Bez Delivers!

There are several good book series out there about the paranormal world of wolf shifters. However, Ellis Leigh’s elements of strength, commitment, and dominance, wrapped up in a nice dose of vulnerability, for me, stand out from the rest.

In Leigh’s latest series, we meet the Dire Wolves – the Ancients…thought to be extinct by most. The Dires are the biggest, baddest, meanest breed of wolf shifter, and seven men remain, having spent millennia fighting side by side. They are a pack unto themselves.

Book 1 is Bez’s (Beelzebub) story. Someone is kidnapping pack Omegas – rare and powerful female shifters, going as far as decimating entire packs to do it. Called in by Blasius ‘Blaze’ Zenne, NALB (National Association of the Lycan Brotherhood) president to find the latest taken Omega – The teenager, Angelita, the methodical, relentless Bez is already formulating his plan before he leaves the president’s residence. Things go pretty much the way Bez intended…until he arrives at the location where the young Omega is being held and finds not one but TWO captive Omegas. One look at the second Omega, Sariel, and the mating call kicks in. Bez is thrown off his game. Dire Wolves have been alone and unmated for hundreds of years – so long in fact, they figured there were NO mates for them. Now face to face with Sariel, he cannot…and will not ignore the mating call. He’s still intent on his objective – rescuing the young Omega – but there is no way he’s leaving his fated mate behind to an almost certain death once they find Angelita gone. Will Bez compromise his mission? Will it cost him his life and the lives of two Omegas, one his destined mate?

The tension is high in this story, because Bez’s actions do change the direction of his mission. He is literally torn between fulfilling the mating ritual and claiming his mate, and staying focused on keeping Angelita…and his mate…alive. Can a Dire wolf do both? Especially when his mate feels the call as strongly as he does?

Loved, loved, loved Sariel! Even while she was being held captive alone, her mind was on thoughts of escape. She was tired and weak, but not too weak to pretend to respect and obey her nefarious captors. When Angelita is captured and brought to the cell, Sariel instantly goes into protect and nurture mode. Although Sariel is an Omega, I felt she would be a strong female even if that were not the case. Her instincts were usually on point. Are they from the Omega, the shifter, or the woman? I do not know. But it’s these same instincts that make her aware of the missteps Bez makes. He’s not supposed to be saving her – she’s not a part of the mission. But Sariel also feels the calls to mate. Is it just the way of their nature, or can there really be something between her and the big, scary, violent dude? She’s more than ready to find out!

Bez has backup on the way, but the baddies are closing in and they have a secret weapon – a nasty old werewolf that eats Omegas! Bez may have to make a stand on his own – but he hasn’t lived hundreds of years to fail at a mission, or to lose the mate he never knew he needed.

Take this journey – 1-click now!

Enjoy!

Adult Excerpt (18+ Only)

Taye wasn’t sure he’d be able to find Kija’s daughter, especially when he had no access to Stone Haven’s computers, or more accurately, Stone Haven’s computer experts, Rangi and Zeke. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t do everything in his power to find Takara. “Good,” he told his mate as he finished washing the last of the cuts on Kija’s hand. “Tell me everything you know about Cong and Sitara.”

“I can’t. I’ve already said too much.” It was obvious Cong and Sitara had convinced Kija they would hurt his daughter.

As much as Taye wanted to reassure his mate, he couldn’t lie to him. Taye hated to believe anyone, no matter how depraved they were would hurt a child, but he knew better. Hell, he’d seen that and so much worse over the years.

But if he was going to find Takara, he was going to need help. His mate may not trust his inner circle but Taye did. Sure his body was battered, but he knew it could have been so much worse. Death had tempered his blows. It had still hurt like a bitch, but Taye was under no illusion how lucky he’d been.

A low rumbling growl reverberated around the marble bathroom, sinking right into Taye’s dick. That was the first time since waking up, Taye even realized he was completely naked. Heat flooded his face as he looked down to see his cock hard and leaking.

When he glanced up at Kija and saw the man’s blue eyes fixated on his appendage, Taye’s prick gave a twitch as if it were trying to get closer to his mate. Not that Taye blamed it. Kija was sexy as fuck.

Fascinated, he watched Kija’s tongue come out and lick his lips. Taye let out a moan of need. How could he not? Just the thought of those lips wrapped around him had Taye ready to come without even being touched.

As if the fantasy trying to play out in his head of Kija sucking him off were coming true, his mate lowered to his knees. But Kija didn’t just take Taye into his mouth. If he had, maybe Taye wouldn’t feel like he was being driven out of his ever loving mind.

