I sped away on Zif, imagining Angel watching until I was out of sight. I did not get far, however, before my body started shaking uncontrollably, Zif began weaving over the center line, and my vision blurred. I had to stop. Trembling, my breath coming in shallow gasps, I cut the engine and rolled Zif into a patch of woods that I hoped would shield me from the road.

In the gray light of a cold dawn, I sat down on wet leaves, drew up my knees, and hugged myself as tightly as I could. The shaking grew worse. I felt the oxygen mask clamped on my face, reliving every moment of paralysis that put me right on the line between life and death.

I vomited onto the forest floor, then closed my eyes and tried to regulate my breathing. I saw myself hovering above my body splayed on the bed in the shack, unable to move, utterly helpless. The urge to lie down on the cold ground and fall sleep nearly overtook me, as shock worked me over. Though seated, I felt my body begin to sway.

I could have died.

Secrets are cruel challenges.

Especially a secret God gave Sandra that not even He can accept and refuses to tolerate. Sandra is a Mormon girl, but this story is not about Mormons. It is about an explosive secret, racial bigotry, superstition, and bias toward uncommon people-a mixture with the power to transform humanity.

Humorous, thoughtful, sensual, and a gripping page-turner to the end, Sandra’s Syndrome gives readers a beloved heroine at a time when humankind needs one like never before. June 8, 1978, a historic date for an entire church that attempted to end racism. For Sandra, it was the first day of battle to end separation and segregation for all special children of God … and you won’t believe the miraculous conclusion.

A love story of true-life fiction.

Preamble

It is easy to take over from those

who have not thought ahead.

– LI QUAN (GENERAL)

“In the beginning . . .” The first millisecond of what is mistakenly referenced as the Big Bang, God’s voice, third-person omniscient, was heard. It is the voice that speaks to you now. It speaks throughout this story. God’s narration is its own personality in literature. A character in stories. To guide readers through worthwhile journeys. Is it male or female? You choose.

The voice informs readers. Occasionally, to make a point. The omniscient voice is possessed with emotions, just as you. The voice always intends to share broader considerations. Pertinent sources are footnoted. While reading, challenge the omniscient voice. Conclusions are your own, especially when discussed with other readers. Non-readers of the story are irrelevant; don’t waste your time. Self-inflicted ignorance cannot be praised. Readers expect meaningful endings for those deeply in love—so greatly in love they climb heights never thought achievable.

Please climb. Explore higher elevations. Discover meaningful insights. The love to be felt is a quality unknown to most.

As a gender therapist and mom to a transgender child, Wendy felt there was a strong need in the world to support parents of trans kids. She knew that her own journey was challenging at first, and finding support wasn’t always an easy thing. As she’s been working with transgender people and their parents over the past five years, she’s come to find that the parents are oftentimes scared and feel alone in the process of accepting their child’s
gender identity.

About the Author

As a gender therapist and mom to a transgender child, I felt there was a strong need in the world to support parents of trans kids.

I know that my own journey was challenging at first, and finding support wasn’t always an easy thing. As I’ve been working with transgender people and their parents over the past five years, I’ve come to find that the parents are oftentimes scared and feel alone in the process of accepting their child’s gender identity.

Due to the time constraints of therapy, I wanted to find a way to reach more parents with my own hard-earned strength and wisdom. Writing seemed to be just the right medium to accomplish this goal. Books were one of the main ways that our family got the necessary knowledge to start our gender journey eight years ago. However, there aren’t many books out there that offer both lived/personal and clinical experiences.

I hope that my book can reach parents around the world that are in need of education, support, and encouragement. My overreaching goal is to help trans kids by helping their parents and to be a strong positive force in today’s gender revolution.

EXCERPT

Chapter 1

I know who the killer is.

Juniper Crane’s yawn morphed into a gasp as she watched the masked ripper slash the throat of a young girl, silencing her screams.

Great, I’m never going to be able to sleep now.

The fiftyish woman with flowing brown hair reached for the joint in the Dollywood souvenir ashtray on her nightstand. She relit it and sucked the flame down to her coral-painted nails before returning it to the ashtray. Her exhaled smoke drifted up to the light smog lurking beneath the ceiling of her bedroom – one of the smallest at the Geisterhaus estate.

I need to turn this off. Grabbing the remote next to the ashtray, she instead set the sleep timer for the TV mounted on the wall. As the masked villain chased down another victim, Juniper sunk deeper into the gray flannel sheets of her bed and closed her hazel eyes. The movie’s staccato score tensed her grip on the downy quilt clutched at her neck until the violin flourishes distorted into static.

