5/5 Stars!

This read has so many twists, I was tied in knots! By the time I reached the “twistiest” twist, pretty sure I had whiplash! HA!

Deftly written, the author does an amazing job of switching direction just when you think you know what’s going on and where the story’s headed.

Trust me, you don’t.

Businessman Justin Gray is whisked away to Vegas by his brother to celebrate his forty-first birthday. When he wakes up his first morning in Vegas, he has more than a hangover. He also has a new wife half his age who claims they got married after falling in love at first sight.

And he has no memory of any of it.

A sane man would have run away like he was on fire, and to be fair, Justin considered it… right up until the new wife aka Britney, seduces him back into bed. A couple of times.

I was ready to write him off as deserving of whatever happened to him, except he wasn’t. No one deserves that. Yet, along with his brother, David, the men were the weakest links in this read. Well, Jake gets an ‘A’ for effort.

Another name for this one-sitting page-turner could be Betrayal because that’s what it all comes down to, just on multiple levels.

The mind games of Mine will thrill lovers of psychological suspense.

Enjoy!

~~~
When divorcee Justin Gray wakes up next to a beautiful stranger in Vegas on his birthday weekend, he assumes it’s just a drunken mistake. When he discovers that he’s married to said stranger in her early twenties, he insists on an annulment and assumes his life will return to normal once he gets back home.
He assumes wrong.
As the shapely blonde refuses to give him an annulment and insists the marriage continue, what was a wild weekend turns into a deadly mistake.
Murder is only the beginning.
Get ready for a tale of greed so twisted you won’t know what’s on the next page or who anyone really is until the…
very…
last…
page.
5/5 Stars!
Oh how I loved Hunter Nash! My heart broke for him so much early in the story.
Released after serving eight years for killing Corey Broward, his best friend and girlfriend’s brother, Hunter is looking for a fresh start. He’s always professed his innocence though no one believed him, including girlfriend, Delaney, didn’t believe him.
Now that he’s a free man, Hunter is determined to find Corey’s real killer.
Which could be a problem for Hunter when on his release day from prison, Delaney’s best friend, Ellis, is killed in the same manner as Corey.
So, does the same type crime involving the same circle of friends and the same overzealous detective also involve the same man convicted of the first murder?
Hunter Nash claims to be innocent of both murders and looks for a killer while everyone looks at him. A skeptical Delaney eventually joins him, unable to forget the man who attacked her after Ellie’s murder and told her to, “Stay out of it or you’re next.”
Irvin’s top notch suspense thriller makes us wonder if we can ever truly know anyone, and can there be redemption without grace.
Enjoy!
~~~

Synopsis:

When her best friend is murdered the same way her brother was, who can she possibly trust?

A decade ago, Delaney Broward discovered her brother’s murdered body at the San Antonio art co-op he founded with friends. Her artist boyfriend, Hunter Nash, went to prison for the murder, despite his not-guilty plea.

This morning, Hunter walks out of prison a free man, having served his sentence.

This afternoon, Delaney finds her best friend dead, murdered in the same fashion as her brother.

Stay out of it or you’re next, the killer warns.

Hunter never stopped loving Delaney, though he can’t blame her for not forgiving her. He knows he’ll get his life back one day at a time, one step at a time. But he’s blindsided to realize he’s a murder suspect. Again.

When Hunter shows up on her doorstep asking her to help him find the real killer, Delaney’s head says to run away, yet her heart tells her there’s more to his story than what came out in the trial. An uneasy truce leads to their probe into a dark past that shatters Delaney’s image of her brother. She can’t stop and neither can Hunter—which lands them both in the crosshairs of a murderer growing more desperate by the hour.

In this gripping romantic suspense, Kelly Irvin plumbs the complexity of broken trust in the people we love—and in God—and whether either can be mended.

