Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time and author Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me is our current guest host. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

This week’s theme is  Dream/Lullaby/Sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~
It’s hard to believe but Selena Quintanilla-Perez would be 48 years old had she not been murdered in 1995.
The young Tejano music singer was shot and killed by the ex-president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar over an argument about Saldivar’s embezzlement on March 31, 1995. She never got to see Dreaming of You climb the pop charts all the way to number twenty-two. The song was recorded just two weeks before her death.
The lyrics explore feelings of longing and hope that the singer’s love interest is thinking about her while she is dreaming of him at night.
FUN FACTS:
  • Dreaming of You was originally written in 1989 for American R&B group The Jets, who turned down the recording.
  •  The Los Angeles Times recognized Dreaming of You as one of the top 10 singles of 1995.
  • As of 2010, the single has sold 254,000 digital downloads, and as of April 2015, has been streamed 788,000 times, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
  • During the recording session for Dreaming of You, Selena was battling bronchitis. Her father asked her to “just try” and sing the song because several producers had arrived from Los Angeles to watch her record the track.
  • Dreaming of You sold 175,000 copies on its first day of release in the U.S.—a then-record for a female vocalist. With first week sales of 331,000 units, it became the second-highest first-week sales for a female musician since Nielsen Soundscan began monitoring album sales in 1991.
Enjoy!
  1. I admit I didn’t know who Selena was until I saw the movie, but man I bawled like a baby. Then, I bought her music and made everyone around me listen to it on an endless loop, lol. Of course, this song and I Could Fall In Love With You are my favorites, but I also really, really love Como La Flor. I don’t understand the words, but I love the beat! I haven’t dared to watch the movie again, but I think I need to (even though I know I’m going to cry again!) ❤
