#BookTour “A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls” by Katie Mettner

About the Book

Title: A Christmas at Gingerbread Falls

Author: Katie Mettner

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Christmas

Actress Carrie Murray’s films are a Christmas lover’s delight. Filled with twinkling lights, festive carols, and happy endings, they’re the perfect escape from reality. For her and the audience. Then Tinseltown calls.

Braxton Timothy is Hollywood’s biggest action star. Handsome and talented but decidedly on the naughty list, no one can fathom his sudden desire to produce a feel-good Christmas movie—least of all, his no-name co-star.

Alternating between scenes reminiscent of everyone’s favorite made-for-TV movies and unexpected, off-screen chemistry, Gingerbread Falls has surprises in store this holiday season. The question is, will there be enough Christmas magic to convince two imperfect people that they’re perfect for each other?

About the Book

Title: The Captain’s Kidnapped Bride

Author: Abby Rice

Genre: Historical Romance

The last thing Hetty Pritchard ever wanted was a husband. Until a joke-gone-wrong lands her aboard an unfamiliar schooner headed for Jamaica — with the Captain himself snoring in the bunk beside her.

Now a ruined woman, Hetty has no choice but to accept the grouchy mariner’s reluctant solution: a temporary fake “marriage.” Purely for show, of course.

And if navigating a ship-full of men, pulling off a fake relationship with a total stranger, and making her way back home weren’t troubles enough? Add in troubling wisps of ‘second sight.’ And an unexpected simmering attraction to her new, fake husband.

A stand-alone sweet historical with touches of the paranormal, and a heart-tugging HEA ending.

EXCERPT

Beneath me was something I presumed must be a bed. And certainly no featherbed. More like a solid wooden plank wrapped in a thin blanket or two, by the feel of it. My hip issued its own silent howl of protest as I flopped flat on my back again.

My fingers twisted the fabric covering the lower half of my body. A woolen blanket, I guessed by its texture. But a rough and unfamiliar one.

And there was something else peculiar about this already-strange place: the bed itself was moving. An undulating, side-to-side motion, like the steady rocking of a cradle, but with an extra flip thrown in at the end of each pendulum-swing.

Where was I? That thunderclap of pain behind my eyes had receded to a dull ache, but now a tingle of alarm began to well up in my belly. I kicked off the thin covers and pushed my feet toward the edge of the bed. I’d simply take it slower getting up, this time.

Just as I began to push up onto my left elbow again a weight settled across my chest. A warm, heavy, weight. An arm pressed me gently but firmly back against the pillow.

“If your head hurts half as much as mine, you may want to try to sleep a wee bit longer.” The voice was deep and growly. And most definitely male.

EXCERPT

Hector looked at his watch, eight-o-five, now he was late for his meeting. “I have to go. I must speak with Principal Rodriguez.”

From the stairwell, the woman called as she glided up the stairs, “The closet’s just up here, honey.  Besides, I don’t see his car in the parking lot yet.”

She was right. The principal’s parking spot in the lot below remained empty.

“If you just hold this door for me, you can be on your way, and I won’t bother you anymore,” She called down from the top of the stairs.

Hector climbed the stairs and joined her outside a door. Black painted letters on it said DARKROOM.

“It’s just storage now,” she chattered. “The box of colored paper is on a shelf in the back. I’ll hold the door open, and you grab it for me.” She stood firm by the door, not moving to go inside.

Hector decided to get the paper so he could get back to the office and on with his meeting. His hand patted the wall for a light switch. He flicked it on. Only a dim red glow emanated from the back of the closet. He flicked the adjacent switch, and a florescent weakly flickered. Hector shuffled through the small cramped closet. He only saw old camera equipment and film developing chemicals.

“Ma’am, I don’t see a box of paper,” he called to her.

“I know it’s in there! Check under the shelf!” she demanded, her voice taking on a distinct edge.

He didn’t have time to protest. The lights went out; the door clicked shut, and the sudden darkness blinded him. He assumed he was alone in the pitch-black closet when the red light flicked on. A bright flash produced an ear-splitting sound. His thigh burned in intense pain. He grabbed his leg; it was warm and wet. What the… His mind raced. Is this… blood? Hector didn’t have time to form another thought before the second bullet penetrated his skull.

