Allies and Spies, Book 2 of the Unraveling the Veil Trilogy is now available on Kindle.
No major fanfare, no 30-day tour. Phew!
Oh, all right… a little celebration.
Some autumn dahlias…
And low-cal dessert!
(How I wish we could celebrate in person.)
If you missed Book 1, Liars and Thieves, it’s available here.
Allies and Spies
Trust is as thin as a blade’s edge. Secrets abound. And no one is who they seem. Kalann il Drakk, the First of Chaos, makes a bargain with his brethren, in which the future of civilization hangs in the balance.
Thrust together by a sacred oath, a halfbreed goblin, a misfit elf, and a changeling spy unite in an uneasy alliance. But their mission to learn the truth of the strange disappearances must wait—for they owe a blood debt to the changeling queen.
Julian “Lackland” De Portiers is the last good knight in Waldeyn.
Everyone knows he’s a genius… …Everyone knows he’s insane. How does a Hero gracefully retire from the business of saving the world? Perhaps he doesn’t. Once he was young and strong. Once he had companions, fell in love. One terrible night in the forest, everything changed. Who is this lonely man and why did he not quit when he was ahead? Who will rescue the rescuer when darkness falls, and the voices begin?
Julian Lackland is an enduring tale of confusion, sorrow, and triumph.
Behind the Veil, the hordes gather, eager to savage the world. But Kalann il Drakk, First of Chaos, is untroubled by the shimmering wall that holds his beasts at bay. For if he cannot cleanse the land of life, the races will do it for him. All he needs is a spark to light the fire.
Three unlikely allies stand in his way.
A misfit elf plagued by failure—
When Elanalue Windthorn abandons her soldiers to hunt a goblin, she strays into forbidden territory.
A changeling who betrays his home—
Talin Raska is a talented liar, thief, and spy. He makes a fatal mistake—he falls for his mark.
A halfbreed goblin with deadly secrets—
Naj’ar is a loner with a talent he doesn’t understand and cannot control, one that threatens all he holds dear.
When the spark of Chaos ignites, miners go missing. But they won’t be the last to vanish. As the cycles of blame whirl through the Borderland, old animosities flare, accusations break bonds, and war looms.
Three outcasts, thrust into an alliance by fate, by oaths, and the churning gears of calamity, must learn the truth. For they hold the future of their world in their hands.
Probably Elanalue Windthorn, Alue for short. She’s an elf—prideful, entitled, disdainful, almost incapable of seeing her people as flawed. She occasionally does the “poor me” thing too, which is annoying. So… I had to be careful, because I wanted readers to like her. I tried to show that she’s a good person at heart, despite her biases. Throughout the story her opinions are challenged, and she matures. That’s her character arc. She learns some tough truths about herself and her people…it’s a painful process but makes her a more compassionate and just person.
D. Wallace Peach started writing later in life after the kids were grown and a move left her with hours to fill. Years of working in business surrendered to a full-time indulgence in the imaginative world of books, and when she started writing, she was instantly hooked. Diana lives in a log cabin amongst the tall evergreens and emerald moss of Oregon’s rainforest with her husband, two dogs, bats, owls, and the occasional family of coyotes.
