A Booktiful Love is a collection of poems that deal with the entirety of
human experience in its various forms. Didactically rich, the poems explore
ideas ranging from love, relationships, and patriotism to marriage,
morality, and many other concepts pertinent to daily living.

Given its variety of themes, what unifies the poems in this collection is
the simplicity and ambiguousness of language which the poet employs. The
poems draw their strength from their clarity and meaning.

These are poems with a purpose. Poet Tolu’ A. Akinyemi didn’t shy away from
this fact, as he wrote in the poems “Writers” and “Write for
Rights.” The poet’s philosophy is evident in this collection. To him, a
writer is saddled with the responsibility to use his words to teach, preach,
and fight for freedom.

He writes:

“Let’s change the world, one writer at a time,

Write those words till the world gets it right.”

Another special attribute to this collection is the poet’s experimentation
with words. This is clear right from the title. The poet identifies himself
as a creator of words. The reader is obliged to travel into the mind of the
writer in each poem, to understand how his mind works. As readers approach
the end of this collection, they not only become engrossed in its didactic
richness, but also will appreciate the uniqueness of the poet’s style and
the sense of responsibility he carries.

EXCERPT

Her tears had stopped. She should release him. But a new storm threatened. She hadn’t been with a man since Brett, hadn’t trusted her choices in companions.

Brett’s defection, and subsequent courtroom nastiness, had cautioned her into remaining celibate. He’d been so far from what she’d imagined, she’d decided to swear off men. That had been easy until Cameron appeared on her horizon.

His hot body in a uniform plus overall good looks had snared her attention at the court martial, as well as Elena’s. They’d salivated over him at the time, and then moved on. They’d returned to work, and she’d begun to pick up the pieces after Brett. She didn’t need a man to be fulfilled. Or so she thought. By the way she was reacting to Cam now, she realized her attraction from back then had only lain dormant. His kindness, gentleness, and quiet strength had awakened her desires. God, she felt protected in his embrace. Protected and aroused.

The arousal part scared her. Here she was, finding another soldier wildly attractive. If she was smart, she’d push him away, thank him for his kindness, and call it a night. He wouldn’t insist. He’d already proven he was a gentleman. He was nothing like Brett.

Since she’d met him a few days ago, he’d been only professional and understanding, quietly strong and reliable through the home invasion, the fire, and now their flight into the wilderness. He’d never come on to her, had simply offered opinions while listening to her explanations. She had no idea whether he looked at her that way or not. He’d make a significant poker player, with no hint of what he was thinking visible to another person. Perhaps that was why she was getting more turned on as the seconds ticked by. She’d love to see him lose control.

Brett never had. He’d always been in full control in the bedroom, as well as in the war room. His orgasms had been quiet, disciplined releases, and she’d stifled her screams to match his restraint. She had no idea whether Cam would be the same. Maybe she was destined to only be attracted to cold fish.

She pressed closer to him and felt his arousal between them. So, not a cold fish. She raised her head and opened her eyes. His dark brown ones stared back at her, a glint of confused desire in their depths.

“What the hell are you doing, Audrey?” His voice was hoarse, questioning. He stepped back, arms dropping to his sides. And ran a hand over his face. She took a step forward. Their chests touched. His gaze never left hers. “What are you doing?”

Her heart skipped a beat. It had been a long, long time since she’d acted on a sexual attraction. Part of her wanted to turn tail and run to her room. It wasn’t too late. She could still keep face. A larger part of her wanted to remove Brett’s final hold on her. She didn’t want her last lover to be a traitor. She met his look head on.

About the Author

Cathy Skendrovich has always loved a good story, and spent her formative
years scribbling what is now called Fan Fiction. The current heartthrob of
the time featured heavily in all her stories. Unfortunately, once she went
to college, her writing took the form of term papers, written on typewriters
instead of computer keyboards.

Upon graduation, Cathy took a job as an English teacher in a middle school.
Along the way, she married her husband of thirty-six years, and had two
sons. Now an empty nester, she and her husband have embarked on their own
adventure, moving to Idaho to live overlooking a pond.

