And this idyllic town has dark and murderous ones. Either, she reveals them or risk them claiming her, too.In Feathered Nest, nothing is what it seems. The girl in cabin 13 is about to find out that the dead may have secrets of their own.

A.J. Rivers loves all things mystery and thriller. Growing up in a sleepy small town, A.J. spent her days enthralled in crime solving novels and movies. She started creating stories at a young age to escape and create adventures for herself. As a child she dreamed of solving crimes and becoming a crime fighter. She dreamed of being as great as her favorite crime solving character Sherlock Holmes. While in college she realized that leading a crime fighting life might be more gruesome than she could stomach. She decided that the best course of action would be to fuse her love of writing with her love of thrilling mysteries together. She finds inspiration from researching true crimes and is passionate about writing suspenseful novels with crazy twists. Twists that you’ll never see coming. The inspiration for her first novel came when she read a news article about a missing young woman in a small town that was never found. Her question on who, what, and why brought her to her journal to discovering the dark twisted story behind the disappearance and to seek justice for the victim through her writing. Her thriller novels have elements of mystery, suspense, and romance. When she’s not absorbed in a novel or working on her next thriller mystery, her favorite past time is spent with her husky. She finds great inspiration while going on hikes with her dog.

In another century, I wanted to go into law enforcement. My mom put her foot down—which was so much worse than Daddy putting his foot down—and said it wasn’t going to happen because 1) a profession where I’d be shot at was out of the question, and 2) my obstinance would make people want to shoot at me! HA!

I recalled that conversation after the opening of The Girl in Cabin 13. Her dogged determination to make a suspect confess—and her righteous indignation—lead Emma Griffin to almost blowing an undercover FBI operation, and I have no doubt her captain would have loved to shoot her! HA! But instead, Emma finds herself chained to desk duty for six months.

An opportunity for redemption sends the young agent to Feathered Nest, Virginia. The sleepy, isolated town has the distinction of being the site of two murders and eight missing persons in the last two years and also has a small police force slow to reach out for assistance. Emma is sent in undercover to gather info and potential leads and report back to her team.

Of course, she has other plans.

With dead bodies on front porches, desiccated graves, and illicit affairs, this read has plenty of action, suspense, and plot twists. It also has a distracted heroine.

Emma’s past is never far from her thoughts. The frequent moves during her childhood, followed by the murder of her ballerina mother and later, the disappearance of first her father then her ex-boyfriend haunt and hinder Emma. Yet, her sad family saga is the reason she joined the FBI, though I’m not sure how she passed the psych tests! HA!

Despite far too many poor decisions, I liked Emma Griffin. She is sharp, strong, and confident. She respects her training even if she doesn’t always follow procedures. Underestimated by her male colleagues, I believe Emma works harder to prove her worthiness to herself than anyone else… not always a good thing.

Unfortunately, her confidence has a touch of arrogance that does not look good on her. Inserting herself into the local investigation causes Emma to focus in on a suspect too early, make her short-sighted, and leave her blind to the truth, and a pitiful, but psychotic serial killer.

The narrator did an excellent job of matching the pace of the story, keeping the suspense heightened, and keeping me in the moment.

Enjoy!

EXCERPT

THE SOFT KNOCK STAYED HER HAND. SHE LOOKED AT THE ALARM clock blinking in her palm as if the sound had somehow come from the object.

Before she could respond, the door swung open. The light from the hall illuminated Ashe. Callie’s mouth ran dry.

His shirt off, jeans unbuttoned and riding low on his hips, he looked like an advertisement for lust. Her eyes roamed over his perfect chest, following the swirling tattoos that curled down deliciously defined abs and continued under the denim waistband.

Her pulse jumped as he came toward her. Only then did she remember she was naked, not that she cared. She dropped the alarm clock, it bounced from the bed to the floor.

She ignored it. She only had eyes for Ashe. She bit her bottom lip as anticipation zinged through her body.

“Can’t sleep,” Ashe stated, his deep husky voice made her heart beat faster.

“No,” she whispered, still poised on her knees in the middle of the bed.

“You?” He stalked further into her room, as graceful as a hunting cat, and ten times more sensual than any human.

This would be amazing.

He stopped at the edge of the mattress and folded his hands behind his back.

“Not so much,” he replied.

“Need help?”

“That’s my line,” he said but didn’t move from his spot.

She laughed softly. “Then come help me.” She crooked her finger at him and watched with appreciation as his chest moved, sending muscles rippling.

“Lay down.” The strain in his voice was so erotic. Excitement building, she did as he bid. “Close your eyes.”

She should have expected him to be demanding. She grinned, loving it. Her sheet landed over her body before his hands deftly moved around her form, tucking her in so the sheet hugged the curves of her body.

