Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.
The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “hide/hiding/hidden.”
~~~~~~~~~~
A Song for You has been covered no less than seventeen times since it was written and released by Leon Russell for his first self-titled album in 1970.
Willie Nelson, Cher, Michael Bublé, Andy Williams, The Carpenters Donna Summer and Neil Diamond are just some of the artists who’ve added the song to album releases. Ray Charles won a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance of the song in 1994, and the version by Herbie Hancock with Christina Aguilera doing vocals was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 2006 Grammy Awards.
My favorite version is by jazz, blues, and soul singer Donny Hathaway, best known for his song, This Christmas, and for duets The Closer I Get To You and Where is the Love with Roberta Flack. Hathaway released A Song for You on his own self-titled second album in 1971.
At the height of his career, Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. On January 13, 1979, Hathaway’s body was found outside the luxury hotel Essex House in New York City; his death was ruled a suicide and such a heartbreaking loss for the music world.
Trivia:
- Donny Hathaway met Roberta Flack while a student at Howard University.
- Hathaway met his wife, Eulaulah, at Howard University and they married in 1967.
- They had two daughters, Eulaulah Donyll (Lalah) and Kenya.
- Lalah Hathaway has enjoyed a successful solo career.
- Kenya is a session singer and one of the three backing vocalists on the hit TV program American Idol.
A Song for You is a slow, pained plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover, and during the bridge he sings that while his lover held nothing back, he and his love were hiding.
Enjoy!
A Song for You
I’ve been so many places
In my life and time
I’ve sung a lot of songs
I’ve made some bad rhymes
I’ve acted out my life on stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we’re alone now
And I’m singing this song to you
I know your image of me
Is what I hoped to be
I treated you unkindly
But darling, can’t you see?
There’s no one more important to me
Baby, can’t you see through me?
Cause we’re alone now
And I’m singing this song to you
[Bridge]
You taught me precious secrets
Of a true love while holding nothing
You came out in front when I was hiding
But now I’m so much better
And if my words don’t come together
Listen to the melody
‘Cuz my love is in there hiding
[Verse 3]
I love you in a place
Where there’s no space or time
I love you for my life
‘Cuz you’ re a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
[Chorus]
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you
[Verse 4]
I love you in a place
Where there’s no space or time
I love you for my life
‘Cuz you’ re a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
[Chorus]
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you
We were alone
And I was singing this song
Singing this song to you
I know the Carpenters version but didn’t realize so many others had sung it too. I also didn’t know the story of Donny Hathaway. Thanks for so much info!
You had me at the piano intro lol, but then wow, just an amazing voice on top of it. This is all new to me, never heard the original either, but I like this one a lot. It’s gorgeous.
Thanks, AC! I just love his voice. He and Roberta Flack released an album when I was 12…that I still play…in CD form. Never gets old. 😊
