#Review “The Forgotten Children” by Isabella Muir

4/5 Stars!

Forgotten Children deals with the loss of children on several levels through varying circumstances.

Little more than a child herself, Emily Carpenter gives birth at sixteen and is forced to give her son up for adoption.

Consumed with grief and feeling betrayed by her parents, Emily runs away and begins a new life on her own, and consequentially, the Carpenters lose their daughter.

Though she moves on, Emily never forgot about her child. I would go as far to say that even though she becomes a successful author of children’s books, Emily suffers from recurring depression for nearly twenty years.

Another devastating loss sets Emily on the path to search for the son she was forced to give up.

Best friend Geraldine (Gee) has been friend, family and support network to Emily for twenty years and continues to have her back…and tell her things Emily may not want to hear. Gee’s past is no less painful and tragic as Emily’s, but that doesn’t stop her from always helping Emily to make peace with the past and move forward… something Gee, herself will never do.

During her search to find peace and her son Emily meets Walter and Patrick, two very different young men battling demons from the past of their own and she could be the link to their unanswered question, and a young widow and her son provide a much-needed emotional grounding for the distracted author.

But Emily’s biggest obstacle is her mother, Florence Carpenter. After two awkward visits, Emily knows her mother has the information she needs to find her son. But anger and bitter hatred of her mother and her religious fanaticism have festered inside Emily for two decades and I didn’t see her reconciling with her mother anytime in this life. However, when Florence explains why she insisted Emily give her son up, Emily realizes she’s been wrong about a lot of things. Nice plot twist.

Her hope for finding the child she named Thomas is snatched away when Emily learns he could be anywhere on the planet because of an unspoken practice Britain used to empty its orphanages. She accepts that Thomas is lost to her but channels her heartbreak into helping others find lost family… which goes full circle and opens up possibilities for Emily’s search to continue.

Loss, forgiveness, and acceptance are well-handled themes throughout the story. Some people are forgiven and accepted, others not so much. But Mark, Emily’s boyfriend deserved better than what he got. I felt Emily was selfish and cold to simply walk away. Another loss compounded Emily’s already fragile mind and would eventually propel her forward, but Mark lost something too and Emily pushed his feelings aside all too easily and that half-assed letter she later wrote was too little, too late. And did she even mail it?

Engrossing and emotional read. It was hard enough reading how the loss of a child affected each character, but learning of a country’s horrid, heartless disposal of children entrusted into its care for economic reasons, and the abuse and suffering those children endured was heartbreaking. It’s not an easy read, but it is a compelling one and I do recommend it.

Enjoy!

A woman’s search to find her son uncovers the shocking truth about one of Britain’s darkest periods

Struggling with the demons of her past, Emily is a children’s author with a dark secret, and a guilt that threatens to consume her.  For twenty years she has lived in Brighton, England, trying to forget the day they took her baby from her, just hours after he was born.  But now, in the summer of 1987, she decides to begin the search for her son.

Emily takes refuge in a small town on the Isle of Anglesey to plan the search, where she meets Walter, a gentle stranger, who helps her with his words of wisdom and kindness.  But it is when she decides to return home to Hastings, that she really has to face her demons.

Estranged from her parents when she was just sixteen, Emily is shocked by what her mother has to tell her about events that occurred before Emily was even born.

Beside her, throughout her search, is Emily’s beautiful Irish friend, Geraldine, recovering from her own sad experiences.  Together they uncover a truth that shocks them all.

 ~~~
The Forgotten Children draws the reader into lives affected by narrow-minded beliefs and blinkered thinking at the highest level. Children who weren’t allowed to be born, children who were abandoned, and children who were taken, forced to lead a life thousands of miles away from everyone and everything they knew – leaving scars that may never heal.
At its heart, The Forgotten Children is a story of survival, but the journey that Emily has to take is painful.  Even more so because she knows it was allowed to happen by individuals, religions and governments, who should have known better.
Dorian Anson is my friend. She’s the only person who’s ever questioned my smiles. My jokes. The one liners that have our friends shaking their heads at me.
I’ve lived my life on those smiles. They never failed me, until her.
I wasn’t counting on her when I designed my front. I never imagined the possibility of someone like her coming into my life.
The wild hair, the kind smile and those eyes that see everything.
She was the girl with the beautiful soul, pretty face and whole heart. But hearts aren’t made to stay whole.
I watched hers break. I watched her tears fall. I watched as her world tilted on its axis and shattered at her feet.
This girl.
She sees me, all parts of me—the truths I try to hide, the secrets I bury. What’s mine and what’s not.
She sees it all, and I can only hope the truth isn’t too much. That she won’t walk away.
That she won’t leave me…alone.
We both have a past. We have ghosts. We have fears.
I’m hoping that somehow in the end, we’ll have each other too.
I’ve never needed anyone before her, and I know I’ll never want anyone else after her.
There is no one like her.
My pretty girl.
Dorian.
#AuthorSpotlight Julia Ibbotson, author of “The Drumbeats Trilogy”
banner
~~~

