was all heaped upon ONE person. But it does serve as an example of the experience today.

I also want to be clear that there are SO many allies, most in society do not see me as an abomination, most are supportive or neutral. But there is a small but violent faction that wants us gone, either castrated or killed depending upon the individual. My hope in writing this is that those that are neutral will pick a side, your neutrality is hurting us. Because the truth is that we need you to help us. There is not enough use to protect ourselves on our own.

In addition to this, I want to know about my grandfather, and it is time I get a real job. I have become unsatisfied being a sperm donor and it might make holidays a bit less awkward with my father. My father is an excellent lawyer and leader in the male community, by comparison, I am a failure.

Dessa

I didn’t know where my sister had found the children, but little Junie and Judd were the sweetest kids. They weren’t hers. No matter what she implied, I knew she’d never been pregnant. Not to mention, she didn’t have a maternal bone in her body. Of course, I’d seen
plenty of parents who didn’t have what it took to take care of children. Which was why I’d ended up in foster care, along with Sonja.

It bothered me, not knowing where the children came from. Did they have parents searching for them? Had Sonja stolen them to try and give them a better life? I had too many questions, and she never offered any answers. Not that I’d seen her lately. She usually stopped by every other week with some cash and would buy groceries. Until the day she’d walked out and not returned. Had she grown bored with the kids? It wouldn’t have
surprised me.

I rolled my chair forward and scooped Junie onto my lap. She giggled and clapped her hands, always enjoying a ride. To her, it was a game. For me… Well, it was a reminder of the life I’d never get to have. Jeremy had made it clear no one would want a woman like me for a wife. The accident hadn’t been my fault. He’d walked away, and I hadn’t. Thanks to the drunk driver, and nerve damage, I’d never walk again.

I could have wallowed in self-pity, or let depression drag me down. It had been close for a while. Once Jeremy dumped me, I’d spiraled. I’d barely been existing when Sonja found me. She’d asked for my help, even though she hadn’t explained what she needed. I’d agreed, as long as it wasn’t illegal. She’d smirked and said I’d be fine. Then she’d vanished again, only to show up about five months ago with two kids in tow.

The first two months after the accident had been rough. Adjusting to life in a wheelchair hadn’t been easy. Hell, most days I still struggled. I wondered if I always would.

“How’s my sweet girl today?” I asked, kissing her cheek.

I glanced at the kitchen and knew I’d have to order supplies soon. The money Sonja had left was long gone. She should have returned months ago. Part of me worried she’d forgotten about us. Or worse, she’d gotten into trouble. Being unable to drive made life a little difficult at times. Even if I’d had a car, I wasn’t sure how I’d manage. I hadn’t had insurance when the accident happened. If the drunk driver hadn’t covered my medical expenses, I’d have never gotten my wheelchair. The damn things cost entirely too much.

Thankfully, there were apps for nearly everything these days. I could have groceries delivered, as long as I had money. Maybe someday I could afford a car and figure out how to drive without the use of my legs. It just wouldn’t happen anytime soon.

Chasing the little ones didn’t give me much time for work, and my job barely covered our expenses. If Sonja didn’t return soon, we’d be in trouble. I had enough for some groceries, as long as I bought cheap things like macaroni or spaghetti. I knew the kids needed healthier options, but it was better to feed them than to make them starve.

Judd held his arms up, and I lifted him onto my lap as well. They both curled against me, and I knew they were ready for a nap. Wheeling us into the living room, I picked up their favorite book off the coffee table. We’d read Goodnight Moon so many times, I had it memorized. And yet, the kids wanted to listen to it every day. Sometimes more than once.

We were on page four when someone pounded on the door. I clutched the children to me and stared, too scared to open it. It rattled on the hinges, and I knew it had to be a man on the other side. I’d never met a woman with that much force behind their fist. Didn’t mean there weren’t any. I’d just never known any.

“Who’s there?” I called out.

“You have to the count of three to open this damn door or I’m breaking it down,” a deep voice said from the other side.

My heart leaped into my throat, and I started backing my chair toward the hall. I knew if they really wanted in, there wasn’t any way I could stop them. The way he beat on the door made me fear not only for my life, but the lives of the children. When he made it into the house, we’d be helpless.

I whispered to the kids, hoping they’d listen. “I need you both to go hide. Don’t come out unless I call you. Understand?”

Junie blinked at me and didn’t say anything. Judd stared and refused to move. I whimpered, not wanting anything bad to happen to them. Stuck in my chair, I knew I wouldn’t be able to fight off whoever was trying to break in.

“Lady, you let me in or I swear to Christ it won’t be pretty when I get my hands on you.”

I backed up even more. The door nearly exploded off the hinges as a group of large men came barreling into the house. I screamed, and the children started crying. I held them tight, hoping to soothe them, but I was just as terrified. What did these men want?

“Please, we don’t have anything valuable. Take whatever you want. Just don’t hurt us,” I begged. More men came into the house, and the breath in my lungs froze when I recognized one of them. “Johnny?”

He blinked, and his eyebrows lifted. “Dessa?”

“What’s going on?” Some of my tension eased. It had been a long time since I’d last seen him, but unless he’d drastically changed, I knew he wouldn’t hurt us. Hopefully, that meant the other men wouldn’t either.

“I go by Saint now,” he said, coming farther into the house. “I think the better question is why are you here and with those two kids?”

 “Great action, well-told, and authentic with all the nuances and spirit of small town Texas. Don’t miss it.” -Lone Star Literary Life Reviews

In this enigmatic follow up to his critically acclaimed debut novel The Cuts that Cure, Arthur Herbert returns to the Texas-Mexico border with this chilling mystery set amidst a small town’s bloody loss of innocence.

Amoret, Texas, 1982. Life along the border is harsh, but in a world where cultures work together to carve a living from the desert landscape, Blaine Beckett lives a life of isolation. A transplanted Boston intellectual, for twenty years locals have viewed him as a snob, a misanthrope, an outsider. He seems content to stand apart until one night when he vanishes into thin air amid signs of foul play.

Noah Grady, the town doctor, is a charming and popular good ol’ boy. He’s also a keeper of secrets, both the town’s and his own. He watches from afar as the mystery of Blaine’s disappearance unravels and rumors fly. Were the incipient cartels responsible? Was it a local with a grudge? Or did Blaine himself orchestrate his own disappearance? Then the
unthinkable happens, and Noah begins to realize he’s considered a suspect.

Paced like a lit fuse and full of dizzying plot twists, The Bones of Amoret is a riveting whodunit that will keep you guessing all the way to its shocking conclusion.

Each and every person is a subject with a range of emotions; through experiences, people’s perception of thoughts vary. Every emotion
has a different purpose and the acknowledgment of the feeling affects the
impact on the victim. My lucid ideas about similar emotions blended with other people’s exposure serves as a fine contrast and an intriguing viewpoint. To further understand this outlook, I watch, listen, and interpret these emotions through other people’s experiences in an effort to articulate them, in hopes that I will be able to find the places where these different shades of blue originate and lie within.

Now trapped in the midst of all these dangers, Leigh can’t help but fall back on old habits. She finds comfort in the arms of her new boss, an upbeat hospitality manager who seems almost too perfect.

In order to survive paradise, Leigh will need to learn from her past mistakes or she will be doomed to repeat them.