#BookReview “The Prisoner of Paradise” by Rob Samborn

January 24 – February 18, 2022 Virtual Book Tour

Prisoner of Paradise book cover

~~~
5/5 Stars!
Sharp and smart, this engrossing page-turner, leaves little time for breathing.
Opening with two mysterious characters in a clandestine meeting in 16th century Venice, one of the men realizes he must leave his country after they are attacked. However, the man, Angelo Mascari, vows to return to save his love from her torturous imprisonment.
Switch to the present where Nick O’Connor is regaining consciousness after getting head-checked in a hockey game.
During their Italian vacation, Nick’s wife believes he’s still suffering from a concussion and wants him to see a doctor.
But it’s not a doctor Nick needs.
He blacks out in a museum after four-hundred-year-old painting whispers to him and flashes back to 16th century Venice as a peasant swordsman.
A dramatic rescue, a religious brotherhood that may be good… or so very evil, and Nick torn between loving two women in two different centuries are just part of the drama as Nick tries to solve the mystery and free himself from living in two centuries. But does he want to?
Excellent writing and attention to detail transported me from Arizona to Venice! The author’s world-building is spot on and it’s more than obvious he researched this read.
I recommend reading The Prisoner of Paradise in one sitting. Its fast pace and intelligent plot cannot be put aside for long. If you’re a “skimmer” reader, keep it moving. Every word in this read is necessary to lead you to a stunning conclusion.
Enjoy!
~~~

Synopsis:

The world’s largest oil painting. A 400-year-old murder. A disembodied whisper: “Amore mio.” My love.

Nick and Julia O’Connor’s dream trip to Venice collapses when a haunting voice reaches out to Nick from Tintoretto’s Paradise, a monumental depiction of Heaven. Convinced his delusions are the result of a concussion, Julia insists her husband see a doctor, though Nick is adamant the voice was real.

Blacking out in the museum, Nick flashes back to a life as a 16th century Venetian peasant swordsman. He recalls precisely who the voice belongs to: Isabella Scalfini, a married aristocrat he was tasked to seduce but with whom he instead found true love. A love stolen from them hundreds of years prior.

She implores Nick to liberate her from a powerful order of religious vigilantes who judge and sentence souls to the canvas for eternity. Releasing Isabella also means unleashing thousands of other imprisoned souls, all of which the order claims are evil.

As infatuation with a possible hallucination clouds his commitment to a present-day wife, Nick’s past self takes over. Wracked with guilt, he can no longer allow Isabella to remain tormented, despite the consequences. He must right an age-old wrong – destroy the painting and free his soul mate. But the order will eradicate anyone who threatens their ethereal prison and their control over Venice.

#BookReview “A Stranger’s Revenge” by K.J. McGillick

A Stranger's Revenge book cover

Title: A Stranger’s Revenge

Author: K.J. McGillick

Release: January 4, 2022

Genre: Murder Thriller

Goodreads

~~~
5/5 Stars!
Author K.J. McGillick has one speed… fast! And that’s how this reads begins when a gun-running deal goes awry and a two-year-old girl is shot and left for dead.
Fast-forward thirty years and that little girl is now Abigail Cooke, arts law attorney. Though a good family adopted Abby, she’s still always been at odds with her past, wondering why her family left her to die and why they never looked for her.
When a young woman is found murdered in South Boston, government records identify her as Abby. However, when Abby is found alive, further investigating by the FBI proves the dead woman to be Abby’s biological twin, Aisling Dolan.
This information leads Abby on an international journey to find her family and find out why she was abandoned. What she finds is a family enmeshed in international art forgeries/thefts, human trafficking, and murder.
As each person Abby seeks out ends up murdered, she’s suddenly a person of interest, and she doesn’t know why. She wrongly believes if she finds the paintings and returns them to the rightful owner, he’ll be satisfied and she can continue to sort out her tragic past and find a living connection between her and Aisling. But Abby is wrong. He wants the paintings, and he wants her dead.
A strong, solid plot and a likable protagonist made this an enjoyable read that kept me turning pages. Abby Clarke is equal parts a business professional, a take-no-prisoners heroine, and a broken little girl. While she is a successful professional, it’s the broken little girl which keeps her from enjoying a full life.
Fortunately, Abby has the ultimate support network in Maura, a psychiatrist and her lifelong best friend, Edna, her personal assistant, and her grandma Stasha—all three equally strong women who didn’t back down from anything. I have no problem imagining Edna and Stasha opening a detective agency! Those two! HA!
Trying to keep straight the good guys from the bad guys kept me confused right up to the end… and what an ending! This appears to be a standalone read, but I wouldn’t mind reading more about Abby and her crew… and what happens between her and Alessandro.
Enjoy!
~~~

