#AudioTour “Break Through (The District Line Series Book 2)” by C.F. White

Audiobook Series Tour: The District Line by CF White

Author: C.F. White

Narrator: Piers Ryman

Length: 7 hours 38 minutes

Series: The District Line, Book 2

Release date: Dec. 11, 2019

Publisher: C.F. White

Genre: Contemporary Gay Romance

Should falling in love really get in the way of your lifelong dreams?

Sebastian Saunders is 3,000 miles away from home. Working for his father’s expanded business in New York, he’s left behind the music career he craved, the friends he relied upon, and possibly the love of his life. In a city that never sleeps, how can the nights cure a broken heart?

Jay Ruttman is in London, throwing himself harder into football and his quest to make it on the professional playing field. Locking himself back in the closet, how can he ever open the door, and his heart, again?

A chance encounter in New York where Jay and Seb rekindle their lost romance sets them both on a path to self-discovery and coming to terms with their past, their present, and their future.

This is the second part of the District Line serial, where half-time oranges are swapped for the Big Apple.

Brought up in a relatively small town in Hertfordshire, C F White managed to do what most other residents try to do and fail—leave.

Studying at a West London university, she realised there was a whole city out there waiting to be discovered, so, much like Dick Whittington before her, she never made it back home and still endlessly search for the streets paved with gold, slowly coming to the realisation they’re mostly paved with chewing gum. And the odd bit of graffiti. And those little circles of yellow spray paint where the council point out the pot holes to someone who is supposedly meant to fix them instead of staring at them vacantly whilst holding a polystyrene cup of watered-down coffee.

She eventually moved West to East along that vast District Line and settled for pie and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.

After her second son was born with a rare disability, C F White’s life changed and brought pen back to paper having written stories as a child but never the confidence to show them to the world. Now, having embarked on this writing journey, she can’t stop. So strap in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Q&A with Author C.F. White

  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • I’d finished the full District Line series some time ago and really wanted to turn it into audio to have someone bring these characters to life. They were so prominent in my head, I wanted to give them voices that everyone could hear! As this was my only self published series, it gave me the freedom to source a narrator interested in bringing these books to life. I think I was lucky to stumble on Piers Ryman when I did which was through another author who he had narrated for. After exchanging a few emails and him sending a sample of Kick Off, I knew he’d be perfect to narrate the two distinct London accents. His performance often made me laugh at my own jokes and cry at those heart wrenching moments. So from there, we agreed to do the whole trilogy.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Yes, I think so. I think dialogue is an important aspect when it comes to audio. When a narrator can perform dialogue distinctly and really make the characters stand out, then that’s a great audio to listen to and takes the listener right into the heart of the book. Reams and reams of prose can be difficult to concentrate on listening to.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • Not at all. I wrote these books many many years ago and they first came to life on Wattpad, the online writing community. I gained a following with these books and the support from there and the little success I had was what made me go into traditional publishing. Never did I think they’d come out in audio. But my background in film, television and theatre meant that I write very visually anyway and I think that translates well into audio, especially the dialogue. Although, I did tinker with the second two books after hearing the first and now understand how writing might be adapted for audio. It’s amazing how listening to someone read out your own words can help you improve!
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • I was put in touch with Piers through another author who wrote similar books to me. When Piers said he was a London lad himself, I knew it was the right partnership as he instantly knew all the places I was referring to in the book and the accents he produced were spot on – especially Jay who’s east London roots weren’t a million miles away from Piers’ own.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • I’d say we worked pretty closely together. He preps all books before narrating, so it’s great he knew the whole story before diving in and if he was unsure about anything, he’d ask and I could give him a detailed answer. I gave him full character bios with directions on accents but as he’s familiar with the area this is set, he didn’t need too much guidance. He also changed up a few accents on supporting characters but did ask me first and I agreed to it, simply because it was a way to distinguish between characters speaking. After he’d finished the audio, I would listen and review and if there were any instances where he’d perhaps got the wrong accent on the wrong character, he’d happily change. It was a great working relationship and I really wouldn’t hesitate using Piers again. He’s fantastic!
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • The inspiration mostly came from having been around football (that’s soccer to the US) most of my life. My dad was a referee and I also worked with a few ex-Academy footballers who had been released from pro contracts. There are still, to this date, no out-gay professional players and that was something I was interested in exploring – the things that could affect a footballer from their early academy days to turning professional. Jay was a well thought out and researched character. Once he was fleshed out, I needed the man who he would fall hook, line and sinker for that would eventually mean he had to come out. Seb was just that – the loud mouth rocker who was hellbent on being in the limelight. He was influenced by a mixture of people, some in the public eye, and it can become obvious who he was most influenced by 😉
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • I write little and often! I have two children, one with SEN, and a full time job so writing happens as and when I can so I don’t think there ever has been a complete burn out for me as yet as I don’t get as much time as I would like to dedicate to it.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Yes but I only tend to listen to books that I’ve already read in ebook form, mostly because I listen in the car or when doing something else like running so I can dip in and out. What appeals to me most in hearing the character voices and how a good narrator can sound like two completely different people and make it feel like there’s a movie playing in your head.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • Oh yes! The comedic timing was a real eye opener! Sometimes, skim reading a book might mean that the jokes and one liners are missed, or not seen as funny. But when I listened to some of the lighter, funnier moments in the audio, I really chuckled! There’s a particular scene in the second book that I still, after listening to it several times, snort laughter simply for how it has been performed. The heart wrenching moments are also more resonating, I never thought I would cry at my own words but Piers made me. A good performance can really produce great cathartic listening.
  • What’s next for you?
    • I’m currently writing a romantic suspense trilogy. I have a thing about writing in threes! And I’d love for this to also come out in Audio, but we’ll see if I can finish it all first!!

