Yoga has finally come off her high horse to reveal doubters, sufferers, and cynics. This is the story of one woman’s comic misadventures at the ashram from hell.
Wendy Tate finds herself at a yoga ashram for teacher training, which sounds like a nice, new adventure to her. She’ll have to put on a nicotine patch and give up her daily 5 pm martini. Pish Posh. What could happen? Little does she know, there are characters in and out of the ashram that turn her goals inside out, but she gets to keep her healthy skepticism.
Kelly Jackson is a SAG/AFTRA-affiliated actor and comedienne, and as such, she loves idealizing characters in the books that she narrates. Kelly and her sister are also bloggers known as The Midlife Gals Gone Gray. That’s how this whole thing got started. They choose a topic and then annihilate it through two hilariously disparate points of view. Kelly wrote a book, A Texan Goes to Nirvana, and wanted to narrate it herself. That’s how that got started. When not writing and narrating, Kelly has a ‘death grip on the control panel’ as a Senior Executive Assistant/Girl Friday to CEOs. Although a Texan by birth, Kelly and her sister live in Hawaii and enjoy a regular yoga practice, movies, swimming and oddbody watching at nearby beaches. Aloha! Proud member of SAG/AFTRA

5/5 Stars!
Wendy Tate is a hot mess, a ball of contradictions, and too smart for her own good… and the perfect flawed protagonist.
Not even thirty years old, Wendy is going through her third divorce. She’s a woman of means, but not much substance. The only thing she truly loves is yoga—and not the spiritual aspects, just the art of the movements. Refusing to run, yet again, back to the pseudo-solace of her dysfunctional, judgmental family of Texans, Wendy signs up for intense training to become a yoga instructor so she can open her own studio.
After shelling out an obscene amount of cash for the yoga instructor course, the real fun begins when upscale Wendy arrives to the Kentucky ashram. Her visions of beautiful views and quiet spaces implode at the sight of the dilapidated compound that makes Motel 6 look like an upgrade.
But despite the trailer park-like accommodations, the colorless, tasteless, plant-based menus, a bizarre mix of classmates, gestapo-like instructors, and the real possibility she’s being stalked by a foul ashram employee, Wendy stays. Nothing and no one are going to stop her from completing the course and standing on her own two feet.
Overwhelmed by her surroundings and the shambles her life has become, Wendy visits a local church just to find some normalcy and ends up falling down the rabbit hole. After a “visit” from her long-dead father, Wendy emerges on the other side, and becomes an FBI operative.
Who knew Nirvana could be so much fun? With a little belief suspension, four and a half hours flew by as this chaotic tale kept me giggling and laughing. The cast of crazy characters are unique and well developed as their creator brings them to life. For me, that’s what pulled me into the story. No one knows their story characters better than the author and Kelly Jackson nails every one.
Readers and audiophiles who enjoy humor, sarcasm, satire and women’s humorous adventure will get a kick out of A Texan Goes to Nirvana. And, pay attention to foreshadowing early in the story so you’ll know the ending is perfect!
Enjoy!
