#BookReview “Hands of Women” by Stacy M. Wray

5/5 Stars!

Most women would think Haddie Kellar leads a charmed life.

The educated fifty-year-old spends her days lost among her plants and herbs creating homeopathic remedies to help others. She and her loving husband, Sam, have been together since college, and he fully supports her endeavors, never questioning or second-guessing her.

But Haddie’s life isn’t perfect. She was unable to have children. Sam shared the pain of not having a family and it made them closer. He never resented her or walked away.

However, it was Haddie who walked away… from her university teaching position. She loved sharing her knowledge of biology and botany with her students, but when she was passed over for tenure, she’d had enough. If it weren’t bad enough Haddie was overlooked because she was female, the man who received tenure sabotaged her chances by using her gender against her.

Haddie knows she’s the latest casualty in the war on women. And it seems everywhere she looks, women are treated as second-class citizens, dominated, subjugated, violated, and abused by the patriarchy, misogyny, and arrogance of men.

It shouldn’t be this way, and someone needs to do something.

When Haddie stumbles upon an anonymous way to punish abusers and allow women to reclaim their dignity, she knows that someone will be her.

Her remedy takes off, and Haddie is elated at the justice Hands of Women claims. But what happens when Sam finds out, and an investigation threatens to unmask her and end her project?

Such a thought-provoking read!

I had no sympathy for these fictionalized men. They got what they deserved. But unfortunately, they have too many real-life counterparts who are never held accountable.

From fathers to husbands and bosses, nearly every woman (and girls) can tell of at least one time in their lives when they were victimized in some way by a man. Haddie Kellar carries the frustration and rage of every woman and it spurs her on.

Haddie ultimately wants one thing, across the board equality. She doesn’t understand why women can’t be appreciated and allowed to succeed on their merits and capabilities, instead of being judged for their gender.

None of us understand that, Haddie.

While she appreciates her supportive husband and wishes more men were like him, I felt Haddie also took Sam for granted. Perhaps not in a negligent way, but she knew he’d forgive her anything because of his love for her.

Well, almost anything. Maybe.

I was also concerned Haddie’s cure could outgrow her and be used for the wrong reasons, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. She’s a sharp lady.

When her back’s to the wall, Haddie Kellar has a decision to make. Will she continue doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, or will she risk it all to better the lives of marginalized women?

Kudos to Stacy M. Wray for this well-written, timely read on a serious real-world issue and I recommend it to all women… and men.

Enjoy!

Haddie Kellar is passionate about three things: her marriage, her doctorate in botany, and women’s rights. It’s the injustices of the latter that sends her conscience plummeting into a dark lens of how to level the playing field, even if it goes against the grain of morality.

After creating a gel that alters the personality, Haddie feels invincible after women from all over take action against men who have wronged them. Her movement is working and everyone is noticing, even though her identity has been kept secret. So, when her loving, supportive husband discovers that she’s behind the shocking events revealed on the news, it rocks her world.

Haddie knows what she’s doing is unlawful, but she refuses to stop, knowing she’s improving women’s lives. But how far will she go? It’s not only her but all the ladies that she’s recruited for her cause.

When her identity is finally discovered, Haddie feels trapped, especially when they come knocking on her door. Will this be the end of her crusade?

Hands of women everywhere have been changing the offensive behaviors of men. So, how can it be so wrong when the outcome is so convincingly right?

She heard the deep pounding of drums a short distance away. Black Bear planned strategies in the Council House the entire day and she wondered if he were at the square now attending the dance. She ran a brush through her hair and allowed it to drape over her shoulders in thick waves of silk. Her heart thumped lightly taking her breath away as she pushed aside the curtain of her room to brave the coming evening.

Storyteller sat near the fire sewing diligently on another garment. She gazed up and stopped. “You are a vision, my dear.”

“Thanks to you and your fine talents,” she said, turning to give Storyteller a view from every angle, “I feel beautiful. I’m grateful.”

“That’s because you are beautiful.”

“Will you join the celebration tonight? Accompany me to the Town Square.”

“I will attend shortly. You go ahead without me. Have a pleasant time and try to keep open to our ways. Our event is quite joyous, but you must be kind in your judgment. Remember, this is not the colonies, nor England.”

“I will.” Bryanna stepped out into the cool night.

The Town Square rested in front of the Council House at the bottom of the mound. The pulsation of the drums grew louder as she came nearer. A rhythm of flutes fluidly intertwined with the drums creating an enticing temptation for the body to move and sway.

The Square came into view as she rounded the mound. Rattles joined in with the instruments while the center of the Square remained filled with people moving in a circle to the rhythmic melody of the music.

With their backs slightly bent forward, they stomped their feet, turning first to the left, then to the right. They whirled around repeating the movements over and over as they continued in a large moving circle. She had never seen such dance.