EXCERPT

DALLAS

The man stepped close and got in my face.

“You have two options. Your band can rehearse and do sound check without you, or you cancel until tomorrow when I’ve had the chance to organize extra venue security. Starting now, you go nowhere without me glued to your side, and before you open your trap to say I’m not your minder, I’ll assure you, I am. Contracts have been signed with my company. Legally binding contracts. So unless you want a lawsuit that will give you one hell of a headache, you will co-operate.”

The man was pissing me off. I slammed my hands on my hips and took a step back.

“And just how will you know if I’m following your orders tonight?”

He dragged his hand over his buzz cut. Between the hair and his muscular build, there was no doubt in my mind he was ex-military, used to giving orders and being obeyed. Jordan stepped forward again and I was forced to tilt my head back to look at his face. Fuck, the man had kissable lips – plump, tinged with pink, and at the moment, slightly parted. His minty breath wafted over me.

“You’re gonna be a pain in my fucking arse, aren’t you?”

I opened my mouth, closed it again.

“There will a security guard stationed outside the door. He’ll have my instructions and he’ll be armed.”

Jordan spun on his heel and faced Gus. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t be here, but as no one else was available, I drew the short straw. The only fucking straw. I just returned a few hours ago after two days in the desert in Afghanistan. During that time, I’ve had no sleep, one coffee about an hour ago and I’m feeling a might pissed off at your client’s attitude. I should be on day’s off. Instead, I’m being forced to babysit a singer who has tickets on himself and is a legend in his own lunchbox. Sort his attitude out before I get back tomorrow.”

My eyes dropped to his arse, encased in tight jeans. I swallowed the drool which formed as I watched the tight muscles rise and fall with each step he took.

With one hand on the handle of the door, he turned and faced me again. I suspected he had something more he wanted to say. Instead, he shook his head, left and slammed the door behind him.

#GuestPost Writing Gay Romances – 4 FAQ by Kelli A. Wilkins

by Romance Author Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

My name is Kelli Wilkins and I write romances. My books cover nearly every genre and vary in heat level from mild to super-spicy. People have different reactions when they learn what I write. (Sometimes they gasp and pretend to be horrified, and then ask me if I “act out” my love scenes at home. Uh, no. I write fiction—that means I make stuff up!)

But when people find out that I write gay romances—that really gets them going! “Why would you write one of those? You’re not a man or gay.” (Here’s my turn to gasp and act surprised. Really? You’re kidding!) I generally respond with: “Why shouldn’t I write gay romances? I wrote a vampire romance, and I’ve never been a vampire.” (That usually quiets people down for a while.)

I get a lot of questions about “why” or “how” I write gay romances. Here are the top four, along with my answers.

#1: You’ve written lots of straight romances. Why write gay romances?

Why not? I’m a writer. And as a writer, I write whatever romance book comes to me, whether it’s a contemporary, historical, paranormal, or gay romance. My stories are about people who meet, fall in love, and overcome obstacles to be with each other.

This basic philosophy applies whether the characters are same-sex, different sex, or space alien and earth girl. Love is love and romance is romance. I’m not married to one specific genre or heat level. I go where the story and the characters take me.

When I wrote Four Days with Jack, A Secret Match, and Killer in Wolf’s Clothing I trusted my instincts and wrote the story that was in my head. Although all three books are contemporary gay romances, they’re very different.

A Secret Match coverIn A Secret Match, a big part of the storyline centers around Everett dealing (or rather, not dealing) with his sexuality, and his (un)willingness to be open about who he really is. Ev has been in a committed relationship for years and is afraid that if he doesn’t come out, he’ll lose the love of his life. He’s also worried about his career. How will the world view a gay wrestler? Will there be backlash if he comes out?

Conversely, David, from Four Days with Jack, has Four Days with Jack covernever come to terms with his sexuality. He’s been lying to himself for years about his orientation and hiding his true desires. David has always loved his gay best friend (Jack) and has fantasized about being his lover, but he lacked the courage to admit his feelings—until now.

