5/5 Stars!

Author K.J. McGillick has one speed… fast! And that’s how this reads begins when a gun-running deal goes awry and a two-year-old girl is shot and left for dead.

Fast-forward thirty years and that little girl is now Abigail Cooke, arts law attorney. Though a good family adopted Abby, she’s still always been at odds with her past, wondering why her family left her to die and why they never looked for her.

When a young woman is found murdered in South Boston, government records identify her as Abby. However, when Abby is found alive, further investigating by the FBI proves the dead woman to be Abby’s biological twin, Aisling Dolan.

This information leads Abby on an international journey to find her family and find out why she was abandoned. What she finds is a family enmeshed in international art forgeries/thefts, human trafficking, and murder.

As each person Abby seeks out ends up murdered, she’s suddenly a person of interest, and she doesn’t know why. She wrongly believes if she finds the paintings and returns them to the rightful owner, he’ll be satisfied and she can continue to sort out her tragic past and find a living connection between her and Aisling. But Abby is wrong. He wants the paintings, and he wants her dead.

A strong, solid plot and a likable protagonist made this an enjoyable read that kept me turning pages. Abby Clarke is equal parts a business professional, a take-no-prisoners heroine, and a broken little girl. While she is a successful professional, it’s the broken little girl which keeps her from enjoying a full life.

Fortunately, Abby has the ultimate support network in Maura, a psychiatrist and her lifelong best friend, Edna, her personal assistant, and her grandma Stasha—all three equally strong women who didn’t back down from anything. I have no problem imagining Edna and Stasha opening a detective agency! Those two! HA!

Trying to keep straight the good guys from the bad guys kept me confused right up to the end… and what an ending! This appears to be a standalone read, but I wouldn’t mind reading more about Abby and her crew… and what happens between her and Alessandro.

Enjoy!

After a thorough investigation, the case was eventually designated to the cold case files until Abigail Clarke, now an astraphobic art law attorney, is mistaken for the murdered twin sister she never knew existed.

#BookReview “Spider Hunting (A Conspiracy of Betrayal, Book 2)” by K.J. McGillick