Romantic suspense has always been her favorite genre to read and write,
though she has dabbled in historical romance. Creating an unpredictable
storyline is her goal, and she hopes she has done so in her current and
previous books. Prisoner of Love is her first published novel, followed
closely by The Pirate’s Bride, The Pirate Bride’s Holiday Masquerade,
and Undercover with the Nanny. Zone of Action is her fifth book, and her
first military suspense. For research, she asks her son in Army Intelligence
for up to the minute information. Lately, he’s stopped taking her
calls.

Song Lyric Sunday | “The End of the Innocence” – Don Henley

SLS Banner

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time and author Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me is our current guest host. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

This week’s theme is  Different/Same.

~~~~~~~~~~
 The lead single and title track from Don Henley’s third solo studio album of the same name, The End of the Innocence was released in 1989. Henley co-wrote and co-produced the song with Bruce Hornsby, who also performed piano; both artists perform the song live in their respective concerts. Henley’s version peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his fifth solo top ten hit on the chart. The End of the Innocence also became his fourth number-one single on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and peaked at number two on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart.
Henley waxes poetic near the end of the song when he sings no matter how far we go or how fast we get there, we all have somewhere back there in the dust that same small town in each of us.
The official black and white music video for the song was directed by future film director David Fincher (Alien 3, Seven, Fight Club, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and earned Henley an MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video in 1990.
FUN FACTS:
  • In the song lyrics, “this tired old man that we elected king” is a reference to US president Ronald Reagan. There are a lot of political overtones in the song, as Henley strongly opposed Reagan’s agenda. “Armchair warriors often fail” is a reference to former U.S. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North during the Iran-Contra Affair.
  • Co-writer Bruce Hornsby had a US #1 hit with The Way It Is in 1986.
  • When the Eagles broke up in 1980, Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey also launched solo careers. They all did fairly well, but Henley was the most successful. The Eagles re-formed in 1994 for their Hell Freezes Over tour.
Don Henley turned 73-years-old last week and currently lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife, Sharon, and their three children.
Everyone knows how the Eagles felt about YouTube, especially Henley, and their videos are far and few between, but I did find a live Henley performance of The End of the Innocence.
Enjoy!
#Featured “Her Instruments Box Set, Books 1-4” by M.C.A. Hogarth
cover
~~~

“The thrills are nonstop, the alien cultures and races are well developed and fascinating, and there’s just the right amount of humor to keep the whole thing fizzing.” — Analog Science Fiction and Fact

Merchant Trader Reese Eddings just wants to be left alone to run her (failing) operation in peace… so naturally she spends four books wrapped up in spies, pirates, and a space elf civil war! The “Her Instruments” box set contains all four novels:

Earthrise
Reese Eddings has enough to do keeping her rattletrap merchant vessel, the TMS Earthrise, profitable enough to feed herself and her crew. So when a mysterious benefactor from her past shows up demanding she rescue a man from slavers, her first reaction is to run for the hills. Unfortunately, she did promise to repay the loan. But she didn’t think it would involve tangling with pirates over a space elf prince…

Rose Point
Reese is only just getting used to running the Earthrise in the black—and with an Eldritch in her crew—when Hirianthial starts showing powers that even the Eldritch have only in legend. He badly needs training, support and advice, and the only place he can find them is… at home. To see the world of the Eldritch is a once in a lifetime opportunity. And to finally meet the Eldritch Queen! You’d have to twist her arm to get her to admit it, but Reese can’t wait to go. But a court out of fantasy and a breathtaking land aren’t enough compensation when they come packaged with a rabidly xenophobic species whose world is falling apart….

Laisrathera
The Queen of the Eldritch has offered Reese Eddings a life out of a fairy tale. Now the only thing between Reese and a castle of her very own is a maniacal alien despot, his native quisling and all the Eldritch dead-set on preventing the incursion of aliens at any cost, including the ousting of their current usurper, who happens to be an alien himself. The stakes have never been higher, and this last time will count for all…

A Rose Point Holiday
With the Eldritch civil war over, a castle to renovate, and a wedding to prepare for, the last thing Reese is thinking about is taking a break. But the new year is coming and the Eldritch take their holidays very seriously, so Reese decides it can’t hurt to observe the local proprieties. Who knows? Maybe it’ll make good practice for what Felith is calling the wedding of the century. Of course, that was before Reese realized it was going to involve gifts. And decorating. And a town full of recalcitrant Eldritch tenants who have no reason to trust her…
