Song Lyric Sunday | “Home” – Stephanie Mills

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time and author Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me is our current guest host. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

This week’s theme is  “Songs from movies.

Technically, my SLS choice originated in a Broadway musical.

Home was sung by then relatively unknown artist, Stephanie Mills, in The Wiz, William F. Brown’s retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with an all-black cast in 1975.

However, the stage play was made into a big budget movie three years later and Diana Ross sang (and killed) Mills’ signature song.

While Home is a favorite of mine, it’s special to me because it was my baby brother’s favorite song. I mean he REALLY loved the song… so much so, that when he passed away from AIDS-related complications in 1993, the song was played during his memorial service, and a line from the song, “When I think of home,” was placed on his headstone, per his wishes.

Keith's Headstone

Mills performs the song in the official video after releasing Home on her 1989 album of the same name.

  • Mills’ 1989 release of Home went all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart.
  • Whitney Houston made her world debut on The Merv Griffin Show on April 29, 1983 performing Home.
  • The 1975 Broadway production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical
  • .Motown Productions acquired the film rights to The Wiz in 1977, and signed Stephanie Mills in anticipation of having her star as Dorothy in the film adaptation. Motown singer and actress Diana Ross asked Motown CEO Berry Gordy to cast her instead, but he declined, feeling that the then-33-year-old Ross was far too old for the part. However, she contacted Rob Cohen of Universal Pictures, who offered to have them finance the film if she were to play Dorothy, at which point he acquiesced.
  • The film was a critical and commercial failure, performing poorly at the box office and severely panned by critics, who branded the casting of Ross instead of Mills as Dorothy a disastrous blunder.

  1. First of all Stephanie Mills used to be my fav artist! And Home is definitely at the top of the list. Also, I’m sending condolences about your little brother ❤ Although it happened long ago, I know that living with the death of a loved one never gets easier.

  2. Oh, I love this song (and “The Wiz”. I am so glad you included the Stephanie Mills version. It is the first one I heard (which is good, because as you said, Dianna Ross killed it!) Thanks for the share.

  3. A very poignant sharing about your brother, Wendell, Nesie. It is a beautiful song. Thanks also for the background info on it and how Stephanie got cheated out of her role in the movie. Show biz can be a cutthroat biz for sure 😦

  4. Stephanie Mills has such a great stage presence, she looks so comfortable strutting her stuff. I never saw The Whiz, but I would like to check it out some day. What could be better than “A world full of love”?
