This “Meet the Character Day” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. Hello romance lovers! Today we’re chatting with Vinnie Valentine, the sexy hero from A Deceptive Match by Kelli A. Wilkins.

Q: Greetings, Vinnie. A Deceptive Match is a contemporary romance set in the world of professional wrestling. Can you tell us a bit more about the book?A Deceptive Match cover

I’d be glad to. The action starts right on page one. My boss and devious wrestling promoter, Nick August, has arranged for a reporter named Danny Stone to follow me around for a month and write an “inside story” on the wrestling business. Sounds simple, right?

Well, Nick and I figured Danny was a guy—nope! Imagine our surprise when we learned Danni is short for Danielle. Danni and I travel on the road together and I show her the ropes of the business, so to speak.

Over the course the book we realize we’re attracted to each other and start a relationship. As if that’s not complicated enough, I’m also feuding with an arch rival, facing the biggest wrestling match of my career, and overcoming a severe knee injury. There’s a lot going on in this book.

Tell us about your first meet with Danni. It wasn’t love at first sight, was it?:

Nope, not at all. It was a rocky start, to say the least. Nick August was manipulating Danni (and me) as an opportunity to get publicity for his wrestling organization. He wanted me to make sure Danni wrote a story with a positive spin on the industy. It was my job to keep her away from anything controversial that would give her a negative impression of the business or the wrestlers. Basically Nick wanted me to babysit her, and he threatened that if the story didn’t go well, I’d be fired.

Needless to say, I was resentful of Danni’s intrusion into our world, and even more resentful of Nick putting me in that position. I thought Nick was using Danni to spy on me. I was also worried that her following me around would make me look bad to the other wrestlers and I’d lose their respect. I didn’t want anything to do with her or the story, but my job was at stake.

And Danni wasn’t thrilled with me, either. We were stuck with each other and not happy about it. We were on the road for a month, going from arena to arena and hotel to hotel. We got on each other’s nerves a lot and had our fair share of arguments. I think she called me an arrogant caveman—among other things—at some point.

That’s when I realized I was behaving like “a complete ass” as my best friend Everett would say. Ev set me straight about a lot of things and pointed out the fact that I was acting like a jerk to Danni because I liked her. At the time I refused to believe he was right… but he was.

Wow! When did things change for you? When did you realize you were attracted to each other?

To Danni’s credit, she didn’t take any crap from me. After a few big blowouts, she was ready to abandon the whole story. She was frustrated with the way I was acting and made it clear she wouldn’t be pushed around. That made me respect her, and we started getting along.

After Danni and I cleared the air, we discovered we liked each other, but were fighting our feelings. We both had baggage from bad past relationships and didn’t want to take a risk and get involved.

The night Danni subbed for my valet turned everything around for us. I saw her in a new light. She looked so beautiful that I kissed her in front of the whole world.

Once I kissed her, we realized we wanted to be with each other, but we still had some obstacles to overcome. I won’t go into all the details here, but we both had trust issues. Danni was afraid I’d use her while we were on the road and then forget her. It took some convincing to get her to believe my feelings were sincere. After that, things got a lot hotter for us from there. (Laughs)

Was Danni a wrestling fan before she met you?
Yes, she grew up watching it on TV and going to live matches, but she didn’t understand the behind-the-scenes aspect of the business. I explained everything to her along the way. Danni was a good sport and quickly adapted to the crazy wrestling world. She even played a major role in the pay-per-view storyline. She was my valet (and more) for my big title match and really came through for me when I needed her. And man, can that woman deliver a wicked chair shot!

Do readers need to be wresting fans to enjoy A Deceptive Match?
Nope! Wrestling is the setting or backdrop to the main romance. Kelli wrote the story in a way to help non-wrestling fans understand the moves, terminology, and action. So they won’t be confused or lost.

Kelli says the only difference between A Deceptive Match and other contemporary romances is that the story is about wrestlers instead of more “traditional” characters, like police officers, Navy SEALs, FBI agents etc. She could have written a similar romance about another sport (like hockey or basketball) but she chose wrestling because she’s been a life-long wrestling fan, and it’s what she knows and loves.