Julia IbbotsonAward-winning author Julia Ibbotson is fascinated by the medieval world and concepts of time travel. She read English at Keele University, England (after a turbulent but exciting gap year in Ghana, West Africa) specialising in medieval language, literature and history, and has a PhD in socio-linguistics. She wrote her first novel at 10 years of age, but became a school teacher, then a university lecturer and researcher. Finding Jess (2018) is her sixth book and the last of the Drumbeats trilogy (which begins and ends in Ghana). Apart from insatiable reading, she loves travelling the world, singing in choirs, swimming, yoga and walking in the countryside in England and Madeira where she and her husband divide their time.

Thank you for spending a little time with us here on the blog today, Julia!

Thank you for having me here today! It’s lovely to be with you.

Where are you from?

Originally south of Birmingham in the UK, but I was at school in York and at university at Keele, Staffordshire, lived and worked in Ghana, West Africa, and have lived around the midlands most of my life.

Married with children, pets, or annoying roommates?

I’m married to a husband who is devoted to, not to say obsessed with, golf (maybe that’s an annoying roommate!) Seriously he’s very kind and does the cooking when I’m engrossed in my manuscript and forget the time. I have two beautiful and talented daughters and two lovely grandchildren as well as two stepchildren and two step grandchildren.

Are you self-published, traditional, or hybrid?

I started off self-published but was lucky enough to be offered a deal with a trad publisher after only 3 months on the wonderful RNA new writers’ scheme.

How long have you been a writer?

I’ve always been a writer (I wrote my first novel at age 10 but never submitted to a publisher) and my dream from an early age was to be an author. However, life intruded and I didn’t have much encouragement from family, so I became a school teacher then a university academic, throwing myself into my work which was very demanding, and found myself unexpectedly as a single mum for 10 years. When I married again, I wrote many academic papers and texts which were published but my real love was creative and imaginative writing. I was persuaded by friends to write a book about our old rectory in the heart of the English countryside which I renovated with my second husband. I was captivated by the idea of the previous occupants who would have cooked in my kitchen over the years, and I researched the history of food throughout the life of our house. I do think that history and the lives of people are embedded in the fabric of houses. That first published book was the cozy read, The Old Rectory: escape to a country kitchen, and it is a combination of a feel-good memoir, research on the history of the house, and the history of cooking, along with recipes to feed the soul. The joy of that book was that I realized I could write and get published, and that there were actually people who wanted to buy and read my books! My dream had come true: I was a real author at last!

Have you ever taken the NaNoWriMo Challenge?

I have, for a couple of years, and I found it really helpful as a means of focusing and challenging myself every day over the month. It was hard work but worth it as I created the first draft of two of my books over those two NaNoWriMos. It’s good to know that people are supporting your writing process and it keeps you on your toes as you feel you’re accountable to keep up those word counts each day. I do recommend it especially for writers starting out: it’s excellently motivational!

What’s your favorite genre to write or do you only write in one genre?

I have written in several genres, mainly because I couldn’t decide which was MY genre – I loved different genres. Also, I’m an avid reader of historical romances/ mysteries, contemporary psychological thrillers and crime, especially police procedurals, although I couldn’t write those last two. But I have published different genres and I chose my publisher because they publish across genres; they’re not genre-centred like some. I have a memoir/recipe book (The Old Rectory: escape to a country kitchen), a children’s fantasy medieval adventure for 9-14 year olds (S.C.A.R.S), a gritty but ultimately feel-good romance (the Drumbeats Trilogy), a historical medieval/dark ages time-slip romance (A Shape on the Air) and my WIP follows the latter. I especially loved writing the latter two because my specialist field is medieval history, language and literature. I still do a lot of research in it and love the medieval world, and also am fascinated by concepts of time. So, I think I’ve found my favourite genre at last!

What are you reading now?