The main characters in Killer in Wolf’s Clothing are comfortable with their sexuality, but have other issues to deal with (like shapeshifting and a serial killer). This super-hot paranormal is a fun look at the werewolf legend and blends romance, mystery, danger, humor, and sizzling love scenes.

#2: How do you write the gay love scenes?

I approach a same-sex love scene the same way I would if I was writing about a hetero couple. When I write a straight romance, about half of the scenes are written from a male point of view. So I have experience thinking about scenes from a male perspective anyway.

There’s not much difference in writing a story from two male points of view. Writing a love scene isn’t only about the gender or the anatomy of the characters—it’s about creating a believable, intimate scene where two people express their love for each other.

Each character in each book is unique, so the love scenes are always approached from different directions. In Four Days with Jack, David is introduced to a world of new experiences. Everett and Josh’s first kiss in A Secret Match was a tender and sweet moment; while the first time readers meet Deke from Killer in Wolf’s Clothing they realize he’s anything but shy.

#3: What’s the hardest part about writing a gay romance?

The answer to this is quite surprising, and no, it has nothing to do with bedroom activities. The hardest part about writing a same-sex romance or love scene is pronouns.

As I’m writing, I’ll dash off something like: “He ran his hand down his chest and…” Wait, what? He ran his own hand down his own chest? No… I have to pay extra close attention when revising or editing a same-sex scene. Too many “his” references and the reader doesn’t know who is doing what. Better to say: “He ran his hand down Kevin’s chest and…”

#4: Are you concerned about what people will think about you writing gay romances?

Not in the least. People will think whatever they want. I realize that not everyone wants to read the same type of romance. Some readers love historicals, others only read contemporaries or paranormals, and that’s fine. But if readers are turned off to me as an author just because I write gay romances… well, that’s too bad, see ya.

When I wrote my first gay romance, I considered “what people would think” about the book and me writing it—for about three seconds. Then I reminded myself that I’m a writer, and I create the characters and scenes that make up the book.

I don’t worry about what people might think of me writing about two male characters kissing, going to bed, or making dinner. Basically, the story needs to be told, and I’m the one telling it. As a writer, I’ve made up all sorts of things: an erotic Bigfoot story, a historical Viking tale, detailed ménage scenes (in all combinations), and a first-person vampire love story.

Writers need to turn off their internal editors and forge ahead with the story as it should be (and needs to be) told. If we constantly worried about what grandma would think about our writing, or if we were afraid to open up and let the characters (and the story) take us into the bedroom, we’d never write anything except G-rated fables.

I once read a blog where a woman was “confessing” to writing an erotic romance, even though she couldn’t tell anyone about it and wouldn’t “dare” put her real name on the story. I got to wondering…why? Why hide your writing? And if you’re “ashamed” to be writing in a particular genre, why invest the time and energy into something you’re not going to stand behind?

Now more than ever, I’m just as proud/PRIDEful of my gay romances as I am of my straight romances. Why? Because I’m a romance writer—and in my books, everyone deserves to be in love and live happily-ever-after with whatever partner they choose.

And that’s the way it should be… in fiction and in real life. Here’s the book summary to my first gay romance, Four Days with Jack. I hope you’ll check it out. I fell in love with the characters, and I hope readers will too. It’s got a good blend of humor, drama, and plenty of sizzling love scenes!

Enjoy & Happy Reading!

#GuestPost Celebrate Pride Month by Kelli A. Wilkins

Celebrate Pride Month with… Four Days with Jack

By Romance Author Kelli A. Wilkins

Hi everyone,

To celebrate Pride Month, I’m sharing a look at the making of my gay romance, Four Days with Jack. In this contemporary novella, best friends David and Jack embark on a sexual relationship. David has always loved Jack and has fantasized about being his lover, but he lacked the courage to admit his feelings—until now.

Four Days with Jack cover

Four Days with Jack is one of the few books I wrote without an outline. I think not having a pre-planned structure let the characters write their own story (so to speak), and took the book in new directions.

At first, I didn’t know what the story would be. All I had was a basic plot (straight guy comes out to his gay best friend), a title, and one pivotal scene that takes place in a bathroom. (For those of you who have read the book, you know which scene I’m talking about—but I won’t give it away here.)

From there, I let my imagination wander and came up with the resort, the rest of the plot, and the unusual cast of characters that Jack and David encounter. As I wrote, David quickly revealed a major conflict—inner turmoil. Over four days, David and Jack learn a lot about themselves, each other, and what sacrifices they’ll make to stay together.

David has kept his true desires a secret from himself and everyone else. He’s afraid of what people will think about him if they know (or even suspect) that he’s gay. How will they react? Will they judge him? If so, how will his life change?

