The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “angel.”

I have always been a HUGE fan of Monica–she simply has a voice like no other. Some know her for For You I Will, the 1997 top ten hit from the Space Jam soundtrack.
But she rose to prominence after releasing her debut studio album, Miss Thang, in 1995. It went multi-platinum, while its first two singles, Don’t Take It Personal and Before You Walk Out of My Life, made her the youngest recording act to ever have two consecutive chart-topping hits on the Billboard Top R&B Singles chart.
In 1998, Monica’s second album, The Boy Is Mine, earned her major international chart success. Pushed by its Grammy Award-winning number-one hit title track, a duet with singer Brandy, it spawned two further Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, The First Night and Angel of Mine, and established her position as one of the most successful urban R&B female vocalists to emerge in the mid to late-1990s.
Surprisingly, Monica’s Angel of Mine was a cover! *Gasps*
It was first recorded and performed by British R&B girl group Eternal from their Greatest Hits album (1997). Monica’s version released in 1998 and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and peaked at number two on the US Billboard R&B chart.
I can’t believe it’s twenty years old, but it is considered a classic and still receives regular airplay on all the online streaming services.
The video is on point, and yes, that is actor/recording artist, Tyrese, playing the love interest!
Enjoy!

Angel of Mine
by Monica
Songwriters: Rhett Lawrence / Travon M. Potts
There was something inside of you
Something I thought that I would never find
Angel of mine
Now I know why they say the best things are free
Gonna love you boy you are so fine
Angel of mine
I’m different now, you helped me grow
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I’m checkin’ for you
Boy you’re right on time
Angel of mine
No one in this whole world can ever compare
Last night the way you moved is still on my mind
Angel of mine
Deep inside I need to show
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I’m checkin’ for you
Boy you’re right on time
Angel of mine
As if they were new
Every breath that I take
The love that we make
I only share it with you
You, you, you, you
There was something inside of you
Something I thought that I would never find
Angel of mine
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I’m checkin’ for you
Boy you’re right on time
Angel of mine
I’m different you helped me grow
I look at you looking at me
Now I know why they say the best things are free
Checkin’ for you boy your right on time
Angel of mine
She really does have a beautiful voice. This song was so overplayed when it first came out, but I can sure appreciate why! 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing.

Definitely a classic! 😀 ❤ Monica and Brandy were amazing together, a real powerhouse of female vocalists. And remember when Brandy was "Moesha" ? LOL Wow, flashbacks…

You know I love my power voices and Monica has been on the short list since she was a kid. 😜😜 Her cover of ‘Right Here Waiting for You’ is on my all-time favorites list!
And I lost count of how many episodes of ‘Moesha’ (and ‘Even Stevens’) my daughter made me watch! 😂
