80s music is known for many things including boy bands, hair bands, and female artist topping the charts. Females like Whitney Houston, cited by Guinness World Records as the most awarded female recording artist of all time, and who, seven years after her death, remains one of the bestselling artists of all time selling more than 200 million records worldwide.
Her self-titled album in 1985 put her square in the public eye with three number one songs, including How Will I Know. The song topped the charts for two weeks. The accompanying music video, filmed before the song’s release, was her first to receive heavy rotation on MTV. The music video was nominated for two awards at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards, in the categories of Best New Artist and Best Female Video, winning the latter.
Fun Facts:
- George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam wrote How Will I Know expressly for Janet Jackson who was in the middle of making her Control album and turned it down.
- The backing vocals are by Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston.
- George and Shannon also wrote Houston’s hit I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).
- The video was directed by Brian Grant, who also did Olivia Newton-John’s Physical and Donna Summer’s She Works Hard For The Money.
- The video’s choreographer was Arlene Phillips, who was later a judge on the British show Strictly Come Dancing.
- George and Shannon record as Boy Meets Girl and had a hit in 1988 with Waiting For A Star To Fall.
Enjoy!

How Will I Know
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above, mmm-hmm
Oh, I lose control, can’t seem to get enough, uh-huh
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love
How will I know
How will I know (love can be deceiving)
How will I know
I say a prayer with every heartbeat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I’m asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he’s thinking of me
I try to phone but I’m too shy (can’t speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?
Said there’s no mistaking, what I feel is really love
How will I know
How will I know (love can be deceiving)
How will I know
I say a prayer with every heartbeat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I’m asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he’s thinking of me
I try to phone but I’m too shy (can’t speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?
If he loves me not
If he loves me
Ooh, if he loves me not
Hey, if he loves me
If he loves me not
How will I know
Hey, how will I know
I say a prayer with every heartbeat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I’m asking you ’cause you know about these things
How will I know if he’s thinking of me
I try to phone but I’m too shy (can’t speak)
Falling in love is so bittersweet
This love is strong, why do I feel weak?
How will I know
How will I know (I say a prayer)
How will I know
Ooh, how will I know (I fall in love)
How will I love, hey, how will I know?
Oh I remember this song! Super! Had never seen this video, but it’s so fun! 🙂

Okay, you got me! This is one of my all-time favourite Whitney Houston songs. I heard they just released a new song (a cover of Higher Love), but I will stick with songs like this!