Okay, tell us the truth. Are the characters in A Deceptive Match based on real wrestlers?

Nope. Kelli gets asked this all the time, and I’m here to say emphatically none of the characters in the book are based 100% on any one wrestler. Kelli drew upon her years of wrestling knowledge and took bits and pieces of different wrestlers to create the people in the story. I’m based on at least three different people, and Ev is drawn from at least five different guys. Even Nick August isn’t completely based on a famous “billionaire” wrestling promoter and owner. He’s close, but even he’s not 100%.

What do you and Kelli think of wrestling’s popularity these days?

We’re loving it! The wrestling world is getting lots of exposure and is certainly part of popular culture. There has been a recent wave of wrestler biographies, crossover shows featuring wrestlers, and wrestlers guest-starring on reality shows. Maybe we started a trend, because now people want to see behind-the-scenes shows of what goes on in the ring, out of the ring, and what happens backstage that fans never know. It’s an interesting business, for sure.

Kelli wrote another wrestling romance called A Secret Match. Can you tell us about it?

Sure! It’s sort of a sequel to A Deceptive Match. A Secret Match takes place in the same wrestling world with same characters, but the hero is my friend and ex-tag team partner Everett Kinkaid. Ev is my best friend and he is introduced to readers as a secondary character in A Deceptive Match. He plays the role of matchmaker for Danni and me and is a voice of reason when the two of us have troubles in our relationship. He’s also a smartass and a fantastic pro wrestler, but he’s been hiding a big secret from the world.

Kelli fell in love with Ev when she was writing A Deceptive Match and knew Ev needed a book of his own, so she wrote A Secret Match, which focuses on Ev and his secret. A Secret Match is Ev’s own love story. A gay love story. It’s an excellent book filled with drama and action and it’s an emotional roller coaster. I don’t want to give too much away about it. Kelli will be blogging about the book next week and Ev will be here to share his thoughts soon.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you for having me on this blog. I hope romance readers check out A Deceptive Match. It’s got everything a good wrestling storyline needs: heroes, heels, action, drama, humor, betrayal, suspense—and in this case—hot love scenes. It’s really a great story, and it’s one of Kelli’s favorites. I invite readers to catch up on all of Kelli’s romances and visit her on social media. Meet the Character Day: Chatting with Prince Dalton from “A Most Intriguing Temptation” By Kelli A. Wilkins

This “Meet the Character Day” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. In each “Behind the Scenes” blog, I talk about why I wrote the book, share my thoughts on the plot and/or characters, and reveal what I loved most (or least) about writing the book. Hello romance lovers! Today we’re chatting with Prince Dalton, the hero from AMIT LrgA Most Intriguing Temptation by Kelli A. Wilkins.

Q: Greetings, Prince Dalton. A Most Intriguing Temptation is the second book in Kelli’s Royal Desires series of historical/fantasy novels. Can you tell us about the trilogy?
A: Certainly. As readers may already know, A Most Intriguing Temptation is the second story in a trilogy that began with A Most Unusual Princess and concludes with A Most Unfortunate Prince. Although the books are related, each stands alone as an individual read.

A Most Unsual PrincessA Most Unusual Princess introduced readers to Princess Elara and myself. The book brought us together through unusual circumstances. (Elara discussed our interesting first-meet in a previous blog.)

In A Most Intriguing Temptation, I’ve been called away to attend a business meeting with Emperor Salizar. Elara got jealous of the fact I’d be away and surrounded by Salizar’s sultry “kharim” women, so she decided to follow me and her brother, Prince Allan, to the palace. Needless to say, she got into a lot of trouble.A Most Unfortunate prince

A Most Unfortunate Prince (the last book in the series) is all about Allan’s banishment from the kingdom and his journey as he finds true love. Elara and I are also in the story, and we play a central role in the ending.

Q: Tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?

A: I was charged with guarding Elara while she received suitors. Of course, one thing led to another and we ended up falling in love. I’m a very patient and understanding person and it takes a lot to push me to the edge. However, in A Most Intriguing Temptation, Kelli (my author), tested me at every turn.

