With a wave of her hand, Cate sent the Elody crashing to the floor.

“Guards, stop her!” Elody screamed.

Blasts of kinetic energy hurtled towards Cate. She raised her hand, deflecting it away from her as she advanced towards Elody.

“Charlie? Drake? Where are you?” Steve asked. “We’re under attack.”

“We’re kind of busy right now, Dad,” Charlie answered.

“Remember that stunner I gave you for your birthday? Did you bring it?”

She felt in the pocket of her dress. “You said only use it in a dire emergency. Of course, I brought it.”

“Good. Use it on Cate and get the hell out of there.”

Drake yanked Charlie out of the way as a kinetic blast came at them. She felt the burn of invisible energy against her skin. Drake hurled fireballs at the Devas which barely stunned them.

“What about Jason?” Charlie prompted, pulling her stunner out of her dress. “We can’t just leave him here.”

“We—” Steve cried out.

Charlie’s heart stopped for a moment. “Dad? Dad, are you okay?” she asked. “Jalen? Alva? Are you there?” She glanced at Drake when no response came. “You need to go. Go help my dad, I’ll stay here with Cate.”

“Not bloody likely!” Drake protested.

She’s fists clenched. What was it with men and their over protectiveness? Hell, she might be younger but she was still a McCray.

A Deva came at them, about to strike Drake. “No!” Charlie cried. A blast of energy shot out of her hand, sending the Death Dealer crashing across the floor. She looked down at her hand in surprise. “That’s new.” She met Drake’s gaze. “Please, I can’t lose my dad and it looks like I can handle myself against the Devas.”

Drake’s jaw clenched. “I will be right back. If anything happens, I will not be happy with you, little witch.”

Drake shimmered out as Charlie turned her attention back to the battle. More Devas seemed to be appearing, Cate took them out one by one. How long before the blood rage finally consumed her?

Charlie raised her hand but nothing happened. Whatever strange power she had channeled wouldn’t be triggered so easily. She’d panicked before; so she gave into her panic and raised her hands. An invisible whirl of energy sent the Devas crashing away from her aunt and made Charlie’s long brown hair stand on end.

Elody hurled her own power at Cate, sending her staggering back a step. Cate raised her hand again, locking Elody in place.

Charlie grinned. Good, no witch could escape the control of the Grand Mistress, the leader and high priestess of all witches. Another Death Dealer came at her, clutching her by the throat before she could react. She gasped, hands flaying as she tried to fight him off.

Devas were strong; his hand locked around her throat like a vice. Charlie tried to summon her new ability again, nothing happened. Nor could she call out to Cate. Instead, she reached up, grasping the Deva’s throat. Charlie’s Denai medium powers usually only worked on spirits, but still, she reached out to compel him just as she’d seen her aunt do. Her eyes flashed black as she unleashed the power of her own touch on him. The Deva laughed, then his eyes widened as his body exploded in a burst of silver sparks.

Cate clenched her hand into a fist when she set her sight on Vicus. The Deva leader gasped as her power locked him in place.

I’m celebrating a book birthday today and hope you’ll join me! A Desolate Hour, the final novel in my Point Pleasant series, is finally available for purchase. I’m wrapping up all the plot threads begun in the first two novels, A Thousand Yesteryears and A Cold Tomorrow. Caden Flynn and all my regular characters are back, along with a few new ones. The Mothman, of course, is front and center.

When I set out to write the Point Pleasant series, I envisioned the mystery relating to the origins of the Mothman spanning all three books. But I also wanted each book to focus on an aspect of Point Pleasant folklore in addition to my favorite cryptid.
