After tragedy strikes the United States Capitol, a new government seizes control backed by an elite army brutally enforcing its new set of laws. Terror rapidly spreads throughout the nation, and then globally, as people fight back to preserve what’s most important to them . . . their freedom and their beliefs.

One puppet master holds the strings with two distinct objectives in mind: destroy the Christian population and obtain immortality for himself and his loyal followers.

To locate what he covets most, a motley cast of felons is hand-selected and sent to a remote island facility. Pooling their talents and resources, the group of ex-cons must find one of the most elusive, ancient wonders of the world. Or die trying.

But they are not alone on their quest. The map and the key to achieving immortality accompanies the group: teenager Dani Juris. She’s the one person who can help the puppet master reach his prize or prevent him and his army from destroying the world. The power is in her hands. The only glitch is that she’s already dead.

EXCERPT

Chapter 1

A quarter of a mile from the White House in Washington, D.C.,

Vice President Dean Ryzer waited in a discreet location—the

overstocked storage room in the bar of his half-sister Lou Lou—for

his handler to arrive. Nobody would know of this meeting, not even

Lou Lou; he made sure of that. He killed her yesterday. A “Closed

for Renovations” sign was hung on the entrance door that afforded

them all the privacy they would need to complete the transaction.

Normally not a violent man, things had dramatically shifted

in the last year. The VP lived with renewed purpose, and nothing

would interfere with the task he was given. It was a revolution of

sorts in which he played a vital role, although the credit would be

doled on someone else. An unsuspecting pawn who would take

the fall for Ryzer’s genius.

There were several missions concurrently planned, with all

of them intricately balanced upon each other, like a complicated

game of Jenga. But he felt his mission was the most important

piece in the puzzle. Without this next strategic move, all the other

plans would fail.

And they could not fail.

A light rapping at the back door made his heart skip a beat:

three consecutive taps, a pause and then one last tap. The code they

had agreed upon. Vice President Ryzer unlocked the deadbolt and

ushered in a tall woman with a floral-patterned shawl draped like

a cowl, meant to keep her face obscured. But once the door was

closed and the lock reengaged, she unravelled the cloth, revealing

a f lawless, cream-coloured complexion, and blond hair scraped

back into an austere bun taut enough to pull the wrinkles smooth

around her stone-cold blue eyes.

Through plump lips coated in blood red lipstick, the woman

greeted the VP and took a seat by a tower of liquor boxes. He

stood awkwardly in front of her. Not only her beauty caused him

to feel inferior, but her demeanour and level of power within the

organization reminded him that he was less important than he

had foolishly deigned to think, and if one tiny error occurred, he

would be squashed beneath her Louboutins with zero remorse.

Someone else would swiftly take his place.

“Do you have the money?” the VP asked. He remained standing

in the vain attempt to puff up his stature, looking down his nose at

her for a change, at least in a physical sense. The woman was cruel

and bitter, even before they “changed”—a friend of her father’s,

he had known her for years, witnessed many a tirade—yet it was

impossible to deny his attraction for the blond, even though he

feared her. Or perhaps that’s what added to his desire. He wanted

her in the way that a man wants what he can’t have. His handsome,

cleanshaven face, expensive black suit, and silk tie, thick, wavy black

hair perfectly arranged, were all lost on the woman. She couldn’t be

less interested in him. That snake would not be charmed.

She was there for one reason. Complete the mission.

CAN CHOICE EXIST WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF A PROPHECY?

Angelika Juris unexpectedly becomes legal guardian to her sister’s rejected child, Dani… a child with the potential to develop supernatural abilities.

After witnessing a horrific event, Dani develops mental health issues, but is able to overcome her inner turmoil through treatment and her parents’ love. Their lives fall into a comfortable routine filled with dance classes, sleepovers, and video game marathons.

Until the accident.

At the age of thirteen, Dani is involved in a tragic highway disaster, and as a result of her injuries, her powers manifest. Afraid to tell her parents about her newfound abilities, and even more afraid of harming them, Dani is lured away to find her estranged mutant brothers, seeking answers about her origins and how to control her new power.

Guided by an amulet and map—a gift sent from her brother, Tomas Scholz—Dani embarks on an adventure where she meets a young boy, Jonathan. He is lost, with no memories of his identity, his family, or his home. With nowhere else to turn, Jonathan joins Dani on her quest, and together they battle pirates, the undead, and finally, her evil family—a family that is a far cry from what she expected.

Will Dani deny her destiny and resist the evil plans of her siblings, or will she succumb to her role in fulfilling the prophecy—being the path and the key—that ends in the fall of mankind?

Excerpt

Agent Markus Drake assisted Dani and Jonathan to their portside seats inside the pilothouse. The driver then tossed them a couple of life jackets, before taking his seat at the helm.

The boat edged away from the dock, the engine on low. Rob waited tall and stoic on the dock until they pulled fully away. Dani watched him through the window, shrinking down until he was a tiny doll‑sized man and then tiny zombie dolls came running at him, charging onto the dock. The shots from Rob’s gun echoed across the water. The tiny zombie dolls flew backward one after the other. And then she couldn’t see the island anymore. Water surrounded them.

