Blurb

When Adrian Carter followed his wife, Agnes, to their dream home in North Berwick he had no idea it was to be the start of a truly terrifying journey.

Every old house has its folklore and stories so he was told. He hadn’t expected those stories to be true. As a horror writer, Adrian had a terrific imagination, but even he could not envisage what was to come.

Tracie Podger, a multi-genre author, wrote this ghostly tale initially as part of an anthology. But she just couldn’t keep it short enough so released The Last Witch as a novella.

Witches and ghosts, dunking stools, and old houses combine in this entertaining tale of the goings-on at North Berwick House.

Chapter One – 1951

“I think it’s safe to say your client is certifiably mad,” Doctor Matthews said as he and Jacob stared through a glass window into a bare room.

Jacob Wellbeing had been set the task to defend Adrian Carter who was presently rocking in a corner of a padded cell whilst waiting for a verdict in a murder charge to be delivered. Jacob believed he had successfully claimed insanity and after all the evidence had been presented, it would be a surprise if the jury decided otherwise. The guy was clearly nuts. Jacob and Doctor Matthews could hear the mumbles and the reciting of what Adrian had done. There was no doubt he had murdered but his account of it was baffling.

It had all started with the purchase of what was to be a forever home…

The dead have stories to tell. Are you listening?

On a sunny August morning, in 1935, thirteen-year-old Sophia Gray finds her friend, Rosemary wandering in the woods. Rosemary’s yellow dress is tattered and stained, she walks with a strange lurch, and her eyes are vacant and glassy. She beckons to Sophia, desperate to show her something, and Sophia follows.
In an abandoned cabin, beneath a tattered blanket, Sophia discovers Rosemary’s body.
It was not Rosemary who led her there, but Rosemary’s ghost.

Step into the Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane

Twenty years after Sophia discovers Rosemary’s body, she finds herself trapped in the sprawling, and eerily beautiful, Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane, in the hands of a malevolent doctor who preys on patients who exhibit paranormal abilities.

Sometimes the dead don’t rest

In present day 1965, Hattie, much like her mother, thirty years before, is led by a ghost. A newspaper hidden in an attic reveals a secret that has shaped the lives of Hattie and her siblings. Hattie with her sister, Jude, embark on a crusade to remedy the wrongs of the past and discover the tale of deception that stole their mother a decade before.

Hattie and Jude are in a race against time to discover a murderer and save their mother from a horrific fate.

Get lost in a uniquely chilling story that spans the life of a family and the ghosts who haunt them.

3/5 Stars

Interesting premise.

A wife secures a promise from her husband to never remarry in the event of her death. He agrees just to calm her fears and move away from the morbid subject.

Then she dies.

He remarries.

And Ghost-wife doesn’t like it one bit.

Theo Stanyer doesn’t believe in ghosts, but his new wife, Sheena, is insistent the spirit of his first wife, Tish, is terrorizing her.

Could it be true?

My first thought was how selfish of Tish to want her marriage to extend past till death do us part, instead of wanting her husband to be happy… even if it meant remarrying. But it’s hard to work up any sympathy for wife #2–the slovenly Sheena, when her crude, vindictive character and determination to keep her hooks in Theo are revealed.

Theo’s a decent man who lost the love of his life then dedicated a decade to raising his two children alone. Now they’re finding their own paths in life, he wants to move on from mourning and be happy again.

Not bloody likely when he’s caught between two mean wives, one alive… and the other not so much.

Unique characterizations of both wives–while they’re polar opposites, Tish and Sheena still have much in common, and I found myself only caring about Tish through the memories of Theo and their children, and I never cared about Sheena at all.

Twenty-year-old Saskia still lives at home, has nothing but contempt for her new stepmother, and shows it every chance she gets. Twenty-three-year-old Ross lives with his girlfriend and seldom comes around. Theo feels the loss of his once-close relationship with his children but he’s hopeful Sheena and his children with eventually get along. At first.

The story takes a wild arc as Saskia’s life and journey to love plays out. The back and forth between her story-line and what is happening inside the Stanyer home was a disconnect for me and much of the time it felt like two different stories that only gelled when Theo was in the scene. Even the seance (sans Theo) felt pointless because it only serves to bring the young people together and doesn’t tell us anything new about Tish.

There appears to be a resolution concerning Sheena and happiness in Theo’s future, but will Tish allow it?

As a supernatural read, Whisper to Me is spot on! I was caught up in the malevolent anger of Tish, and the fear, stubbornness and scheming of Sheena. My heart broke for Theo’s frustration and self-doubt. And the bedroom scene where he loses it? Go, Theo!

But weaving Saskia’s love story through the read watered down the main story-line, slowed the pace, stalled the suspense… and didn’t work for me. Her story is a good one, but her extremes from being totally in love to I hate Sheena were exhausting and added nothing to this story. There was a battle of wills in play and I would liked to have seen more of that battle–Tish vs.  Sheena–instead of Saskia and Richie trying to hook up their besties.

