5/5 Stars!

Second-grade teacher, Amelie Graye, has not had an easy life. But she is finally settled, living a quiet life in her pack waiting for her destined mate. She finds out Royal wolf Zayne Lyall is her mate, and while he already feels the thrall and she doesn’t, Amelie is still drawn to him.

Their relationship is threatened when Amelie is caught between Zayne and her first love, Knox, and a two-hundred-year-old grudge. She tries to negotiate peace between the two, but it soon becomes apparent the Royal wolves will meet in battle.

Though they both suffered extreme loss in their lives, Zayne and Amelie were polar opposites. He was closed off, distant, and held his emotions inside, while Amelie was open, friendly, and quite talkative. I enjoyed watching his character evolve as he did everything he could to keep his mate safe, including sleeping outside her home every night. They make a great couple and I loved how when they finally let their guards down, they talked to each other, holding nothing back.

Amelia was a strong, independent character. Even though her cousin and friends all were mated, she didn’t sulk and whine, but was a strong, positive force loved and included in everything by her friends.

She let me down a bit when Knox showed up though. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but felt she allowed him to get too close. The Royal  Pack was her family and Zayne was her mate, and she should have trusted their warnings one-hundred-percent from the beginning. However, she found her efforts to broker peace were futile and no match for the hatred and anger between Zayne and Knox.

Supporting characters all have great personalities and I enjoyed their banter. I even enjoyed villains Knox and his sister, Zara. As they tried to appear friendly and accommodating, I could feel their contempt for the Lyalls and Storms rumbling just beneath the surface.

Excellent writing and well-developed characters not only make this a great read but make me want to read more of the Royal series!

Enjoy!

I watch Colin and Zayne on the back porch, and it’s hard not to notice how handsome Zayne is. He’s over a hundred and fifty years older than me, but he doesn’t look a day over thirty. His beard is short and well-kept, maybe even slightly rugged. He’s not your typical wolf. But, I’m not going to lie, he fascinates me.

Colin walks in through the back door, and I turn away to make it look like I wasn’t staring. I figured Zayne would follow him, but when the door doesn’t open again, I peer over my shoulder to see him still on the deck, his attention turned to the mountains.

“Is he coming in?” Kami asks Colin.

“Oh, yeah,” Colin answers. “He said he just needs a minute.”

Colin busies himself with helping Kami, but I can’t take my eyes away from Zayne. An idea pops into my head, and I smile. Moving over to the wine, I fill up my glass and turn for the door.

“Where are you going?” Kami asks.

I wink at her over my shoulder. “You say people love talking to me, so I’m going to see if it’s true.”

Her eyes widen. “You’re going out there?”

Both her and Colin stare at me as if I’m about to walk into the lion’s den. But, then again, that doesn’t scare me. Nothing does anymore. Zayne’s just a wolf who doesn’t like to socialize with people. Unfortunately for him, I’m not going to give him a choice.

“Hopefully, he doesn’t leave me hanging,” I say, backing up out of the room.

Their mouths gape, but they don’t try to stop me. When I get to the door, I take a deep breath and walk outside. Zayne tenses when I step onto the deck, but he doesn’t acknowledge me. I move closer, but there’s about three feet of distance between us. Bringing the wine to my lips, I slowly sip some down, wondering if he’ll speak to me first. Of course, he doesn’t, but that doesn’t shock me.

Turning my body toward him, I smile and wait for him to look at me. “I’m Amelie. I don’t think we’ve been formally introduced. I’m a good friend of Laila’s.”

Being around royals is always interesting. Zayne slowly turns his head my way, and it’s the first time I’ve noticed how blue his eyes are. I can feel his power more so than any other wolf I’ve been around. He’s strong.

“I know who you are,” he says, his voice low in that sexy sort of way. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

It pained him to hear the roughness of her voice. A solid reminder that he’d almost lost her. The battle that had waged inside him since meeting her had amped back up to full scale.
When the nurse was gone, Ben tried again to explain himself. “I was engaged once, you know.”
“Nope. I had no idea,” Layla answered without looking up from her drink. Her apparent indifference hit him right in the heart. “You haven’t said much about yourself.”
“Her name was Lauren. According to her, I’m not fit for a serious adult relationship.”
“Just because it didn’t work out with her you consider yourself unable to care about anyone else?”
Man, she isn’t making this easy on me.“It goes much deeper than that, Layla. I’ve seen things, done things.”
“We all have regrets, believe me.” She sounded sad and a little wistful. Like she had some serious secrets of her own.
“I was in the Air Force. Special forces. My job… well, things happened. Things I could never get over. Lauren knew it, and now, after messing things up with her so badly, so do I.”
Layla set her cup down on the bedside table. “So, because things didn’t work out with one relationship, you left your home, your family, and a job I think you loved to come live on a mountain, sentencing yourself to a lifetime of loneliness and self-pity?”
He exhaled slowly. “You don’t know what it’s like to live in my head. Besides, didn’t you basically do the same thing?”
“This isn’t about me!”
He leaned forward, looking her in the eyes. “Are you saying you don’t have any secrets of your own? Secrets that sent you to the same isolated mountain as me? Secrets that seem to want to see you suffer, maybe even die?”