The permeating music floated seductively over the dance, igniting a warm flame within her. Along with the music, the movement of the dance emerged just as wildly passionate in its stirring rhythm as she swayed her shoulders in and out.

They all knew precisely what to do, flawlessly keeping in unison with each other. The dance came forth untamed, and the music portrayed a tremendous strength in who these people were. Now she understood what Black Bear meant when he said exhilarating.

Colorful feathers fastened in their hair and on their clothing bounced and swayed with every twist and turn they made. The feathers transformed into brief flashes of color melding together as they danced without any signs of fatigue.

Warriors wearing animal skins on their heads jumped into the circle imitating the kill and skinning of an animal.

This was a far cry from the gentle dance in England. She remembered tender flowing music, one person facing the other in minuet with hands gently touching. As these people danced before her, its strangeness loomed within her, leaving an overshadowing loneliness for what she once knew and loved.

The music changed, and they stomped and swayed to a new dance. Simply standing there, with a babe’s new innocence of their customs, she became gravely aware of her awkwardness.

She perused the Square, searching for the one familiar face whose tolerance would help fortify her fading nerve. Sitting among a group of men at the edge of the Square were a pair of familiar eyes that locked onto hers the moment her gaze came upon him. A smile adorned his face as he stood and approached her.

Bryanna’s breath caught in her throat as Black Bear strode toward her. His smile remained affixed on his face and she labored to keep her gaze upon it although the temptation to gawk at his body overwhelmed her. His breechcloth barely covered his extremities revealing long muscular limbs, honey-browned from life under the sun.

The currents of shivers returned moving throughout her body as she fought not to reveal her feelings. Still, she noticed no shirt on his back. The smoothness of his chest only accentuated his massive size and strength. A string of white wampum shells lay comfortably around his neck and dipped downward across the swollen hills of his sun-kissed chest. He’d tied back his black straight hair leaving high protruding cheekbones and glistening white teeth.

Concentrating solely upon his face did not comfort her. The strange quivering in her veins had a mind of its own traveling the full length of her limbs to the tips of her sensitive breasts. Her bosom heaved with each difficult breath as he halted before her.

“I find your extraordinary beauty quite imposing upon my manners as a gentleman. Those manners are quite difficult to sustain.” His chest maneuvered in and out as his hungry copper eyes consumed a path into the pit of her core.

EXCERPT

“Are you done hiding from me?” The smooth tenor jump-started her heart.

Paige whipped around to see Brenden leaning in the door frame. A smile curved his lips as she struggled through heavy breaths. “Hi… Hiding from you?” She gulped down a mixture of fear and excitement as butterflies began dancing in her stomach. She wasn’t sure if she wanted them to stop because at least the fluttery feeling confirmed she wasn’t dreaming.

He slid his hands into his pockets while his eyes intently scanned her face as if he were committing every inch to memory. “You didn’t give me a chance to tell you Happy New Year.”

A flush crept along her neck before stinging her cheeks. She peeked up, afraid of how the energy in her body was responding to Brenden. “Ditto,” she muttered. “Happy New Year! I guess chivalry does exist.”

He shrugged and began moving towards her. Face to face, he looked upon her, again studying her like a work of art. “Not sure if the thoughts I’m having of you would be deemed chivalrous, Paige.”

She felt her mouth form a little “o” while her heartbeat triple timed. The sincerity etched across Brenden’s face and the want laced within his husky voice began casting a spell, unraveling inhibitions she’d clung to for fear of failure or rejection.

“Why are you here by yourself?” He shifted his gaze beyond her to the ocean before taking a few steps to claim the space at the balcony rail.

“I could ask you the same,” she replied before returning to her place along the rail that was now a few feet from the sexiest man alive.

“True, but I suppose neither of us wants to share what we’d rather forget.”

Paige nodded. How did he know? She’d been trying to forget for the last twenty years. And now, seeing the sliver of tension twitch at Brenden’s jaw, it made her curious to learn what he wanted to forget.

“Forget?” she asked out loud, and not on purpose.

He faced her. Sweet Jesus, the man’s eyes could read a girl’s soul and betray her most private thoughts. “Don’t you want to?”

Something in him whispered to her deepest, darkest desires. Her body slowly began overriding her mind. “How?” she asked, desperate for her next breath. She then swallowed an inhale and reached up, pushing strands of his tousled hair from his face.

Brenden stepped in, closing the distance between them. He looked down into her eyes, lowered his head, and brushed his lips across hers. His fingers threaded the strands of her hair before he tilted her neck and pressed his lips to her bouncing pulse.

Her breaths became more unpredictable, fueling the sharpening ache between her legs that halted rational contemplation. Mind versus body. Never before had she been uncertain of which would win.

Another stuttering breath escaped her lips, and her eyes closed as Brenden’s teeth sank into her skin. “Mmmm…feels good.”

“Tastes good.” His body pressed harder against hers. “And now you know my most indecent thoughts.”