Turning back to face the front of the boat, she yelled over the sound of the motor at Agent Drake, “How long until we reach the mainland?” She assumed the patrol boat would cover the distance much faster than the barge had travelled.

“A few hours. There are some apples and sandwiches in the cooler.” He pointed under their seat. “Help yourselves.”

Dani wasn’t all that hungry, not after the carnage they had just witnessed. But, surprisingly, Jonathan grabbed himself a sandwich and devoured it in four bites.

Dani couldn’t help being pissed off. All the effort of getting her and Jonathan this far…wasted. Now they were retracing their steps, returning home. And then what? Her parents would be fuming, probably never trust her again. She would be punished, grounded forever, no longer able to venture anywhere on her own. And they would continue to keep the truth from her, who her biological father and brothers were, and where her brothers now lived…why she wasn’t allowed to see them. Now she would never meet her brothers or learn to control her power.

She couldn’t help wishing there was still a way for her to get there…to Mount Hekla…which wasn’t too far away from them but was quickly receding into the distance with each passing minute. This boat, although quite large, sped through the water with astonishing velocity. The time to turn around was slim, and the handsome driver with shoulder‑length brown hair, wearing Ray Bans and a military-style jacket, was uncommunicative. He was doing his job, escorting the kids back where he was ordered to and that was that. Convincing him to change course would be impossible.

If only Dani could get control of the boat. Then she could turn it around and steer in the opposite direction, where she thought Mount Hekla was located. Of course, that was crazy thinking. She couldn’t drive a boat, and she had no way to know for certain how to reach the active volcano. Resigned, she settled back into her chair, the oversized fluorescent orange lifejacket she wore rubbing uncomfortably against her chin.

A bang on the stern side hull of the boat caused the deck to vibrate beneath their feet, gaining Dani’s attention. The driver seemed not to notice; his attention focused forward on steering the large watercraft through the choppy waves. A can of oil rolled across the deck of the boat into Dani’s view through the pilothouse window.

Where did that come from?

Then a loud moan came from directly outside the aft door.

“Jonathan, did you hear that?” she asked the blond boy who was crunching hungrily on a red apple.

Mouth full, he mumbled, “Whot?” Then another moan. This one he heard. Eyes wide, he turned to Dani, choked down his apple and mouthed, “Zombie?”

Excerpt

The next day, Ang was showered and dressed in beige slacks, a white lace blouse and a powderblue scarf by eight oclock in the morning. Not only did she have a funeral to plan, having an appointment with the Lakehead Funeral Home scheduled for later that afternoon, but most importantly, they had their first family therapy appointment at nine o’clock.

“Anthony, time to get up.” Ang nudged the mound of snoring covers as she left the bedroom and crept up the stairs to Dani’s room. The door was ajar.

Strange.

Dani always insisted on sleeping with her door closed. Ang suddenly had an overwhelming sensation that something was wrong. Fear dampened her skin.

“Dani?” she called out before entering the darkened room.

The butterfly comforter was rumpled and thrown aside in a heap. The bed, empty.

“Dani!” Ang hollered, looking around the room and finding it vacant. Sprinting down the hall to the bathroom, she found it, too, was empty.

“Dani!” Ang yelled. Why wasn’t Dani responding? Surely, she could hear her, no matter what part of the house she was in. Frantic now, Ang scrambled back down the stairs, hair on end, muscles tense.

Anthony, hearing his wife’s screams, met her at the base of the stairs.

“It’s Dani. She’s not in her room.” Grabbing Anthony’s forearms, she desperately searched his eyes, “Have you seen her?”

“No, not since last night,” he replied. “Where would she go? She hasn’t left her room in days. Relax Angel, she’s in here somewhere.”

“Or Tomas has her.”

“We can’t jump to conclusions. We’ll find her…don’t worry.”

Together they scoured the upstairs, looking behind sofas, in closets, Anthony even running outside and checking the backyard behind the bushes where Dani had hidden before.

No Dani.

One place remained unsearched. The basement.

Dani would never go down to the basement. The child had been so terrified of Ronnie, it hadn’t even crossed Ang’s mind to look there, but they had run out of other options. Unless Dani had left the house, it was the last place she could be hiding.

Stumbling down the stairs, legs weak from fear, Ang then entered Ronnie’s room. It had been ages since she had gone down there, hadn’t even bothered to clean up after her ever since she discovered Ronnie was using drugs. Denial? Perhaps. Even when the police searched the house, Ang had remained upstairs. She knew eventually she would have come down to pack up her sister’s belongings, but procrastination had set in. The task too difficult to withstand just yet.

She was immediately accosted by the smell of her sister, and although stale and sour it sparked childhood memories…back to times when they were less hateful toward each other.

Ang flicked on the light. She didn’t see Dani at first. A heap of unwashed blankets blocked her view. Then she noticed a little pink slipper poking out. Dani’s foot? Her heart dropped out of her chest.
