EXCERPT

Will has rented out the flat above his, to Kayleigh. He’s in love with her, and they’ve hooked up a few times, although she doesn’t feel the same. Will’s fallen into dealing drugs to make ends meet. A new bloke has moved into the building opposite his, and Will has suspicions about him.

I know who shot the crow. It’s that weirdo who lives in the top flat of the building opposite mine. I’ve seen him, up in that protruding attic window, with his binoculars. That’s why I work in the back room, even though it’s dark. He watches Kayleigh. I know he does. I ought to tell the police. I ought to tell the police a lot of things, but if I did, someone would tell them lots of things about me, too, and I can’t have that.

#5DayMiniBlogBlitz “Coldharbour” by John Mead

~~~
~~~

The Met Police’s Major Investigation Team East has its hands full: a rash of tit for tat gang related stabbings, a strangled housewife, the decomposed remains of a woman found in a ditch and more to come. Adding to their woes is their boss, Chief Inspector Matthew Merry, being distracted by his problems at home.

For Matthew’s wife, Kathy, her only concern is dealing with the aftermath of being drugged and raped by a co-worker. Will the trial of the man responsible be enough to give her the justice she demands. Or, as her therapist states, is it revenge she really desires. She doesn’t know. As her emotions see-saw from elation to depression, her only certainty is that her husband seems more concerned about his work than her.

And Matthew is only too aware of his failings both at home and work. But the police machine grinds on, seeking information and sifting evidence — justice is not their concern.

#GuestPost “Eternal Forever” by Syl Waters

Oh, I do love to write beside the seaside!

by Syl Waters

Out of my window I can see a fat seagull. I don’t know if it’s a he or a she (how do you tell – note for self to check on google). Note to reader, having consulted the expertise of the web I have learned it’s very difficult to tell the difference between a male and female seagull. For your reference, the male may have a bit brighter and more colourful plumage, but the difference is so subtle, so I’ve read, only experienced bird watchers can tell the difference.

I am not an experienced bird watcher.

And so I’m wondering if this seagull is fat or pregnant.

The internet hole looked longer this time and so I have resisted. I can tell you though that a seagull usually lays its eggs at the beginning of May and has a clutch of three. The number three may have special significance in seagull circles, as it’s also after three weeks the eggs begin to hatch.

And so my mind wanders to what a baby seagull looks like and if I’ve even seen one?

Cue google images.

You may or may not be interested to learn baby seagulls (from my expert scanning of images online), appear to be dappled grey. I find myself pondering how such greyness can turn into such strong swipes of black and white in later years. I mean, when you look at a seagull it’s colours are very striking, not striking in a zebra sort of way, but still the body is always white and the wings are always black.

Isn’t it amazing how nature knows where to put the colours?

The baby seagull (also known as fluffy chicks – I’m not sure that’s right…), also is missing the red slash on its yellow beak that adults acquire later in life.

I’ve always thought the red was from the blood of a seagull’s victims.

That could be unfair. I don’t know how dangerous seagulls are, but I bet they aren’t as bad as swans.

Swans scare me.

You can ask my other half, we were out on a hot day having a romantic walk by the canal and I wouldn’t walk past a swan which was sat hissing. He took the mick, royally.

Me? I walked off in the other direction. Romance or saving my life? I’ll save my life every time.

And while writing this, I’m now starting to wonder if my fear of swans is undeserved and I’m ruining my chance of romance. And so I’ve searched the net for ‘are swans dangerous’. There’s a report from the BBC in 2012 called ‘Who, What, Why: How dangerous are swans?’ In it they detail a couple of swan attacks where the birds capsized kayaks and attacked rowers.

I am alarmed.

I would read more, but I don’t know if any of this is helpful for me overcoming my existing fear of swans.

I close the tabs and look back out of the window at the fat seagull. I wonder if soon she’ll give birth to some fluffy chicks? Whether true or not, that’s what I’m always going to call baby seagulls from now on. J

EXCERPT

The following is extracted from the first chapter of The Cure. Paige has just learned that she has early-onset dementia, and she’s struggling to wrap her mind around its implications for her and her life.

Redding Falls, Georgia

Present Day

Day 1

Chapter One

Paige Bergeron

It started out as a bad day all around and I was ready for my luck to change. It comes in threes they say, whoever they are. It’s been pouring rain since yesterday morning and the beavers have rebuilt their dam and flooded the mile-long main road leading into my cabin. My trusty old Honda doesn’t have four-wheel drive so I can’t even venture out over the muddy back road. And Dr. Willis informed me that yes, she’s sure I do have early onset Alzheimer’s because the tests came back showing the telltale deposits in my brain. I’m only forty-four. Too young for such a dire diagnosis.

One of my grandmas had dementia, maybe Alzheimer’s, maybe not. My folks died in their fifties in a boating accident near St. Thomas almost twenty years ago, so I’ll never know if one or both of them might have gotten it had they aged. I do know the dreaded signs are there for me. I forgot Selma’s birthday. I took my pets to the vet for their appointment on the wrong day. Words escape me when I try to describe or explain things. Every day I wake up wondering what new thing will go wrong.

I walked out on the covered deck at the back of my cabin and listened to the creek rushing over the rocks below.  I love April in north Georgia, when it’s getting green and blossomy, with a chill still in the air. Springtime is my favorite, so much promise of good things to come. I tried not to let my thoughts sink into despair. My daughter would have been a young woman by now, and able to take care of me. Maybe it’s for the best she wasn’t anchored to a demented mother. Isn’t it, Rose? But no, I stopped myself from going down that road. I needed to focus on what was around me, right here and now: the damp earthy smell, the blur of soft pinks and greens surrounding me in the trees. Not think about her, about how long I’d be able to do for myself, or even know what I was doing.

I’d taken a few days off from my job as a pediatric physician’s assistant at Redding Falls Medical Center to lie back and figure out what I wanted to do, what I could do. I was planning to go back tomorrow if I could find the place…. Just kidding.

My three cats, tabby littermates April, May and Juney, hovered with me under the overhang of the deck, tails up, as though willing the hard rain to stop, eager to be chasing our endless population of moles and voles. Will my pets wind up in the wild one day when I forget to care for them? All of a sudden it felt like everything had a time stamp on it, but the dates looked fuzzy and I couldn’t read them, only guess at what they were trying to reveal.

Thank you for stopping by Nesie’s Place today, Kathy!

Your latest release is book two in the thriller trilogy, A Path to Deception. What inspired the trilogy?

Two is actually the second part of my first trilogy when I started writing. The inspiration to write a book came from wanting to leave a legacy for my grandchildren and the subject of art as vehicle to launder money has always fascinated me.

Book two (TWO) takes us the Paris where the backstory of how the attack occurs in Paris. ‘I was born in Walsall, grew up in the West Midlands and now live in Telford with my two cats, Boris and Tai. After working in the health and social care sector for over thirty years, I have now taken early retirement to write the trilogy that has been rooted in my head for most of my life.

Another Shot is the first book in the Shots trilogy, which is based on a first love relationship I had as a teenager. It tells the story of Freddie and Jo-Jo, who are reunited in a coffee shop three decades after the end of their teenage romance. How they originally met, why they parted, what happens in their lives apart, and what happens when they reunite is all told through a series of first person vignettes. The second book, An Extra Shot, will be published in July 2019. I am currently working on the final installment.

Getting these stories down on paper has been a cathartic process. I hope you enjoy them. ‘