These aren’t the typical types of questions that my straight characters have to face in their romances. And this line of thinking really got me wondering about what it’s like for people to come out in real life. Will they be shunned by friends and family? Should they tell anyone? Live a lie? Move to a new state? What if they live in a state that’s more conservative and not gay-friendly? What will their coworkers think? Is their preference really anybody’s business?

I picked up on this theme of “What will people think?” and ran with it. In the book, David points out that Jack’s family disowned him when he came out, and David doesn’t want to go through the same type of heartache. Jack’s reply is pretty much: “So? They’ll get over it.”

As I was writing this story, I considered “what people would think” about this book. How can a woman write a gay romance? What will people think about the love scenes? Then I reminded myself that I’m a writer, and I create the characters and scenes that make up the book. Basically, the story needs to be told, and I’m the one telling it.

Writers need to turn off their internal editors and forge ahead with the story as it should be (and needs to be) told. If we constantly worried about what grandma would think about our writing, or if we were afraid to open up and let the characters and story take us into the bedroom, we’d never write anything except G-rated bedtime fables. And if a friend/relative/whoever has a problem with the subject matter, Jack’s right: they’ll get over it.

Or maybe not. One reader commented that she didn’t like the antagonist (Frank). As a writer, I’m glad to hear that! Frank is a blatant homophobic ass who says some pretty awful things to David and Jack, and he treats his own wife like crap.

So why is he in the story? For two reasons: 1. to show that not everyone accepts openly gay couples, and 2. to add a level of confrontation and intolerance that help band David and Jack together during a crisis moment. Is Frank an over-the-top stereotype? No, I don’t think so, because he’s a compilation of a few real people I’ve encountered.

Even in this day and age, some people are offended by gay romances and consider them “icky” or immoral. (Yes, I was actually told by a book reviewer that gay romances are icky!) My philosophy is pretty simple when it comes to that: it’s a free country, so read whatever you want —but don’t expect me to censor what I write because you have a problem with it.

Now more than ever, I’m just as proud of my gay romances as I am of my straight romances. Why? Because I’m a romance writer—and in my books, everyone deserves to be in love and live happily-ever-after with whatever partner they choose.

And that’s the way it should be… in fiction and in real life.

The moment you get all you ever wanted…

Pro-snowboarder, Reef Reid, has it all, except the one thing he desperately wants: the girl, the white picket fence and the happily ever after. At the peak of his career, he turns his back on the upcoming season and flies to a tropical island paradise to defrost.

At least that’s where he was supposed to go; a ticketing mishap has him landing in Queenstown, New Zealand, famous for its idyllic ski resorts.

Stratford ‘Ford’ Wallace understands attraction to the opposite sex. He’s a true playboy at heart after all; a genuine love ‘em and leave ‘em type. But all that is flipped on its head when the enigmatic Reef Reid literally drops out of the sky.

When a whiteout traps them together on a mountaintop, neither expects the explosive attraction that sparks between them. They’re unable to resist each other, but will they give into temptation? Or will the avalanche that tears through the mountain end them?

Unexpected #2

Everything he didn’t know he wanted, and now couldn’t live without…

Paramedic and mountain rescuer Stratford ‘Ford’ Wallace fell hard and fast for pro-snowboarder, Reef Reid. For a ‘straight’ guy, falling in love with a dude was not what he expected, but his explosive attraction to Reef is undeniable. Neither of them have uttered those three little words yet, but Ford knows Reef feels the same. At least, he thinks he does.

Reef is smashing his pre-season training at Fernie, the idyllic Canadian snow resort, getting wicked air and landing what could be season-winning jumps. What’s even better is that his man is with him. Going home to Ford every night is what Reef always dreamed of— his very own happily ever after.

Knowing they’re ready, they take the next step in their relationship— meeting the parents. But when tragedy strikes on the slopes, can Ford push through the painful memories and be what Reef needs?

Ford will sacrifice himself, literally putting both his heart and his life on the line, to protect his man. But will it all be for nothing when Reef is presented with an offer that’s too good to refuse?

Author Bio

By day Ann Grech lives in the corporate world and can be found sitting behind a desk typing away at reports and papers or lecturing to a room full of students. With her quirky glasses and shiny leather briefcase, she has the librarian look nailed. All laced up tight in her pencil skirts and killer heels, her students can only fantasise about what she gets up to in her spare time. If only they could see those tattoos! Oh, and those notepads of story ideas tucked away in odd places that would be sure to have them fanning themselves!

By night she’s a wife and mum and a purveyor of saucy stories that are filled with lust, raunchy scenes and ultimately love. Ann’s an avid reader of anything sexy and firmly believes in the motto ‘leave mummy alone, she’s reading or writing.’ Because of that, she is pretty hopeless when it comes to getting dinner on the table on time or cleaning the house.