The feeling of hot air as Kija blew out along the stalk had Taye reaching back to grip the counter as his knees started to weaken. But when Kija’s tongue lapped at the tip to taste the beads of fluid there, Taye wasn’t sure how he remained standing. The pleasure was too intense and he felt himself sliding downwards.

Strong hands were suddenly at his hips, pinning him to the counter. Damn, he knew his mate was strong. Taye had seen it in the chiseled lines of Kija’s body, but the force with which those large hands held him, turned Taye on like nothing ever had.

If asked, even a day ago, Taye would have sworn he’d never be attracted to an Alpha. They had too much testosterone flowing through their bodies. It was as if they believed the world really did revolve around them and everyone should bow to their wishes. Taye was too old and too set in his ways to let anyone tell him what to do.

Yet, there he was, being pinned by an Alpha who seemed determined to do things his way and at his pace. Sure, Taye was soaring with each stroke of that tongue along his dick, but he still shouldn’t be so turned on by Kija’s manhandling him. With so many delicious sensations rolling through his body, Taye wasn’t about to deny how much he loved what Kija was doing to him.

If his mate kept this up, Taye may just have to beg for this kind of treatment more often. Because, damn, that man knew how to work Taye’s cock.

Soft laps of Kija’s tongue finally morphed into those sweet lips wrapping around the tip. Taye tried to thrust deeper into that hot cavern but Kija kept a firm hold of his hips, denying him any control.

Intense suction on the head of his prick had Taye’s head dropping back on his shoulders as a low throaty moan spilled from his lips. “Damn, Kija. Your mouth is so fucking hot.”

There was nothing more Taye wanted to do than to fuck the mouth that was driving him insane, but no matter how hard he tried, Kija wouldn’t give up the hold he had on Taye’s hips. Finally, Taye just let his mate do whatever he wanted and gave into the sensations that crashed through him.

Tendrils of fire curled around his balls and up into his body. Taye could hardly believe he was already on edge. It had only been a couple of minutes and Kija hadn’t gone further than the top of his dick.

His balls drew up tight to his body. Tingling along his spine had Taye biting his lip. He didn’t want this to end. Hell, he never wanted this to end. The way those lips and tongue worked him, Taye could stay just like this for the rest of his life.

Review Blog Tour – “Phaelyn” & “Teague” (Dark Shadows #2.5 & #3) by Ariel Marie

Double Book Tour

Phaelyn (The Dark Shadows 2.5)

The Dark Shadows were charged with the responsibility of protecting the vampire nation. Going after the kidnapped vampire royal guard was all in a day’s work.

Idris Lafayette waited inside of his prison cell for the Dark Shadows to come for him. Idris knew that they would be relentless in their quest to find him. No vampire left behind. Through all of the torture and experiments the necromancers put him through he refused to break. He held onto a small shred of hope. Hope that he would be rescued, hope that the Shadows would tear through the necro’s hidden underground lair and kill them all. He yearned to get at least one last glimpse of her.

As the lone female Dark Shadow member, Phaelyn Otvos was used to being singled out. She was one of the deadliest females to ever hold a sword. Enemies underestimated her, while potential lovers were intimidated by her. Her latest assignment—retrieve the missing vampire guard. The one person who captured her heart years ago was now her mission. Thrown together in the midst of the war between vampire and necromancers, will Phaelyn and Idris recognize that they were meant for each other?

~~~Felicia’s Review of “Phaelyn”~~~
5/5 Stars!
We found Idris!
I was truly bugged at the end of Toma, when I couldn’t remember what happened to Idris. I even went back and re-read through the fight sequence twice! Good to see him…but as a hostage…not so much. But the Olarus are an honorable family, and never gave up searching for Idris. Says a lot about their character…and his. I also loved that Idris KNEW they would come for him – he just had to hold on.
Enjoyed the opening sequence, detailing how Phaelyn came to be a made vampire. Gave more depth to her, and explained not only why she’d never again be a victim, but her motivation to excel as a Shadow warrior. Would have enjoyed some of the same for Idris, but not having it didn’t detract from the story.
It was a bit surprising to find that while both Idris and Phaelyn were pledged to the Royal Family, they actually had little contact with each other. Explains some of their hesitancy and unfounded doubts.
This author has a knack for writing villains I truly loathe! Like Xalak before him, Zoreal made me wish I could kill him myself! LOL! The description of Idris after his last “session” with Zoreal was it for me – he had to go!
Good team effort out in the woods. Shadow warriors will not be deterred…no matter how many versi there are!
It was also refreshing to see Idris and Phaelyn not go through endless, unnecessary denial about being mates, being together, blah, blah, blah. They both knew that despite being vampires, time was still a gift.
Good to see those around the Royal Family also find their fated mates.
Loved this surprise installment in the Dark Shadows series, and definitely recommend it!
Enjoy!
Teague (The Dark Shadows 3)
The necromancers are not the only ones with allies….
Failure is not an option. Teague Olaru, vampire prince and Dark Shadow warrior, has received his orders. Seek out the vampire’s long time ally, the valkyries, and convince them to stand with the vampires in their war against the necromancers. It should have been a straightforward mission, that is, until he met Bella.
Arabella Kaldana, Valkyrie warrior, had led the life of a seasoned maiden warrior staying true to her oaths and protecting the good people of Aphadore. She’s never had doubts about the life she was destined for, until she met Teague. The sexy vampire was never far from her thoughts. He had her wanting more.
Teague and Arabella’s budding relationship is put to the test in the midst of the war. Arabella’s ultimate destiny has been presented to her and she’s torn…. follow her destiny or follow her heart?
~~~Felicia’s Review of “Teague”~~~