In this novel, Kelli explored the themes of fidelity and trust. I was sent to a palace full of women whose only function is to satisfy the male visitors’ every wanton need. When Elara learned where I was going, she followed me, and to my surprise, impersonated a “kharim” woman to test me and my loyalty to her. I admit, I was tempted, but when I learned of her deception, I turned the tables on her to teach her a lesson.

Q: What drew you to Elara?

A: Elara is headstrong and intelligent, and she has a sweet and vulnerable side she only shows to me. Of all the people in her life, I’m the one who understands her best and can “manage” her moods and unpredictability. I love her dearly, and yet, at times, she is vexing. As we spent time together, I realized she was putting on a brave front most of the time and I learned not to be swayed by her tantrums or tricks. Elara needs to be treated like an equal, both in and out of the bedroom.

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner? Or where she seduced you?

A: A Most Intriguing Temptation is definitely naughtier than A Most Unusual Princess. We’re not shy about our lovemaking at home, or anywhere. Elara (disguised as Oonish) tried to seduce me everywhere—in the bathtub, in bed, in a hallway… In the book, we made very naughty use of a settee, and later we got frisky on a pile of satin cushions (and we were not alone!). After the story ended, we wanted to recreate the wanton atmosphere of the palace, so Elara and I set up a tent outside to engage in a few wild fantasies. She likes fooling around outside in the dark, and it’s something I look forward too, as well.

Q: Do you sometimes want to strangle your author because of the situations she puts you in?

A: Yes! Kelli put me through several physical and emotional trials in this book. She says it was “for the good of the story” but I would have been content not being tormented, teased, and driven mad with lust on every other page. Kelli thought it was fun and has admitted that creating those scenes was one of the highlights of writing the book.

Q: Tell us more. What was one of the most embarrassing things Kelli did to you in A Most Intriguing Temptation?

A: Throughout most of the book, I’m in a state of sexual frustration. Oonish is at my side every minute of every day, and she’s practically naked. She goes out of her way to tease me, arouse me, and test my loyalty to Elara. And since Oonish is Elara, she knows just what to do to get me hot and bothered. At one point in the story, I get very, very excited and want Oonish so bad… I have a naughty dream about her and… Well, let’s say, my body reacted in a physical way to an extremely erotic dream. It was highly embarrassing to be discovered like that, and I’m not thrilled with Kelli for putting me in that awkward situation. Naturally, Oonish/Elara thought it was funny!

Q: Kelli has written romances in all genres in all heat levels. Does she find the love scenes difficult to write?
A: Not at all. A Most Unusual Princess was a mild book (I believe you’d call it a heat level of 1) and A Most Intriguing Temptation is much hotter (a 2 or 3, depending on your taste) and contains a lot of graphic sexual activities taking place at the palace.

Kelli’s books have different heat levels because she matches the intensity and situations with the characters and plot. She says makes the love scenes as natural and as real for the characters as possible, given the story, the characters’ personalities, motivations, and backgrounds, and what level of intimacy they share.

She admits that sometimes she’ll be writing a scene and the characters “take over” and decide the scene should go a different way, or something she planned on happening changes. (This can happen during regular scenes or love scenes.) Characters can jump off the page and take the story in a different direction. (“Of course we can,” I told her. “This is our story!”)

Kelli confided in me although she thought knew all about her characters before writing A Most Unfortunate Prince, she was surprised to discover a different side to Prince Allan. (I have no idea what that means exactly, but Allan will be here in a few weeks to address his book, so you can ask him.)

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: Although A Most Unusual Princess, A Most Intriguing Temptation, and A Most Unfortunate Prince make up the Royal Desires series, each of our stories stand alone as individual reads. You can start with book 2 and then go back to book 1 to see how everything started, or start with book 3 and go in reverse order. However you read them, I encourage romance lovers to catch up on all of our adventures. I’m content with the way the trilogy ends—but I don’t want to give away the ending. I can say Kelli left all of us in very good places.

