The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “break.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, look! I’m back in the 70s again! 😀
The Stylistics were known for their smooth Philly sound and a string of hits which included Betcha By Golly, Wow, Stone in Love With You, and You Make Me Feel Brand New. But it’s their 1973 hit, Break Up to Make Up, I bring to this week’s challenge.
It was the seventh track from their 1972 album, Round 2 and was released as a single. Break Up to Make Up reached number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, number 5 on the Billboard R&B chart, and number 34 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1973. The Stylistics’ recording sold over one million copies in the US, earning the band a gold disc The award was presented by the RIAA on April 6, 1973. It was the band’s fourth gold disc.
If the song sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s been covered by artists from almost every music genre… a dozen times!
Break Up to Make Up is also sure to be found on most lists of great break-up songs.
Like Bobby Womack’s If You Think You’re Lonely Now, Break Up to Make Up is about ending the pointless cycle a couple has fallen into and breaking up for good. There wasn’t a performance video, but the song is more than enough!
Enjoy!
Break Up to Make Up
Tell me what’s wrong with you now , tell me why I
Never seem to make you happy though heaven knows I try
What does it take to please you? Tell me just how
I can satisfy you woman, you’re drivin’ me wild
Break up to make up, that’s all we do
First you love me then you hate me
That’s a game for fools
Break up to make up that’s all we do
First you love me then you hate me
That’s a game for fools
When I come home from workin’, you’re on the phone
Talkin’ about how bad I treat you, now tell me I’m wrong
You say it’s me who argues, I’ll say it’s you
We have got to get together or baby, we’re through
Break up to make up, that’s all we do
First you love me then you hate me
That’s a game for fools
Break up to make up, that’s all we do
Yeah, first you love me then you hate me
That’s a game for fools
Break up to make up, that’s all we do
Yeah, first you love me then you hate me
That’s a game for fools
Break up to make up, that’s all we do
First you love me then you hate me
That’s a game for fools
The game of love. It is truly a game for fools. I always disliked the game so I tried not to play games. It didn’t always work, but I’m happy now. Thanks for sharing!
I have always loved this one. Sad but beautiful.
You know it’s a good song when the sadness doesn’t overshadow the beauty. 😉
Very good choice! I love their vocals – one of the first (and best) “boy bands”. It also describes my first marriage… until I finally broke up for good! LOL
It’s funny. I don’t remember this song when I was growing up, but it was popular in the early 1970’s. Enjoy, and have a great day.