5/5 Stars!

Just when I believe Toma is my favorite Dark Shadows story, in walks Teague! LOL!

I don’t know what it is about a man who gets smacked in the face by love, but they’re just too adorable! The usually confident, cocky, snarky youngest son of Vladimir and Alin Olaru barely recognizes himself when he meets…and is unable to claim his fated mate, the Valkyrie warrior princess, Arabella.

Sent to enlist the Valkyries’ assistance in eliminating mega-witch, Rowena, Teague is cautioned by older brother, Nicu, to not make trouble with the virginal Valkyries. The last thing Teague expected to find…or was even on his mind…was the woman he was meant to spend his life with.

Arabella makes the list of my favorite book heroines. No whining and running for this Valkyrie Princess. A true warrior in character and spirit, she was perplexed by her feelings for Teague. But, she was very honest with herself…and him. She wanted him, and wanted to BE with him, but her Valkyrie destiny was her priority. Even as she broke her maiden vow, she knew nothing else would come of it. I’m sure she would have been thrilled at that point, if things were different, but not once did she try to manipulate the situation or evade her duty. She was as honorable a warrior as Teague was…and he admired her for that.

The scene during the queen’s hearing was chaotic. That hag, Rowena, was bound and determined to have her way. My heart broke for Teague as the scene ended, and as they returned to the Aphadore realm. It was hard watching him when he returned home and to his Shadow warrior duties, but the scene with Toma was touching for the fact that it let Teague know his feelings were valid and he wasn’t alone.

I wasn’t surprised at the identity of Arabella’s father, but definitely was at how it played into the final scenes of the story. Great plot twist!

This series just keeps getting better and better! By the time we get to Nicu, I’ll probably internally combust! LOL! But for now, 1-click Teague and take his journey to love…while we wait for Adrian!

Enjoy!

For centuries, a vicious war has raged on between the Necromancers and Vampires. Two powerful races who refused to surrender in defeat. A half a century ago, the Necromancers disappeared from the face of the Earth…. until now.

Nadira Olaru, the youngest offspring of the Vampire King has become the target of the re-emerging Necromancers. The King of the Necromancers has offered a peace treaty, an offer he refuses to take no for an answer. His one demand— Nadira to mate with his son. The Dark Shadows, Vampire warriors run by her eldest brother, have been charged with protecting the Vampirian Princess at all cost.

Zac Cooper, human police detective, never believed in the supernatural world, that is, until he witnessed a dead body walk right out of the morgue. Fate brings Zac and Nadira together. Twice. Nadira knows that Zac is her Fated Mate, but now he is caught in the middle of the war between the Vampires and Necromancers.

Nadira is torn, should she be selfish and mate with the love of her life for all eternity? Or should she sacrifice their love forever, and let him go, in order to save him?

For centuries, the Dark Shadows have been charged with protecting the Vampire nation. Necromancers, their mortal enemies, are growing bolder and stronger in their attempt to destroy the vampires. Anika Massey, best friend to the vampirian princess, has lusted after her friend’s older brother, Toma, for years and he doesn’t seem to even notice she exists. At least, she didn’t think the Dark Shadows warrior did, until the necromancers turned their focus on her. He noticed her. One touch and Toma Olaru knew he wouldn’t be able to give her up. Since their first meeting he could not get the curvy human female off of his mind. He knew it wasn’t right for him to have feelings for his sister’s best friend, but fate had decided that she’s his mate. She’s human and according to Vampire laws, he cannot have her and should have never touched her. Anika understands the ways of the vampires and knows she must let Toma go, but will Toma be willing to let her go?

Ten minutes later a winded soldier came racing back. “Alpha Ren is sending someone to escort him,” the man told the guard who hadn’t taken his eyes off Taye the entire time they’d been standing there.