Right now, I’m reading Kate Morton’s The House at Riverton. I like books that deal with past and present, and how the present is affected by the past. In this case it’s an old lady’s contemporary memories of being in service to a family with big secrets after the first world war, and how she gradually unravels and reveals them. I love time slip especially, though, like those of Pamela Hartshorne and Barbara Erskine. My last, A Shape on the Air, is a time slip from the present day to the dark ages, and my WIP is a time connection between present and 14th and 16th centuries in Madeira.

Favorite beverage to read with?

Fresh ground coffee (love the smell!) or chamomile and honey tea. Sometimes green tea with jasmine. I’m giving up gin & tonic and wine, at least at the moment, in a bit of a health campaign!

What’s the inspiration behind your latest release? Who’s your favorite character?

My latest release was the last of the Drumbeats Trilogy, Finding Jess, which was published August 2018, and subsequently the Omnibus edition of all three novels together (Drumbeats, Walking in the Rain, and Finding Jess) which my publisher, Endeavour Media brought out in kindle version just before Christmas. The omnibus edition is available at http://mybook.to/DrumbeatsOmnibus

Each of the novels is also available separately on Amazon, both in ebook and paperback. My first inspiration behind the series was the fascinating country of Ghana, West Africa, where I worked years ago. I had always wanted to write a book set there – and finally I did! My other, and equally important, was the strength and spirit of a woman rising above adversity. So, essentially, it’s a feel-good work. Although parts of the trilogy are gritty and deal with hard issues like divorce and mental health, the trilogy as a whole read is definitely up-lit. I guess my favourite character has to be the protagonist, Jess, who is feisty and independent, despite all that life throws at her. I also have to say I adore Jim, the love interest, because he’s gorgeous: strong and principled but also caring, loyal and fun.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

My advice is always to persevere and to never give up. If you believe in yourself and your work, you will get there in the end.

Thank you!

Thank you for the lovely chat!

Tuesday Talk with… author Holly Kerr

Tuesday Talk w/H. Kerr

Holly KerrThank you for spending a little time with us here on the blog today, Holly!

Thanks for having me Felicia!

You’re one of our northern neighbors. Where in Canada do you live?

I grew up in Southern Ontario farm country but now I call Toronto home.

Married with children, pets, or annoying roommates?

Married with children. I have 3 kids (17, 15, & 12) and they’re only annoying when they interrupt my writing!

Are you self-published, traditional, or hybrid?

I’ve been published by a small press, but now I’m a self-published, independent author, working with my own imprint, Three Birds Press.

Are you a full-time writer or do you also work outside the home?

I started out as a stay-at-home-mom/author, but since my kids are older, I’ve dropped the stay-at-home-mom bit and kept the author.

How long have you been a writer?

Forever. Doesn’t everyone say that?! But I’ve been published since 2013.

How long did it take you to write your first book?

Not that long, surprisingly, since I wrote it back in 2002 when my daughter was a baby. I would write during her naps, and I’m very grateful that she was a good sleeper! It just took a while for it to see the light of day.

Pantser or Plotter?

Maybe a bit of both? I usually have an idea where the book is going, and how’s it going to end. But there’s been lots of times that I’ve been writing and then all of a sudden realize we’re getting close to the end.

What’s your greatest strength as a writer?

I think I’m good at dialogue. And I know I can write a good action scene.

Do you have a writing pet peeve?

That’s a good question. I don’t think there’s anything. I’m pretty laid back. I might have to come back to that one.

Do you believe writers should write every day?

I know I need to write every day. I get twitchy if I don’t. But no, I don’t think you have to write every day, although I do think you need to do something with words, whether it be writing or reading. It goes without saying that writers need to read a lot.

What’s the longest you’ve sat at your desk getting words onto paper?

I’ve had a 14 hour day before. There were little breaks for food, but that was the longest. My usual is about 6-8 hours, but that might involve the business of writing as well as getting words onto paper.

Would you rather edit your WIP… or join the military?

Ha!  You know, my favourite part of the process is the revision part, and editing is kind of part of that, so I don’t really mind it. My main hatred is The Blurb!

Ugh, The Blurb! I’ve yet to meet an author who enjoys writing them.

What’s your favorite genre to write or do you only write in one genre?

I write in a variety of genres, and I’m not sure I can pick a favourite. It depends on my mood!  I write women’s fiction/chick lit/rom-com, which all goes together. But I’ve also tried my hand at kid lit. I also write erotic romance under a pen name. Because I just finished Hanging On, which is women’s fiction, I’m going to have to say it’s my favourite today!

