This is not the song I had queued for this week’s prompt, but after hearing it on a friend’s blog a few days ago, I knew I had to post it. Thanks, Kim!
The haunting lyrics of Devin Marie’s I Can’t Breathe speak to a pain that isn’t new.
It isn’t rare.
It isn’t self-inflicted.
It isn’t justified.
It isn’t DESERVED.
It didn’t start with George Floyd,
but it needs to end now.
If we could stop the pain on our own, we would have centuries ago.
But we cannot do it alone.
It will take all of us,
because despite agendas being promoted,
the issue isn’t black vs. white,
it’s about doing what is right.

I Can’t Breathe
I’m tired of living in the skin I’m in
I didn’t know danger was synonymous with melanin
I go for jogs but never ask my brother to come
cause God forbid anybody sees a black man run
I’m getting tired of pleading the case of men who can’t speak out with a gun in their face
or of boys who shop at convenience stores
whose only crime was having skin different than yours
What will it take to make you see
the only difference between you and me
is people listen when you speak
so listen carefully
I can’t breathe
I can’t breathe
It’s hard living in a world where it’s fine
to call the cops on him for no reason or rhyme
or because he didn’t have a permit to sell his water
all our sons and daughters are dying before they get to chance to reach for their dreams
but when we reach for skittles or our wallet somebody screams
and even when we try to explain what we’re doing
people start shooting
What will it take for you to realize
we know not all cops are bad guys
but to the ones to look us in the eyes
and keep holding on as we cry
I can’t breathe (I can’t breathe)
I can’t breathe (move your knee)
I can’t breathe (unhand me)
I can’t breathe
please stop killing me.
Welp. That’s pretty clear. Thanks for sharing. I’d never heard of this song.

A heartfelt plea. May it reach the ears that need to hear it.

This is the most important share of the day. Thank you for doing that. Sadly this is not new but enough is enough. Silence = acceptance. No more time for that any longer.

Thanks for sharing this Felicia. Her voice is gorgeous, but the lyrics are what really grabs you.

Is this a new song? It contains very poignant lyrics, and it is haunting.

It certainly did not start with George Floyd, but his death has brought back to the forefront for change more than anyone since MLK and we are seeing some change in Jacksonville. A confederate monument was taken down in Hemming Park downtown in light of the protests and Duval County schools have already voted to change the name of at least 2 schools. A long way to go, but there has been more change in the last 30 days then in the past 4 years. Love your song choice this week! 🙂