“He better send more than one,” the guard muttered.

Taye had tried to go for innocent and unassuming, but the guard clearly hadn’t been buying it. Not that it mattered. Taye was getting what he wanted, to see Kija Ren face to face. Then he could find out for himself if the Alpha was a traitor or not.

Based on the ineptitude of the men he’d encountered so far, Taye couldn’t say what he’d expected from the escorts the Alpha was sending. He definitely didn’t think it was the two men heading their way. They took lethal to a level that was just plan scary. Since Taye trained with some of the most dangerous men on the planet that was saying something.

Not that these two men stood a chance against Alek Rykov’s inner circle. Still Taye had to admit to a moment of trepidation as they stalked toward him. The grace with which they moved reminded him of Alek. It must have something to do with being a cat shifter.

Raidon Tao, second to the Asian Alpha and Divine Death, the Asian assassin, appeared just as deadly as their file had indicated. Both men had fought in the Great War fiercely. From the battlefield reports, they had enjoyed the kill a little too much.

Although, the same could be said about a lot of paranormals at the time. After being experimented and tortured for years at the hands of the humans, many Shifters and Mystics took it out on the human population who dared to wage war on them.

Even Taye, who had only endured fifteen years at the hands of the humans, had felt nothing but rage at those who had thought it was okay to do unspeakable things to the paranormals just because they were different.

Taye had been one of the lucky ones. Somehow he’d been noticed by Maui Koa, a Fire Mystic, who eventually became Alek’s enforcer. Even though Maui had been drowning in his own rage at what had happened to him in those labs, he didn’t let Taye do the same. Somehow a man who didn’t see the good in the world was able to force Taye to see it.

It had taken time and a lot of blood shed for Taye to recognize the soul eating fury that had been inside of him. When he did, Taye knew he had to change. Now he fought for what was right, not for the joy of killing. It helped him sleep better at night.

“What business do you have with the Alpha?” Raidon asked. His expression was one of boredom, but Taye could see the alertness in the second’s eyes. By the way his gaze stopped at certain spots on Taye’s body, Raidon had noticed the weapons Taye was carrying. The man missed nothing.

But it was the assassin with him, Devine Death, who preferred to be called, Death, that scared the shit out of Taye. Never had he seen such cold, soulless eyes as Death’s. They were so dark, Taye would swear they were black. This was a man who would kill just because he could.

“My name is Taye Kata,” he repeated yet again. “I’m from Stone Haven and I need to speak with the Alpha.”

Neither man before him moved or said a word. They just stared at Taye.

But this wasn’t Taye’s first rodeo. If he could survive Maui doing the same with the addition of a fireball being casually tossed from hand to hand as if the man were contemplating throwing it at him, Taye could handle anything.

It was five minutes before Raidon’s lips lifted a fraction. If he’d been alone, Taye would have pumped his fist in the air at a job well done. Since he wasn’t, he just continued to stare, not showing any indication that he was happy to be accepted.

“Come with us,” Raidon said. The gate was lifted and Taye soon found himself following the second with Death at his back. It wasn’t exactly the position he’d prefer. Not that it mattered. From everything he’d read, if Death was in the area, there was no where a person could hide. At least this way, Taye knew he was there.

What Taye didn’t understand was why no one bothered to remove his weapons. They had to be concerned about his intentions. If Taye was correct, and he was sure he was, the Asian Territory had the other five nukes. They not only knew about the plans to destroy Stone Haven, they were in on it. So why would they take a chance with their Alpha’s life. Unless they wanted Kija Ren dead.

Was Alek right? Was Kija being set up?

Large ornate doors that stood at least twenty feet high opened to a large foyer. It seemed impossible but the inside was even more ostentatious than the outside. Marble floors gleamed brightly as they made their way to another set of doors that were painted with a scene of a bloody battle from the Great War.

Triumphant paranormals raised their bloody weapons in victory as they stood over humans who lay in pools of their own blood. It was gruesome to say the least. Taye knew several of his kind who would appreciate the scene. Which was why, after four days, the Alpha Primus hadn’t opened the Alliance’s computer system.

Alek knew he had too many enemies who wanted to see him dead to risk the lives of his people. Until they had the worst of the radiation cleaned up and the wounded were on the mend, or at least somewhere safe, Alek wouldn’t reinitiate the system.

The doors before Taye opened and his jaw dropped. The room was blanketed in gold and jewels. Only the marble floor escaped the gaudy appearance. It was like the Alpha wanted everyone to know just how rich he was. From what Alek had said, Kija Ren had been a simple man with simple tastes.