Favorite book or character from your published work?

I can’t pick a favourite book, that’s like picking a favourite child!  But a few favourite characters are Pippa McGovern, from my Charlotte Dodd action chick lit series, Cat Skatt, from Coming Home and Hanging On, and Brit, who is the best frenemy you’ll ever want! She’s from Unexpecting and Unexpectingly Happily Ever After.

Do you ever have those days when you’ve had it and walk away from your work to clear your head?

Um…today? I don’t know if I should admit this, but I’d just finished my book – literally typed in THE END – and I was hit with the worst case of self-doubt I’ve ever felt. I had to leave the house, not just my work! I’ve had other moments where I need to step away and come back with a fresh view, but today was the worst.

Finish the sentence, “If I didn’t write, I’d ___________.

 Work in a bookstore. I actually did have a job in a bookstore, but gave it up when the writing took off. I loved it

Where do you get the most writing done?

Here is my little ‘office’. I need tape on the floor to show my walls, ala Les Nessman. (Am I dating myself?!)

OMG! Les Nessman! The Thanksgiving episode with the turkey drop is iconic! 😀

Holly's office

Do you have pets who “help” or inspire you?

I lost my cat Sebastian a few years ago and I still miss him. He used to sit by my chair in a block of sunlight. We have Nikki visiting for a few weeks, so let’s get her in this, along with Spyro, my son’s dragon. He’s really cool.

Holly's pets

What’s your favorite genre to read? Favorite author?

I read a little bit of everything; historical fiction, YA, romance. I’ll read anything by Sarah J Maas, Christina Lauren, Emma Chase, to name a few.

What are you reading now?

The Gown, by Jennifer Robson. She’s a fellow Canadian!

Netflix, yes or no? Favorite show?

Netflix, yes!  I just finished watching The Scandal and looking for something new to distract me.

Totally addicted to social media or could you live without it?

I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I love it that I stay connected with my family and friends but I hate how I get sucked in. And all the ads! Ugh!

What’s the inspiration behind your latest release? Who’s your favorite character?

Hanging On is a sequel to Coming Home, about a family of five sisters living in small town Ontario. Coming Home was inspired from my relationship with my sister. With Hanging On, I looked to the relationships between my aunts. When I told my aunts that I was writing a sequel to Coming Home, they wanted to make sure no one thought they were the characters in the book! They ARE NOT the characters in the book, okay, Aunt Joan!?

What’s your next project or release?

I’m excited about this one. I’ve joined together with other chick lit writers to write a series. The first book, which will be mine, is coming out in May! It’s about love on a cruise ship.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Ask for help when you need it. Never think you should publish without someone you trust looking over your work. That means critique partners, beta readers, editors. Be as professional as you can. And find a support group. This is a solo gig and it’ll drive you crazy if you don’t have backup once in a while. And always, remember you’re doing it because you love it!

Thank you, Holly! Continued success to you!

Thanks Felicia!

Honging On cover

It’s been eight months since Maggie’s husband died and she’s doing fine–if you don’t count the urge to jump over the grave at the funeral, the weekly chats with Mike’s ghost, and the possible assault charge from the woman she punched in FoodMart.
Her sisters are there to help, but as the oldest, Maggie is used to being the one they lean on, not the other way around.
And then comes the week that changes everything. Grown daughters with babies and boyfriends. Wayward sister Dory is home, looking to make trouble. There’s even a new man in town who thinks Maggie’s ready to move on. And why now does Maggie decide it’s time to find her real mother?
What does it take for Maggie to realize that she’s not fine–she’s barely hanging on?
But she has her sisters to help out–if they don’t make things worse.

Coming Home cover

Things to remember when coming home:
-DON’T make your favourite sister so angry that she kicks you out, especially when the only other place Brenna has to go
is the family home, where youngest sister Cat lives with their mother’s ghost
-DON’T kiss your ex-boyfriend, who is now in love with Cat
-DON’T have a knock-out, drag down fight with Cat
-DON’T meet sexy men in a bar – well, one of them was a good thing
-DON’T believe your father isn’t the hero you always thought he was, unless you have no choice

After her perfect life explodes, Brenna comes back home and isn’t ready to to deal with any of it – the sisters who have become like strangers, the well-being townsfolk who love to nose in her business, and the family quirks that drove her away in the first place.

Is coming home the best thing for Brenna? And can sisters become friends?

