#Feature “Liars and Thieves (Unraveling the Veil, Book 1)” by D. Wallace Peach

Blurb:

Behind the Veil, the hordes gather, eager to savage the world. But Kalann il Drakk, First of Chaos, is untroubled by the shimmering wall that holds his beasts at bay. For if he cannot cleanse the land of life, the races will do it for him. All he needs is a spark to light the fire.

Three unlikely allies stand in his way.

A misfit elf plagued by failure—

When Elanalue Windthorn abandons her soldiers to hunt a goblin, she strays into forbidden territory.

A changeling who betrays his home—

Talin Raska is a talented liar, thief, and spy. He makes a fatal mistake—he falls for his mark.

A halfbreed goblin with deadly secrets—

Naj’ar is a loner with a talent he doesn’t understand and cannot control, one that threatens all he holds dear.

When the spark of Chaos ignites, miners go missing. But they won’t be the last to vanish. As the cycles of blame whirl through the Borderland, old animosities flare, accusations break bonds, and war looms.

Three outcasts, thrust into an alliance by fate, by oaths, and the churning gears of calamity, must learn the truth. For they hold the future of their world in their hands.

Life Lines by Sue Vincent

Beautiful poetry and a great review!

Myths of the Mirror

As we celebrate our dear story-teller, poet, blogger, and wise-woman Sue Vincent, I’d thought I would share my favorite book of her poetry.

Below is a sublimely beautiful poem from its pages, and my review. If you enjoy it, consider picking up a copy for own heart’s enjoyment. ❤

Flowers

by Sue Vincent

There were always flowers.

Orchids pinned upon a mother’s breast,

All lace and diamonds.

Long black gloves

And painted lips,

As she left, laughing.

A child who watched

As the door closed.

*

There were flowers…

Yellow tulips,

Cellophane and ribbon

A girl who blushed

As the curtain fell

Upon the stage;

She cradled them,

A first bouquet.

*

There were flowers,

Roses and lilies

White, in hands and hair,

Their fragrance mingled

With frankincense,

A ghost of awe and wonder

Finding a home

In memory.

*

There were flowers…

Rainbow hued,

Everywhere.

Greeting a life newborn,

Oh, all right… a little celebration.

Some autumn dahlias…

Tasty cocktails…

And low-cal dessert!

(How I wish we could celebrate in person.)

If you missed Book 1, Liars and Thieves, it’s available here.

Allies and Spies

Trust is as thin as a blade’s edge. Secrets abound. And no one is who they seem. Kalann il Drakk, the First of Chaos, makes a bargain with his brethren, in which the future of civilization hangs in the balance.

Thrust together by a sacred oath, a halfbreed goblin, a misfit elf, and a changeling spy unite in an uneasy alliance. But their mission to learn the truth of the strange disappearances must wait—for they owe a blood debt to the changeling queen.

In the Raveen Mountains, the cornerstones…

Q & A with D. Wallace Peach

Which character was the hardest to write?

Probably Elanalue Windthorn, Alue for short. She’s an elf—prideful, entitled, disdainful, almost incapable of seeing her people as flawed. She occasionally does the “poor me” thing too, which is annoying. So… I had to be careful, because I wanted readers to like her. I tried to show that she’s a good person at heart, despite her biases. Throughout the story her opinions are challenged, and she matures. That’s her character arc. She learns some tough truths about herself and her people…it’s a painful process but makes her a more compassionate and just person.

#NewRelease “TRIED & (Still) TRUE: Old Wisdom for a New Generation” by Erik Tyler

cover

~~~
The author of The Best Advice So Far introduces a witty and engaging book that infuses time-tested proverbs with new energy, offers practical strategies for success and happiness to a new generation, and beautifully humanizes the very real people who penned these tidbits of gritty wisdom throughout history. TRIED & (Still) TRUE proves that just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s boring—and that while language, culture and technology may change with time, we as human beings remain much more alike than perhaps we’d thought.
Despite their not having had laser teeth whitening or social media followings or audiences of thousands paying $500 a head to attend conferences in order to hear what they had to say, our grandmothers and great-great-grandpappies (all of whom, mind you, were young and quite hip in their day)… knew stuff.
Important stuff.
They were smart people. Resourceful. Tenacious.
And they’d learned a thing or two about what really matters:
How to live at peace in a war-torn world.
How to stretch a dollar during the worst of times.
How to navigate conflict and to be a good neighbor.
How to have character in the face of trials.
How to be truly happy, come what may.
To modern ears, the speech these old souls used may sound quaint, outdated—even archaic. Yet the wisdom they passed down and the principles for living remain every bit as powerful as they ever were.
