About the Book

Title: PLAYING DOCTOR; PART TWO: RESIDENCY: (Blundering along with imposter syndrome)

Author: John Lawrence

Ready to learn how (not) to be a doctor?

Well, neither was John.

John’s adventures in medical training continue with this insightful, often hilarious, self-deprecating medical memoir of bumbling into residency with a severe case of imposter syndrome. This second part in the series brings John’s unique, irreverent and candid med-school storytelling to the world of residency training.

Initially, John penned email blasts while being held captive on-call nights. His descriptions of the escapades, mishaps, disorder, and terror that surrounded his training, led several friends to enquire if he has broken into the hospital pharmacy. Eventually, someone asked to publish the stories, so John replied that he’d write down the whole adventure of becoming a doctor from medical school through residency.

EXCERPT

My very first patient on my very first day in the ER was a young woman with a severe headache. When I entered the room, she was moaning on the exam table with the lights turned off because lights exacerbated her headache. I spoke calmly and quietly to not make her head feel any worse, “Hi Nancy, my name’s John, I’m one of the doctors here today. I understand you have a headache?”

She attempted a brief, small smile for my compassionate efforts, “I’m having the worst headache of my life…feels just like a migraine…,” her smile replaced by a grimace of obvious pain.

That phrase however, worst headache of my life, is a catchphrase that medical students have been trained to respond to like Pavlovian dogs, drooling with excitement (and in my case, fear), because they were the words patients typically used to describe the pain associated with a hemorrhage in their brain.

I did a rapid battery of physical exam tests, and quickly went to discuss this potentially fatal headache with the attending physician.

My attending for the day was a fantastic doctor and great guy: always very relaxed and instructive, who appeared more likely to be crafting micro-brew in the ER office, while lecturing about existential philosophy in between poetry jams, than saving lives. I was very concerned about the patient and just blurted out, “I’d like to order a stat head CT to rule out a subarachnoid hemorrhage for this patient.”

“Stat” sounded kind of cool to say in this, my virgin, and quite emergent, ER case.

The attending appeared nonplussed, awaiting further explanation without any reaction to my urgent use of the word “stat.”

So, I blundered on, “This patient, Nancy Beckstead, twenty-seven-year-old woman, here with a chief complaint of a headache that she describes as… (drum-roll please) the worst headache of her life (dramatic pause… but still no reaction from the attending). Uh…the headache woke her early this morning…”

“Did you say Nancy Bankstead?”

“No. Beckstead.”

“Nancy’s a frequent flier here. Every Saturday. Just don’t give her any narcotic drugs.” And then he went back to casually reading his newspaper.

What? I was shocked. My patient was probably going to die; I wasn’t worried about pain meds—although, I did need a plan to treat her pain because, well, doctors are supposed to help relieve their patient’s pain. But I still needed to figure out what to do.

“So, don’t order that stat CT?” I asked.

The attending shook his head at either my silly re-use of the word stat, or more likely, my inability to grasp that Nancy was a big fat liar.

“No. Tell her to follow up with her doctor this week.”

I sulked out of the office, while the carefree attending turned back to his bagel and morning newspaper, calmly calling out to the nurses’ station, “Barbara, can you pull a recent

DOPL on Miss. Bankstead?”

I returned to Nancy, tiptoeing back inside the dark, quiet room, and politely asked her what medicines she had used for headaches in the past that had helped. Amazingly, all of them happened to be narcotics—the exact same medications I had just been instructed not to give to her.

I suggested a non-narcotic pain medicine.

She was allergic to it.

I suggested a different non-narcotic pain reliever.

Remarkably, she turned out to be allergic to every single non-narcotic pain reliever ever available in the world. I told her about a brand-new pain medicine that did not have the opioid effect of narcotics—but she was allergic to that one too.

Amazing.

Turned out she was a complete medical anomaly, and allergic to every class of pain medication except narcotics. Now what was I going to do? She was in pain, and the only medicines that helped were narcotics.

