Dare You: Part One Billie and Sawyer (Unchained Attraction Duets Series)

Synopsis

What would you do if a stranger deliberately kissed you?

What if that stranger was younger, hotter than hell and your husband had already traded you in for a much younger model?

Now what if his smoking hot kiss served as the ultimate payback for you being wronged… would you welcome it then?

Seeking sanctuary from a rainstorm inside a wine bar alone Billie Collier’s haven quickly became her hell when of all the places in New York City her soon-to-be ex-husband was also already in there, with his tall pretty homewrecker.

When another rain-soaked refugee swept inside dressed in a high dollar suit he does so with fear in his eyes. Drenched, Sawyer Wild breathed raggedly as he shrugged himself out of his jacket and quickly planted himself in the last empty chair in the wine bar—the one directly across from Billie.

Forced together by circumstance she seeks solace in Sawyer’s flirty banter which strokes her neglected ego, and as time passes and wine loosens her tongue she confesses Logan’s presence and her current humiliation.

Although relative strangers, he quickly relates to Billie’s desperate need to save face and with her curious husband approaching can Billie find her courage to trust and dare Sawyer when he offers her a chance to get even.

DARE You K.L. Shandwick ©2019 Excerpt:

From the corner of my eye I saw Logan and cringed. The jolt of shock I felt had been of quite a different kind to the ones that Sawyer had stirred within me. Looking over Sawyer’s shoulder I watched as Logan spoke to the redhead I instinctively knew was my homewrecker.

As if it were gearing up for attack, my body immediately locked up as I braced myself and felt pressure on my mouth as my lips automatically pinched tightly together. Blood roared in my ears as my heart rate spiked when he turned and headed directly toward us.

Without turning around, Sawyer leaned over and slipped his hand into mine. I stared down at it, still in shock and he gave it a small squeeze. “I take it the man of the moment is behind us?” he muttered intuitively in a barely-there voice.

Turning my focus on Sawyer, I remained practically frozen and nodded slightly, too choked up from a sudden collective of warring emotions rising within from my chest to my throat.

Previously, I’d only seen a picture of Poppy. It had been tucked into Colby’s beach bag after a trip to Nantucket with them, shortly after his eighth birthday.

This woman’s face wasn’t all that, but she was ten years younger and had a body I could only dream of. My petite, boyish frame was nothing like the taller, curvy, buxom redhead I’d seen clinging possessively onto my cheating husband’s arm a moment before.

Staring confused by my thoughts into Sawyer’s eyes my feelings had fleetingly stretched from absurd to sublime. What the hell am I doing?

The girl Logan had chosen over me was everything I wasn’t. In fact, she was more suited to the young, gorgeous man staring intently back at me than she was to Logan.

“Trust me?” Sawyer questioned in a whisper, his serious hazel eyed gaze intense. I had little trust in any man, but without waiting for my answer he leaned further across the table and intimately swept my long damp hair behind my ear.

A small thrill shot down my back in stark contrast to the nerves crippling me as Logan moved closer. Sawyer undaunted by his approach swept the rest of my hair behind my shoulder with the back of his hand, exposing my neck.

Another quick burst of adrenaline unexpectedly erupted within me and instantly ignited feelings of desire I hadn’t realized I had missed until that very moment.

Fighting to ignore how my body was reacting, I convinced myself Sawyer was a brilliant actor. He genuinely looked as if he had wanted me and the tender unhurried way he had touched me had made me feel desired.

My heart had felt as if it were about to explode in reaction because, acting or not, it had been a very long time since any man had looked at me the way Sawyer did. When I wanted to lean into his hand for a more tangible connection I’d felt ridiculous, considering the circumstances, but I had still wanted to do it all the same.

With a soft smile like he got a kick out of making a show of us, his gaze rolled leisurely up my neck, traced across from my ear to my lips and his tongue immediately licked his own. I felt his weighted gaze crush in my chest until I could barely breathe and it dawned on me Sawyer’s brazen intent was to actually kiss me.

