PROLOGUE

SHELBY

Would I ever learn? I’d spent too many years looking out for someone else, and here I was doing the same thing again. Holly had disappeared after I sent her to the rear pantry for potatoes. She’d been gone long enough to plant and dig them up. I needed to get those potatoes boiling to feed hungry stomachs.

I left the kitchen to find her. The hallway to the pantry needed better lighting or maybe fewer corners. In any event, uneasiness swirled around me like a dust storm.

A plea to stop met my ears. I raced to the rear pantry fearing what I’d find.

Four women circled Holly. One held her arms behind her back, and the other three took turns punching her small body. My stomach tightened. I’d been in her shoes, and I’d do anything to stop the women from beating her.

“Please, stop,” Holly said through a raspy breath. For one who was eighteen years old, she looked fifteen.

“Hey, what’s going on?” I forced my voice to rise above my fear of them.

“Stay out of it, freak.”

I’d run into this woman before, and she had a mean streak. “What’s she done to you?” I eyed the woman.

“None of your business unless you want the same.”

“It’s okay, Shelby. I can handle this.” Holly’s courageous words would only earn her another fist to her battered face.

And it did.

“Enough!” I drew my fists and stepped nose to nose with the leader.

The four turned on me. I’d lived through their beatings before, and I would again. I fell and the kicks to my ribs told me a few would be broken.

A whistle blew, and prison guards stopped the gang from delivering any more blows to Holly or me. They clamped cuffs on the four and left Holly and me on the floor with reassurance help was on its way.

I’d been her age once and forced to grow up fast. No one had counseled me but hard knocks, securing an education, and letting Jesus pave the way. I’d vowed to keep my eyes and ears open for others less fortunate.

Holly’s lip dripped blood and a huge lump formed on the side of her head. I crawled to her. “Are you okay?”

“Not sure. Thank you for standing up for me. I thought they would kill me. Why do they do this? I’ve never done a thing to them.”

“Because they can. They want to exert power, control. Stick by me, and I’ll do my best to keep you safe.”

CHAPTER 1

I tightened my grip on the black trash bag slung over my shoulder containing my personal belongings—parole papers, a denim shoulder bag from high school, a ragged backpack, fifty dollars gate money, my driver’s license at age sixteen, and the clothes I’d worn to prison fifteen years ago.

The bus slowed to pick me up outside the prison gates, its windshield wipers keeping pace with the downpour. The rain splattered the flat ground in a steady cadence like a drum leading a prisoner to execution. I stepped back to avoid the splash of muddy water from the front tires dipping into a pothole. Air brakes breathed in and out, a massive beast taking respite from its life labors.

The door hissed open. At the top of the steps, a balding driver took my ticket, no doubt recognizing the prison’s release of a for- mer inmate. He must have been accustomed to weary souls who’d paid their debts to society. The coldness glaring from his graphite eyes told me he wagered I’d be locked up again within a year. Maybe less. I couldn’t blame him. The reoffend stats for female convicts like me soared high.

For too many years, I imagined the day I left prison would be bathed in sunlight. I’d be enveloped in welcoming arms and hear encouraging words from my family.

Reality hosted neither.

I moved to the rear of the bus, past a handful of people, and found a seat by myself. All around me were those engrossed in their devices. My life had been frozen in time, and now that I had permission to thaw, the world had changed. Was I ready for the fear digging its claws into my heart?

The cloudy view through the water-streaked window added to my doubts about the future. I’d memorized the prison rules, even prayed through them, and now I feared breaking one unknowingly.

The last time I’d breathed free air, riding the bus was a social gathering—in my case, a school bus. Kids chatted and laughter rose above the hum of tires. Now an eerie silence had descended.

I hadn’t been alone then.

My mind drifted back to high school days, when the future rested on maintaining a 4.0 average and planning the next party. Maintaining my grades took a fraction of time, while my mind schemed forbidden fun. I’d dreamed of attending college and exploring the world on my terms.

Rebellion held bold colors, like a kaleidoscope shrouded in black light. The more I shocked others, the more I plotted something darker. My choices often seemed a means of expressing my creativity. While in my youth I viewed life as a cynic. By the time I was able to see a reflection of my brokenness and vowed to change, no one trusted me.

All that happened . . .

Before I took the blame for murdering my brother-in-law. Before I traded my high school diploma and a career in interior design for a locked cell.

Before I spent years searching for answers.

Before I found new meaning and purpose.

How easy it would be to give in to a dismal, gray future when I longed for blue skies. I had to prove the odds against me were wrong.

Or will an age old vendetta rob him of a blissful future with his bonded mate?

The door to the cabin opens, and Amelie steps out with her caramel-colored hair in a ponytail and dressed in a tank top and yoga pants. It’s fifteen degrees outside, but the cold doesn’t bother us. The smell of snow approaches, and I can tell it’s going to come down hard within the hour. Looking up at the sky, it’s dark, and the clouds are thick.

