100 Years Ago

Nice post from Carrie celebrating Women’s Equality Day (8/26/20) and the 19th Amendment! (100 Years!) 🙂

Carrie Ann Alexis

Hello Everyone! It seems time is flying by, yet some days it seems to stand still as we anticipate when our lives will be back to normal as we catch glimpses of hope navigating through this pandemic.  Hope everyone is safe and well!

Some of you may know that I started writing and posting to my blog when I participated in Blogbattle.  Through the Blogbattle community I was introduced to different genres from the other writers.  I would leave comments like I could NEVER write a historical fiction, or a western.  Well that prompted a challenge from our host Rachael, she challenged me to write a western.  I didn’t do it right away, but I eventually did it, and actually enjoyed it.  Though I still stood on the belief that I couldn’t do a historical or period piece.  Well low and behold, the Blogbattle guidelines were revamped and a not…

#NewRelease “TRIED & (Still) TRUE: Old Wisdom for a New Generation” by Erik Tyler

cover

~~~
The author of The Best Advice So Far introduces a witty and engaging book that infuses time-tested proverbs with new energy, offers practical strategies for success and happiness to a new generation, and beautifully humanizes the very real people who penned these tidbits of gritty wisdom throughout history. TRIED & (Still) TRUE proves that just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s boring—and that while language, culture and technology may change with time, we as human beings remain much more alike than perhaps we’d thought.
Despite their not having had laser teeth whitening or social media followings or audiences of thousands paying $500 a head to attend conferences in order to hear what they had to say, our grandmothers and great-great-grandpappies (all of whom, mind you, were young and quite hip in their day)… knew stuff.
Important stuff.
They were smart people. Resourceful. Tenacious.
And they’d learned a thing or two about what really matters:
How to live at peace in a war-torn world.
How to stretch a dollar during the worst of times.
How to navigate conflict and to be a good neighbor.
How to have character in the face of trials.
How to be truly happy, come what may.
To modern ears, the speech these old souls used may sound quaint, outdated—even archaic. Yet the wisdom they passed down and the principles for living remain every bit as powerful as they ever were.
The Name Game continues …
Nothing like good friends…except friends who are also writers! 😁💜
Just 4 My Books
If you read my previous post, you’ll know I’m a tad curious about how the names we’re given as babies can later reflect who we are.
Pardon? You haven’t read it? Then you’ll not be aware of my “life-taking” qualities then … you’d best take a look back, quickly now … I’m “overpowering” too 😉
I mentioned there was someone I wanted to feature, someone who truly lives up to her name. This lovely lady is a fellow author, she’s a member of the same Women’s Fiction writing group, and she just about epitomises her name with her generosity, warmth, humour, mild coffee addiction, and kindness. She’s also – I’m delighted to say – a great friend of mine, who makes me laugh, cry and repeatedly bang my head on the desk …
Please, let me hear a huge cheer for Felicia Welch-Reevers, aka the author, Felicia Denise.
The Second CupCover
by Sarah Marie Graye
Genre: Contemporary Fiction/Women’s Fiction/Romance
Would your life unravel if someone you knew committed suicide? Theirs did.
Faye knows her heart still belongs to her first love, Jack. She also knows he might have moved on, but when she decides to track him down, nothing prepares her for the news that he’s taken his own life. Faye is left wondering how to move forward – and whether or not Jack’s best friend Ethan will let her down again.
And the news of Jack’s death ripples through the lives of her friends too. Abbie finds herself questioning her marriage, and wondering if she was right to leave her first love behind. Poor Olivia is juggling her job and her boyfriend with supporting her friends and trying to deal with a death of her own. And Jack’s death has hit Beth the hardest, even though she never knew him.
Is Beth about to take her own life too?
The Second Cup is an intense, slow-paced novel, where four friends take it in turns to tell the story of what happens after Jack’s suicide. The author has skillfully interwoven third-person flashbacks in amongst their voices to add a real richness and depth to this heart-wrenching story. This is dark chick-lit and intelligent women’s fiction at its best.
Jean's Writing
It seems that way.
I haven’t slept much this week. Each night I’ve tossed and turned watching the clock as my mind raced. Often pain and discomfort that keep me awake but the last few nights this was not the case. No, the events of the past week rushed at my thoughts like a swarm of bees evicted from their hive.
This is a writing blog. But, is there anything more important to write about than what is happening around us?
In times of crisis as well as celebration, it is the arts that express our humanity.
Painters put images on canvas, singers raise their voices in song, photographers capture the moment, and writers write. We write in newspapers, books and now the internet. We write to preserve, share, and inform.
Today I’m sharing. A memory that has stayed with me more so than any other from my young childhood.
