While not a happy story or easy read, Isolation Junction is a no-holds-barred look at one woman’s struggle to free herself (and her children) from an abusive relationship and reclaim her life.
Rose speaks well of Darren in the beginning but the relationship descends into a marriage of control and abuse.
It’s always easy to stand outside and judge, even in fiction, but I was gobsmacked when she married him and wondered how bad it would get.
Pretty bad.
Darren isolated Rose away from family and friends, harassed her to quit her job and played the victim, all while with an eerie and evil passive/aggressiveness that Rose fell for. Actually, that’s not true. While there were some frightening moments, Rose allowed and tolerated much of Darren’s abusive behavior, believing (wrongly) it was easier.
She thought if she gave him his way, he’d be happy with her; if she were better, he’d be better; if she erased herself and made him the focus, they would have a happy home.
But that’s not how it works. Abusers are only happy… when they’re abusing—mentally, emotionally or physically, and Rose found this out the hard way. The lengths Darren goes to control and humiliate Rose simply because he can are nauseating. Every time I turned a page, I was hoping she’d pick up a brick and clean his clock.
An intriguing read that will have you pulling at your hair in frustration, but Tim, his family, and Rose’s family are major bright spots in heartwarming scenes.
Darren and his family? I have no words. When they were at the house… Rose got in the car… Tim pulled away… and the brother… OMG! I wish Tim had been driving a tank. And those sisters? Disgusting!
Readers of literary fiction, psychological thrillers, and women’s fiction will dive right into Rose’s story… just keep an eye on your blood pressure!

Finding herself distraught, alone and helpless, Rose wonders how she’ll ever escape with her sanity and her children. With 100 reasons to leave and 1,000 reasons she can’t will she be able to do it? Will Tim help her? And will Rose find peace and the happiness she deserves? Can Rose break free from this spiraling life she so desperately wants to change?
