Jasmine saw the vehicle slow as it drove through the gates and her heart raced a little faster. She was a woman alone on a ranch, and she had been dumb enough to leave her phone upstairs; she couldn’t even phone for help.
Making a split-second decision she grabbed a broom from the broom closet and headed to the front door. With her hand on the handle the thunder roared again, the cloudburst sending a waterfall of rain streaming towards the Double T. If she had any hope of identifying the driver that was gone now. She stepped out onto the porch, the broom braced over her shoulder as if she was taking aim.
It was a brave move, a foolish one, but it was the only one she had. She felt the cool drops slap against her legs as the rain sneaked in below the porch’s overhang, while she aimed the broom at the truck. Her breath caught in her throat when she noticed the truck was pulling a trailer.
Was it a trailer of bandits?
Grow up, Jasmine! She scolded herself, narrowing her eyes to see through the windscreen. Why would anyone come to the Double T to make trouble?
She glanced towards the bunkhouse in the distance, where the hands were. She heard the faint sound of country music blasting from the radio they always had going. Even if she wanted to shout for help there was no way they would hear her over the thunder and the deafening rain.
Jasmine noticed movement in the truck and made a show of aiming the broom at the driver, when the spotlights suddenly went on.
Her breath got caught in her throat as fear rushed through her veins. This is it, she thought as her heart thrashed against her ribs. She was really going out with nothing but a broom to protect her.
Jack couldn’t stop the smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth. Did she have any idea how cute she looked? Standing in the porch with nothing but her slip, now see-through from the rain, with a broom over her shoulder.
He had to hand it to her, she had courage. He couldn’t stop himself from teasing her just a little more, and hit the spots. Her eyes widened like a deer in the headlights but the broom held steady over her shoulder.
He didn’t expect the rush of need that shot through his system; neither did he expect her to lift her chin defiantly even though she was clearly frightened. He opened the door of his truck, the reason for his being there completely forgotten.
He held up his hands and called to her through the rain. “I come in peace.”
Her eyes narrowed, but the broom held steady. “State your name!” Jasmine called back to him, her back ramrod straight.
He couldn’t, he simply couldn’t hold it another minute. Laughter tumbled from him as he approached the porch. Jack shook his head when he saw her take a step back.
“Stop right there Buster, or I’ll shoot,” Jasmine warned.
“Should I wait here while you fetch the shotgun and put the broom away, or are you going to sweep me off the porch first?”