His hands lingered, sending goosebumps cascading across her skin. The bed dipped as he leaned over her.

Callie moved her head so she could watch behind slitted eyes as he hovered.

“We have to sleep.”

Sleep was the last thing on her mind.

He brushed his fingertips across her lips, making her shiver. As his index finger lingered against her bottom lip, her mouth fell open, and she captured the digit between her teeth. He hissed in pleasure. Emboldened by the sound, she closed her lips around his finger and swirled her tongue around the tip. She tasted victory as she heard his breath speed.

She nipped him playfully before letting go. He growled, causing her to giggle.

“We really need to sleep.” Ashe’s eyes were glowing, and she could feel the beat of his magic. “You said that already.”

“I know.” Ashe leaned closer, his lips parted.

“Kiss me,” Callie whispered.

“That would be a bad idea.” His eyes seemed to grow brighter

Synopsis

When Lord Duchoveny was presented with an opportunity that was hard to resist, it came with a clause. A woman he desired would also, technically, be his boss.

Gabriella Collingsworth oversaw the UK operations for a private investor and venture capitalist. Between them, they had agreed Alex Duchoveny would be the best man to head a new business with lucrative contracts.

What hadn’t been banked on was the immediate attraction between Alex and Gabriella and the push and pull of forming a relationship between two people with alpha tendencies.

A British stiff upper lip or stick up his ass as Gabriella called it, causes Alex to find it difficult to express his feelings for her.

That is until an old rival returns for revenge.

Excerpt

Visiting a sex club wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was certainly what I needed. Accepting the invitation from a rather vile client of mine presented, unknowingly at the time, a huge and unexpected opportunity. I had just taken a call from Lord Patrick Stanton, a ‘Name’ at Lloyds and one of only a handful of clients I had managed to retain after voicing my concern over fund management and being given the boot before the whole company dissolved. Obviously, because of my title, being a Lord of the Realm myself, and coming from the exact right family, I started my own hedge fund management company without any trouble. I hadn’t liked Stanton when he’d been thrust on to me a few years previous and I disliked him more over that time. He was a cretin of gargantuan proportions, sleazy, and part of a very undesirable ring of ‘all male club’ types that like to abuse women. However, the invitation to the sex club would give me that last amount of evidence I needed to get rid of him as a client without retribution. Reporting him to the police was a futile exercise. The women didn’t come forward, and since some of the police were also part of his little club, it was a done deal that he would be protected. “Alex, did you hear me?” I turned from the floor to ceiling glass windows in my plush corner office. “Sorry, Daisy, I was miles away. What did you say?” I smiled at the elderly lady that saved my bacon every day of the week. She was about the best personal assistant one could wish for. “You have a meeting in a half hour, I wanted to remind you because I’m sure you need to get moving,” she said, returning my smile. “I do, and thank you.” I pushed myself away from the desk and rose. It was time to get my arse into gear and not spend so much effort on Stanton. I wanted to pitch to a new client, one I’d been after for a few years. Mackenzie Miller was a venture capitalist with cash to invest. He was also the most intriguing person I’d had the pleasure to meet. Well, when I say meet, it had been at a dinner, and briefly. He’d had a woman that I could instantly have fallen in love with on his arm. So much was my attraction to her that I had to keep my distance in case I visually salivated and offended them both. I never got her name, but her blonde hair and elegance, coupled with her American southern accent, just blew me away. Maybe I’d ask after her simply so I could know her name.

The Camera Aversion of Scientists

If you want to see a lab empty out like the place is on fire, get a camera. Almost everybody who works in labs is camera shy. This can be a problem if you’re in that large majority and land in a prominent lab where the university (or even local media crews) might be around on a regular basis depending on what’s been discovered. These poor guys, who are just trying to do their jobs, want to film scientists doing science, but the problem is that almost all of the scientists want to run away.

One postdoc I remember even hid in the lab’s “hot room” to avoid a news crew. That’s the term for the room where all the radioactive materials are stored— very safely, really; there’s little to no risk to going in that room despite its off-putting appearance. The university’s radiation safety staff inspects those rooms regularly, and nobody’s allowed in there without knowing what they’re doing.

But the door has those giant radiation warning signs on it, and my colleague correctly guessed that the camera people sure as hell wouldn’t follow him there.

…That guy in the hot room stood around for almost an hour with nothing to do, until he was sure the crew was gone. Having successfully avoided appearing in the video, he went back to work and faced nothing but a bit of ribbing from the rest of us.

About the Author

Mary Austin is the pseudonym for a physician who, in order to publicize a suppressed discovery in cancer research, had to sacrifice first her academic career, then a career as a board-certified pediatrician, and then her personal safety. She would do it again.