Title: Spider Hunting

Series: A Conspiracy of Betrayal
Author: K.J. McGillick
Genre: Legal Mystery/Thriller
Release Date: August 22, 2020

~~~
5/5 Stars!
Book 2 of the A Conspiracy of Betrayal series introduces another savvy young attorney whose life is upended simply for doing her job.
When Drew Bradley, a partner in the law firm she works for, is murdered on a New York street, senior associate, Asia Blythe, is assigned some of his high-profile cases, but given few details and little access to case files. She’s also offered her dream, the opportunity to buy-in as a partner, but as she delves deeper into Drew’s cases, Asia is torn between accepting the offer and completing the mysterious cases that hint at illegal activities and international crime.
Assisted by the firm’s private investigator—and love interest—Sam Flynn, Asia seeks only to protect the firm… and her career. But when Sam reaches out to a friend for help with the international aspects of the case, we meet global security expert, Jaxon Brandt, again from book 1. He gets involved because the shadowy Grigory Petrov is one of Asia’s new clients.
Asia doesn’t see a way out of the dangerous web they have pulled her into, but when an attempt is made on her life, she’s shaken but determined to see the case through no matter where it leads.
Good writing, an intricate plot, and strong characters made this a one-sitting read. Asia is tenacious and confident, and she and Sam have good chemistry, but my special nod goes to Sylvia, Asia’s administrative assistant, who comes off as a gossip but in fact, finds out the info she needs to watch Asia’s back.
With cases involving cryptocurrency, biological weapons, and DNA manipulation, Spider Hunting is a fast-paced, smart, legal thriller. Reading book one first isn’t necessary to enjoy book two, but I recommend it to understand the full global reach of the bad actors involved.
Enjoy!
It’s never what it seems.
A murder of a high-profile law partner on a Manhattan street should have made the front page of the news. And yet it didn’t. Drew Bradley’s murder was treated as just another senseless crime and relegated to page four of the evening edition. But what if the press had been privy to the fact that the murder was actually an assassination?
As the partners at Lannister and Stewart scramble to fill the vacuum left by Drew Bradley’s sudden death, Asia Blythe, a rising star in the firm is offered his coveted position. But this golden opportunity that brings with it power, prestige, and unlimited financial rewards demands adherence to a code. A code of allegiance to the firm with no exceptions. Catapulted into the world of genetically modified designer babies and state-sponsored espionage, is Asia prepared to deal with the intrigues of a world that will threaten her life and shatter her illusions?
5/5 Stars!
When family-law attorney Kate O’Brien gets bum-rushed into handling a bail hearing by her business partner, her life spirals out of control.
She’s pulled deeper into a criminal case with a disoriented defendant charged with murder as her partner, Bill Brown, appears to be distancing himself and avoiding her.
When the ugly truth is revealed, Kate finds out she’s not only been Bill’s unwitting pawn and the “name on the dotted line” for his illegal activities but now she must allow herself to be used again to stay out of jail… and alive.
Spider Games is great slow-build suspense. This author knows how to pull readers in and keep them on the edge of their seats. Each chapter delivered a nugget of clarity… and a bucket of questions. Every time I thought my eyebrows couldn’t possibly go any higher, I swiped the page and find out I was wrong!
Kate O’Brien is tenacious and committed to her profession. She’s slowly building a name for herself in the legal community and is grateful to Bill Brown for taking her into the business after a disastrous end to a relationship caused Kate to flee for safety, peace of mind and a fresh start. It’s her gratitude to Bill and inability to trust anyone else that leads Kate to put blinders on and make her an easy mark for Bill, because even as his list of offenses grows, she still considers that he could have been “caught up” in something and defends him to authorities. It’s more than apparent to everyone Bill Brown is not a nice guy and a major player in illegal activities that span the globe… and implicate Kate, but she’s more concerned that Bill has adequate legal representation.
(Insert dramatic eye-roll and Kindle-flinging moment.)
I didn’t like Kate O’Brien. There. I said it.
I admired her focus and passion for her clients. She’s a sharp attorney. She just isn’t very smart. As I passed the story’s midpoint, the only thing higher than my eyebrows was the number of bad decisions Kate made. With attempts on her life, federal agents who aren’t convinced of her innocence and the threat of prison hanging over her, for me, it took Kate too long to appreciate the gravity of her situation.
But every flawed protagonist must have a savior, and thank goodness for Norma Wilkie, legal assistant/paralegal, extraordinaire! The sixty-year-old is savvy, sharp, AND smart… and just the person Kate needs at her side as she tries to navigate the hell her life has become.
Everyone has secrets in Spider Games, Norma included, and as Kate tries to figure out what to believe and who to trust, the plot twists go deeper to reveal a conspiracy even the feds didn’t see coming.
While I’m still not on Team Kate, she won my respect near the story’s end with a new attitude and some fancy footwork of her own.
Excellent pacing made this well-written book a page-turner and one-sitting read. I’m more than ready for book two to see where the conspiracy leads, and hopefully, Jaxson Brant and Agent Owens will show up for the party!
Enjoy!
EXCERPT
CHAPTER ONE
Divorce is an ugly business. People come to me with their hearts blown to bits and dreams crushed by their unworthy spouse. I am a fixer.
I have had my share of crazies over the years and accepted that people can turn vicious as their demands for a pound of their spouse’s flesh escalates. Some I could reason with when things cooled down, others, however, went rogue in the quest for personal and oftentimes vigilante justice. That is why in the thick black and red book of statutes titled Domestic Relations, there are hundreds of codified laws that lawyers and the public alike are expected to follow. These statutes are not mere suggestions, they are rules, and I like rules.
I respect the law and make it my mission to work within its framework. That is not to imply I won’t work every angle possible to win. Because isn’t that what the essence of litigation is about? And I love the feel of winning.
