#PreOrder “MURDER NOW AND THEN an utterly gripping crime mystery full of twists (DI Hillary Greene Book 19)” by Faith Martin

cover

~~~
ONE OF THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE DETECTIVES RETURNS.
A BRAND-NEW MYSTERY FROM THE TWO MILLION-SELLING AUTHOR.
Former Detective Hillary Greene and her cold case team are taking a fresh look at the unsolved murder of Michael Beck, found bludgeoned over the head and dead in a river near his home in 2012.
Just twenty-two at the time, he’d recently finished a history degree and had his whole life ahead of him. Everyone said he was a pleasant sort of lad with a passion for the past, quietly living with his parents until he could afford a place of his own. But it quickly turned out that there were at least two people who might have wanted him dead.
The first, his recently-jilted girlfriend Mia de Salle, hadn’t taken the break-up well. The second, his former tutor Dr Timothy Durning, had been accused of sexual harassment by Michael. But the original team could find no forensic evidence linking either of their prime suspects to the crime, nor witnesses placing them in the area when Michael was killed.
Hillary, however, is determined to find fresh leads. But while she and her team get to work, in the city of Oxford two men from the city’s criminal underbelly have been viciously murdered in the last six months.
Are the recent murders and her own cold case linked? More than a decade later, has the same killer struck again? And if so, what’s the connection between the mild-mannered young man and the underworld criminals.
It’s up to Hillary to stop a killer getting away with murder — both now and then.
Perfect for fans of Betty Rowlands, Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, J.R. Ellis, Helen Cox, M.C. Beaton, or Clare Chase.
#BookReview “Third Degree” by Ross Klavan, Tim O’Mara, Charles Salzberg
on Tour October 1 – November 30, 2020
cover
~~~

I enjoyed all three of the novellas of Third Degree.

In The Fifth Column, there is Jake, a tenacious young reporter with an Ivy League education who wants to do his part during WWII. While he doesn’t get to enlist, Jake stumbles upon an Aryan group plotting to commit crimes on U.S. soil.

Jake was a wise antagonist for someone so young, and though he had high aspirations, Jake had no problem putting patriotism ahead of personal gain. The guy had a “Captain America” feel to me.

In Beaned, I found out there is a hierarchy even among criminals. Some have absolutely no issues with “appropriating” goods and reselling them for a living. However, human trafficking is a hard line many will not cross. They also won’t turn a blind eye to it either.

My favorite in the trilogy was Cut Loose Those Who Drag You Down. The frenetic, dysfunctional friendship between Dick, a never-up-and-coming reporter and Solly, a disbarred psychiatrist, made me laugh. Understand me, this is not a humorous story, but these two men couldn’t get out of their own way.

Dick’s answer for any problem is to get married… eight times. Okay, seven—twice to Amy. He also has a girlfriend he’s been with through at least three of his marriages.

Solly sleeps with his patients—which is what got him disbarred—and ALL of Dick’s ex-wives! Come on! HA! He even married the last one, Mage, and they had a child, Silent Adam, who refused to speak. Of course, the marriage went sour and things didn’t end well for Mage.

But even with this Mount Everest of poor decisions between them, things are complicated even more because they’re both involved with women from mob families, Tanya and Lisa. OMG, those two!

Dick is irritating, a bit arrogant, and unapologetic. Solly is a basket case. I cannot say either held the other back, but I’m almost sure both could have been so much more if they’d never met. Dick introduces Solly in the story as his oldest friend. But they were more like Cain and Abel.

When push comes to shove, Dick is… Dick (and Cain) and the title of the story comes into play. The story ended the only way it could, but it left me with concerns for Silent Adam who didn’t ask for such selfish parents.

The original plots and interesting characters of these three very different stories will take you to different places readers of noir crime and historical fiction are sure to be entertained by.

Enjoy!

Synopsis:

“Cut Loose All Those Who Drag You Down”:

A crooked reporter who fronts for the mob and who’s been married eight times gets a visit from his oldest friend, a disgraced and defrocked shrink. The man is in deep trouble and it’s clear somebody is going to pay with his life.

“Beaned”:

After smuggling cigarettes, maple syrup, and coffee, Aggie discovers a much more sinister plot to exploit what some consider a precious commodity: the trafficking of under-aged children for the purposes of sex.

“The Fifth Column”:

Months after America’s entry into World War II, a young reporter uncovers that the recently disbanded German-American Bund might still be active and is planning a number of dangerous actions on American soil.

#BookReview “Comfort Zone” by Stephen Bentley

cover~~~

5/5 Stars!

Comfort Zone opens with what appears to be stalking, which turns into a kidnapping, that turns into a horrific murder.

And that was just the prologue!

Phil Mercer, an English barrister, has lost much… his brother, mother, and beloved wife, Liz, all in two short years.

Phil also appears to be losing his mind.

A “voice” who introduces himself as Vincent is encouraging Phil to kill… to take revenge on those people he believed to be friends, but they instead hindered or stifled his legal career and financial situation.

While he agrees with Vincent, Phil Mercer isn’t a killer. Or is he?

The back and forth with Phil/Vincent reminded me of Smeagol/Gollum and I wondered who would win in the end.

Phil decides retribution is his to take, but as he moves closer to his parlor game, a summons from court convinces him he’s going to prison for perjury and he sinks into depression. However, spurred on by Vincent, he sets his plan in motion.

Stephen Bentley’s plot twists kept me on edge. Learning Phil’s military backstory brings clarity… and pity for the barrister, but things are still not as they seem and I don’t know who’s more confused, Phil or me. HA!