The few trips Alek had made to the Asian Territory shortly after the Alliance had been formed, Kija had lived in a two room hut. The Alpha could often be found toiling in the fields with his men. So how did a man go from that to this?

“The Alpha will be with you shortly,” a small man with a goatee said from the other side of the room. Then he opened a door and disappeared through it.

Raidon and Devine flanked Taye. Their pose was casual, but Taye wasn’t fooled. They were both poised and ready to strike if need be.

Then the door the small man had left through, opened once more and the man who looked so much like the picture Taye had been fascinated with the whole trip strode into the room. Kija Ren.

A small gasp Taye couldn’t hold back escaped as the aroma of earthy musk filled the room. It couldn’t be. Yet everything inside of Taye said it was. Before him stood Kija Ren, the Alpha. A man suspected of being a traitor to the Alliance – and Taye’s mate.

#SpinItInAMinute with McKenzie Lewis, Author of “Hitman’s Secret Baby: A Bad Boy Romance”

stop-watch-396862_960_720

Happy Friday, and thanks for stopping by! Today we’re having a quick chat with McKenzie Lewis, author of the wildly popular, “Hitman’s Secret Baby: A Bad Boy Romance!”

Hiya McKenzie! Thanks for giving us a few minutes of your time today. So first, the obvious. When and why did you begin writing?

I’m an avid reader, so I guess it was natural for me to write the types of books I totally love to read.

I’ve been writing poems and stories (not assigned by my teachers, lol) since I was in elementary school. My first book was non-fiction, published almost ten years ago

What book are you reading now?
I’m doing lots of research on MMA. As a side note, I’m a green belt in Shotokan karate.

Whoa! Remind me to stay on your good side!  What are your current projects?
I’m working on a 3-book MMA Bad Boy series. Each book will focus on a different couple, but they’ll all be connected to each other in one way or the other.

Your cover is amazing! Who designed it?
Kasmit Covers.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Writing Mason’s character. I wanted him to be an Alpha-male, but not an A-hole. Yes, he needed to be bad, but I also wanted him to be a likable hero. Writing the epilogue was also challenging, because despite wanting Taryn and Mason’s story to have a happily-ever-after ending, I wanted readers to get the sense that Mason didn’t suddenly become the perfect guy because he got the girl; he still had flaws, relics of his former life, that he needed to work on…even beyond the story’s ending.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thanks for giving this new-to-you author a few hours of your precious time to read her story. Thanks for the words of encouragement via emails and FB messages and for the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Thanks for designing teasers and for…omigosh… Just, THANK YOU, for being YOU!

Thank YOU, McKenzie for taking the time to #SpinItInAMinute with us! We’ll be watching for that 3-book MMA Bad Boy series!

Be sure to 1-click Hitman’s Secret Baby: A Bad Boy Romance” today for #99cents or #FREE on Kindle Unlimited!

(A taste)

It’s still dark when I wake up with a jolt, the cold sweat covering my naked body. It takes me a moment, like it always does, to remember where I am and that I’m safe. The seconds tick by, and my breathing evens out. Rubbing my hands against my eyes, I remind myself that I’m not in a cage.

I give up on sleep and get up from the bed. I make my way to the bathroom, turn on the shower, and get in before the water has a chance to warm up. I’m used to cold showers after being denied the luxury of hot water for so long and then having to bathe in rivers when I escaped.

I soap up and try not to think about my past, but it always comes flooding back after a nightmare. I can’t seem to stop it, so I just have to ride it out until all the feelings pass. This dream was like so many before, most of it exactly the same, but sometimes my mind likes to add in details that weren’t there, just to fuck with me.

This time when I was dreaming, I was in the cage again. The one they kept me locked in unless they were running tests. They had a theory that if shifters were kept in small places, they would be less likely, or unable, to shift.

In this dream, I was in the cage, and I could hear Winnie crying. I know this didn’t happen because Winnie was never captured with me. She got away. I always have to remind myself of that. We were young when we were caught, but she fought and was able to get free. I was too drugged up to know what happened, and all I could remember was waking up in a cell without her.

I’d learned over the years that we were taken by a company that was doing research on shifters. They kept us as if we were animals in a lab. It was a horrible time in my life, and ever since I broke free, my only goal was finding my sister. When I found her, it was only to see that she had amnesia and was being cared for here in Gray Ridge. Winnie had gotten lucky, and Alpha Stone had taken her into the pack and kept her safe. When I found her, and when her memories came back, I felt like my journey had finally come to an end.

Only it didn’t.

