The director of the University Press was often characterized as a man who needed killing. The Press’s authors and employees certainly wouldn’t disagree–even Peter the Gray, the office cat, detested him. So when someone puts a bullet through Philip Douglas’s head, Crawford has plenty of suspects to consider when he is once again thrust into the role of detective.

Murder can be spooky

Oliver Atkinson, married father of two and would be writer, has a woman on his mind. Literally. Violet Tumbleton died in 1948, but now she’s taken up residence in Oliver’s head. A con artist has taken her name and Violet wants it back.

Reluctantly Oliver agrees to help, and is soon entangled in a plot involving a stolen painting, and murder. He’s way out of his depth as he juggles household duties, father duties, writing, and a suspicious wife who wants to know about the beautiful con artist he’s suddenly spending time with.

One thing’s for sure, he’s going to need all his wits to avoid ending up a spirit like Violet.

Murder in Paint is a thrilling and humorous cozy mystery full of twists and turns. Author Rodney Strong has crafted an entertaining tale about ordinary people given the chance to do extraordinary things.

Sex in Redneck’s Revenge: PG13

Yes, there’s six in my new mystery, Redneck’s Revenge. It makes sense because I write about adults and sex is a part of what they do. But it is a delicate matter when writing about something oh-so personal and with the potential to be vulgar. Let’s say I give enough so my readers can use their imagination.

There are no graphic descriptions of body parts. Nothing throbs. The sex scenes aren’t icky or embarrassing. My characters are consenting adults who are having a good old time in the sack, and in Redneck’s Revenge, they are mature consenting adults.

Specifically, Isabel, the book’s protagonist, has been a widow for a little more than a year. She grieved for him properly and then she was ready to have a relationship with all the fixings. How did she put it? It’s time to do something foolish or at least, have fun.

It’s all a part of her transformation from a long-time journalist to an amateur sleuth. She has one case under her belt — check out Chasing the Case for that — and has signed on for another.

Isabel is what the French call une femme d’un certain age. I didn’t want a protagonist who was some sweet, young, but a woman with experience.

That’s what she does. And she doesn’t have to look far even in that dinky hilltown where she lives. Try the town’s only bar, the Rooster.

I’m not going to spoil things by giving away who Isabel has sex with in Redneck’s Revenge. (Actually he even has a rival.) But I will say there’s a lot of playful banter between Isabel and her lover, but then again she is a bit on the sassy side.

Then there’s Annette Waters, who hires Isabel for this case. She owns a garage and junkyard. Let’s say, Annette likes to play around and she’s not shy about it. Here is a conversation between Isabel, who works part-time at the Rooster Bar, and Annette, who’s there for fun.

“But I’m not giving up just yet,” I tell Annette. “How about I come over tomorrow to dig around?”

“That works for me. Make it early afternoon, say one or later, after the sun hits that spot for a while. Make it easier.” She smirks. “Besides, I’m expectin’ company tonight.”

“Anyone I know?”

“Not sure. Haven’t picked him out yet.”

“We’ve got a full house, so your chances are good.”

“Yeah. And if I ain’t as picky as you.”

One more thing on writing about sex: I will admit a few of my adult kids were uncomfortable about the sex scenes in my other books. So, when I gave my now 94-year-old mother a copy, I added this warning, “Mom, there’s a bit of sex in it.” (By the way, she is the inspiration for Isabel’s mother, who is her ‘Watson’ in this series.)

Here’s what she told me after reading it: “Oh, I’ve read a lot worse than that.”

Really Mom?

YUMMY AS A CUPCAKE…AND GUARANTEED CALORIE-FREE!

Creepy meeting place aside, the last thing you’d expect to find at a ladies’ diet club meeting would be a dead body, right? And although voluptuous amateur sleuth Missy DeMeanor has seen more than one body, this is different. This is one of her oldest friends.,

Having tried almost everything – she’s exercising at the gym and she eats less than her petite best friend Noreen, but she seems to gain weight just standing still – finally, Missy’s decided to accept the invitation of her oldest friend Karen, to join a secretive, ladies only, invitation-only, contract-required diet club. But at Missy’s first meeting, Karen, who is obviously ill, is discovered dead on the bathroom floor. The police decide that her death was caused by an extreme diet and quickly close the case.

As hard as it is to accept her friend’s death, Missy just cannot bring herself to believe that Karen would have put her health at risk with a weight-loss plan Karen herself described as “the craziest diet” she’d heard about. Missy keeps insisting Karen would never knowingly have ingested a harmful substance-– so who gave it to her? But her ex-boyfriend, Grove City’s chief detective Tyler Brock, isn’t listening. And so, given Tyler’s refusal to dig deeper, it’s up to her to solve the mystery if anyone’s going to.

Through the haze of her own grief, she bravely-– “recklessly”, in Tyler’s words-– probes the complicated turns Karen’s life has taken over the years she and Missy remained close at heart, but geographically removed. And, as in all good murder mysteries, secrets tumble out one after another, making Missy wonder if it’s even possible to know another person.

Meanwhile, she still has feelings for Tyler that make her too uncomfortable to be around him, knowing that he’s trying to work things out with his estranged wife. Yet he’s alternately flirtatious and impatient with her endeavors to unmask a killer… almost as if he still cares about her and is trying to protect her.

Like the rest of this series, this delightful cozy is a quick, easy, very fun read with no cliffhangers, on-the-page violence, or graphic scenes. Fans of Gina LaManna, Jana DeLeon, Mary Daheim, and Leighann Dobbs will eat it up and go back for seconds—the whole series goes down faster than a plate of cupcakes and won’t cost you a single calorie.
