The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “search.”
~~~~~~~~~~
The end of a relationship can be devastating causing one or both parties to search for the reasons why they’re not together… or search for closure—and that’s what Adele does in Someone Like You when she tells her former lover (who’s moved on) “… Never mind, I’ll find someone like you.”
Someone Like You is the second single off of Adele’s sophomore album, 21. The track was inspired by the broken relationship that inspired most of 21. As the closing track of the album, lyrically, it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it. She wrote it with Dan Wilson.
The single is one of Adele’s most commercially successful singles. It became Adele’s first number-one single in the UK and second in the USA. As of 2015, it is the third most downloaded single of all-time in the UK and the fourth best-selling single of the 21st century.
Fun fact: This was the first pure-piano ballad to ever top the Billboard Hot 100. At the time of Someone Like You’s ascension, there were 1,008!
The song won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance, at the 54th Grammy Awards in 2012.
Someone Like You‘s music video was directed by Jake Nava and filmed in Paris, France. The video showed Adele walking alone through the streets with a sad look on her face. Critics praised the video for being simple and perfect for the sound of the song.
Enjoy!
Someone Like You
[Verse 1]
I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light
[Pre-Chorus]
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me it isn’t over
[Chorus]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
[Verse 2]
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
[Pre-Chorus]
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me it isn’t over
[Chorus]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
[Bridge]
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
[Breakdown]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
[Chorus]
Never mind, I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
“Don’t forget me,” I beg
“I’ll remember,” you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
One of my favourite Adele songs. Oddly it always makes me think of Alanis Morrissette’s You Oughta Know…or maybe not so odd (different energy but coming from a similar place).
Can listen to Adele sing all day. 🙂 And it’s funny but when Alanis first came out, her music annoyed me to no end. Two decades later and she’s on my playlist! LOL!
Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
lol I loved Jagged Little Pill from the jump…but didn’t really hop on the Adele train until 25 (I was more of Amy Winehouse fan during her Chasing Pavements phase)… whatever, I like them all…and music speaks to you when it speaks to you, right.
I always welcome opportunities to talk music.
Amy Winehouse–oh, um… that’s another artist I was late to the party on. My late mother-in-law was 86 at the time and a die-hard Tony Bennett fan. She was listening to his Duets CD and his duet with Amy was the first time I listened to Amy’s voice. I became a fan but she was already gone by then.
My second favorite song by Adele (my favorite being Rolling In The Deep). Reminds me I need to call someone today.
I always sense Adele’s pain in this song. I think you’re right in the end, she comes to terms with everything. Break ups are painful. I’m thankful to be in a very secure relationship with my DH for 39 years. I’d hate to be in the dating games. Have a songsational Sunday!