I’m a bear shifter, and there aren’t as many of us as there are of other species. Even fewer bear shifter females exist. When Winnie mated with Alpha Stone, I could have left, but I didn’t want to. Bears aren’t normally pack animals, but they are close to their families. I couldn’t move away from Winnie after finally finding her, even though she was mated.

Thankfully, Alpha Stone welcomed me into the pack and gave me some land. Xavier, one of the wolf shifters, and I built my cabin out here to give me some space away from the pack and also to have a way to stay close to Winnie.

I’d been in captivity for so long that I was worried I wouldn’t be able to adjust to pack life. But Xavier had gone through some trauma before he met his mate, and he was able to give me some advice to help me cope.

When we built the house, he helped me put in extra security measures so that I could feel safe again. My nightmares used to be a lot worse, and I think he knew it. So to help, we installed bolted locks both inside and outside the entry points of the house. The locks are in place in a way that no one is going in or out of my home without my permission. The extra security helps me sleep. As long as the nightmares don’t creep in.

When I’ve finished showering, I make myself breakfast and have coffee. My life is very quiet, and I don’t have many friends—just the Gray Ridge pack people who Winnie makes me hang out with. I look over at the counter and see an invitation to a kid’s birthday party at Xavier and Gwen’s home. I know I should want to go and be around everyone, but I feel myself getting tired and wanting to hibernate.

I let out a long sigh and try to shake off the dark mood. Internally, I know that I’m safe and everything is okay. I’m just getting used to the world again. Also being around a lot of happy mated couples can start to wear on any single shifter after a while. There’s a longing that comes with wanting to find your mate, and knowing I probably never will sends another wave of sadness over me.

Closing my eyes, I see dark hair and blue eyes. I try to grab on to the image, but it’s gone like smoke through my fingers. I think of the image every time I think about finding my mate. I don’t even know where the image is from or how I remember it, but something about it is familiar.

I push away from the table and clean up the kitchen. When I finish, I look outside. The sun has come up and it’s starting to snow a bit. I love this time of year. The cool air and the clean smells of the forest calm my bear. I feel him stir inside me, and I decide he could use a walk in the woods.

Bears aren’t much for running or spending energy when they don’t have to. Our shifters are usually really big and solidly built. I lost a lot of weight when I was being held captive, but in the time since, I’ve put on a lot of weight. It feels good to have the extra layers of thick muscle and even a little extra around my mid-section. We’re pretty hairy, too, and I definitely meet that type. My long beard and chest hair help keep me warm when it’s cold out. So even though it’s snowing, I don’t need much coverage.

I’ve got on a long-sleeved, cream-colored thermal shirt and jeans. I go over to the door, pull on my boots, and then go about unlocking the door. I walk outside and turn, locking the cabin back up.

The woods are quiet, and my bear is enjoying the peace. He likes being outside, but a lot of times my fear overrides his need and we stay indoors. This is good for both of us, at least for a little while.

I walk for a few miles and come through the clearing next to the lake. I don’t usually venture to this side of the protected lands, but I just need a change today. New scenery. Something inside me is telling me this will be best for me and my bear. That we need a new direction and something different to see today.

Looking off in the distance, I see a dark figure on the ground. My bear is instantly alert, and I widen my stance, preparing for danger. I raise my nose, trying to catch a scent, but the wind is at my back. Slowly and silently, I walk around the edge of the lake, looking for danger from every direction.

My bear is pacing, trying to get out, but I want to be able to hold my skin. I’m always terrified that someone will try to take me again after getting captured the last time, so I’m being extra cautious.

I don’t know what possesses me to even want to investigate the dark figure. Normally, I would just turn and run. But something’s pulling me in that direction, and I need to see what it is.

As I step closer, I see the dark figure take shape. The scent still hasn’t come my way, but I can make out that it’s a person lying in the snow. My steps are tentative and slow, and I move closer and closer.

When I realize it’s a woman, my heart starts to beat faster and my steps quicken. What if she’s a shifter in trouble? I don’t know everyone in the pack yet, so this could be a member in distress.

Moving close, I see that her eyes are closed and she’s lying on her back with her arms outstretched. She must not have been here long because not much snow has fallen on her. It’s starting to come down heavier now, and she’s getting a small dusting on her face and body.

She’s got thick black hair and skin the color of cream. Her lips are blood red, and something inside of me is pulling me towards her. I can’t explain the force that makes me go to her, but something inside me knows that I must help her.

Something inside me needs to kiss her. Taste her… Brand her.

I kneel down beside her, and the sound wakes her. Her big eyes pop open, and the blue there strikes me right in the chest. Her eyes are the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. I want to get lost in them and let them carry me away. There’s something about them that’s familiar and safe, but also terrifying and confusing.