Blurb:

When art law attorney Abigail Clarke is mistaken for the murdered twin sister she never knew existed, will she be able to outwit a man determined to kill every member of her treacherous family.

Thirty years ago, during a thunderstorm, on an isolated street in South Boston, an unidentified two-year-old girl was discovered, abandoned, shot, barely clinging to life. After a thorough investigation, the case was eventually designated to the cold case files until Abigail Clarke, now an astraphobic art law attorney, is mistaken for the murdered twin sister she never knew existed.

What the FBI Art Crime Division cannot determine is if Abigail is an innocent bystander or a co-conspirator in her sister’s art fraud crimes.

Compelled to uncover all her family’s secrets, nothing prepares Abigail for the disastrous meeting with her murderous brother and crime boss father. Her life is irreversibly changed the more she becomes mired in her family’s treachery. She soon finds herself drawn into a game of cat and mouse by the vengeful killer who methodically plans to execute every member of her family, holding each one of them ultimately responsible for the murder of his own family thirty years ago.

#BookReview “The Burden of Innocence” by John Nardizzi

Virtual Book Tour, December 6, 2021 – January 31 2022

BOI cover

~~~
5/5 Stars!
Has an innocent man sat in prison for fifteen years because of a corrupt justice system?
Have the years broken alliances and loosened tongues enough to find the truth?
If those were the only questions to right a wrong, this book would be about ten pages!
But when private investigator Ray Infantino takes on Sam Langford’s case, he’s buried in questions… and not liking the few answers he finds. There was a coverup and it’s mired in corruption on both sides of the law, and neither side is happy about him snooping around.
No choirboy himself, Infantino is repulsed by the depths of the corruption and how high into the halls of justice and money and power it reaches.
Fast-paced and raw, this read at times has an old-style noir feel. While there is a possible trigger disclaimer after the book’s blurb, its in-your-face style for me, was the appeal that kept me turning pages. The plot is no more sensational than present-day headlines, but Infantino and partner, Tania Kong, make it more relatable as their investigation takes them to the grittier side of life most of us never see.
Though book two in The Infantino Files, The Burden of Innocence can be read as a standalone. But with great writing like this, why cheat yourself? Grab book one too!
Enjoy!
~~~

Synopsis:

Private investigators Ray Infantino and Tania Kong take on the case of Sam Langford, framed for a murder committed by a crime boss at the height of his powers.

But a decade later, Boston has changed. The old ethnic tribes have weakened. As the PIs range across the city, witnesses remember the past in dangerous ways. The gangsters know that, in the new Boston, vulnerable witnesses they manipulated years ago are shaky. Old bones will not stay buried forever.

As the gang sabotages the investigation, will Ray and Tania solve the case in time to save an innocent man?