I’d like to add that Kelli has written several fantastic books in all genres, not just historical romances. She has contemporary, paranormal, and gay romances that bring incredibly interesting characters to life.

This visit was fun. Thank you for having me. Elara has arranged for Prince Allan to answer a few questions in another chat. Brace yourself, because he’s a wiseass.

Please give a warm welcome to Sam Hixton, the hero from Love, Lies and LLRRedemption by Kelli A. Wilkins. Today we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: Greetings, Sam. Before we get started, could you tell our readers about the book?

Sure, I’m glad to. Love, Lies and Redemption is a full-length novel set on the Nebraska prairie in 1877 and blends a steamy Western romance with mystery and danger. It has a little bit of everything: humor, sadness, and more than a few spicy love scenes. (Grins.)

Q: Tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?

I’m not sure what I did to make Kelli annoyed at me, but the book begins with me shot and half-dead, stumbling across the prairie. I’m at the lowest point in my life then, and I was ready to fall down and not bother to get up. I’m not usually like that; I’m known for being resilient and determined. Once I set my sights on a goal, I go after it. Of course, that’s how I got into that predicament in the first place—but that’s a long story.

I made my way to Cassie Wilcox’s store and she saved my life. Against her better judgment, Cassie allowed me to stay with her until I recovered. When I was back on my feet I felt that I had a debt to pay, and that it was my duty to watch over Cassie. Naturally, this led to lots of conflict between us. And it didn’t help that the townsfolk (and Luke, the sheriff) didn’t trust me because I was a stranger, and I defended Cassie when she needed it.

Cassie brought me back into the land of the living (in more ways than one), although it wasn’t easy for either of us. We both had issues with trusting other people, and ourselves.

Q: What drew you to Cassie? Tell us about her.

Cassie is an amazing woman for our time. When I met her, she was running a general store that had seen better days. The store meant everything to her and she was determined to keep it open, no matter what. Cassie lived in Holloway all her life, and her father used to run the store. After a tragic incident, Cassie inherited the store, but the puritanical townspeople didn’t approve of her independent ways and wanted to drive her out.

I admired Cassie’s strength and perseverance, and discovered that under her seemingly gruff exterior, she was a sensitive woman who longed to be loved. Of course, she refused to admit that, and we had our fair share of spats from the moment we met. (Laughs.) That probably made me love her even more.

Q: What is it about Cassie that makes you crazy in a good way?
Sometimes she’s just so dang headstrong! She’ll get an idea to do something, and off she goes. Of course I’m able to settle her, but that’s because she loves and trusts me. In the book, I have to be the calm voice of reason and tell her to slow down and make a logical plan to do something. Cassie was on her own and had to rely on herself for everything. Now she has me to help her, whether she wants the help or not.

Q: Was there an instant attraction between you?

Oh yes! I was attracted to Cassie from the moment I first woke up—even though she wasn’t very nice to me. Cassie fell for me, too, but she had a hard time admitting it. Part of her didn’t want to get attached because her heart’s been broken before, and she didn’t want to feel vulnerable again.

Q: Do you sometimes want to strangle your writer? What sort of upsetting or embarrassing things did Kelli do to you and Cassie in the book?

I was put through the worst trials and tribulations imaginable before the book started. (I can’t divulge them here, but they were whoppers!) Of course, the troubles from my past resurfaced just as I was settling in and making a new life with Cassie.

Our relationship was nearly destroyed a few times (thanks, Kelli!) due to trust issues (or rather, “lack of trust” issues), and we almost went our separate ways toward the end. It was a very emotional time for me, and I’ll admit, I wasn’t always seen in a good light. But, as in all great romances, Cassie and I do live happily-ever-after.

Q: Describe yourself in four words.

Loyal. Dependable. Funny. Mysterious.

Q: What do you do for a living?

Right now I’m working in a hardware store, and loving it. Why? (Laughs) Nobody’s shooting at me! A long time ago, I used to be a sheriff, and that got me into a lot of trouble. That experience came in handy in the book, but I’m glad to put that violent lifestyle behind me.

Q: What do you fear the most?

