#BookReview “The Bellhop Only Stalks Once” by Cat Hickey

An anonymous shrieking toddler and an annoying, overly attentive, flirtatious young bellhop not only interrupt a young woman’s morning yoga routine on the beach, but they’re just the beginning of the vacay-from-hell.

Chloe’s already on edge, proven when Cooper, the steadfast and dependable… and controlling and boring fiancé back home continues to intrude into her thoughts.

Determined to enjoy her Costa Rican getaway, Chloe pushes the negativity from her mind and goes on a guided tour of the island’s volcano trails a few hours away the next day.

However, during her outing, the pesky bellhop, Jaime, shows up again, waving his arms and calling her name. Perturbed, before Chloe can respond, Jaime disappears… without a trace. No one else saw Jaime. Not the park ranger or the resort employees escorting her, but they all discount anything serious happening to the errant bellhop.

Unable to shake her feelings of dread, especially after finding a pendant of Tlaloc—referred to by locals as the God of Death—on the spot where Jaime disappeared, Chloe’s fears are realized when other bellhops go missing from Club Pacifica and other surrounding resorts.

Before the mystery is solved, Chloe will make two new friends, confront a drug dealer, assault a chicken, take a mind-altering drug, become a prime suspect in the case, and develop feelings for one of the resort employees.

And Cooper shows up.

As Chloe plays private investigator, she’s also on a path to self-discovery. One she’s avoided for far too long… and may not live long enough to enjoy.

While I would have liked more details about Chloe’s backstory, her growth during the story made up for what I didn’t know. She’s surrounded by a great cast of characters who may or may not be worthy of her trust.

Despite the dark overtones of kidnapping, The Bellhop Only Stalks Once is a fun read. Well-written with a smooth pace, it was an easy one-sitting read as I needed to know “what happened next.” Mystery readers will enjoy Chloe’s journey.

Enjoy!

Genre: Paranormal Thriller

Blurb

When Adrian Carter followed his wife, Agnes, to their dream home in North Berwick he had no idea it was to be the start of a truly terrifying journey.

Every old house has its folklore and stories so he was told. He hadn’t expected those stories to be true. As a horror writer, Adrian had a terrific imagination, but even he could not envisage what was to come.

Tracie Podger, a multi-genre author, wrote this ghostly tale initially as part of an anthology. But she just couldn’t keep it short enough so released The Last Witch as a novella.

Witches and ghosts, dunking stools, and old houses combine in this entertaining tale of the goings-on at North Berwick House.

Chapter One – 1951

“I think it’s safe to say your client is certifiably mad,” Doctor Matthews said as he and Jacob stared through a glass window into a bare room.

Jacob Wellbeing had been set the task to defend Adrian Carter who was presently rocking in a corner of a padded cell whilst waiting for a verdict in a murder charge to be delivered. Jacob believed he had successfully claimed insanity and after all the evidence had been presented, it would be a surprise if the jury decided otherwise. The guy was clearly nuts. Jacob and Doctor Matthews could hear the mumbles and the reciting of what Adrian had done. There was no doubt he had murdered but his account of it was baffling.

It had all started with the purchase of what was to be a forever home…

“The idea behind this book is fresh and clever and the ending was superb. I was really impressed by the author’s unique and thrilling ending.”

“I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a deeply disturbing villain, relatable heroes, historical settings, and comfortable, yet sophisticated, writing. It is highly entertaining, and is as much a story exploring the relationships of three friends, as it is a gripping tale of horror and suspense.”

“This is not your typical horror story, so throw all your expectations out the window because what you will find is a tale of heroism, love, compassion and heart.”

THE BACKSTAGE MYSTERY SERIES

Tagline: Life upon the wicked stage can be deadly.

Set against the backdrop of the Gilded Age, the Backstage Mystery Series stars Lillian Nolan, an unconventional member of Chicago’s upper class who dreams of a career of fortune and fame in the theatre. Talented and ambitious, she possesses a hidden skill which she is extremely reluctant to use—the ability to communicate with those who have died and now live in the world of “The Beyond.”

The series chronicles her adventures in which she continually becomes enmeshed in solving mysteries which often require her accessing the realm of the paranormal. Filled with an incredible cast of characters—factual, fictional, and sometimes non-physical—who either help or hinder her quest for the truth, the stories take place during a a period considered to be the golden age of both acting and spiritualism in America.

