Moving on should be easier than this

All is quiet at the newly-opened BlackLeaf Private Investigations Agency, apart from the blame game running amok in Fern and Raven’s minds. Tetchiness is alive and well.

When a local hotel owner calls upon them after a spate of thefts threatens her trade prior to the Summer Fête, Raven is hired as a mystery guest. But before she can even check in, a real case comes knocking.

A particularly disagreeable guest has reported the theft of a painting from her hotel safe, and she insists the rookie investigators find it …quickly. She even tells them who took the painting. Yeah, weird, right?

Confused as to whether it can now count as a legitimate case, Raven and Fern must act like the professional they claim to be. But tracking the culprit down is not so straightforward, drawing them into a much bigger drama involving the painting’s true provenance.

A trip to The Netherlands ensues, uncovering a WWII heroine and a vast network of art fraud, but little do they know a bigger nightmare awaits them back in Framleigh.

Just a Simple Little Painting tests the two young women as wounds of the past continue to inflict harm on their working relationship and, ultimately, their friendship.

What could possibly go wrong?

Fern wants a second chance at a normal life

Following a hit-and-run, she has mastered the art of being invisible from the comfort of her wheelchair.

But it’s time to live again.

Months into a new job, and with a reputation as The Ice Queen, making friends hasn’t been easy.

In fact, she can count the number of them on one finger.

When that friend – Nessa – invites her on a girly holiday in a luxury Portuguese villa, Fern’s first panicked thought is to refuse.

But Nessa is very persuasive, so much so that Fern pulls on her big girl pants and eventually agrees.

Is this her chance to prove the old Fern still exists?

After all, it’s Just a Simple Little Holiday.

What could possibly go wrong?