To make matters even more complicated, he has a friend in tow, and the cute hockey player stirs unexpected butterflies in her stomach every time their paths cross.

While Sandy moves heaven and earth to make her party and project come true, it looks as if Thane Griffyn has his own plans to teach her the real meaning of a first kiss…

EXCERPT

I’ve never really been the one who stood out in any crowd, but this afternoon I feel like Megan Fox, ready to take on the world.

“Honey, if that doesn’t pocket you a kiss tonight,” Gina coos as she blows a peck on my cheek at the front door, “I don’t know what will.”

“Thanks!” I tell her, grinning big time, waving goodbye. “See you later at the party!”

As I head home on foot this time, because it’s only a couple of streets anyway, I wonder what kind of impression I’ll make on my guests tonight. Pretty enough for anyone to dare kiss me? Judging from the glances and smirks coming my way from a group of young men while I head home, it’s certainly in the cards.

I can’t wait to hear what Adrian thinks about Gina’s makeover skills. Since I left the keys with him earlier, he should be in my house by now, setting up his sound system for the party. It’s a lot better than what we have and can easily be controlled with his laptop.

Following the laughing voices drifting from the kitchen, I try hard to keep my expectant grin in check. However, the moment I enter, the gazes of all three boys fly to me, and the conversation stops abruptly as if a bomb exploded. Thane spits out the sip of water he just drank in a spray across the kitchen counter. My brother’s chin hits his chest, giving me an ugly view of some munched snacks. And Adrian’s eyes grow as wide as his round lips forming an inaudible, “Whoa.”

Stopped midway by the force of their shocked expressions, I’m not exactly sure if this is the reaction I wanted. While Thane rushes to clean up the mess he made, my brother gathers himself and states around the food in his mouth, “You’re not going to wear this tonight.”

What the hell? He can’t be serious!

“Since when are you in charge of dressing rules in this house?” I fling back, planting my fists on my hips.

“Since Mom asked me to come home and keep an eye on you.” His voice takes on a much sharper edge. “Now change the fuck into one of your decent dresses, or the party’s off.”

My frustrated gaze moves to Adrian, but none of the others seem to want to contradict Cameron right now. What’s wrong with all of them?

My eyes find Thane’s, and I know I’ve lost this battle, because his stunned glare on me borders on cold rage. “Sorry, Sandra,” he growls as he screws the cap back on the water bottle, “but this time your brother’s right.” Totally startling me, he skirts the counter, grabs my hand—none too gently this time—and drags me out of the room.

“Where are you taking me?” I protest when there’s no chance to withstand his pull.

“Upstairs to find you more suitable clothes for tonight. You want to get kissed, not laid.”

Why the hell is he so angry? He’s the last one to get a say in my life. And still, here I am, being hauled into my room by him and wincing as he slams my door shut, cutting us off from the rest of the house. I spin around in front of my bed and cross my arms rebelliously over my chest.

“And now what?” I spit out.

“Now you take those boots off.”

A cynical laugh escapes me. “My boots are none of your business.”

Scowling, Thane takes one stride closer. Two feet away, he folds his arms, mirroring my stance, and arches one eyebrow. “Either you take them off, or I will. You have one second.”

Jesus Christ!

Author Bio

The nitty-gritty:

I’ve been a storyteller all my life, building bridges into different worlds. Already in kindergarten, I’ve seen the most fantastical things and wanted to share them with everyone. My teacher called me a liar back then. Today, I call it the first real flash of my spiritual gift and the cornerstone of my writing career.

When I got older, I’ve had many visions of a perfect career, while writing has always been more of a hobby and kind of a therapy for me when the longing for more magic in this world once again caught up with me in a crushing way. When my first book was finished, I couldn’t even imagine sharing one of my stories with others, ever. In fact, I only got used to the idea while I wrote my second book and learned in a very miraculous way where the many stories in this world really come from.

It’s funny how, at that point, everyone told me I can’t possibly make a living with writing. They even warned me not to quit my job. But after my debut novella PLAY WITH ME came out and sales skyrocketed within the first week, I knew I could do anything I wanted if only I never stopped dreaming.

That’s also part of what I teach my students in writing and spiritual workshops today. Always dream big! If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.

Some personal stuff:

“I’m writing stories because I can’t breathe without.”