We were in a serious conundrum. Fortunately, Nancy was quite helpful and forthcoming about telling me that she didn’t even like taking pills, but in the past, when she absolutely needed something for pain, a medicine that she thought sounded something like, “Perk-o-sot?” had worked really well.

And regarding following up with her doctor, unfortunately, he was out of town all week, so her care, her well-being, her only chance of breaking the horrific migraine pain cycle, was left in my caring hands.

I returned to the attending’s office to inform him of Nancy’s allergies, and her doctor being out of town all week. My medical career was now reduced to playing messenger boy and patient envoy.

The attending tossed his newspaper aside, strode back to Nancy’s room, flipped on the lights, and loudly announced, “Hi Nancy, we’re not giving you any narcotics today. Anything else?”

She left the ER two minutes later walking upright, and not appearing to be in any pain.

I was shocked. She had barely been able to lift her head ten minutes before. She had lied right to my face!

Author Bio

John LawrenceJohn Lawrence was born in New York, grew up England, and attended Georgetown University where he told his career advisor that the only thing he did not want to be was a doctor. He subsequently survived medical school and residency training in Utah.

John was not the typical medical student, sneaking out of the hospital whilst on-call to audition for television shows; writing film scripts (also available on Amazon!) and overcoming imposter syndrome. He went on to work as a doctor for 20 years in both traditional western medicine and functional medicine.

John’s varied non-medical resume includes river rafting guide, ski race coach, bagel baker, screenwriter, film director, and expedition doctor climbing Kilimanjaro with Olympic Hall of Fame athlete Chris Waddell.

About the Book

Title: The Captain’s Kidnapped Bride

Author: Abby Rice

Genre: Historical Romance

The last thing Hetty Pritchard ever wanted was a husband. Until a joke-gone-wrong lands her aboard an unfamiliar schooner headed for Jamaica — with the Captain himself snoring in the bunk beside her.

Now a ruined woman, Hetty has no choice but to accept the grouchy mariner’s reluctant solution: a temporary fake “marriage.” Purely for show, of course.

And if navigating a ship-full of men, pulling off a fake relationship with a total stranger, and making her way back home weren’t troubles enough? Add in troubling wisps of ‘second sight.’ And an unexpected simmering attraction to her new, fake husband.

A stand-alone sweet historical with touches of the paranormal, and a heart-tugging HEA ending.

EXCERPT

Beneath me was something I presumed must be a bed. And certainly no featherbed. More like a solid wooden plank wrapped in a thin blanket or two, by the feel of it. My hip issued its own silent howl of protest as I flopped flat on my back again.

My fingers twisted the fabric covering the lower half of my body. A woolen blanket, I guessed by its texture. But a rough and unfamiliar one.

And there was something else peculiar about this already-strange place: the bed itself was moving. An undulating, side-to-side motion, like the steady rocking of a cradle, but with an extra flip thrown in at the end of each pendulum-swing.

Where was I? That thunderclap of pain behind my eyes had receded to a dull ache, but now a tingle of alarm began to well up in my belly. I kicked off the thin covers and pushed my feet toward the edge of the bed. I’d simply take it slower getting up, this time.

Just as I began to push up onto my left elbow again a weight settled across my chest. A warm, heavy, weight. An arm pressed me gently but firmly back against the pillow.

“If your head hurts half as much as mine, you may want to try to sleep a wee bit longer.” The voice was deep and growly. And most definitely male.

EXCERPT

Hector looked at his watch, eight-o-five, now he was late for his meeting. “I have to go. I must speak with Principal Rodriguez.”

From the stairwell, the woman called as she glided up the stairs, “The closet’s just up here, honey.  Besides, I don’t see his car in the parking lot yet.”

She was right. The principal’s parking spot in the lot below remained empty.

