Excerpt

The Red Blouse

The red sweater is something important to Amalia, but she loses it when her mother takes another swing to knock down her daughter. This shows how awful Janet can truly be. Red becomes a theme in the book and aligns with the color of the cabin on the cover – James J. Cudney

Amalia grabbed her bag and keys shuffling everything together to leave with her mother. In her rush, she dropped the bag to the floor. The red blouse spilled from its only protection unaware of the trouble its presence would generate. It was the only article of clothing Amalia owned that made her feel special, nor did it try to hide her body from the rest of the world.

“What is that doing here? I told you to get rid of it yesterday morning.” The room grew a few degrees cooler as Janet’s icy expression penetrated the surface of Amalia’s waning facade.

“I… I just… forgot it was… in my bag when I brought it here today,” stammered Amalia.

“Give it here.”

“No, Momma. I’m bringing it home.”

“Someday, you’ll understand, girl.” Janet refocused her triumphant gaze from Amalia to her husband. “Have you got a pair of scissors in this store, Peter?”

Amalia closed her eyes and pictured what could have been if she’d met Bryan at the lake. She chastised herself for foolishly letting down her guard imagining the possibility of something positive happening in Brant. It was merely another one of her nightmares masquerading as a silly little girl’s daydream. Fighting back was a lost cause, and so was her blouse. Amalia grabbed the scissors from the rusty mason jar and walked with unparalleled defeat toward her mother.

“Stay right there, child. I’m not gonna be the one to destroy it. Give those scissors to your father.”

Peter’s deep-set eyes grew wide with disbelief despite remaining glued to a pile of dirt in the corner. “Janet, let her keep the shirt, please. She’s not going to wear it anywhere.”

“Cut it up now, Peter. The girl needs to learn another lesson. Apparently, so do you.” Janet banged her fist against the nearest wall rattling the pipes. “Make it quick. Greg will be ready for dinner in three hours.”

As the harassment in Janet’s voice punched holes in his body, Peter’s courage went limp with burden. His shaky fingers, normally quite firm and adept from building his model trains and boats, slid into the scissors. Amalia turned away at the nagging graze of one blade against the other, grateful when the fabric muffled the awful scrape of her last hopes being dashed away for the summer. “I love you, Daddy,” she mouthed to his despondent eyes and walked behind her mother to the car praying for silence on the ride home.

About the Author

Jay.jpg

James is my given name; most call me Jay. I grew up on Long Island and currently live in New York City, but I’ve traveled all across the US (and various parts of the world). After college, I spent 15 years working in technology and business operations in the sports, entertainment and media industries. Although I enjoyed my job, I left in 2016 to focus on my passion: telling stories and connecting people through words. My debut novel is ‘Watching Glass Shatter,’ a contemporary fiction family drama with elements of mystery, suspense, humor and romance. To see samples or receive news from my current and upcoming books, please subscribe with your email address at my website: https://jamesjcudney.com

What do I do outside of writing: I’m an avid genealogist (discovered 2K family members going back about 250 years) and cook (I find it so hard to follow a recipe). I love to read; between Goodreads and my blog at https://thisismytruthnow.com, I have over 500 book reviews which will give you a full flavor for my voice and style. On my blog, I started the 365 Daily Challenge, where I post a word each day that has some meaning to me, then converse with everyone about life. There is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dog has a weekly segment called “Ryder’s Rants” where he complains about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real and show how I live every day.

A bit of humor: Everything doubles as something else when you live in NYC. For me, it’s the dining room, my favorite space in the apartment, where more than just my cooking is on display! As I look out the windows onto a 12th floor terrace, various parts of nature (trees, bushes, flowers, bugs & animals) inspire me to write. Ryder, my 10-year old shiba inu, usually lays on my feet, growling when I shift positions too many times or when I forget to share my food! Although he’s only 20 pounds, he’s quite strong and pushy. But how else can you pen the best story possible without these things by your side?

4/5 Stars!

What’s worse than witnessing a child abduction?

Being an adult who survived being kidnapped as a child… and knowing firsthand the psychological and emotional anguish the child will go through.

So sets the stage for If I Want You, with one compelling twist—journalist Tori Peterson is convinced the abduction of Abby Brady from Barlington Primary is related to her own abduction sixteen years earlier.

The journey to bring Abby home is tumultuous filled shady characters, deception and betrayal. Romance is added to the mix when a spark between closed-off Tori and widowed, single-dad Mark Bolton roars to life.

Well-written and nicely paced, If I Want You is an enjoyable, thought-provoking read.

With that being said, my issues lie with the protagonist… Tori Peterson.