The ending is abrupt and resolves little, which means I have to wait for the next book to see if Tish is still behaving badly, and I’m just not sure if I’m invested enough to continue.

Sherrie LoweAuthor Bio I am a divorced mum of two adult sons and nana to three grandchildren, soon to be four. I’ve always had a notion to write but didn’t get round to it seriously until I became ill with M.E in 1995 when I was 40 and was too ill to continue my job as a learning support assistant in a mainstream high school. I was devastated to have to resign from my job, but writing saved my sanity. My first attempt was a memoir, Shadow Across the Sun which covered the loss of my mum to breast cancer two days before my 13th birthday. When the rejections began to flow in from traditional publishers and agencies, I joined a creative writing class and learned to write fiction. Whisper to Me is my 10th novel. I have a strong belief in the afterlife due to events following my mum’s death so most of my stories have some form of supernatural aspect to them.

A story of Family, Rationing and Inconvenient Corpses.

Life in 1918 has brought loss and grief and hardship to the three Fyttleton sisters. Helped only by their grandmother (a failed society belle and expert poacher) and hindered by a difficult suffragette mother, as well as an unruly chicken-stealing dog and a house full of paying-guests, they now have to deal with the worrying news that their late – and unlamented – father may not be dead after all.  And on top of that, there’s a body in the ha-ha.

EXCERPT

Writers in the family & precarious family finances

Margaret Fyttleton aka Mother, who writes dull books about heroines of women’s suffrage, as well as far more profitable sentimental romances about hard-up young women who invariably marry into the peerage. Margaret is reclusive and the family prefer to keep it that way.

I forged a letter from Mother to the bank, and Granny and I arranged for the lodgers’ potential rent money to be paid into an account we had already set up in Granny’s name, when Papa died. Mother has no interest in money apart from its power to buy books, so a sum each month goes into her own account and the rest of it, including her writing income, goes into what we privately call the Family Fighting Fund. Mother rarely engages with the outside world as she lives on a higher plane than the rest of us, which suits us very well. She has no common sense when it comes to money so God forbid she should ever find out what we’re up to!

Granny has a small private income, her sole inheritance from her parents, and twenty pounds a year that was all Grandpapa was able to leave her. That goes into the pot and I contribute as well with our latest source of income, the money I earn from writing adventure serials for boys’ magazines and annuals. This is a deadly secret known only to my sisters and grandmother.

It came about like this. When Bertie was at boarding-school he and I used to send each other parodies of Boys’ Own adventure stories, but a year or so ago I decided to submit them to a magazine. I rewrote them as yarns that might appeal to boys and young men at the Front and was delighted when they paid me. Wondering whether I could find a second income for my stories I contacted Mother’s publisher, using her name; we’re all expert forgers, the Fyttleton girls. Writing as Mother, I explained that Lt Jasper Crombie was a young relative, and would her publisher consider reissuing the stories as books? Happily, her publisher snapped up the stories and the first of Lt Crombie’s efforts had already come out as a short novel last October. The second one, serialised last summer, was due out at the end of April, and I was now three-quarters of the way through the third, which was being serialised as I wrote.

I felt under no compulsion to inform the magazine editor or Mother’s publisher that Jasper and Crombie were two of our hens. They had been named after gamekeepers at our grandmother’s childhood home, a crumbling castle not far from the northern coast of Aberdeenshire. So far, the hens have never complained about their masculine names and Granny had fond memories of the keepers who had taught her the excellent poaching skills that provide us with meat and keep down the rabbits in the park at the Hall. (She had acquired the skills deemed essential for a daughter of the nobility from her mother’s elderly governess who, crippled with rheumatism, had been pensioned off to live at the castle. Sadly, Granny’s shyness was a hindrance in Polite Society so her poaching skills have proved far more useful in our straitened circumstances.)

As soon as Granny and I had the family finances completely under our control, we knew where we stood, and very worrying it was too. It was a good job we had no idea that our lives were soon to be further complicated by murder.

There might be no such thing as werewolves, vampires or ghosts but apparently evil Klowns are real.

Tempest Michaels is once again investigating ridiculous cases that are clearly not even slightly paranormal in nature. However, his daily menu of fun is interrupted by a plague of men dressed in garish outfits. They wear twisted clown make-up as they terrorise the Kent towns and villages with ever escalating and more frequent attacks.

The Klowns should be a case for the police to solve but their leader appears to have a serious beef with Tempest and they are coming for him and anyone that gets in their way. Who are the Klowns? What do they want? And what’s with the ridiculous smiles?

If they were not enough of a nuisance, he has foolishly employed a woman he is utterly besotted by. Trying to ignore Mr Wriggly’s thoughts about what to do with his new colleague, he goes after his silver medal, a girl he lusted after years ago at school, but while Mr Wriggly might not care tuppence about the difference, is Tempest’s heart really in it?

Throw in a demonic possession, a restaurant with ghostly footsteps and some more meddling by his mother, it looks like another entertaining week for Kent’s best Paranormal Investigator.