Sherrie LoweAuthor Bio I am a divorced mum of two adult sons and nana to three grandchildren, soon to be four. I’ve always had a notion to write but didn’t get round to it seriously until I became ill with M.E in 1995 when I was 40 and was too ill to continue my job as a learning support assistant in a mainstream high school. I was devastated to have to resign from my job, but writing saved my sanity. My first attempt was a memoir, Shadow Across the Sun which covered the loss of my mum to breast cancer two days before my 13th birthday. When the rejections began to flow in from traditional publishers and agencies, I joined a creative writing class and learned to write fiction. Whisper to Me is my 10th novel. I have a strong belief in the afterlife due to events following my mum’s death so most of my stories have some form of supernatural aspect to them.

cover

In the seventeenth-century, an all-powerful witch called Rionach the Dark ruled the Celtic nations with an army of enslaved werewolves. In order to restore balance between Light and Dark, the Trinity of Light was summoned to vanquish the Dark Witch and end the Battle of the Dark Ages.

Seventeen-year-old Quinn Callaghan lives in the small, rustic town of Silver Mountain. Its location may be rural, but it is home to an ancient pine forest that surrounds a supernatural hotspot–a nexus of raw and powerful energy.

When a charismatic witch from Ireland, and a mysterious guy with a secret of his own are drawn to the area, Quinn finds out that she inherited her rare abilities from a revered ancestor. Could it be that she shares a bloodline with the Original Trinity? Nearly 300 years later, the Darkness is returning to Silver Mountain, and the Trinity must stop it.

Meet Brittany Elise

Brittany EliseWhere are you from? I’m from a small town outside of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Married with children, pets, or annoying roommates? I am married, but the only children I have right now are of the fur-variety. I have two German shepherds, two cats, and a rabbit.

Are you self-published, traditional, or hybrid? I’m traditionally published with Black Rose Writing, out of Texas.

How long have you been a writer? Gosh, that’s almost hard to say, specifically. I’ve been writing since I was a little girl, so I’m tempted to say my whole life. Haha.

My love for writing began at a very young age–way before I could even type on a keyboard. I was always writing short stories and poems with a fan club of one (my mom.) I never stopped writing, but I don’t think I believed in myself enough to actually pursue it as a career. When I enrolled in college, I took as many creative writing classes as they offered and ended up graduating with a degree in photography and minoring in English. I enjoy art in all its forms, but writing has always been my first love. Even when I was pursuing other careers, writing was always my go-to comfort. I later became an animal obedience instructor and met a children’s author through my dog training. She helped me get my foot through the door, so to speak, and I haven’t turned back since. During the day, I manage an FBO at my local hometown airport, and by night, I dive into my writing with my husband and my four-legged children by my side.

How long did it take you to write your first book? If you don’t count editing time, I can usually knock out a novel (raw, rough draft) in about four-five months. It depends on what I’m writing though. My first book took me several years to complete because I was never satisfied. Truthfully, there are still things I would change if given the chance to go back. I think it’s the curse of the artist.

What’s your favorite genre to write or do you only write in one genre? I love, love, love all things supernatural. I have the most fun writing  it. YA supernatural fiction is my favorite to write, but I dabble in all forms of fiction.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Supernatural/Romance

What are you reading now? Hailey Edwards wrote a series called The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy. I read the first four in a total of three days, and I’m anxiously awaiting the fifth. She’s phenomenal. Those stories are phenomenal.

Favorite beverage to read with? Tea and honey.

Where do you get the most writing done? Most of my writing gets done in the early morning. Especially on the weekends I don’t have to work. I’ll curl up with a blanket in the kitchen chair, and my cat, Boo, will sit on my lap while I write.

Totally addicted to social media or could you live without it? Honestly, I don’t “live” on social media, but I adore Instagram. Namely because of the photographs. That being said though, it would be impossible to do what I do without social media, so I’m immensely grateful for it.

What’s the inspiration behind your latest release? Who’s your favorite character? This is kind of strange to admit, but the inspiration actually came from a song by Aqualung called Strange and Beautiful. I probably live in my head more than I should, and I’m always inventing little scenarios or playing out scenes in my head. I listened to the lyrics and immediately developed this idea that started out as something small, and later became Awakening the Trinity. My favorite character in this book is Wren. He was so much fun to create, and I think he’ll speak to the heart of every high school girl who has had a crush on the “dangerous” boy.

What’s your next project or release? I’m actually working on the prequel to this novel, and also the sequel simultaneously, so I haven’t decided which will be released next, but I’m aiming for next fall. Maybe sooner depending on how editing goes!
