Book Two in the Psychedelic Love Series

Magical Romance

Date Published: May 2021

Publisher: Ocean Flower Press

Magical, sexy, tropical, and terrifying — Mushroom Honeymoon follows a couple’s quest for harmony and love, despite physical and mental obstacles.

Newly married, Saman wants to be a wonderful husband, but serious health concerns are affecting his daily life and marriage. To improve his situation, he undergoes a kidney transplant, but the procedure leads to as many complications as solutions to his problems.

After the operation, Saman’s wife, Thelma, plans a belated honeymoon to Hawaii, hoping it will help her troubled husband relax. Before they leave, a friend gives Thelma the contact of a wealthy entrepreneur who hosts transcendental magic mushroom (psilocybin) and psilohuasca (ayahuasca component + magic mushrooms) ceremonies on his secluded Hawaiian estate. Based on her own visions and transformative experiences with psychedelics, Thelma believes the ceremony may benefit Saman, and she books the psychedelic retreat.

As the couple explores the lush landscape of Hawaii, the trip reveals the strengths and weaknesses of their bond. Saman grows hesitant to attend the mushroom ceremony, while Thelma becomes convinced that it’s exactly what her husband needs. What she doesn’t realize is that Saman harbors a secret that could threaten more than just their marriage.

Is the honeymoon of their love only beginning? Or will Saman’s dishonesty lead to the destruction of their relationship?

In Mushroom Honeymoon, Charlotte Dune creates an emotional and supernatural romance, teaming with visionary energy and surreal hallucinations, taking the reader deep into the psyches of two incomplete individuals seeking to emerge together in wholeness and love.

Mushroom Honeymoon, is book two in The Psychedelic Love Series and can be read as a standalone or in sequence. It picks up where Cactus Friends: A Psychedelic Love Story leaves off and delves into the challenges of marriage, plant medicine culture, and the joys of Hawaii.

Excerpt

As their lips parted, a hush fell over the crowd and Bāne Kama strolled out from the living room. Bare-chested, he wore white linen pants with a belt of braided plant fibers and a necklace of golf-ball-sized black beads with a large Hawaiian fishhook dangling above his navel.

As he passed, Thelma got a better view of his tattoos, including a detailed drawing of an octopus on his spinal column, with tentacles wrapping around his sides, creating the effect of the creature riding on his back. He faced the crowd with his arms outstretched and palms lifted. The ocean shimmered in the distance beyond his sculpted physique.

Nervous energy sparked through Thelma and she shifted her legs to release the tension. Bāne opened his mouth and, in a deep, clear voice, bellowed a melody of fluid Hawaiian words.

Who was this man? The more Thelma saw him, the more she grew convinced they’d met before.

The song finished and the audience applauded. Bāne pressed his enormous hands together in prayer and tipped his head. He scanned the crowd. “We’ll now hike to the sacred ceremony space and begin our journey.”

With the rest of the guests, they trailed behind Bāne’s hulking form as he led them around the guest houses and up a hill; via a stone path, they entered the jungle.

Read an excerpt:

Though the wide mirror made the tiny room feel big, it had the opposite effect on Tal. She splashed water on her face. Her reflection seemed to shrink in the big glass, making her feel like a single speck of humanity on a vast planet in an endless universe. A lone Vessel housing the infinity of Spirit. She splashed more water and blinked. A more present and focused woman blinked back—one who wasn’t much different than the woman who had been uprooted from her old life in Pittsburgh. But she had accepted an insane job as a ghost host and had been branded with her very first tattoo. Her badge and gun were gone, and the concept of “protect and serve” now meant something else entirely. Tal grabbed one of the soft white towels and dried her face. The cloth smelled fresh and clean, like air-dried linen—it was homey, comforting She caught her own gaze in the mirror one more time. That frightened, hopeless woman from the pawnshop window two weeks ago was gone. A more confident person replaced her—equally uncertain but willing and ready to face a new and unpredictable future. Perhaps her change was more like the grown-up happy child after all, and less like the dried up pool full of leaves and dirt. A sudden pain stabbed her left ankle, and the skin around her new tattoo seemed to—move. Tal sat on the bed, yanked up her pant leg and crossed her left foot over her right knee. While most of the iridescent vines shimmered normally, a small cluster at the center of her inside leg were twisting together into a small circular mark at her ankle. They pulled in the hidden SObY letters, elongating and absorbing them to form a kind of Celtic or Romanesque knot made of iridescent vines. Her flesh burned slightly as the center of the twisting knot opened and a tiny image took shape. The figure was more primitive and cryptic, like a totem carving or cave painting, but it definitely had wings. One last vine connected and the twisting stopped. So did the pain. Tal inhaled sharply. She held her breath, steeled her nerve, and touched the mark. Though the texture looked different, and though the mark was round against the straight, interconnected tendrils of the tattoo that circled her leg, the skin felt the same on both. Tal exhaled and closed her eyes, unable to discern where one ended and the other began. When she opened her eyes again, she caught the symbol’s shrouded image for a fleeting moment before it finished. What she’d thought was a primitive knot or ancient medallion of vines turned out to be—a nest. At its center, the angel figure had become an enigmatic, nearly invisible dove clutching a vine in its beak like an olive branch. The mark twisted closed, hiding the nest and bird inside. Goosebumps tore up and down Tal’s skin. She shifted to the nearby desk and fired up her computer. Her trembling fingers flew over the keyboard as she researched images of doves, dove symbolism, the “Serve Others” expression, and any other ideas the tattoo inspired. Her search turned up a host of disparate sites—from the dove above Jesus at his baptism, to white birds being released at weddings and funerals, to recipes on preparing tasty squab. Nothing reflected this tattoo or its particular elements. “This is crazy,” she mumbled, working her shoulders to unstick the tension. “That many Vessels in the world, spanning decades, and not a single image or hit?” *** Excerpt from The Vessels by Anna M. Anna M. Elias Anna Elias is a screenwriter who began her career as Don Johnson’s assistant on Miami Vice. She’s worked on feature films such as Nell, The Rainmaker, The Client, 12 Monkeys, A Time to Kill, and Practical Magic. She has written and co-written spec films, TV scripts, and award-winning shorts. Anna’s passion for justice translates to her work. This was especially true on the set of John Grisham’s A Time to Kill. Canton, Mississippi had just suffered great racial hardship and division in a Mayoral race. With Anna’s encouragement, the movie crew made extra efforts to befriend, buy from, and work with the townspeople, and it served to break down walls of inequality and injustice that had divided the town for decades. The impact was so positive that Dan Rather traveled there to tape a 2-part special for 48 Hours.

EXCERPT

Excerpt 3: Kylie crossed her legs and then her arms. Her emotion was very visible on her face. Her long bangs hung to her eyebrows and bounced back and forth as she shook her head. “I don’t know that much but from what I’ve read, it sounds like it might be able to help me get past some trauma.”

Nodding, Eli silently urged her to continue. “I have tried talk therapy a million times but all they want to do is replay crap over and over. I just stay sad.”

Eli raised his brows but kept the rest of his expression as bland as possible. He crossed his legs, too and leaned slightly to his right. “Have you tried other modalities, other types of therapy?”

She looked down at her fingers which seemed to be wrestling with each other.

“Uh, yes. I did cognitive behavioral therapy, didactic therapy and what’s the other one? The one with the lights?” She looked up at Eli for an answer.

“EMDR,” he was taking notes but not taking his eyes off of her. Nodding again, he said, “And did any of those seem to help?”

Kylie took a deep breath and looked back at her tired fingers and shook her head.

“Okay, well tell me what you know about FLP then and how you found me.”

Kylie straightened up in the chair and said, “Well, from what I understand, FLP is like PLR except you move to a future life instead of a past one. Right?”

Eli nodded, accepting the rudimentary understanding.

“And I found you online. I can’t remember how or what I was googling but it came up and then of course I saw it all over Facebook the next day, all the ads.”

“Yea, pretty interesting how that happens,” Eli rolled his eyes to see if she would smile and she did.

She shifted in her chair then and let herself take a deep breath.

“So Kylie, I think I mentioned in my email reply that the initial session is an intake, so we won’t be doing the FLP today. You understood that?”

She nodded and seemed to brighten a little. “Yes, I get it. I just want to feel better, so I don’t care what I have to do. I’ll do it.”

“Okay, good. So what’s going on? What made you start googling?”

“Well, Dr. Cranston, I…” She picked at a piece of lint on her dress slacks.

“I want to be able to see what life could be like for me. I know that people tell me I should just live my life and leave the past behind but…but they just don’t know what it’s like.”

Eli nodded and took notes. “Yes, and I’m sure some are well-meaning when they say that.”