EXCERPT

In 1875, Phillip Kincaid, managing director of Ellicott’s Theatre, disregards the odd physical symptoms he has been having when he goes up to the dress circle to watch the end of a performance of Hamlet, starring up and coming actor, James O’Neill.

Arthur looked over the audience of the theater and saw that almost everyone was focused upon the stage. O’Neill was an actor with substantial talent and ability and he was using every ounce of it to his advantage in the scene. He performed Hamlet’s sword fight with the actor who portrayed Laertes with grace and great athleticism.

They watched enthralled. The crash of swords, the cries from those onstage, and the gasps from the audience members, forced them to place their complete attention on the play as one after another of the royal family of Denmark died onstage in a vision of Renaissance death that was loud, dramatic, and completely enthralling. Along with the rest of the audience, Arthur and Marion were mesmerized.

Phillip watched as well. Pleased, he knew he had made the right decision about O’Neill. Then all at once, a mind-numbing pain shot through the center of his chest and he found he could not breathe. His entire body felt as if it were clamped in a vise. Sweat poured down his face. Wrapping his arms around his chest gave him no relief. What the hell is happening to me?

He tried to call out, to reach out to Arthur but the noise from the stage was so loud and he simply could not form the words. Pain pulsed through him once again and he doubled over in agony. At the very instant he thought he could not take one more moment of it, the pain stopped, the vise miraculously released and he fell back into his seat and slumped over to the side. A long sigh escaped from his body and the world went dark for Phillip Kincaid.

Meet Brittany Elise

Brittany EliseWhere are you from? I’m from a small town outside of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Married with children, pets, or annoying roommates? I am married, but the only children I have right now are of the fur-variety. I have two German shepherds, two cats, and a rabbit.

Are you self-published, traditional, or hybrid? I’m traditionally published with Black Rose Writing, out of Texas.

How long have you been a writer? Gosh, that’s almost hard to say, specifically. I’ve been writing since I was a little girl, so I’m tempted to say my whole life. Haha.

My love for writing began at a very young age–way before I could even type on a keyboard. I was always writing short stories and poems with a fan club of one (my mom.) I never stopped writing, but I don’t think I believed in myself enough to actually pursue it as a career. When I enrolled in college, I took as many creative writing classes as they offered and ended up graduating with a degree in photography and minoring in English. I enjoy art in all its forms, but writing has always been my first love. Even when I was pursuing other careers, writing was always my go-to comfort. I later became an animal obedience instructor and met a children’s author through my dog training. She helped me get my foot through the door, so to speak, and I haven’t turned back since. During the day, I manage an FBO at my local hometown airport, and by night, I dive into my writing with my husband and my four-legged children by my side.

How long did it take you to write your first book? If you don’t count editing time, I can usually knock out a novel (raw, rough draft) in about four-five months. It depends on what I’m writing though. My first book took me several years to complete because I was never satisfied. Truthfully, there are still things I would change if given the chance to go back. I think it’s the curse of the artist.

What’s your favorite genre to write or do you only write in one genre? I love, love, love all things supernatural. I have the most fun writing  it. YA supernatural fiction is my favorite to write, but I dabble in all forms of fiction.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Supernatural/Romance

What are you reading now? Hailey Edwards wrote a series called The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy. I read the first four in a total of three days, and I’m anxiously awaiting the fifth. She’s phenomenal. Those stories are phenomenal.

Favorite beverage to read with? Tea and honey.

Where do you get the most writing done? Most of my writing gets done in the early morning. Especially on the weekends I don’t have to work. I’ll curl up with a blanket in the kitchen chair, and my cat, Boo, will sit on my lap while I write.

Totally addicted to social media or could you live without it? Honestly, I don’t “live” on social media, but I adore Instagram. Namely because of the photographs. That being said though, it would be impossible to do what I do without social media, so I’m immensely grateful for it.

What’s the inspiration behind your latest release? Who’s your favorite character? This is kind of strange to admit, but the inspiration actually came from a song by Aqualung called Strange and Beautiful. I probably live in my head more than I should, and I’m always inventing little scenarios or playing out scenes in my head. I listened to the lyrics and immediately developed this idea that started out as something small, and later became Awakening the Trinity. My favorite character in this book is Wren. He was so much fun to create, and I think he’ll speak to the heart of every high school girl who has had a crush on the “dangerous” boy.

What’s your next project or release? I’m actually working on the prequel to this novel, and also the sequel simultaneously, so I haven’t decided which will be released next, but I’m aiming for next fall. Maybe sooner depending on how editing goes!