Amelie plugs in the Christmas lights on her porch and looks up at them when she gets into the yard. I’ve never seen someone so fascinated with the holidays. But she’d be appalled if she could see my house at Christmas time. I’ve never cared about decorating or celebrating, at least not in the last thirty years after losing Alina. Something tells me I might have to change that. If this is going to work between us, I’ll have no choice but to see things differently. The only problem is that I have no idea how to do that.

Amelie runs through the woods in human form, and I follow behind her, making sure to keep my presence hidden. I’m not ready for her to know I’m there yet. The lake is a few miles into the woods, and her movements are smooth and concise as she swerves in and out of the trees. The only other people I’ve seen move like that are my brothers. She had to have learned it from Micah. I’ve envied him for being so close to her. It’s even made me a little jealous, but I know he’s never tried anything with her. When he comes back to town, things might be a little different. I’m hoping Amelie will let me train her instead of him.

The lake comes into view, and I slow my pace. Amelie stops by the water and blows out a breath, watching the steam billow into the wind. She raises her arms in the air and stretches, exposing her bare stomach as her shirt lifts up. The need in me rises, and I close my eyes. All I can think about is taking her in my arms and making her mine.

“Fuck,” I hiss under my breath. My cock hardens at the thought of her naked and spread out beneath me. Stepping behind the tree, I lean against it to regain my composure. I’m always in control, but around Amelie, I’ve lost all sense of it. Taking a deep breath, I let it out slow until everything goes back to normal. When it does, I unleash my power so Amelie can sense me.

EXCERPT

“That is one badass knife, Sierra Betts.”

She blushed, not so much from his praise as from the rumble of his voice when he took it reverent and low. But she tried to keep things light. “The pink sheath was a dead giveaway, huh?”

“Doesn’t matter what it looks like. Just matters what it can do. I’ll admit, if you had to survive, that knife would do you a lot of good.”

“Then why do I hear a ‘but’?” She slid her knife back where it belonged and fastened it to her bag.

“A good knife will keep your heart beating—food in your belly and a little protection. But an axe will keep you warm.”

Sierra might have laughed if Forrest’s face hadn’t been so earnest. “You said it stayed on the side of your bed.” Thoughts about Forrest and beds and being kept warm infiltrated her mind. “Your knife can cut small things. And a blade like that is long enough and thick enough for you to get a good baton. But it can’t cut you a big log, or build a real shelter, or butcher whatever you catch. It can’t do the same thing as Old Faithful here …”

Forrest reached toward the side of his blanket to pick up his tool. “Please tell me you didn’t name your axe.” “I name all my axes. It makes them feel special.” Sierra laughed again. “You have given this entirely too much thought.” “Go ahead. Make fun. But you’d change your mind if you were ever out in the wilderness with me. I’d have us living in the lap of luxury.”

Forrest’s big talk got her imagining again. Her mind flashed to the two of them, stranded alone in the woods, surviving together, making their own fire, catching their own food, and staying even warmer from body heat.

“You said you majored in psych,” she baited with a sly smile. “Have you ever considered the deeper significance to why you carry that big axe everywhere?”

His eyes twinkled and the chuckle he let out was rich and deep. “Maybe,” he admitted.

“Have you ever considered the deeper significance to why you keep up that tough-girl routine? About how you want me and everyone else to think you’re some sort of ball-breaker?” She didn’t answer. She wished she had. Her silence prompted him to keep talking—to say all manner of thing she wasn’t ready to hear.

“I’ve got your number, Sierra Betts. I see what you don’t want anyone to see—the part of you that’s soft, that cares so much. It’s beautiful.”

I see what you don’t want anyone to see … She wanted to scoff and look away and dream up some flip response. Only, his gray gaze kept her in his thrall. His irises were light in that moment, the hue of clouds after a storm chasing the darkness away with the light of the sun. They were earnest and wise and they made her want to tell him things. Some part of her wanted to tell him about Shasta and about Jake Stapleton. But a bigger part of her was just plain scared.

With her next blink, she looked away, head turned and gaze set back out on the gorgeous vista. The heat of his attention warmed her face. When he, too, turned his head and fixed his gaze back on their surroundings, she thought the moment had passed. It hadn’t. His voice was softer when he spoke again.

“The first time I ever saw you was on Little Pigeon Creek, on the part that splits off after the falls. It was last summer, a few weeks after the Fourth of July.”

Sierra remembered the day she’d seen him there, at the narrowest stretch of the creek. It was an off-trail shortcut park workers used to cross between different sides.

“That wasn’t until September. Just before Labor Day,” she corrected gently. “I never ran into you at the creek until fall.”

“I said the first time I saw you—not the first time we met.” Heat prickled her nose. This was a confession. “I’ve taken a shortcut across that creek twenty times. But when I came up on you helping that cub, I just … stopped.”

Goose bumps rose on Sierra’s flesh. What she had done that day had been extreme. She’d never mentioned it to a single soul. It had also been the right thing to do. A bear cub had gotten caught in fishing netting that had floated its way down the creek from some point upstream. And the cub couldn’t disentangle himself.