People say I am tenacious. They have even called me scrappy and snarky. That’s okay, because when the name Kate O’Brien is spoken, no one doubts the fight will be fair because I play by the designated rules. So, what am I doing sitting in the county jail, talking to a woman accused of murder and clearly inebriated? A belligerent, incoherent woman who already has expressed her unfavorable opinion of me several times.
William Brown, my law partner, that’s why I’m here, caught in this chaos and drama, as a favor to him. He loves the Wild West attitude of the criminal defense bar and plays fast and loose inside and outside of the courtroom. Flashy cars, a small plane, and two lavish houses have come to define him. All this chasing after power and money is something that has been a problem bubbling to the surface over the course of this last year.
Winning acquittal after acquittal has made him a rock star amongst the criminal community. Now they chase after him and not the other way around. He’s clever and charismatic. I have to admit I am not entirely immune from the second quality. Thus, tonight I was far too easily smooth-talked into agreeing to meet with this unlikeable woman, the wife of an old friend. However, I stood my ground and made it clear I was only a pinch hitter who would take a few minutes to talk to her, gather some information, assure her Bill had this in hand and then I was out.
I took a few minutes to take in the woman who sat across from me in the orange jumpsuit. She could easily pass for a high-fashion model, a pampered high-maintenance woman. I had no doubt she routinely and painstakingly exfoliated her flawless skin, and even after passing out drunk for God knows how long, her hair was still perfectly coifed. Although her makeup had smudged under her eyes, it just gave it a more smoky, smoldering look somewhat sexy, as opposed to your rabid raccoon look that I was known to sport after an hour at the gym.
Right now, no one knew her side of the story. It had taken the last twenty-four hours for her to become even slightly coherent, and the police realized that taking a statement from someone so blitzed would not hold up in court. After a trip to the hospital to assess her medical condition, her body was infused intravenously with a liter of fluid. The emergency room physician declared it was unnecessary, but her husband, an obnoxious and verbally abusive surgeon, insisted on it. When she was finally cleared as medically stable, the police arrested and transported her to the county jail, where she remained asleep until roused and marched to the attorney-client area. Now she was mine.
 “I remember waking up on the floor and he was just lying there,” Alexis Mayhew whispered. Her breath smelled minty; she must have just brushed her teeth. Thank God. After reading the police report which detailed what happened on the way to the hospital in the ambulance, I prepared myself for vomit breath and a woman who likely had rolled in it.
“Nothing more?” I asked. “Who is the man they found in your home? How did he get in?”
She shrugged and offered nothing further.
“Do you know him?” I asked.
She shook her head and then lowered it to rest her forehead on her outstretched arms.
The preliminary police report had only cataloged the physical aspects of the scene and drew no conclusions. There did not appear to be a struggle, nothing disturbed, broken, or upended from its place. However, the state of the victim and Mrs. Mayhew was another matter altogether. The first officer to respond described the smell of alcohol from Mrs. Mayhew to be overwhelming, and when he asked if someone hurt her, all she did was mumble incoherently. As the paramedics attempted to assess her, she splashed them with her projectile vomiting which didn’t stop until she arrived at the hospital. No one likes a sloppy drunk. And that is how they treated her—like a woman who drank too much, went off the rails, and killed someone.
Thank you for stopping by Nesie’s Place today, Kathy!
Your latest release is book two in the thriller trilogy, A Path to Deception. What inspired the trilogy?
Two is actually the second part of my first trilogy when I started writing. The inspiration to write a book came from wanting to leave a legacy for my grandchildren and the subject of art as vehicle to launder money has always fascinated me.
 How did you arrive at the title?
MindGames and Murder refers to how Isabella’s husband was playing MindGames, Gaslighting her to drive her t6o a breakdown so he could take over her art gallery.
 The blurbs say they’re standalone reads, but are they connected in any way?
Yes. They all revolve around how art was used to fund a terrorist attack on Westminster, Notre Dame and the Vatican. Book one (THREE) introduces how the art is forged and the money launder starting in the US -and the last page there is a simultaneous attack on all 3 churches. Book two (TWO) takes us the Paris where the backstory of how the attack occurs in Paris. Book Three (ONE) ties up the trilogy and explains how the funding for the terrorist attacks also had a dual role, in addition to the attacks also had planted the seeds to implode world economies. THREE, TWO, ONE, BOOM!
 Can you tell us about one of the stories?
Book TWO- MindGames and Murder
Isabella Armond is an ordinary Parisian woman with a comfortable life — until a shocking discovery shatters her perfect world. As her husband’s behavior becomes increasingly unstable, Isabella slowly realizes all the signs point to the fact he is not who he appears to be. Is he a respected Cardio-thoracic surgeon with a thriving Paris medical practice helping people? Or is he leading a double life which involves the international trafficking of black market organs? Greed, blood money, and psychopath are the terms she learns are associated with a man she thought she knew.
Do you have a favorite character from the trilogy?
Mary, the 90 year old investigator
Duality cover
Two sides of the same coin. Completely alike. Completely different.
What started out as a normal art restoration project for Melinda Martin soon took on a life of its own. Could this unusual painting actually be a Botticelli masterpiece thought to have perished as part of Savonarola’s Bonfire of the Vanities? Had Melinda’s friend, Lana, a well-known art picker inadvertently acquired stolen art; art that might have ties to the occult and worth millions? Did a bad business decision endanger everyone who touched this potential treasure?
When the painting disappears and both women are found dead, the police think it’s an open and shut case. The husband – it’s always the husband. He had means, motive, and opportunity, and acted strangely cold after the fact.
Is it a case of mistaken identity? Does a secret relationship put Mr. Martin in the crosshairs of an assassin sent to retrieve the painting? Or is he really a sociopath forger with mysterious ties to the Vatican?