She shook her head, brows furrowed. “No. They aren’t well-meaning. They aren’t!

Eli was a little surprised at the sudden anger but given her long list of therapy attempts, he wasn’t shocked. She had a lot hiding behind those bangs.

“Okay, perhaps they aren’t well-meaning. Could you venture a guess as to why they might say that, then? Why they wouldn’t be able to understand why you can’t leave the past alone?”

“Because they don’t want to admit what they did to me. They don’t want to go to jail and they would if I wanted to go through all of that, but I don’t. I want to move forward but it’s like I have bricks tied around my neck.”

Eli took a deep breath and another and another until she followed suit.

“So can you tell me what they did to you that makes them afraid?”

Kylie, the professional looking young woman in her late twenties pulled up her sleeve and showed him her arms.

Eli leaned forward and though he kept himself from gasping, he drew his breath in quickly. Kylie’s arms were covered in small round scars, dozens of them. Before Eli could say anything, Kylie lifted her poncho and the thin shirt underneath. From her navel to the bottom of her bra were several long, pink scars, one resembling the letter K.

Eli stopped for a moment, deciding how to approach his next question. He knew it could build a bridge or burn one. He waited a moment before saying anything.

She lowered her poncho and smoothed it over her thin frame, eyes on the floor.

“Hmm…I’m sorry you had to experience that, Kylie.” He waited but she wasn’t budging.

“So when we are traumatized, our wounds are often invisible and others, because they can’t see them, don’t know they’re there, or that they’re still there.” Eli was treading carefully still. “But you have these very visible scars and that must be quite difficult for you.”

And then, as often happens in his line of work, Eli was reminded of the bravery of the human spirit.

Kylie, the forlorn, meek mannered woman in front of him sat up tall and looked square at Eli with eyes that seemed to suddenly come alive.

“These scars are just the diary I kept of what they did to me.”

Do you believe in fate?

EXCERPT:
Fall brought cooler weather, and with it, nature’s kaleidoscope of colors. The trees shed their greenery and displayed glorious shades of red, yellow, and orange. You could almost taste the pumpkin spice in the air. It had always been my favorite time of the year, but now I found myself resenting the cooler weather. The change in seasons meant Jesse had to work more for his landscaping job, clearing away fallen branches and leaves before they became hazards for drivers and pedestrians alike. I missed him during the long hours he was away. I tried to make the best of it, though.

Our very active sex life was great inspiration for the hot scenes in my book. We were compatible in the bedroom in so many ways. Neither of us ever shied away from trying new things in bed, and it was fun vying for who would take control. Each time we were together, it was a new experience, an adventure. Finding my sexual equal was both refreshing and liberating.

“I’m under your spell. I don’t know what you’ve done to me, but I just can’t stay away from you.” His words spoke directly to my heart. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach; something I hadn’t felt since I was a teenager. Things with Jesse felt like they were perfect, almost too good to be true. I was a little afraid to pinch myself for fear I’d wake up and find it had all been a dream. I knew I had a history of falling in love too quickly, though, so I was a little afraid of letting myself really relax and let him in. After everything I’d been through, what if I ended up jinxing things?

“If there’s magic involved, I’m consumed by it, too. I feel the exact same way.” Every waking minute, it seemed, my thoughts were on him. I’d remember how I felt when he’d hold me, when he kissed me. When I was alone, my thoughts traveled to his gentle touches and caresses when we’d make love. When we were apart, time couldn’t seem to move fast enough until we could be back in each other’s arms, and that thought was terrifying. I loved and I feared my body and mind’s reactions to him. He made me vulnerable. He made me hope. We were headed for the kind of love you only see in romance novels, but I knew I was giving him the power to crush me if he chose. Love was always a risk, but the reward was worth it if you found the right one. I’d just never dared to dream that it could happen to me.

“When I get off work, I want to take you somewhere.”

“Oh? Where are we going?”

“Hmm… well, I could tell you, but I think it would be more fun to surprise you.”

I giggled. “Give me a hint?”

“Nope.”

I stuck my lower lip out, though I knew he couldn’t see it over the phone. “Come on! You have all this work stuff keeping you busy all day, but now I won’t be able to write because I’ll be crazy with curiosity.”

“You know, you’re adorable when you pout.” I could hear his smile through the phone. “Bring a sweater. I have to go, Babe. See you soon.”
