Middle-aged Grace Rendell has spent a lifetime medicated and controlled.  Suffering from paranoia since childhood, she has married, has two now-teenage sons, and become a CPA, in between stays in mental hospitals. But her life isn’t one of triumph. Any show of defiance or emotion leads to disrespect from her sons, condescension from her husband, and verbal reprimands delivered in soft tones from her lifelong therapist… and an increase in medication or another stay in a mental hospital. Grace’s only other living relative, her ninety-year-old father, billionaire Barrington Pierrepoint, treats her even worse and foots the bills for her therapy. Grace is trapped in her world with no escape.

When her fears of her husband’s infidelity are confirmed, and he continues to prod her to find out the contents of her father’s will, a defiant Grace secretly stops taking her medication. Clear-headed and focused, Grace believes her husband, Eliot, intends to murder her and still her inheritance after her father’s demise. With no one to turn to, she believes her only recourse is to write about Eliot’s plans under the guise of fiction.

Joining a writing group under a pseudonym, Grace is befriended by a bestselling author who agrees to help her hone her writing skills. But when the author is murdered, everything goes sideways and Grace goes into hiding.

Befriended by a researcher, the dead author’s brother, and a group of young people trying to live life on their own terms, Grace must find out who murdered the author, and gain her independence before something happens to her father… and then to her.

Grace is a sympathetic character, and it’s easy to see what’s being done to her early on. Grace has suspicions, but the cocktail of pills she’s on make her question herself and easy to manipulate. However, her strength is obvious with each step she takes toward publicizing Eliot’s plot.

Computer hacking and snooping reveal the bad actors and confirm Grace’s suspicions, but it isn’t until she’s hypnotized by another doctor that she finds the reason for her forty-year mental imprisonment and how true it is that the love of money is the root of all evil.

Loved this one! Family and friends become enemies, and enemies become friends as this mystery is unwound one twist at a time. I highly recommend it.

Enjoy!

Synopsis:

Saving Grace by D.M. Barr

Grace Pierrepoint Rendell, the only child of an ailing billionaire, has been treated for paranoia since childhood. When she secretly quits her meds, she begins to suspect that once her father passes, her husband will murder her for her inheritance. Realizing that no one will believe the ravings of a supposed psychotic, she devises a creative way to save herself – she will write herself out of danger, authoring a novel with the heroine in exactly the same circumstances, thus subtly exposing her husband’s scheme to the world. She hires acclaimed author Lynn Andrews to help edit her literary insurance policy, but when Lynn is murdered, Grace is discovered standing over the bloody remains. The clock is ticking: can she write and publish her manuscript before she is strapped into a straitjacket, accused of homicide, or lowered six feet under?

With a cast of secondary characters whose challenges mirror Grace’s own, Saving Grace is, at it’s core, an allegory for the struggle of the marginalized to be heard and live life on their own terms.