Disney is my attitude to life, and if I could I’d save the world from itself. My Patronus is a wolf, my wand the broken twig of an apple tree, 13 ¾ inches with a unicorn hair core. I can’t deny that on some days, I prefer my book characters over real people, but there’s not a single day going by where I wouldn’t try to find magic in reality. And when I’m alone, I love to listen to the many stories of the wind in a mystic mid-summer night.

So you see, I’m lucky enough to live in an enchanting world of my own. It’s peaceful there and full of magical things, fairies and wonders. You’re welcome to follow me there – if you’re ready to open up your mind and leave everything you learned about reality behind. But beware, if you dare to step through this door, you may never want to leave again…

Excerpt

“So, I’m a character in a book?”

“Yes,” said Ellodrine from behind him.

“But I’m not in my book anymore. I’m in your book.”

“That is correct, Joe.”

“Because you’ve got a job for me.”

“You’re our specialist,” said Kribble.

“I’ve got some bad news. I’m not your guy.” Joe turned to face her and gestured to the pile of Joe Slade Mysteries on the floor. “You should go into one of these books here. The early ones. You’ll like that guy better. I like that guy better. He was less defeated. Hadn’t been screwed around so hard. Wasn’t all used up like I am. Still thought he could win and have a happy ending. That’s the guy you want. Not me. And while you’re at it, bring Lily too. She would have loved it here. She loved books. And libraries. Place like this would have blown her mind.”

“I’m afraid that’s not possible, Joe,” said Ellodrine. Her irises deepened to the color of twilight. “We can’t go into just any book. We can only enter current books. Books that are being written right now. We tried. Once books are finished, they’re in the past.”

“So, what’s the point? Why do you need a specialist?”

“We need somebody who can get into the heads of other people and figure out their next moves before they do. We need somebody who can outwit, who can think on his feet, who can be unpredictable enough to keep our enemies guessing.”

Joe snorted. “That’s your job? You figured out you live in some kind of storyland, and you want me to help you win? Forget it. If you really are characters like you say, then you’re bound to come out on top. You don’t need a specialist. You have an author.”

At the word author, Aelrûn’s eyes narrowed, Kribble spat on the floor and Ellodrine’s irises bore a dull red tint.

“You don’t understand, Joe. Our author is the enemy. He is who we must overcome. He’s got all the information. All the advantages. He stops us at every turn. We need you to help us get an edge.”

She held up the book in her hand, open to the back cover. It displayed a picture of a spindly looking man with deep-set eyes and an awkward smile framed by sunken cheeks. Underneath were the words: Howard Zagny.

Excerpt

She leads me down an aisle of books. The aisles are short. I sneer at a tacky paperback entitled The Marquis’s Mistress by Lyla Birdsong that sits crooked on the shelf. The marquis, as pictured on the cover, seems to have difficulty buttoning his shirt all the way, and a perpetual breeze blows through his curly dark hair. The strawberry haired mistress hangs off him in a still frame of passion, her breasts barely contained by her bodice. As we walk, the woman in indigo whispers something under her breath.

All worlds, connected by words

All words, connecting to worlds,

From the dawning of time

Through the end of all days,

Bring us to the Nexus of Words.”

I snort at the ridiculousness of it. It doesn’t even rhyme. Call me old fashioned, but when I hear ominous, occult mantras, I at least expect them to rhyme. I am jarred from my thoughts when we pass a copy of The Marquis’s Mistress by Lyla Birdsong sitting crooked on the shelf. Does the world truly need two copies?

The air is stale and soupy. Guess these old buildings don’t have much ventilation. I feel a tingling in the fillings of my teeth. An electric hum fills the air. My head throbs too, which shouldn’t surprise me since I got ambushed in an alley some hours ago. But there’s something odd about it. Like each throb propels lingering echoes through my skull.

Now I consider we have been walking long enough that we should have come to the end of this short aisle twice over, but we haven’t even made it halfway yet. I look behind me. The front of the bookstore seems farther away than it should be. I look in front of me again. The row of shelves goes on for about fifteen feet. We are still walking at a normal pace. After several

steps, the row of shelves continues to stretch out about fifteen feet in front of us. I look to my left. The marquis’s mistress can barely contain her unbridled passion.

I stop. The air is hard to breathe. My head is reeling. The floor keeps changing directions on me. “Just give me a minute, fellas. I seem to be having a nervous breakdown.”