I fear what most people fear—losing the people they love. Before I met Cassie I suffered a great personal loss and it took me a very long time to get over it. I nearly lost Cassie a few times in the book, and I was reminded all over again how short and precious life is.

Q: Anything else you want to add?

Love, Lies and Redemption is a great book, if I do say so myself. It’s gotten several excellent reviews and is a perfect way to lose yourself in another place and time. If you like Westerns, you’ll love this story. And if you’ve never read one, now’s your chance.

Kelli has written several other historical romances, but her other two most recent releases are: The Viking’s Witch and Dangerous Indenture. From what I heard, they’re pretty good, too. Lots of action, adventure, mystery, drama, and hot love scenes! I’ve learned that Kelli doesn’t write boring books. She says that although she writes a lot of historical romances, they all take place in different time periods and different places. So, she’s not “just” writing Westerns or “only” writing about a certain century.

Her romances span all genres (contemporary, historical/fantasy, gay, paranormal) and range from mild to super-spicy. I encourage everyone to check out all of her books here: www.amazon.com/author/kelliwilkins or https://www.books2read.com/ap/nkvddR/Kelli-A-Wilkins and read more about them on her site: www.KelliWilkins.com.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with readers. This was fun. I might ask Cassie to visit in an upcoming chat.

Thank you, Sam, for joining us today. Here’s a look at Love, Lies and Redemption:

Love, Lies and Redemption

Shot and left for dead, Sam Hixton stumbles into a general store on the Nebraska prairie and collapses into the arms of Cassie Wilcox.

Cassie’s world is turned upside down when the handsome stranger drops into her life. Sam is another complication she doesn’t need: her business is dying and her trouble with the townspeople is escalating. Yet she’s determined to keep the store open — no matter what the cost.

As Sam recovers from his injuries, he hides the truth about his identity and convinces Cassie to let him work in the store. He’s attracted to her and admires her independent nature, but quickly realizes Cassie’s in way over her head. They fight their growing attraction, and Cassie questions whether she can trust her fragile heart to a mysterious stranger. Will he accept her once he knows about her troubled past?

Cassie resists Sam’s advances and represses her feelings until one fateful night when they give in to their fiery passion. Together, they work out a plan to save the store, but find their efforts are thwarted — and their lives endangered — by the locals.

Sam’s secret returns to haunt him and pulls him away just when Cassie needs him the most. Will he regain her trust when she learns the truth?

Cassie has everything invested in the store — can she save it and find true love with Sam before it’s too late?

Casualty of Court – CeeCee finds her feet

CeeCee’s back…with a new look – and Nessa in the hot seat! 😉

Just 4 My Books

After a tough few days, having engaged in plenty of self-evaluation, CeeCee is ready to get back to work. Replenished by mindful meditation and yoga, she senses a turning point ahead. Gone are the theatrical costumes; today she wears a soft cream jumpsuit with a wide, tan leather belt that matches the scarf holding back her unruly red curls. This is not the CeeCee we know and love, but a business-like young woman with a point to make.

Let’s hope she hasn’t taken this transformation too far.

Whilst, CeeCee has modified her appearance, the room – although muted – still alludes to her earlier self. Back are the chiffon drapes (yellow rather than pink) and the incense sticks (this time emitting a musky scent to restore balance and order), along with soft-lighting giving the room an altogether sunnier feel.

She seems to have a plan in mind.

Nessa arrives, sniffing…

Casualty of Court – Another doubter for CeeCee

Everyone’s giving poor CeeCee such a bad time! 😮

Just 4 My Books

CeeCee has invited us once more to her Inner Sanctum, hoping to have a better experience than the previous one she had with Fern. Still a little upset by the young woman’s abrupt and hurtful comments, she intends to pull out all the stops to impress Raven. She has chosen her outfit with this in mind (chiffon scarves aplenty, harem pants and a sparkly cropped top with a tad too much flesh on show, finished off with a sateen turban studded with an oversized, plastic gemstone)

Unfortunately, CeeCee doesn’t do ‘understated’ and is a founder member of the ‘more is more’ brigade! She has a job on her hands, trust me. Raven is unlikely to be swayed by CeeCee’s colourful and theatrical garb. Still, you can’t blame CeeCee for trying.