#BookReview “Pay or Play (A Charlie Waldo Novel, 3)” by Howard Michael Gould

January 1-31, 2022 Virtual Book Tour

Pay or Play book cover

~~~
5/5 Stars!
Charlie Waldo is a man torn between his minimalist beliefs and finding the truth. Once a star detective with LAPD, his world crashed around him when he helped send a man to prison, only to later find out the man was innocent. His campaign to win the man his freedom made him a pariah in the department. Life bottomed out for Charlie when he found out the innocent man is killed in a prison fight.
Disillusioned, Charlie walks away, buying twelve acres in the mountains to embark on a lifestyle that would make Thoreau smile. He’s determined to do no more damage. To hurt no one else. So, he lessens his carbon footprint by growing his own food, drinking only tap water, and using only transportation that is either public or self-propelled.
He also owns only One Hundred Things.
While I found Charlie’s commitment to the survival of humankind and the planet laudable, to me, it was simply guilt he couldn’t… or didn’t want to get past.
But once a good cop, always a good cop.
During one of his infrequent trips down the mountain to visit on-again, off-again girlfriend, Lorena Nascimento, the private investigator tries to pull him into one of her cases. Again. This time, it’s easy for her when Charlie finds out the prospective client is the star of his guilty pleasure television show, Judge Ida Mudge.
The thirty-five-year-old hazing death of a student from the Judge’s college days may not be the accident it’s believed to be, but the investigation not only keeps Charlie in conflict with widening his carbon footprint, it also conflicts with his other case – finding out why a homeless man died in a strip mall fountain. Charlie would shake the case off but he is hired by a drug trafficker with little patience and who doesn’t accept no for an answer.
Though he wishes he could deny it and return to his mountain, both cases get Charlie’s detective hackles up when finding the truth could also mean finding a murderer.
But how much of himself is he willing to give? Can he hold fast to his beliefs? Does he want to?
Though I found him to be too tightly wound, I liked Charlie Waldo. He tries to stand on his principles, but he’s flawed six ways from Sunday and he knows it. Lorena is also a strong, likable character who wants more from life… and Charlie, but knows she may have to settle for life.
I haven’t read the previous books in the series, but Pay or Play contains just enough back story to key readers in and stands on its own. However, good writing and original story lines have me curious enough to want to start at the beginning!
Enjoy!
~~~

Synopsis:

Blackmail, sexual harassment, murder . . . and a missing dog: eccentric, eco-obsessed LA private eye Charlie Waldo is on the case in this quirky, fast-paced mystery.

Paying a harsh self-imposed penance for a terrible misstep on a case, former LAPD superstar detective Charlie Waldo lives a life of punishing minimalism deep within the woods, making a near religion of his commitment to owning no more than One Hundred Things.

At least, he’s trying to. His PI girlfriend Lorena keeps drawing him back to civilization – even though every time he compromises on his principles, something goes wrong.

And unfortunately for Waldo, all roads lead straight back to LA. When old adversary Don Q strongarms him into investigating the seemingly mundane death of a vagrant, Lorena agrees he can work under her PI license on one condition: he help with a high-maintenance celebrity client, wildly popular courtroom TV star Judge Ida Mudge, whose new mega-deal makes her a perfect target for blackmail.

Reopening the coldest of cases, a decades-old fraternity death, Waldo begins to wonder if the judge is, in fact, a murderer – and if he’ll stay alive long enough to find out.

Pay or Play is the third in the Charlie Waldo series, following Last Looks and Below the Line. Last Looks was turned into a major motion picture, starring Charlie Hunnam as the offbeat private investigator.

#BookReview “Freeze Before Burning: A Sam Tate Mystery (Sam Tate Mystery Series Book 3)” by Nikki Stern