I felt sympathy for her.

To find out after-the-fact she wasn’t a chance abduction but targeted and stalked before she was taken makes the blood run cold. Add to that her time with kidnapper Brian Appleton and what she went through and it’s more than a little unsettling.

I empathized with her.

From the moment Abby is taken, Tori is propelled back into her own kidnapping and she’s determined to save Abby from the same fate. She feels her own traumatic experience gives her insight law enforcement overlooks and doesn’t consider. And I happen to agree with her.

I just didn’t care for her over-the-top I-don’t-need-anyone attitude.

Even in fiction, I won’t pretend to understand a character’s motivations… and Tori’s were all over the place.

She feels unworthy, damaged beyond repair and isolated.

I get that.

But it does not give her license to be rude, offensive, condescending, and insulting.

At first, I thought these were defense mechanisms. But when Mark calls Tori’s sister, Melissa, she co-signs the bad behavior, telling him, “Tori’s not the type of woman you want to hassle” and “You’ll come off a darn sight worse than she will if you annoy her enough, believe me.”

What? Yeah, I was ready for a Kindle-flinging moment.

However, I shouldn’t have been surprised. Both her parents felt guilt over her abduction and her sister felt like a failed protector.

When Tori was returned home, her family moved, and once she hit adulthood, she moved out on her own. No doubt to escape the guilty looks and overprotective lifestyle.

There is no mention of Tori receiving counseling or joining a support group. So she’s had sixteen years to internalize her trauma, and it’s not a good look.

However, if you’ve read any of my past reviews, you know not liking the star of the show has never stopped me from loving the story.

Although I figured out early who was at the center of the madness, the story played out nicely. And little Olivia Bolton? What a kid! Children can sometimes come off as precocious and obnoxious, but Olivia is smart and wise beyond her years. Even in her misstep, she digs deep and finds the answers no one else can. Kudos to Mark for being a dad who listens.

Readers who fancy mystery, romantic suspense, and psychological thrillers will revel in If I Want You.

Enjoy!

Song Lyric Sunday was created by Helen Vahdati from This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. For complete rules or to join in the fun, click here.

The theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is “angel.”

~~~~~~~~~~
I have always been a HUGE fan of Monica–she simply has a voice like no other. Some know her for For You I Will, the 1997 top ten hit from the Space Jam soundtrack.
But she rose to prominence after releasing her debut studio album, Miss Thang, in 1995. It went multi-platinum, while its first two singles, Don’t Take It Personal and Before You Walk Out of My Life, made her the youngest recording act to ever have two consecutive chart-topping hits on the Billboard Top R&B Singles chart.
In 1998, Monica’s second album, The Boy Is Mine, earned her major international chart success. Pushed by its Grammy Award-winning number-one hit title track, a duet with singer Brandy, it spawned two further Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, The First Night and Angel of Mine, and established her position as one of the most successful urban R&B female vocalists to emerge in the mid to late-1990s.
Surprisingly, Monica’s Angel of Mine was a cover! *Gasps*
It was first recorded and performed by British R&B girl group Eternal from their Greatest Hits album (1997). Monica’s version released in 1998 and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and peaked at number two on the US Billboard R&B chart.
I can’t believe it’s twenty years old, but it is considered a classic and still receives regular airplay on all the online streaming services.
The video is on point, and yes, that is actor/recording artist, Tyrese, playing the love interest!
Enjoy!
Angel of Mine
by Monica
Songwriters: Rhett Lawrence / Travon M. Potts
When I first saw you I already knew
There was something inside of you
Something I thought that I would never find
Angel of mine
I look at you looking at me
Now I know why they say the best things are free
Gonna love you boy you are so fine
Angel of mine
How you changed my world you’ll never know
I’m different now, you helped me grow
You came into my life
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I’m checkin’ for you
Boy you’re right on time
Angel of mine
Nothing means more to me then what we share
No one in this whole world can ever compare
Last night the way you moved is still on my mind
Angel of mine
What you mean to me you’ll never know
Deep inside I need to show
You came into my life
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I’m checkin’ for you
Boy you’re right on time
Angel of mine
I never knew I could feel each moment
As if they were new
Every breath that I take
The love that we make
I only share it with you
You, you, you, you
When I first saw you I already knew
There was something inside of you
Something I thought that I would never find
Angel of mine
You came into my life
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I’m checkin’ for you
Boy you’re right on time
Angel of mine
How you changed my world you’ll never know
I’m different you helped me grow
I look at you looking at me
Now I know why they say the best things are free
Checkin’ for you boy your right on time
