10 Years… and Counting!

10 year banner~~~

Can’t believe it’s been ten years since this little blog began as a landing page for Region E of Michigan’s south central chapter of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) when I served as a local president, council president and board member.

A lot has changed.

My children are ADULTS, grown and on their own and I stepped away from PTA.

I got fed up with Facebook drama and transitioned this site to a book blog in support of mainly indie authors.

More than 5,000 posts have found their way to these blog pages and received more than 121,000 views and 4500 comments. Many thanks to followers and supporters who make Nesie’s Place a regular stop during their online time.

I’ve made some amazing contacts, and even better… some amazing friends.

I’ve self-published.

I’ve written and posted close 100 short stories on FeliciaDenise.com.

I learned what a Drabble is.

I won a writing challenge.

And I’ve learned quite a bit about blogging, writing, people… and myself.

I’m looking forward to the future and getting back to writing, though the journey will be bittersweet.

I lost my two biggest cheerleaders this year.

My husband, Dennis, in May

Den

(He was always my biggest supporter, reading everything I wrote… then complaining because there was no teleportation, earth-shattering explosions, epic battles, secret portals, guys named Gus and Deke… or zombies. He knew I hated zombies.)

and my mom last weekend.

It’s not lost on me that during my last conversation with Mom, she commented, “I should let you go. I’ve kept you on this phone for two hours and you probably need to write something or do one of those blog thingys.”

Mom. God bless her.

It’s not going to be easy, but I’d better get busy writing… and doing those blog thingys.

National Chicken Wing Day!

Banner

~~~
From NationalDayCalendar.com
~~~

History – After a number of years of different establishments selling their version of Buffalo Wings, the city of Buffalo, NY in 1977 proclaimed July 29th to be National Chicken Wing Day.  Establishments like the Anchor Bar, Wings n’ Things and Duff’s all became famous for their wings.

~~~
Wings are my favorite part of the chicken! Along with chicken breasts, they’re the only chicken I buy.
Last year, I prepared six different types of wings to celebrate #NationalChickenWingDay, but now that I’m alone, this year will be on a much lower key.
But there will still be wings… I’m ordering in!
Regardless if they’re called hot wings, buffalo wings, drummies, or wingettes, chicken wings can be ordered in just about every pizza parlor, Denny’s, IHOP, Applebee’s, Cheddar’s, and local mom and pop restaurants in the country. Even some gas station/convenience stores sell wings. Hello, Chester’s Chicken!
However, not all chicken wings are not created equal.
I’ve had wings from most of the popular franchises over the years, and while there are dozens of sauces and seasonings with cute, catchy names, many of these wing entrees have one thing in common.
They’re not cooked to an adequate doneness.
.Be it a wing, leg or thigh, chicken should pull away easily from the bone. One should not have to engage in a tug of war with a piece of meat or risk chipping a tooth. (And there has to be a bone! Keep your boneless wings to yourself! 😦  )
Yet, with so many restaurants preparing orders with timed cooking from posted charts, undone chicken is all too often the result.
It’s okay with some people, and others truly don’t know any better.
It’s unacceptable to me. I’ve had food poisoning because of improperly prepared food, and that’s not a party I plan to attend again.
So, where will I get wings to celebrate #NationalChickenWingDay?
From the only place where I’ve never been served an undone order of wings… Buffalo Wild Wings.
wings
My sons and late husband made it a point to explore the entire menu, but I’ve never ordered anything other than wings and onion rings from BWW.
And that works for me.
If you don’t already have a favorite wing stop, it could work for you too… because how could you not celebrate #NationalChickenWingDay?
Enjoy!
‘Twas Just Before Christmas
Twas’ the Night Before Christmas…writer’s version! Stop by Staci’s and check it out!
Staci Troilo
One writer’s take on a popular holiday poem. Enjoy!
Christmas Faerie Muse
’Twas just before Christmas, ideas had been humming
Fingers clacking the keys and suffering from numbing
Time to shut down for the end of the year
Munch on a cookie, drink a cold beer
The house was so quiet because I was up late
Drafting a plot twist that just wouldn’t wait
But until January, my writing was done
I needed a break, I needed some fun
I scrolled through my playlist, found the Rat Pack
Danced to Dean Martin while making a snack
I was cutting a slice of a candied fruit torte
When I heard a soft giggle then a cynical snort
The refrigerator provided only dim light
The rest of the room was shadowed that night
I hurried to the wall, flipped up the switch
Turned and was startled. Yelled, “Son of a—“
A spritely young faerie stood on…
WOMAN’S PERFECT BREAKFAST
She’s sitting at the table with her gourmet coffee.
Her son is on the cover of the Wheaties box.
Her daughter is on the cover of Business Week.
Her boyfriend is on the cover of Playgirl.
And her husband is on the back of the milk carton.
WOMEN’S REVENGE
“Cash, check or charge?” I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase.
As she fumbled for her wallet, I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse.
“So, do you always carry your TV remote?” I asked.
“No,” she replied, “but my husband refused to come shopping with me,
and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally.”
UNDERSTANDING WOMEN
(A MAN’S PERSPECTIVE)
I know I’m not going to understand women.
I’ll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax,
pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root,
and still be afraid of a spider.
MARRIAGE SEMINAR
While attending a Marriage Seminar dealing with communication,
Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor,
“It is essential that husbands and wives know each other’s likes and dislikes.”
He addressed the man,
“Can you name your wife’s favorite flower?”
Tom leaned over, touched his wife’s arm gently and whispered, “It’s Pillsbury, isn’t it?
CIGARETTES AND TAMPONS
A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up & down the aisles.
The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help him.
He answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his wife.
She directs him down the correct aisle.
A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter.
She says, confused, “Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife?
He answers, “You see, it’s like this,
yesterday, I sent my wife to the store
to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco
and some rolling papers; cause it’s sooo-ooo–oo-ooo much cheaper.
So, I figure if I have to roll my own ………. so does she.
(I figure this guy is the one on the milk carton!)
WIFE VS. HUSBAND
A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word.
An earlier discussion had led to an argument and
neither of them wanted to concede their position.
As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs,
the husband asked sarcastically, “Relatives of yours?”
“Yep,” the wife replied, “in-laws.”
WORDS
A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day…
30,000 to a man’s 15,000.
The wife replied, “The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men…
The husband then turned to his wife and asked, “What?”
CREATION
A man said to his wife one day, “I don’t know how you can be
so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time.
“The wife responded, “Allow me to explain.
God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me;
God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!
WHO DOES WHAT
A man and his wife were having an argument about who
should brew the coffee each morning.
The wife said, “You should do it because you get up first,
and then we don’t have to wait as long to get our coffee.
The husband said, “You are in charge of cooking around here and
you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.”
Wife replies, “No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.”
Husband replies, “I can’t believe that, show me.”
So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says ………. “HEBREWS”
The Silent Treatment
A man and his wife were having some problems at home
and were giving each other the silent treatment.
Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him
at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper,
“Please wake me at 5:00 AM.” He left it where he knew she would find it.
The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him,
when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed.
The paper said, “It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.”
Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests.
God may have created man before woman, but there is always a rough draft before the masterpiece.
Now, admit it.  At least one of these made you smile!
