Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time and author Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me is our current guest host. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.
This week’s theme is “Songs from/connected to television shows.”
~~~~~~~~~~
My selections this week aren’t from television shows, but they are connected to one.
Originally a Movie of the Week entry, Starsky and Hutch aired from 1975-1979. The cop-drama paired the streetwise New Yorker, David Starsky (played by Paul Michael Glaser) with the more wholesome, Minnesota transplant, Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson (played by David Soul), as LAPD detectives fighting crime with never a hair out of place!
Riding high on the success of playing in the hit TV show, Soul returned to one of his early career choices as a singer. His debut, Don’t Give Up on Us was a worldwide smash, spending four weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in January and February 1977, and a single week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1977. In addition, the song spent one week at No. 1 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart.
FUN FACTS:
- Don’t Give Up on Us was rated No. 93 in VH1’s 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders because, despite having more hits in the UK, Soul was never again able to reach the top forty in the US.
- In September 2004, Soul became a British citizen, while retaining his U.S. citizenship.
- The crime-fighting duo’s vehicle of choice was Starsky’s two-door Ford Gran Torino, which was bright red, with a large white vector stripe on both sides. Approximately four different cars were used for filming.
- .Forty years after its television run Starsky and Hutch continues to enjoy world-wide success as a syndication favorite.
- Soul hasn’t recorded since the 90s, but frequently acts on the British stage.
Enjoy!
Don’t Give Up On Us
Don’t make the wrong seem right
The future isn’t just one night
It’s written in the moonlight
Painted on the stars
We can’t change ours
We’re still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don’t give up on us, I know
We can still come through
You’ve got a right to start believin’
There’s still a little love left, even so
Lord knows we’ve come this far
Can’t we stay the way we are?
The angel and the dreamer
Who sometimes plays a fool
Don’t give up on us, I know
We can still come through
and painted on the stars
We can’t change ours
We’re still worth one more try
I know we put a last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don’t give up on us, I know
We can still come through
Don’t give up on us, baby