“If you just hold this door for me, you can be on your way, and I won’t bother you anymore,” She called down from the top of the stairs.

Hector climbed the stairs and joined her outside a door. Black painted letters on it said DARKROOM.

“It’s just storage now,” she chattered. “The box of colored paper is on a shelf in the back. I’ll hold the door open, and you grab it for me.” She stood firm by the door, not moving to go inside.

Hector decided to get the paper so he could get back to the office and on with his meeting. His hand patted the wall for a light switch. He flicked it on. Only a dim red glow emanated from the back of the closet. He flicked the adjacent switch, and a florescent weakly flickered. Hector shuffled through the small cramped closet. He only saw old camera equipment and film developing chemicals.

“Ma’am, I don’t see a box of paper,” he called to her.

“I know it’s in there! Check under the shelf!” she demanded, her voice taking on a distinct edge.

He didn’t have time to protest. The lights went out; the door clicked shut, and the sudden darkness blinded him. He assumed he was alone in the pitch-black closet when the red light flicked on. A bright flash produced an ear-splitting sound. His thigh burned in intense pain. He grabbed his leg; it was warm and wet. What the… His mind raced. Is this… blood? Hector didn’t have time to form another thought before the second bullet penetrated his skull.

EXCERPT

I’ve never really been the one who stood out in any crowd, but this afternoon I feel like Megan Fox, ready to take on the world.

“Honey, if that doesn’t pocket you a kiss tonight,” Gina coos as she blows a peck on my cheek at the front door, “I don’t know what will.”

“Thanks!” I tell her, grinning big time, waving goodbye. “See you later at the party!”

As I head home on foot this time, because it’s only a couple of streets anyway, I wonder what kind of impression I’ll make on my guests tonight. Pretty enough for anyone to dare kiss me? Judging from the glances and smirks coming my way from a group of young men while I head home, it’s certainly in the cards.

I can’t wait to hear what Adrian thinks about Gina’s makeover skills. Since I left the keys with him earlier, he should be in my house by now, setting up his sound system for the party. It’s a lot better than what we have and can easily be controlled with his laptop.

Following the laughing voices drifting from the kitchen, I try hard to keep my expectant grin in check. However, the moment I enter, the gazes of all three boys fly to me, and the conversation stops abruptly as if a bomb exploded. Thane spits out the sip of water he just drank in a spray across the kitchen counter. My brother’s chin hits his chest, giving me an ugly view of some munched snacks. And Adrian’s eyes grow as wide as his round lips forming an inaudible, “Whoa.”

Stopped midway by the force of their shocked expressions, I’m not exactly sure if this is the reaction I wanted. While Thane rushes to clean up the mess he made, my brother gathers himself and states around the food in his mouth, “You’re not going to wear this tonight.”

What the hell? He can’t be serious!

“Since when are you in charge of dressing rules in this house?” I fling back, planting my fists on my hips.

“Since Mom asked me to come home and keep an eye on you.” His voice takes on a much sharper edge. “Now change the fuck into one of your decent dresses, or the party’s off.”

My frustrated gaze moves to Adrian, but none of the others seem to want to contradict Cameron right now. What’s wrong with all of them?

My eyes find Thane’s, and I know I’ve lost this battle, because his stunned glare on me borders on cold rage. “Sorry, Sandra,” he growls as he screws the cap back on the water bottle, “but this time your brother’s right.” Totally startling me, he skirts the counter, grabs my hand—none too gently this time—and drags me out of the room.

“Where are you taking me?” I protest when there’s no chance to withstand his pull.

“Upstairs to find you more suitable clothes for tonight. You want to get kissed, not laid.”

Why the hell is he so angry? He’s the last one to get a say in my life. And still, here I am, being hauled into my room by him and wincing as he slams my door shut, cutting us off from the rest of the house. I spin around in front of my bed and cross my arms rebelliously over my chest.

“And now what?” I spit out.

“Now you take those boots off.”