December 13-31, 2021 Virtual Book Tour

book cover

~~~
5/5 Stars!
As a fan of true crime, Sam Tate’s latest case creeped me out a bit.
Why?
Because a brutal killer’s victims are all fans of a true-crime podcast.
*Shudders* Talk about hitting close to home.
Still haunted by her tragic past, Lt. Tate travels from her small town on the eastern shores of Maryland to the fast-paced Big Apple to take a break and visit family to gain more insight into her past.
Sam’s success on high-profile serial killer cases and a connection from her past leads to her being pulled in as a consultant on the Dry Ice Killer case to help find the sadistic mad man before another member of Deep Freeze, a true-crime podcast chat, is murdered.
Of course, things are never that cut and dried for Sam and as she pulled deeper into the investigation, she also tries to maintain a long-distance relationship with FBI Agent Terry Sloane while trying to make sense of the nightmares that haunt her every night.
But she’s got this, right? Definitely.
While Sam is still much the lone-eagle, in this read, she doesn’t have to be. The task force teams have her back and are ready to support her… if she’ll only allow them to.
What I admire most about Sam are her faults. She’s not perfect. She screws up, makes bad choices, and internalizes her emotions far too often. But she doesn’t allow setbacks to define her. She will rise to meet the challenges of life and her job without whining or blame-placing. What I also admire is that this series is as much about Sam’s personal growth as it is crime-solving. She remains true to herself, but by the story’s end, she has changed, and for the better.
With an ending I wasn’t ready for, this page-turner is the best installment yet of the Sam Tate series and I hope there’s a book four.
Enjoy!
#BookReview “The Cold Killer” by Ross Greenwood
book cover
~~~

5/5 Stars!

I discovered Ross Greenwood a few months ago with his prison-life crime fiction, Prisoner, and had no idea the DI Barton crime thriller series existed.

Wow! Compelling and engaging, The Cold Killer is another winner.

Though it is book four in the series, I didn’t feel as though there were blank spots or missing info from the previous books.

DI John Barton, like Jim Dalton in Prisoner, is diligent and hardworking while trying to keep a balance between work and his family.

When an aged sex offender is brutally murdered in prison, Barton and his team are called in to investigate the not-so-unusual death. When the victim’s home is burglarized, Baron realizes there’s nothing normal about the case. All too soon, they realize they’re dealing with a serial killer, and he’s escalating as crimes and the body count rise. Is the killer a vigilante or seeking a special type of justice? Is the Peterborough prison the only connections between the victims? As Barton runs out of witnesses, he finds he may also be running out of time.

This slow burn read is masterfully written with points of view from both sides of the prison bars. Characters are likeable—or deliciously unlikeable—and memorable. Even the story’s villain, though vicious and brutal, evokes a certain amount of sympathy.

I’ve already downloaded the first three books in the DI Barton series and look forward to reading more of his cases.

Enjoy!

~~~
Synopsis
It’s hard to live when you think you deserve to die…
When a tired old inmate is found dead in his cell, the prison is obligated to investigate and so DI Barton attends. The men he interviews have been convicted of some of the worst things a human being can do, but it appears likely that the death was due to natural causes.
When the house of the dead man is burgled and that crime is followed by a suspicious fire, Barton desperately needs to speak to his widow, but she’s nowhere to be found.
In the space of twenty-four hours, everyone he wants to talk to has vanished. Then he receives some post which makes him believe he could be the next to disappear.
Barton’s investigation goes full circle, through a series of brutal murders, back to the prison, and all signs are pointing to the fact that he’s made a terrible mistake.
There’s a violent killer on the loose, who wants everyone to learn that some people deserve to die.
DI Barton is back as Ross Greenwood continues with his bestselling series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin.
#BookReview “When the Children Return (Children of the Eye Book 2)” by Barry Kirwan
book cover
~~~

5/5 stars!

I’ve looked forward to book two of the Children of the Eye series since January and When the Children Return didn’t disappoint.

A now-adult Sally leads the battle-ready group as the Athena returns to Earth to face the Axleth and reclaim their planet.

It will be easier said than done.

Even with the artificial intelligence Ares and his knowledge way beyond humanity’s imaginings, the fight will be daunting, perhaps even hopeless. Has Ares shared everything he knows with the humans? What does he know about the mysterious ship that attacked the Athena and is following them to Earth?

Doesn’t look as though the enemy of my enemy is my friend, but it will take battle, betrayal, and loss before the true enemy is identified.