But that hadn’t been the dangerous part—the dangerous part had been the fully-grown mother bear, who saw that her cub needed help but whose every instinct should have been to keep other animals away from her baby.

Understanding the mama bear’s predicament, Sierra had been cautious. She had approached slowly—carefully—hidden the knife in her pocket until she’d absolutely needed to use it to cut away the net. She’d approached the cub carefully and slowly. But when it had been time to set him free, she’d made quick work of cutting him loose.

“At first, I stayed back out of caution,” Forrest continued. “I didn’t want to spook the mama bear. But I got my tranq gun on her right away. I was aimed and ready to fire. And I’ll admit, I was spitting mad—rehearsing in my head the earful I was gonna give you about pulling a stunt like that, alone. But then I saw how gentle you were, and how you somehow got that mama bear to believe you weren’t gonna hurt her baby … it was magic. I knew then, crazy or not, I wanted to know you.”

Sierra’s nose prickled even more and some emotion she couldn’t identify welled within her—whatever it was called when you felt completely laid bare.

“Why didn’t you announce yourself, after I freed the cub and he went back to his mother?”

“Honestly? I didn’t want to intrude on any of it. There was something sacred about it. But I did follow you back. You looked shaky, afterward. I wanted to make sure you got back to the station okay.

“Look,” he said in a way that made her lift her gaze. “I like you, Sierra. And now that you don’t hate me so much anymore, I’m hoping I’ve got a shot at you liking me back.”

“I never hated you,” she corrected. It was easier than responding to what he’d said. His expression changed, his eyes crinkling at the corners and his lips subtly turning up. “Then maybe you’ll say yes if I ask you out on a date.”

5/5 Stars!

Part of a male-dominated concert tour crew for a self-possessed female pop star, four very different women find they have more in common than gender.

Lily, once mega-star Sadie Estrada’s close friend, is now her personal assistant… and whipping girl. Carrying scars from an assault during her youth, she’s left all semblance of her meager existence as a yoga instructor behind. She lives only to make sure everything in Sadie’s life stays balanced; never thanked when they do and blamed for when they don’t. How long can she live this life?

Guitar tech Kat hides her sexual preference and lives a life of regret for walking away from the only woman she could be herself with. Will she ever feel that way again?

Though she left behind a small singing career in Nashville to sign on as a tour assistant, Brooke is determined to make it as a music sensation. All she needs is the chance to sing with Sadie onstage. Her boyfriend’s lifelong friendship with Sadie got her the tour job, but will it help her realize her dream?

Military brat Alex carries the death of her father and the mysterious death of her grandfather close to her heart. She knows her distant mother, brother, and stepfather share a secret they refuse to share with her. It leaves her at odds with her family and in life. A relationship with the older Connor and an unexpected pregnancy give Alex hope until she loses the baby. Her grief and Connor’s indifference cause her to return to the tour though she’s lost her position as head electrician.

With a break in the European leg of Sadie’s tour, the four women run off for a Tuscany vacation where secrets are shared and pain is no longer held at bay. Some burdens carried for a lifetime are shed while some are made worse.

Where Are We Tomorrow is great women’s fiction about the trauma that shapes our lives and how we exacerbate it by holding on to it too long. It also shows while there may be no immediate happily-ever-afters, there’s always hope.

Enjoy!

Tia is going to die. By my hands. I mean, how would you react if your little sister’s school project had sent you stumbling back to the French Revolution?

With no way to get home?

Not a clue, a hint, a bread crumb, a damn carrier pigeon. Nothing.

Yeah, exactly. You’d kill her, too.

And now I’m having to play noble with these powdered-wig-wearing snobs and pray no one suspects me of being a witch. It’s not like 18th century France was a great time for those of us who are magically inclined.

Great, just flipping great.

Oh, my name is Keyona, by the way. I’ve been in this witching game for years, but the shit storm my sister has gotten me into…I have no idea, which means she has no idea which means I’m totally screwed.

I’m going to kill her.

Anyway, like I said, I’m Keyona, and I’m an involuntary time traveler.

Blurb

Welcome to Dayton Valley, ranch country with a sum population of 9022. Sounds idyllic, and it is… until it isn’t

Kitty

I’m back to live and work in the place I called home as a kid, Dayton Valley. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed it, or the people. One person in particular—Jefferson Delaney. He was hot at fifteen, but now at forty-eight, damn he’s matured well.

I don’t think my lady parts will ever get over our reunion. Let’s just say we wasted no time in getting to know each other again.

Having sex with your high school boyfriend after thirty years apart isn’t too forward, right?

Jefferson

When I was fifteen there was a girl who rocked my world. She left and I got over it. Now she’s back and boy did she grow up—curves to die for and lips for sin.

As she’s planning my son’s wedding, I know I should keep it professional. Sometimes though, you’ve just gotta go with your gut, and when a woman needs some special kind of attention, it really doesn’t matter how swift the reunion!

Distracting your son’s wedding planner with an orgasm isn’t wrong, right?

Dayton Valley… where the men are hard, and the women are horny