I’m not saying anyone deserves to die because that would be… wrong, of course, but Phil Mercer is surrounded by some pretty awful people who evoke little sympathy in every stage of his life, and even after, however, in the end, I still can’t decide if Phil is crazy, or crazy like a fox.

This quick read is great suspense with psychological and noir elements you won’t see coming. It looks like an easy, open and shut case on the surface, but trust me, there’s nothing easy about Phil Mercer or the Comfort Zone.

Enjoy!

There’s a killer lurking in all of us. Sometimes you just don’t know it.
Take Phil Mercer, for example, what dark secret from his past changes a decent man, and respected professional into a man with murder on his mind?
Down to earth Northerner, Phil Mercer, begins to question why so-called university friends failed to help him establish a practice at London’s Criminal Bar.
Despite that and colleagues’ professional jealousy, he goes on to achieve success as a fearless defender of society’s less fortunate until his career is threatened by events triggered by something completely out of his control.
Figuring his life and career are about to change forever, Mercer strives to find a way to right wrongs by inventing a new parlour game called ‘Comfort Zone.’
At a dinner party surrounded by colleagues he insists they all play the game. He introduces it after dinner as a ‘storytelling game.’
He adds – “the easy choice is not an option at all. What terrifies you? What scares you shitless? Be brave. Be reckless. You are among friends. What can possibly go wrong? It’s just a parlour game, right?”

PROLOGUE

2017

She heard the footsteps and guessed the guy was about ten yards behind her. It must be a man. They are too heavy for a woman. Another few hundred yards and she would reach safety – her garden flat home. I swear, no more drug runs for Ben Turner, she thought. This is too risky. Her heart pounded faster. She could hear it thumping in her chest until the sound of her panting blocked it out. She could smell aftershave. It wasn’t her cologne, nor was it her breathlessness she could now hear. Before the lights went out, she thought, Fuck you, Ben!

When she regained consciousness her first sensation was movement.  I’m in the boot of a car.  She was unable to see anything. I must be blindfolded. She tried to check for a blindfold but trying to move her arms was futile. Her hands were tied behind her back and she couldn’t move her legs as they too were bound. Then she felt a searing pain in the back of her head and lost consciousness once more.

Clueless as to time, she knew she was in a strange room. It stunk of urine. In the distance she heard the low rumble of motorway traffic. Her head still hurt, her eyes unable to pierce the gloom, but she could see shadows. The blindfold’s gone.  On trying to move, she heard a scuffling noise and knew she was tied to a chair. She heard a door open but was unable to see in the dark. Then she heard footsteps walking away and heard a second door open. A few moments later, a car engine started and the headlamp beams flooded both doorways and the room with bright light, penetrating the darkness. She was forced to shield her eyes from the light by tilting her head to the side, averting her gaze. Curiosity taking over, she scrunched her eyes and made out the figure of a man in front of her. A man dressed in black, wearing a ski-mask. He held a long knife in front of him. He cut the tape across her mouth before running the blade down her cheek. She felt the blood as it ran to the corner of her mouth, giving her the metallic taste of her own blood.

“Who are you?” she asked in panic. “Is this about the drugs? Here, have them.”

Removing his mask, the man in black said nothing.

EXCERPT

As much as he tried to hide it, Deal felt nervous as he knocked on the door of Internal Affairs.

The voice resonated in his head. “Enter.”

It was the tone, the command, the authority in the voice that reminded him why he was nervous. One false word, one false move and I’m fired, he thought.

Reading the open file, Emily Breen looked up through heavy-rimmed glasses before speaking again. “We meet again, Detective Deal. Sit.”

Breen pointed to a regular-looking seat on the opposite side of the desk from her high-backed executive chair. She continued reading. Deal sat watching her in silence.

Peering over her glasses, Breen said, “Remind me. When was the first time we met?”

“I think you know. It’s all there in my file. Larry Etchwell, Coroner’s Court. I was still with the Human Trafficking Department.”

Breen was silent. She appeared to be deep in thought.

Her next words broke the silence. “The psych evaluation is all good. Says you are fit to remain on active duty.”

“Good. I knew that but it’s good to hear the experts say it too.” Deal emphasised experts. The sarcasm wasn’t missed by Breen.

“Deal. You know the score. Why do you make things difficult for yourself?”

Deal ignored caution. “I always do things the hard way. Haven’t you heard?”

Breen ignored him. “What is this thing with the stutter?”

“How do you mean?”

“You’ve seen the report. What you told the shrink.”

“Remind me. What did I say?”

“If you were a rattlesnake, the stutter would be your rattle.”

Deal smiled at the thought of that meeting with the shrink. “Yeah. That’s what I said. It’s a fact.”

“But why? Why a stutter?”

“I don’t fucking know why. Why does a rattlesnake have a rattle?”

“There you go again, Detective Deal.”

“What?”

“Not helping yourself.”

“Are we done?”

“No. We are not. I have to tell you, one more loss of control. One more death, self-defence or not, you are finished. Do you hear me?”

“I hear you.”

“Good. Is there anything else you wish to say?”

“Can I ask a question?”

“You may.”

“Why does a bird fly?”

“What do you mean?”

“Asking me why I stutter if threatened is like asking a bird why it flies. Why an elephant has big ears. It’s just so. And one other thing – ask these guys what they were going to do to me.”

“I can’t. You killed them.”

“Too right. Before they killed me.”