#Spotlight Nancy Joie Wilkie, author of “Seven Sides of Self”

Nancy worked for over 30 years in both the biotechnology industry and as a part of the Nancy Joie Wilkiefederal government’s biodefense effort. She served as a project manager, providing oversight for the development of many new products. Now retired, she composes original music, plays a variety of instruments, and records many of her compositions. “Seven Sides of Self” is her first fiction publication. She is currently working on more short stories, a novella, and a science fiction novel. Nancy resides in Brookeville, Maryland. More about Nancy and her work can be found at www.mindsights.net.

The stories in Seven Sides of Self are so thoughtful and engaging, and at times very personal. What was your creative process?

Actually, the stories really are quite personal.  If you know me well, the collection can be thought of a scavenger hunt. There are little pieces of me in each of the seven stories — hence the title. As for my creative process, there is no one magic formula. As an example, An Intricate Balance came to me while out on a long walk. I got home and started writing — several hours later, I had the first draft of the story. You just never know when the Muses will show up!

As a former scientist, musician, artist, and now published author, your resume is really impressive. What drew you first to science and then to music and art, and do you see connections between these?

My maternal grandfather was an organic chemist. As a youngster, I would watch him work in his laboratory and always thought, “That’s what I want to do when I grow up,” and so I did!  I’m lucky to have known what I wanted to do; not everyone knows their calling. As for the music and the art, I had two musically gifted grandparents and a bunch of mostly older cousins who were musicians, artists, and writers. They were my inspiration. As for a connection, all of these fields are about creating something — taking what one sees or hears in one’s mind or feels in one’s heart and then bringing the thoughts and feelings out into the real world — hence my moniker: mindsights.

You’ve mentioned what you call “spiritual dynamics,” referring to the connection between souls and physical bodies. Why are you interested in souls, and can a reader find that interest in the book?

Being a distant relative of William Thomson — better known as Lord Kelvin, a major contributor to the Third Law of Thermodynamics — and having been a scientist myself, I have always been interested in the Three Laws of Thermodynamics. After I lost my father to cancer 13 years ago, I started to rethink how I viewed the soul and the afterlife — trying to make some sense of my father’s passing — and then started thinking about our “before life.” It was then that I thought developing the Three Laws of Spiritual Dynamics would be an interesting analog and might be used in some of my stories. An Intricate Balance is really my first venture into that arena. I do plan to more fully explore these ideas in future stories.

About Seven Sides of Self

As a musician, artist, writer, and former scientist, Nancy Joie Wilkie’s first collection of short stories is designed to stimulate the intellect and engage the imagination. Seven Sides of Self (She Writes Press) explores seven aspects of an individual — the storyteller, the skeptic, the survivor, the saint (or the sinner), the scholar, the seeker, and the savior.

Through the lives of the central characters, Nancy examines themes of battling strong emotions, the lengths we might go to for self-preservation and self-sacrifice, the inability to accept things as different, and taking responsibility for what we create.  Each story seeks to contribute something to our ability to better understand ourselves, the world around us, and the conflicts we all face. Original and thought-provoking, these stories will delight any fan of science-fiction and fantasy.

Have you ever loved something so much you’d do anything to protect it?

Keep it safe, no matter the expense to yourself? No matter how miserable it makes you? Yeah, we all have. Some folks feel the need to protect their loved ones—I feel the need to protect my six-pack.

And my washboard has been well protected beneath sixty pounds of hardened man chub, but my sexy abs are about to make a comeback.

I do it alright, even sign up for a trainer at the gym.

This dude is just what I need to get back on track. He’ll give me the brutal drill sergeant attitude I need to kick my ass in line. It’s gonna be freakin’ awesome.

Imagine my shock and shrinking manhood when Jordan Williams walks in. A five-feet-six inch chick with more curves than a back road and just the right amount of sass and sweet. She’s bold as brass and tough as nails, and I’m completely screwed.

She encourages me to set three milestones for my weight loss, a way to reward myself for the pounds shed. One is getting back on the dating scene. It’s not what I expect, but I have a hard time saying no to her. I’m not only losing my dad bod but my man card too.

All it takes is three disastrous dates and several awkward situations for me to realize who I really want to show all my tools to is right in front of me. Busting my ass in the gym every day.

Maybe I should have concentrated just as much on protecting my heart as I have my abs.

Jordan is out of my league, and my goal is to get on her level.