A cynical laugh escapes me. “My boots are none of your business.”

Scowling, Thane takes one stride closer. Two feet away, he folds his arms, mirroring my stance, and arches one eyebrow. “Either you take them off, or I will. You have one second.”

Jesus Christ!

Author Bio

The nitty-gritty:

I’ve been a storyteller all my life, building bridges into different worlds. Already in kindergarten, I’ve seen the most fantastical things and wanted to share them with everyone. My teacher called me a liar back then. Today, I call it the first real flash of my spiritual gift and the cornerstone of my writing career.

When I got older, I’ve had many visions of a perfect career, while writing has always been more of a hobby and kind of a therapy for me when the longing for more magic in this world once again caught up with me in a crushing way. When my first book was finished, I couldn’t even imagine sharing one of my stories with others, ever. In fact, I only got used to the idea while I wrote my second book and learned in a very miraculous way where the many stories in this world really come from.

It’s funny how, at that point, everyone told me I can’t possibly make a living with writing. They even warned me not to quit my job. But after my debut novella PLAY WITH ME came out and sales skyrocketed within the first week, I knew I could do anything I wanted if only I never stopped dreaming.

That’s also part of what I teach my students in writing and spiritual workshops today. Always dream big! If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.

Some personal stuff:

“I’m writing stories because I can’t breathe without.”

Disney is my attitude to life, and if I could I’d save the world from itself. My Patronus is a wolf, my wand the broken twig of an apple tree, 13 ¾ inches with a unicorn hair core. I can’t deny that on some days, I prefer my book characters over real people, but there’s not a single day going by where I wouldn’t try to find magic in reality. And when I’m alone, I love to listen to the many stories of the wind in a mystic mid-summer night.

So you see, I’m lucky enough to live in an enchanting world of my own. It’s peaceful there and full of magical things, fairies and wonders. You’re welcome to follow me there – if you’re ready to open up your mind and leave everything you learned about reality behind. But beware, if you dare to step through this door, you may never want to leave again…

Excerpt

“So, I’m a character in a book?”

“Yes,” said Ellodrine from behind him.

“But I’m not in my book anymore. I’m in your book.”

“That is correct, Joe.”

“Because you’ve got a job for me.”

“You’re our specialist,” said Kribble.

“I’ve got some bad news. I’m not your guy.” Joe turned to face her and gestured to the pile of Joe Slade Mysteries on the floor. “You should go into one of these books here. The early ones. You’ll like that guy better. I like that guy better. He was less defeated. Hadn’t been screwed around so hard. Wasn’t all used up like I am. Still thought he could win and have a happy ending. That’s the guy you want. Not me. And while you’re at it, bring Lily too. She would have loved it here. She loved books. And libraries. Place like this would have blown her mind.”

“I’m afraid that’s not possible, Joe,” said Ellodrine. Her irises deepened to the color of twilight. “We can’t go into just any book. We can only enter current books. Books that are being written right now. We tried. Once books are finished, they’re in the past.”

“So, what’s the point? Why do you need a specialist?”

“We need somebody who can get into the heads of other people and figure out their next moves before they do. We need somebody who can outwit, who can think on his feet, who can be unpredictable enough to keep our enemies guessing.”

Joe snorted. “That’s your job? You figured out you live in some kind of storyland, and you want me to help you win? Forget it. If you really are characters like you say, then you’re bound to come out on top. You don’t need a specialist. You have an author.”

At the word author, Aelrûn’s eyes narrowed, Kribble spat on the floor and Ellodrine’s irises bore a dull red tint.

“You don’t understand, Joe. Our author is the enemy. He is who we must overcome. He’s got all the information. All the advantages. He stops us at every turn. We need you to help us get an edge.”

She held up the book in her hand, open to the back cover. It displayed a picture of a spindly looking man with deep-set eyes and an awkward smile framed by sunken cheeks. Underneath were the words: Howard Zagny.