Nathan, our hero from book one is back, still not feeling like a hero. Haunted by his service in Afghanistan, even the small victory of saving some of Earth’s children doesn’t change him. Things get even worse for him when Lara goes missing and is presumed dead. But never count him out. The survivors can make this planned assault on their home planet because he got them out the first time and he’ll rise to the occasion when needed.

Like Sally, many of the children who escaped are now adults, some with children of their own. But some have chosen to be augmented by Ares to assist with piloting the Athena, and now exist as something more than human.

However, like in book one, it is man’s humanity that to me is the dominant theme of When the Children Return. Our differences separate us. Our differences lead us to shun, hate, and violence. But Barry Kirwan’s science fiction adventure proves when we have a common enemy and goal, those differences are meaningless and fade away. (So why do we allow them to do so much damage at all?)

This fast-moving epic has several moments of ennui and regret, and sadness, but realistic characters and stellar writing not only lead to smooth transitions but also made this a one-sitting read for me.

Bittersweet, yet hopeful, the ending is open enough for book three, and I’m here for it!

Enjoy!

~~~
When it finally comes, we won’t even know what’s hit us.
Ten years have passed since the Axleth invaded Earth and a few hundred humans escaped aboard the ship Athena, piloted by the Artificial Intelligence who calls himself Ares. Now, the refugees approach Earth, determined to take back their home. But something has followed them from deep in space, and as war breaks out on Earth, humanity must decide who is the real enemy.
#BookReview “Cliff Diver” by Carmen Amato
Cliff Diver by Carmen Amato Banner
November 1-30, 2021 Virtual Book Tour
book cover
~~~

5/5 Stars!

Mexican detective Emilia Cruz is the driving force in this gritty read of crime and corruption.

What begins as a minor crime by a Mexican national quickly moves to murder, police corruption, and nearly every crime imaginable by the Mexican cartels.

The author nails the authenticity of the drugs wars, and at times fiction felt like reality.

Junior detective Cruz not only has her hands full with the murder of her boss, but she also has to deal with being the only woman in the detective squad and the endless micro-aggression from the men who don’t want her there, including her partner.

Emilia’s investigation uncovers more crimes than she expected, but instead of congratulations and support, she gets contempt from her coworkers and superiors for tarnishing the police department’s image and the city.

But that doesn’t stop her.

Acapulco is the exotic setting for this police procedural, and it’s juxtaposed against the poverty of the region, highlighting the disparity of status and class.

There is also a hint of romance for Emilia that could grow in through the series.

With a strong female lead and a well-developed plot—and great subplots—Cliff Diver is a suspenseful read that keeps you turning pages to solve a mystery and find at least one killer.

Looking forward to reading more in the Emilia Cruz series.

Enjoy!

~~~
Synopsis:
Acapulco’s first female police detective dives into an ocean of secrets, lies, and murder when she investigates her own lieutenant’s death.
In this explosive start to the award-winning Detective Emilia Cruz mystery series set in Acapulco, Emilia beat the odds to become the resort city’s first female police detective. But she’s living in a pressure cooker. Other detectives are scheming to push her out and the police department is riddled with corruption and drug cartel influence.
When the lieutenant is murdered, Emilia is assigned to lead the investigation. Soon the man’s sordid sex life, money laundering, and involvement in a kidnapping double-cross combine to create an ugly mess no one wants exposed. The high profile murder case could wreck Emilia’s career. When another detective–Emilia’s worst enemy in the squadroom–emerges as the prime suspect, keeping her job might be the least of her worries.
Readers who love international mystery series crime fighters including Armand Gamache, Harry Hole, Guido Brunetti, and the Department Q series will also love Detective Emilia Cruz’s complex plots, pulse-pounding suspense, and exotic location. Perfect for lovers of detective fiction by Ian Rankin, Jo Nesbo, and Peter May, as well as Don Winslow’s Mexican cartel and border thrillers.