“To Make the Birds Cry: A Modern Folktale Mystery” by L.S. Fellows

To Make the Birds Cry cover

~~~
In the throes of a mid-life crisis, Joe Finnegan surprises his wife, Rita, with a new house: a dilapidated farmhouse with acres upon acres of vines.
Not one to walk away from a challenge, the couple pack up and head to wine country—in Cornwall. Hard work follows and their savings—and sanity—are tested, if not completely drained. Still, their dream to restore the estate to its former glory grows ever closer.
Until Mother Nature steps in to scupper their plans. Big style.
The worst drought in decades threatens their vines and pretty soon even their survival is in doubt. Seasoned farmers appear to abandon hope, Joe succumbs to depression and, not knowing what to do, Rita attends a meeting to “Survive Summer” at the Village Hall.
One woman, Mrs. Murdle, suggests they summon The Crying Gulls, and Rita, as the newcomer, should make their plea.
To save the family vineyard, she is willing to try anything, but a white feather headdress, a bonfire and a speech to a flock of birds seem beyond crazy.
What was once her husband Joe’s dream is fast becoming a nightmare as the vines dry up as quickly as their savings.
Charged with saving the whole village, she prepares for the weird rituals and sacrifices. But why does she feel she hasn’t heard the whole story about these legendary Gulls?
5/5 Stars!
I’ve been waiting for this sequel since the day I finished book 1, Magic O’clock.
I pre-ordered, joined the blog tour and re-read book 1… twice.
And like Archie Royle’s daughter, I still wasn’t ready. I was caught off-guard not by the depth of emotions, but the sheer weight.
Archie’s death is no mystery or plot twist. The author laid it right out there in the blurb. You know it will happen.
Just as Archie’s family knew the end was approaching. And as his youngest daughter resigned herself to that fact when she had to place him in a skilled care facility.
But it was with a broken heart she, at last, accepted it as pneumonia joined the Dementia in taking him farther away from her. However, as prepared as she was, losing him takes her to her knees… and I was right there with her.
Death sometimes brings out the worst in those left behind. When anger flares, jealousies, slights, and resentments thought long-forgotten get tossed around like a beach ball. The youngest daughter knew she’d committed no offenses against her two older sisters out of spite or otherwise, but she allowed their bad attitudes… until she didn’t, and when she digs her heels in, she goes from her father’s biggest fan to his staunchest advocate. The gloves come off and she holds nothing back. Great scene!
When family and friends gather to say their goodbyes to Archie, his baby girl is surprised at the new insight she gets into the man she thought she knew so well. It comforts her and helps to close the divide between her and her older sisters.
My first tears fell at only 20% into this short read. Where book 1 inspired memories of my own father’s last days, Magical Memories brings to mind memories shared and that had me smiling by 88%.
ANY reader would enjoy Magical Memories, regardless of preferred genre. I highly recommend downloading books 1 and 2 and reading them together. Readers shouldn’t be leery of tags like death and grief because, at its core, Magical Memories isn’t about how Archie Royle died but about how much he was loved.
Enjoy!
Magical Memories
As Archie Royle takes his final breath, three sisters race to say their goodbyes.
Two don’t make it in time.
I do.
And now, it’s all my fault they’re too late.
Despite him having dementia.
Despite them not visiting in over a month.
But I won’t let anger win.
After all, we’re all grieving, aren’t we?
Surely, as a family, we can let bygones be bygones.
It’s what Dad would want. Expect.
It’s what he deserves.
We have so much to be grateful for.
So many fond and magical memories to share.
Archie Royle is a kind, funny, gentle man.
He’s also my dad. My storyteller. My hero.
Except he doesn’t remember my face any more.
His world, these days, doesn’t include me or his family.
Life may have changed for him, but he hasn’t given up on life.
Not at all.
It’s just different.
Dad still tells his stories, albeit for a new audience.
He makes people smile and chuckle. As he always did.
He’s a fighter, a survivor and maybe sometimes too clever for his own good! He’ll surprise you. I can assure you of that.
Welcome to Magic O’Clock, where time is irrelevant and hope is unlimited.
Author Bio – Despite being born in England, my heart now lies in Spain. Many moons ago, I was a student in Granada, Spain. I loved it so much and swore I would return one day on a more permanent basis. In 2003, I did just that.
Now, as a fur-mum to two adorable but mischievous mutts, in my free time I can usually be spotted with my nose in a book, armed with just the teeniest chunk of chocolate and a zillion pomegranates!
Sunday’s Scraps – They called me Susan
Lynne Fellows calls these ‘Sunday Scraps’ but I see great story outlines! Check it out! 😉
sundays-scraps-4.png
Week Four of Sunday’s Scraps originates from a prompt in a short story writing competition. The idea was to create a story that contained the elements of tragedy without any of the characters dying; past, present, or future. It was a foray into a world beset with sadness. Whether I pulled it off it is not for me to say, and certainly this snippet will not provide the answer either. This is merely an introduction to the path the story ended up taking. So, without further ado – any excuse to use that phrase! 😉 – here we go!
Sunday’s Scraps – The Dream Builder
Another good start from Lynne Fellows!
sundays-scraps-1
Week Two of Sunday’s Scraps and this is a complete shift for me, which is probably why it remains unfinished …
Anyway, I wouldn’t want to keep you from your Easter celebrations so will jump right in with this one. As always, these stories remain unedited and subject to typos, mixed POVs and a tendency to luxuriate in description (or ramble on, you might say)
5/5 Stars!
The victim of a hit-and-run accident, Fern Mortimer now lives her life in a wheelchair. The former social butterfly has shunned friendships and close ties since a careless driver changed her life five years ago.
Fern has no qualms about re-entering the workforce. It’s dealing with people on a personal level she’s leery of.
Dubbing her ‘The Ice Queen’, friendships are slow to form with her new coworkers, all except perky Nessa Sullivan, who’s bound and determined to be Fern’s friend.
Reader Alert! – That is a CLUE! Pay attention!
When a buddy backs out of a planned girls’ holiday, Nessa badgers Fern to take her place so the others don’t lose their deposits and for Fern to get out and have some fun.
It’s anything but fun when the five young women are together for the first time. Nessa hasn’t shared any info about Fern with her friends about Fern’s wheelchair… or frosty attitude.
The group slips into a not-too-antagonistic friendship and the holiday proceeds.
I thought I knew where this story was headed but I was waaaay off course!
The attention of a handsome restaurant manager brightens Fern’s mood during the vacation. But everyone is not who they claim to be, and the group is frantic to find Fern when she disappears and her wheelchair is found at the bottom of the pool.
The mystery of Fern’s disappearance takes a malevolent turn when identities and motives are revealed.
As Fern attempts to restart her life, someone with a grudge is out to end it.
The Fifth Wheel is the prequel to the recently released Casualty of Court and that’s where I’m headed next! Grab this quick read to get the captivating backstory and meet me there!
Enjoy!
The Fifth Wheel – A Prequel (The Blackleaf Agency Series Book 0)
by L S Fellows
Genre: International Mystery & Crime/Suspense/Literature & Fiction/Short Story
99¢ at time of posting!
Fern Mortimer has mastered the art of being invisible. Since a hit and run accident five years ago left her wheelchair-bound, she has become a recluse in her parents’ home.
After finally venturing back into the real world, she struggles to make friends and trust anyone. Getting the nickname of The Ice Queen at her new place of work does little to build her confidence.
However, one young woman, Nessa Sullivan, sees through Fern’s mask and is determined to be her friend. A mission that only months later sees Fern joining Nessa and three others on a well-deserved and much-needed holiday to the Portuguese Algarve.
During the holiday, Fern is seduced by a handsome restaurant manager, raising her mood and her hopes of a romantic entanglement whilst also robbing her of her usual common sense and sound judgement.
So, why is her wheelchair now lying capsized in the infinity pool and a body is spotted out at sea? Where is Fern Mortimer?
Check out ‘All That Glitters’ and encourage Lynne to keep it going! 👍😉
Now that I’ve cleared one hurdle – getting Casualty of Court to the finishing line, or rather the publishing line – I’ve been thinking what next to do.
It’s only been a few days, I hear you yell (you did, right? Otherwise those voices in my head are somewhat disconcerting!)
Although I’m ploughing on with the next in The Blackleaf Agency Series, as well as the follow-up to Magic O’Clock, I decided to take a look back at some stories I started but didn’t pursue, for whatever reason.
