##BookReview “The Murder Club” by Nikki Crutchley

cover

If reading crime fiction and suspense has taught me nothing else, it’s to avoid small towns! 😀 They all have serial killers, and so many odd, quirky residents, it’s nearly impossible to identify the killer.

Welcome to Lentford, New Zealand!

I didn’t read book one in this series, but it’s obvious Miller Hatcher is in Lentford for closure… and redemption. She’s avoided dealing with the home of her late mother for two years, and she’s trying to regroup from too many bad decisions and too much alcohol.

Trying not to see her job at the local newspaper as a step down in her career, it shakes Miller when she realizes letters she’s received could be from the killer of a local woman. Her worst fears are realized when the letters… and the killings continue by the man dubbed the Scarf Killer. He wants Miller to make him famous by writing about him in the paper. But he’s looking for more than notoriety, and Miller finds herself in danger. Again.

We also meet Cassie whose mother disappeared years ago but her remains were only recently found, and Logan, whose sister was murdered, and their paths and lives will intersect with Miller’s before a killer is exposed.

Kudos to Nikki Crutchley! She laced this one up nice and tight, making it impossible for me to guess the killer’s identity!  I read the last three chapters saying, “Whaaaaat?” a lot!

Enjoy!

SYNOPSIS

‘Not all evil, on the surface, is ugly and menacing. It doesn’t always lurk in city centres after dark. It mows your lawns, frequents your local pub, takes its kids to school and contributes to communities.’

When the first letter arrives saying that ‘tonight it begins’, journalist Miller Hatcher ignores it. But then the body of a murdered woman is discovered, strangled, a scarf around her neck.

Cassie Hughes has always vowed to find the man who murdered her mother. Cassie knows he’s out there and wants him to pay, and Miller agrees to bring the cold case back into the public’s eye.

Logan Dodds has been obsessed with true crime ever since his sister was murdered thirty years ago. He has turned his obsession into a career and has created the True Crime Enthusiasts Club and his newest venture, True Crime Tours.

The lives of Miller, Cassie and Logan – all affected differently by murder – become entwined as The Scarf Killer, desperate for infamy, and Miller’s attention, makes his mark on the small town of Lentford.

EXCERPTA Hint of Malice

She caught her blurred reflection in the antiquated steel doors of the basement elevator.

Black turtleneck. Black Jeans. Black boots. Jacket and gloves, also black.

If she were in a nightclub, she would be called hot.

But she wasn’t some voluptuous bad-ass fashionista making a statement or setting a trend. She wore black for one reason. It hid blood splatter.

Olivia lost track of time and had no idea of how long she had sat and cried in the hallway. She had not felt this overwhelmed in years. Again, she thought about finding a therapist to try and work through the darkness in her mind, but once again, she quickly vetoed the idea. She had attempted counseling twice while in college and both times were exercises in futility. In the beginning, with each visit, she felt more positive, more in control. She knew she was moving forward. But sharing the story of her violent beating and physical attack from her mid-teens seemed to undermine her sessions and distract her therapists both times. From that point on they would each focus on the sex and encourage Olivia to be more open and honest about sex. She couldn’t deal with the foolishness. Her problems didn’t not start the day she was beaten and attacked. Her problems began when her father was killed in a car accident–she knew THAT much. After one or two more sessions each time, she withdrew from counseling. The second therapist had made an eerily prophetic comment at their last meeting. “I’m sorry we won’t be continuing, Olivia, but regardless, the root of your anxiety and internal pain will not go away until you force it into the light and confront it.”

“I’m not crazy, mama… I’m not.”

Lennie’s chest tightened. He had not called her that since second grade. Sitting her bag at the back door, Lennie walked over and took the swing next to Duncan. They both rocked in the silence until Lenore spoke.

“Most people who go to counseling aren’t mentally ill, Dunc. Life just has a way of dumping too much on us at once.” She touched his hand. “The drowning feeling you mentioned? You’re overwhelmed. It happens to us all at some point during our lives.”

“Have you ever felt like you were drowning, mom?”

“Not drowning so much as… helpless.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Well, don’t take this as clinical or anything, but I knew the problem and I knew the cause. I just couldn’t fix it.”

“Dad.” It was a statement, not a question.

Lennie’s smile was bittersweet. “Yes.”

Running from a past that hid in the shadows.

Tortured by its presence.

Until one night a stranger took my hand leading me out of danger… I was blinded by his touch.

Marcus hid a painful secret – one that pushed me to reveal my own. It was easy with him, he showed me how to breathe.

He was used to dangerous predators, dealt with them every day.

But he was about to face my biggest regret.

My greatest fear.

The monster from my past.

Drake…

Will either of us make it out alive?
