The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “glass.”

~~~~~~~~~~
How’s this for following this week’s theme – a song by a group with glass in the name?
Looking Glass!
Their 1972 hit, Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl), was written and composed by band member Elliot Lurie and recorded for their debut album Looking Glass. The single reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100 charts, remaining in the top position for one week. It reached number two on the former chart for four weeks, stuck behind Gilbert O’ Sullivan’s Alone Again (Naturally), before reaching number one, only for “Brandy” to be dethroned by Alone Again (Naturally) the week after. Billboard ranked it as the 12th song of 1972. Horns and strings were arranged by Larry Fallon.
“Brandy” is found throughout popular culture, most notably in the films Lords of Dogtown and the 2000 version of Charlie’s Angels. It was featured prominently in the 2017 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where the song is featured as a focal point in the plot.
Interestingly, American birth registration data collected from the Social Security Administration illustrates a massive increase of American newborns named “Brandy” following the song’s 1972 release (from 353rd most popular in ‘71 to 82nd most popular in ’73).
FUN FACT: Barry Manilow’s Mandy was a hit by another group in England as Brandy, but when Clive Davis approached Manilow to do an American cover, Looking Glass’ Brandy was already a hit too so… Brandy from England became Mandy in America!
Enjoy!
Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)
There’s a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homesAnd there’s a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin’ whiskey down
They say “Brandy, fetch another round”
She serves them whiskey and wineThe sailors say, “Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea”Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the north of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of a man that Brandy loved
He came on a summer’s day
Bringing gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn’t stay
No harbor was his home
The sailor said, “Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea”
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor’s story
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
She saw its raging glory
But he had always told the truth
Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who’s not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say, “Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, yes, it is”
“Brandy, you’re a fine girl
(You’re a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
(Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, it is, yes, it is”