Here she comes now.  Brace yourself. Good Luck, CeeCee.

Casualty of Court – CeeCee is in session

L.S. Fellows is doing a great set-up for her upcoming release! Annie Skillset is gone and now we meet CeeCee, the Psychic! Remember to click through and leave the author a like, comment, or both! 😉

Just 4 My Books

After the rather terse interviews conducted by Annie Skillsett, another panelist now takes over.

CeeCee Dedmann is a psychic, clairvoyant and all-round hippy-chick, and she has invited each of the four main characters to either connect with someone from the other side or to look into her Crystal Ball. What will they choose?

As a free spirit, untethered to the physical confines of any building, CeeCee is using Annie’s office. She has adorned the plain desk with swathes of purple silk, pink chiffon drapes cover the window, and snatches of sunlight filter through, dappling the walls. Soft music tinkles, and the heady scent of jasmine wafts throughout from burning incense sticks.

It’s a whole new world! I hope my characters are ready for her.

First up, we have Fern in the hot seat. On arrival, she’s a little wary of the changes made to the office. It’s clear she’s more…

Casualty of Court – Annie interviews Stefan

Annie Skillset takes on Stefan Pariah…er, I mean Pereira! 😄 Did you preorder yet? 😉

Just 4 My Books

Annie’s work here is almost done.

Before she can submit her report to Detective Hugh Dunnitt she has one more candidate to interview.

Stefan Pereira is on his way to her office.

Was that perfume she dabbed on her wrists?

Really, Annie? I thought you were a professional.

She smirks.

Well, I wasn’t expecting that kind of reaction.

***

Aged 28, Stefan is the defendant in the upcoming trial.

After eight months on remand, he’s ready to tell his story. But I must warn you, he’s a ladies’ man. You’ve been warned.

A knock on the door. He’s here.

AS: Come in, Mr Pereira, please take a seat.

(Stefan enters, pulls out a chair and sits, a soft smile forms on his lips)

SP: Thank you, but please, call me Stefan. Mr Pereira is my father. (He tilts his head to one side)

AS: Of course. (Annie giggles. OMG she giggles!

Casualty of Court – Annie interviews Nessa

Nessa’s turn – get ready! Annie Skillset’s got her hands full! 😏

Just 4 My Books

Following her interviews with Fern and Raven, Annie turns her focus to Nessa Sullivan.

Aged 25, Nessa grew up and went to school with Raven in Framleigh. She was responsible for getting Fern to Portugal for that fated holiday. Although initially charged with aiding and abetting her boyfriend, Stefan, in the alleged assault on Fern, those charges were dropped due to lack of evidence against her. But she did make a statement that will be used in the trial.

Can Annie gain any insight into what makes Nessa tick? Let’s find out. Here comes Nessa. With her head bowed like that, she doesn’t look happy about being here. Either that or she’s avoiding someone.

AS: Thank you for coming, Miss Sullivan. I’ll be brief; I’m sure you have other things you’d rather be doing.

(Nessa gives a faint smile and nods)

AS: I see you didn’t return to your job as…

Casualty of Court – Annie interviews Raven

Another interview from Annie Skillset – and another chance to preorder! 😉

Just 4 My Books

Once again, Annie Skillsett, recruitment manager extraordinaire, is in the chair for this series of interviews.

Today, the character under scrutiny is Raven Hegarty.

Aged 26, Raven is a former trainee policewoman, newly qualified as a Private Investigator (as well as enduring – her words, not mine – a smattering of awful part-time jobs in between)

She joins Fern in Portugal, primarily to support her throughout the trial. However, having just completed her PI training, she’s tentative about starting up on her own. She could do with Fern’s business background to help her, but is nervous about Fern’s potential response – at least while the trial is underway.

Shush, now, the interrogation has begun. Annie invites Raven to take a seat, then sits opposite her, pushing those trendy glasses of hers back onto her nose. She’s ready.

AS: Good afternoon. I’ll get straight to it, if you don’t mind. Lots…