A heartbeat passes between us, and for a second I’m pulled back in time to a place I thought I’d left. Fear grips me, but then the woman smiles up at me, and all of that melts away.

“Hi,” she whispers, and I light up at the word. I start to say something back, but at that moment her scent hits me, and I my throat nearly closes up.

She’s human.

Rage pulses through me, and I start to stand. I want to get away from this human as fast as I can, but suddenly I’m dizzy with need. I inhale again, and I feel my bear trying to take over. He’s clawing inside me to get out to roar, but I hold him tight, trying to catch my brain up to my body.

Mate, my bear growls over and over, and I realize that this human is my mate. A human. The one thing in this world that I not only fear but never want to be near again is my mate.

I growl long and low, but the human doesn’t look surprised. She sits up and pushes back from me, but I reach out, snatching her ankle before she can get away.

“Mine,” I say through gritted teeth. I didn’t want this, not like this. But my body has no choice.

“Let me go.” I look into her eyes to see panic there. “Don’t, please. My brothers will worry. I know what you are, please don’t do this.”

The plea for her family pulls at my heart. How many times had I begged to be let free to find my family? How many times had I begged for news of my sister? I feel sadness for her, but then it’s followed by anger. Her kind are the ones that kept me from Winnie. This human is my mate. I have every right to take her from her human people.

“You’re mine now,” I say, pulling her off the ground and throwing her over my shoulder.

“Please let me go. I swear I won’t come back. I’ll never tell anyone.”

As the snow comes down heavier and heavier, I carry her back to my cabin. Our tracks are covered and no one will be able to find us. I’m taking my mate home, and she will get used to it.

“You can’t do this. You can’t take me.” There is so much panic in her voice that I nearly stop and go back, not wanting to upset her.

“I will treat you kindly and no harm will ever come to you as long as I live.” I take a breath and keep walking. “It’s more than your kind ever gave me.”

ONE

Night of the scenting ceremony.

It was about damn time her brothers got off their shy asses and claimed their mates. Not that Ellie didn’t like the wine and men bashing get-togethers with her girlfriends, but a girl could only take so much stupidity from men. She did love her brothers, but they needed a bit of a push to get them where they needed to be—mated.

Standing on the fringe of the field for the Scenting Ritual, she looked toward the forested hills beyond, while everyone else watched Marco and Kelly center stage. If she and Emma’s plan worked as she hoped, all her friends would finally be on their way to being her brothers’ mates.

Even Emma had a surprise coming. Emma thought she was helping Ellie with Jordan, Nicole, and Karla mating. But Ellie sent Mason out to where the girls were taping the video for a book Jordan was writing. She wasn’t waiting any longer or taking any chances of anything happening.

The situation with the Rahound pack was getting serious. It was best for the women to be mated and for the men to watch over them. The last thing she wanted was for their human bodies to be caught up in a fight with a much stronger shifter. That was one fight her wonderful friends would not win no matter how good they were at defending themselves.

Speaking of the Rahounds, Ellie searched the crowd for her destined mate, Caleb. He was the true alpha of the pack, but his uncle Rocco took control when Caleb’s father suddenly died while Caleb was away. Now that Caleb was of age and ready to lead his pack, Rocco refused to step down. She loved Caleb. Had since the moment she laid eyes on him when she’d been a little girl.

But Caleb was keeping her at arm’s length, and it started to piss her off. He could do so much with her help. Together they could get his pack back and finally move forward with living as they wanted, as a couple.

In the years under the uncle’s rule, the pack had disintegrated into a terrorized community of shifters afraid to speak out or do anything about the abuse they were taking. Now, females from the Rahound pack had been disappearing. It was rumored Rocco was giving women to those loyal to him as gifts for their support. That sick fuck. Every time she thought about how miserable he was making Caleb’s life, she wanted to claw his heart out.

They had no proof yet, but Ellie knew in her gut Rocco was committing heinous acts against his own people. Rocco was a crazy son of a bitch willing to do whatever it took to keep power. Caleb had been planning to challenge his uncle for alpha rights, but the timing wasn’t right yet, or so he kept saying.

Ellie didn’t know the reason for the holdup. But now that a girl was missing from the Wolfe clan, tension was rising, and she didn’t know how long her family would stay out of Rahound’s business.

“Well, hello, my beautiful lady.” A shiver went down Ellie’s back. Rocco’s sour breath at her ear made her stomach roll. She stepped away and turned to face him.

Steeling her spine, she tried to control the venom in her voice. “Hello, Rocco. What do you want?”