“What happened?” Juniper unclenched her eyes and saw the screen go blank. “Is the cable out?” The middle of the screen bulged out. “Oh my lord!” She jerked up in bed. “What is that?”

A volleyball-sized sphere of white light bubbled out from the screen and separated from the TV. Dozens of tiny tendrils reached out from the orb at random points along its surface, giving it the appearance of a miniature sun.

Juniper screamed and kicked out of the sheets, backing herself into the headboard.

Her bedroom door burst open, and a dark-haired man in flannel pajamas bolted inside. “Ms. Crane, what’s…” Tommy Addison’s voice trailed off when he saw the reason for her fear. “What the hell is that?”

The orb floated across the room toward the door, and Tommy approached it, extending his hand.

“Tommy, what are you doing?” Juniper jumped off the opposite side of the bed. “Don’t touch it!” Her warning came too late.

Two tendrils reached out to Tommy’s fingertips, and an enormous POP! followed a flash of light.

The force of the explosion shoved Juniper’s back against the wall before dropping her to the floor. Ears ringing, she pushed herself up enough to peek over the bed. It’s gone.

“Tommy?” She rose to her feet and shuffled over the hardwood floors, looking around the room. “Tommy, where are you?”

Once on the other side of the bed, she spotted a body in the hallway just beyond her open bedroom door. “Tommy!”

The man’s body settled into stillness, and his vacant eyes locked onto the ceiling – although Juniper felt them watching her as she rushed to his side.

“No, no, no, no.” Juniper cupped her mouth as tears dripped from her cheeks. She retrieved her phone and called 9-1-1. While imploring the operator for help, she hurried up two flights of stairs to her employer’s closed bedroom door. “Ms. Geister!” Her knuckles thumped against the solid oak. “Ms. Geister, it’s an emergency!” Hearing no response, she turned the copper knob and rushed inside.

“Ms. Geister!” Juniper shook the shoulder of the unresponsive woman lying on her side within the gold bedframe, and yet she didn’t respond. She clicked on the nightstand lamp and pulled the sleeping woman’s shoulder to roll her onto her back.

As Blair Geister’s head turned on the overstuffed pillow, a final breath whistled through her gritted teeth.

EXCERPT

At thirty-two stories, the Godfrey Tower jutted from the Knoxville skyline like a shark fin in the Tennessee River. Unseen through the frameless exterior walls of silvery, reflective glass, a young woman on the twenty-ninth floor sat with a phone held to her ear, pretending to be on a business call as she stared out the floor-to-ceiling window behind her desk. While her colleagues busied themselves on phones or computers at the dozens of cubicles throughout the large, open office space, Angie was not contributing to the organization’s productivity.

If she had looked down and across the street, the attractive brunette would’ve seen the unremarkable roof of the area’s next-tallest building fourteen floors below her. Instead she focused on the unobstructed view of downtown and the hazy, snow-peaked mountains beyond. She imagined herself hiking below the snowline with her new lumbersexual boyfriend and lying with him on a blanket before a tantric campfire. Angie could almost hear the crackling wood, until she realized the sound was coming from behind her.

She turned her chair around to see her boss tapping her desk with his pen. The hoary goat of a man stared her down, his pinched eyes straining to scold her through spotted glasses. “You’re having a rather one-sided conversation.”

Angie held up a silencing finger to her boss and made up something to say to her imaginary caller. “Thank you so much for your feedback, Mr. Watkins. We always appreciate hearing about good customer service, and I’ll be sure to pass along your kudos. Okay. Take care now.” She hung up the phone and greeted her boss with a smile. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t hear what you said.” She mimed a talking mouth with her hand. “He was talking my ear off.”

Mr. Ramsey, however, did not return her smile. In fact, a look of horror sprinted across his face as something behind her snatched his attention. Before Angie could turn around to see what it was, she heard a great shattering, followed by the pelting of glass on her back and right cheek.

A dark-haired man in a brown suit flew through the window headfirst and thudded faceup onto the floor beside her. The impact against the man’s back shoved the air from his lungs. He gurgled as he struggled to regain his breath – although no one could hear it over the screams of Angie and several of her co-workers. Shards of glass protruded from his head and neck, one at the base of an erratic fountain of blood that sprang from his carotid artery.

Angie, now shocked into silence, tore her eyes from the dying man and toward the broken window through which she had daydreamed just a moment earlier. Oblivious to the blood trickling from the small cuts on her own face, she took a step toward the large hole the man’s body had punched into the glass wall. She poked her head outside and looked all around.

Her boss grabbed her and pulled her away from the precarious opening. “Angie, what are you doing? It’s not safe!”

The young woman turned a confused face to him. “Where did he come from?”