A sleazy sneer spread across his face and his eyes raked down her body. She refused to give him the satisfaction of any fear. This self-control was more than just mental on a wolf’s part. Wolves could smell emotional reactions based on the chemicals the brain secreted. Adrenaline of any kind had to be suppressed. Even if all her animal wanted was to slash her claws across his neck and watch him bleed out.

“I’m just stopping by to say hello and see how you are.” His eyes drifted to her chest. “My darling, you are far too beautiful to waste on my nephew. How about you come to the alpha house for dinner. I’ll make sure my enforcers are there to watch,” his tongue slid between his lips, “over you.”

He shouldn’t even be there. This was a private ritual, but clearly someone had informed him and he’d taken it upon himself to come. The area was available to all who wanted to wander, but Rocco knew neither he nor his men were guests. Ellie put on a fake smile. “I’d see you in hell before I willingly went anywhere with you.”

Rocco chuckled as if she’d said something cute. “You’re so like your mother. She was a spitfire, too. Definitely a nice piece of ass in her time.”

Ellie gasped then hauled back and slapped him. Fury tensed her muscles. “Don’t you speak of my mother or anyone in my family.” Her voice lowered to a growl and she fought hard to keep the wolf in check. “Just because yours is fucked up doesn’t invite you into ours. We have something you never will, Rocco.” He stretched his jaw, a red splotch forming on his cheek.

“And what is that, my nephew’s whore?”

She narrowed her eyes. Then she smiled and spoke slowly. “Respect and love from our pack.”

His eyes darkened. Ellie smelled his hate as the breeze swept it away.

“Ellie?” her mother called out. A second later, her parents and Caleb joined her. Caleb wrapped his arms around her from behind, staring at his uncle over her head. “Rocco,” he said with steel in his voice. “I didn’t think we’d see you here.” He hugged Ellie a little tighter and kissed the top of her head. “Is everything okay, Ellie?”

She relaxed in his hold. “Everything is fine. Your uncle and I were discussing our packs’ loyalties to their alphas. Or lack of.” He gave her a little squeeze. She wasn’t sure if it was his way of cheering her on or warning her off. Probably warning her off, knowing him. He didn’t want her getting involved in anything to do with his uncle or the pack war. Too fucking bad. She was his mate and she wasn’t sitting by, letting him deal with it alone. Not when he wasn’t alone, he had her.

Ellie’s dad and mom stopped beside them. Her dad shook hands with the piece of shit. “Rocco.”

He looked her dad in the eye and gave a short nod. “Tristan.” Then he grabbed up her mother’s hand and brought it to his lips. The nerve of that sick bastard to touch her mother. “Barbara. It’s always nice to see you.” His snake eyes focused on her. She took her hand back quickly, a frown marring her face.

Ellie was shocked her dad wasn’t all over Rocco, beating him into the ground. On second thought, Dad was sure in Mom’s love for only him. As she glanced at her father’s face, he seemed a bit smug. What was that all about?

Her father wrapped an arm around her mom’s shoulders and cleared his throat. “So, Rocco. Have you noticed an increasing amount of rogue wolves in the area lately?”

Rocco pursed his lips and drew down his brows; a fake contemplation expression if ever she saw one. Whatever came out of his mouth would be a lie. They all knew it.

“Now that you mention it, one of my enforcers may have mentioned seeing a strange face, but nothing other than that. Are these rogues perhaps only in your territory?” His disinterested tone went against the spark of revulsion in his eyes.

Her dad’s brow lifted. “Could be. We should all be watchful. We don’t want them straying into your area either. With you being the interim alpha until Caleb takes over, we wouldn’t want you to have to deal with an issue as touchy as this.”

Caleb’s body stiffened around Ellie. She had to stop her jaw from dropping open. She couldn’t believe her father egged Rocco like this. Rocco shoved his hands into his pockets. The stench of hate escaped into the air. Being this close together, it could’ve come from any of them.

Within the crowd, someone called out Rocco’s name. He excused himself and headed away. Ellie readied to burst. As much as she loved how strong and tough her family was, she didn’t want anyone inciting the asshole further. “Dad, oh my god. You were intentionally goading him.”

Her mother chuffed. “He’s lucky that’s all your father did. Arrogant bastard.”

Her dad wrapped her mom close and kissed her forehead. “Don’t waste mind space on him.” He looked around. “Where are your brothers? They need to be front and center to represent the pack.”

Both Ellie and her mom reacted too quickly, each starting to talk then stopped when realizing how they just blew the cover to Operation Get the Brothers Mated. They giggled at each other. Her dad lowered his head against his mate’s. “Don’t tell me. I don’t want to know, do I?”

Ellie reached for her mom’s hand. “It’s a girl thing, Dad. But we promise, you’ll be an even happier father soon.”

Caleb and her father groaned.
